Did you know this? I did not know this. Apparently James Bond himself was a bodybuilder before he was an actor. I really didn’t think it got any more confusing than his accent in Highlander. And yet, here we are. Look on his glistening biceps and despair.

The guy on the right looks like Ted Bundy. I think. Some serial killer. Looks just like him. Had no idea that Connery was ever a body builder, much less at that level.

    Hot piece of Scottish ass!

And how, pray tell, did Joanna Robinson not know of this?

  • DeaconG

I really need to start pushing my workouts more...

  • Liz

You forgot the best photo all of all. I sent this to a male friend and he responded with, "THANKS A LOT, IT TURNS OUT I'M GAY. GONNA GO FIND SOME COCK TO SUCK."

  • Sara_Tonin00

The first time I tried to click on this post it was so sexy it broke my Safari.

Those are some nice pix. Confusing to see Connery sans body hair - though still rocking the eyebrows, thankfully.

One of his first professional gigs was in the chorus of either the musical Dames at Sea or South Pacific - I can't remember which. That also creates confusing visuals.

  • JJ

Yes, that was the issue with him being cast as the first James Bond because Connery was seen as too athletic and unrefined to play the role.

  • MrMinion

It's actually mentioned briefly in Mike Myers' tribute to Sean Connery at the AFI Life Achievement Awards with more photos: Enjoy. ;-)

  • BWeaves

I remember hearing or reading an interview with Sean Connery where he talked about this. He said that body builders in his day actually did things like swimming and playing football to get their physique, instead of lifting weights. That's why they look nice and normal and not all roidy.

He got his first acting part in the chorus of South Pacific as one of the sailors, and they stuck him up front. It's not that he was a great song and dance man, but that the chorus consisted mostly of a bunch of gay guys dancing around in sailor outfits singing, "There is nothing like a dame."

  • Sara_Tonin00

Ah, there we go. Thank you. (should've scrolled down)

  • Captain_Tuttle

So my question is: was there a whole lotta deforestation going on, or did the massive crop of body hair come in later? And how long would it take to shave all of that?

  • lowercase_ryan

Why don't more people cosplay Zardoz?

    nvm, I'm on it.

  • Maguita NYC

I would need my visual aids please:)

  • lowercase_ryan

I'll wear it on the flight when I come to meet you.

  • Maguita NYC

Let's hope TSA has a sense of humor... :D

Also. You are SO doing it!

  • BWeaves

    Send photos.

  • TherecanbeonlyoneAdmin

Plum smugglers. The lot of them!

  • BWeaves

Where are they smuggling plums? OH! I get it now.

I used to think that line in the English National Anthem was, "Send her Victorias (a type of plum)."

  • Are you sure it's the biceps you're taking in there in that last photo, Joanna? I'm just saying.

  • DeaconG

    Ah, yes...the Burt Ward Syndrome.

  • Mrs. Julien

    a. My stays are misbehaving.
    b. Isn't it fascinating the body building contestants in that era would not pass muster for playing a superhero in 2013?

  • Bert_McGurt

I saw someone on another site the other day complaining about how Daniel Craig's Bond looked "too much like a bodybuilder", and that they needed to go back to someone normal-looking, like Connery.

  • DeltaJuliet

Nothing needs to change about my Mr. Craig, thankyouverymuch!

  • Bert_McGurt

Oh, please understand that I didn't AGREE with him. I think Craig is fantastic. I would (or will, hopefully?) be quite pleased to look like that in 15 years. Or now, even.

  • DeltaJuliet

Well, if THAT happens, let me know :)

  • ZbornakSyndrome

My first thought was "wow, we've gone from that to The Rock". It's amazing how the standards have changed.
