Why Is Everyone At The Emmys Wearing Green Ribbons?

Every year, there seems to be some cause that inspires celebrities to wear ribbons of support. Last year, tons of Emmys attendees wore green ribbons as part of the Green Ribbon Campaign, an attempt to bring awareness to mental illness. The awards ceremony was barely a month after the Robin Williams’ death, and this was an issue on a lot of people’s minds.

This year, however, a lot of celebrities decided to make things as confusing as possible by wearing green ribbons again, this time for a different cause. The ribbons this year are in support of climate change awareness and action. According to the NDRC (National Development and Reform Commission),

Climate change is the most critical humanitarian crisis of our time. In December, hundreds of world leaders will gather in Paris with an urgent mission: working together to finalize a new global agreement for combating climate change.
Now, with the heat in Los Angeles having reached near-lava levels today, this choice seems appropriate. But the internet actually seems to be pretty divided on these ribbons, with a lot of people still believing they are in support of mental health awareness, especially with World Suicide Prevention Day having just passed about a week ago. And a LOT of celebrities are wearing green ribbons that we can’t get close-ups on. (They seem to all have words on them). Just a few who have been seen wearing them: Jeffrey Tambor, Don Cheadle, Mandy Patinkin, Brad Hall, Louis C.K., and Gaby Hoffman. Could they all be supporting different causes, unknowingly or not? Of course. And while it may be confusing to have two different topics with the same ribbon on consecutive years (or possibly even the same year), that’s not the worst thing that could happen. Ribbons often draw criticism for being seen as a small, ineffectual show of support without really contributing any effort. But at the very least, they start conversations and draw attention to a cause that needs it. And these ribbons have drawn attention to two causes tonight, totally by accident.
