What's Your Favorite ... ?

One of the things I love about this place is its fondness for surveys. I love surveys. One of the year’s most popular posts is always the demographic survey we do, and it was especially popular this year because it offered immediate results.

I thought we’d again offer immediate results, but rather than look at the site’s overall demographics, we’d survey you folks on movies and television to get a better idea of how your film and television interests break down. The ten questions below should take no more than 45 seconds to complete, and each of the questions is designed to make the choices somewhat difficult (which is why, in some cases, obviously more popular choices have been left off). That’s because I like to frustrate you.

The fun part is? I don’t think I could accurately predict a overall winner in any one category. I’m seriously curious to see how this turns out.

Wow. Apparently I don't watch stuff. I feel like a bad Pajiban. I was unable to vote for Premium Channel Comedy, Network Drama, Network Comedy or Best Picture Oscar Winners.

*shuffles off, head hanging in shame*

I'm so glad to see Waitress in the lead. It's one of those movies that I cannot get out of my head, even now 3 years later.

Baby don't you cry
Gonna make a pie
Gonna make a pie with a heart in the middle
Baby don’t be blue
Gonna make for you
Gonna make a pie with a heart in the middle

Posted by: Scully at November 29, 2010 2:56 PM

Also, is there any plan to do a "least favorite"? I enjoy those, especially on Pajiba.

Posted by: JGirl at November 29, 2010 2:57 PM

What JGirl said. Do us a Most-Loathed.

Posted by: Jerce at November 29, 2010 3:00 PM

For the Super Hero franchises, do you mean filmic adaptations, or source-material?
'Cuz that's different answers...

Posted by: Rykker at November 29, 2010 3:02 PM

Wow, I don't watch any of those Premium Channel comedies on a regular basis. Makes me miss Party Down even more. And Breaking Bad deserves more love.

Posted by: jM at November 29, 2010 3:04 PM

Ooh, I want a least favorite too! It's the Pajiba way.

Posted by: TWoP_Fan at November 29, 2010 3:04 PM

Where do I write in Louie? Not a premium channel comedy, not a network comedy, possibly the funniest show on television right now.

Posted by: Yossarian at November 29, 2010 3:06 PM

Serial Drama: Had to give it to Dexter over The Walking Dead, if for no other reason than longevity. Five great episodes simply won't rocket something to the top for me.

Premium Channel Comedy: Likewise, I'm just catching up on Californication, so the vote goes to Larry David. I think Californication is funnier, but...

Network Drama: To be fair, I don't watch any of those shows. But I saw House once and thought, "Wow. Dick. She's dying, how about a little bedside manner?"

Network Comedy: I'd like to do a write in for "The League." Unless you're not counting it because FX doesn't count as a network.

Superhero Franchise: Don't get me wrong. I love me some Superman. But one brilliant movie followed by four movies that are mediocre at best does not make for a brilliant franchise (that's right -- I said #2 was mediocre -- he throws a celophane S symbol at Non, for christ's sake -- you don't like it, you can suck a dick)

Director: Wanted to give it to Nolan. But c'mon. It's Tarantino. He's just more fun.

Posted by: superasente at November 29, 2010 3:07 PM

Sorry, I think I misspelled "definitely"

Posted by: Yossarian at November 29, 2010 3:08 PM

I don't watch any of the network dramas, but it was damned hard to pick a comedy. And everyone who doesn't watch Breaking Bad: GET ON THAT METH-ADDLED SHIT. It's awesome.

Posted by: Julie at November 29, 2010 3:10 PM

Fergusion? Seriously? Get my late-night boyfriend's name right.

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at November 29, 2010 3:11 PM

I also advocate for "most hated" survey.

I am sad that I watch none of those Premium Channel Comedies, so couldn't vote. And in other categories, I haven't seen all the choices, so it's a little unfair.

Which of these 5 Is Your Favorite Director?

Out of the lot I picked Nolan but Edgar Wright is my favorite director...

Posted by: reaperslogic at November 29, 2010 3:18 PM

I don't know why I take these things. They always just re-enforce my feelings of being terminally un-hip and out of touch. At least I had seen one show in each category.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at November 29, 2010 3:18 PM

Network TV? Why?

Posted by: admin at November 29, 2010 3:19 PM

re: favorite network drama. There isn't a "none of the above" choice...

Posted by: litmus0001 at November 29, 2010 3:19 PM

I just have one thing to say...

What do I know? I know that one of us has had their own personal stylist, and one of us shoplifts their shit from Fashion Bug. That's what I know.

Aah...favorite directors. Wait...wait...WAIT!

Posted by: shanmarie at November 29, 2010 3:23 PM

WHY!?!?! Why is The League not on the list for F/X shows??? You have failed me.

Posted by: Blank at November 29, 2010 3:28 PM

Wes Anderson, also. Wes Anderson.

Posted by: superasente at November 29, 2010 3:28 PM

And The Coen Brothers.

Posted by: jM at November 29, 2010 3:33 PM

Am I wrong to vote for Californication solely because it has the most nudity?

Posted by: sosumi at November 29, 2010 3:34 PM

Stephen Colbert needs more love around these parts.

Posted by: Aislinn at November 29, 2010 3:36 PM

Which of these 5 Is Your Favorite Director?

Count again.

That said, I am shocked at how little play Spielberg is getting. It is admittedly very tough to choose among the 6 listed but 5%? Are you guys all just too young?

Jaws
Close Encounters
ET
Schindlers List
Saving Private Ryan
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Minority Report
Catch Me If You Can
Munich
Jurassic Park

If the question is who is the director that you look forward to seeing new material from then maybe Spielberg deserves 5%. Otherwise, no way. And get off my lawn.

Posted by: ed newman at November 29, 2010 3:38 PM

So difficult. So so difficult.

Waitress vs. 500 Hundred Days of Summer? I know which one is a better movie, but GAH the other one tugs my heart strings. Now if Lars and the Real Girl had been listed, the choice would have been easy.

Waitress = heart strings for the moment when she realises that the men are bullshit and all she needs is her child

500 Days = for pure entertainment and really clever filmmaking "like a ninja"

I don't watch any dramas and as for premuium channel comedies, is there an option for jsut season one of Californication only? Referring to tennis shorts as "plum smugglers" needs to be rewarded in some way.

Most Loathed would be more in keeping with the tone of the site. We need a From Hell's Heart I Stab at Thee quiz. I keep changing my mind on the answers for this kind of quiz, but for the things I revile remain consistent.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at November 29, 2010 3:56 PM

This being Pajiba and all, when I saw that there are 6 choices for Favorite Director, but the category says "5," I figured it was rigged so that you couldn't vote for one of them - if you picked Cameron (for example), it wouldn't let you vote but a message would pop telling you your choice sucked.

I really really wanted to vote for X-Men, but that damned third movie just wouldn't let me.

We definitely need a Most Loathed poll.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at November 29, 2010 4:00 PM

Community really? Ok, maybe I'm missing something, maybe I just can't see past the guy on that shows dragqueen eyebrows. That's right, now you'll never be able to unsee it. You know who else has dragqueen eyebrows, Jeff Foster of the Indiana, wow there's a lot of white guys on that team, Pacers. Know who loves the Pacers? Leslie Knope, bitches.

Posted by: Piato at November 29, 2010 4:10 PM

That was NOT 45 secondes DR.

But then again I'm stoned.

The hardest on was the F/X question:
(It killed me and was easely 2 minutes on it own)

Justified
Terriers
Resque me

How can one choose?
I voted Terriers by the way.

If it would have been on sex appeal, nothing can beat Justified. Yeah, He can pull his gun on me.

Posted by: Magiel at November 29, 2010 4:20 PM

Oh and by the way, You all suck for the lack of love for David Fincher.

Posted by: Magiel at November 29, 2010 4:23 PM

The F/X question is bullshit and you should be ashamed at forcing that kind of Sophie's Choice on your readers.

Posted by: The Judge at November 29, 2010 4:28 PM

People who didn't vote for Louie must not be watching that show. It's the most brilliant comedy ever created. I have always had an altar to worship Louis CK, but after Louie, I'm building up to a full-blown religion.

Posted by: John G. at November 29, 2010 4:36 PM

That FX question was torture, because the first season of Louie was unbelievably great. But I own every season of It's Always Sunny on DVD, and have watched them a million times, and kinda want to watch them all again, in order, right now.

"WILDCARD, BITCHEEEEEES!!!"

P.S. Woot for the 10% Ferguson love!

Posted by: ChristianH at November 29, 2010 4:42 PM

Why is Jay Leno not a choice for talk show host? I need to see that 0%.

Posted by: Zeff at November 29, 2010 4:47 PM

That had some tough ones. The director one especially because I like all SIX of them. Couldn't throw in a Ratner or Uwe Boll to even it out? Damn.
At least someone besides me still loves WEEDS around here. But 4% for PARKS & REC? Come on people. You know in your heart that COMMUNITY ain't all that. It's good, but it's no PARKS & REC.

Posted by: TylerDFC at November 29, 2010 5:07 PM

The FX question (which was either not there when I first took this quiz or I'm just going crazy) was definitely the hardest. A couple years ago it would have been Rescue Me without a second thought. Now I'm just waiting for Leary and Tolan to write it out without completely destroying my faith in them.

Everything else in that category was a fight to choose. While Louie is most certainly one of the funniest comedies around, Justified is plain kick ass and I'm going to weep often when Terriers is off the air - I had to go with Sons because I have faith in Sutter's brilliant writing. Also I named my dog Samcro. So that show HAS to stay good or else.

Posted by: Paultera at November 29, 2010 5:27 PM

Dexter is a drama?! Boy have I been looking at that show the wrong way. That show is funny as hell.

He, Ed, of all the Speilberg movies you mentioned, how many are from the last ten years? Yeah, exactly. If this were 1983 then I got your back. But it's not. His last outing was what, Indy 4? Or am I missing some other bowl of tepid pudding that he's concocted recently?

And I second the "Where's Danny Boyle?" sentiment for director list. Especially in the light of 127 hours, which was pretty amazing directing.

Speaking of everything else, how narrowly focused could you get, Rowles? Did you just compile a list of your favorite mainstream things from pop culture and let us chose from that? I mean, Napoleon Dynamite? seriously?! You actually thought to mention that movie?

I couldn't reasonably vote for much of anything.

Posted by: Some Guy at November 29, 2010 5:30 PM

Louie, Louie, Louie, Louieeeeeee
Louie, Louie, Louie, Lou-I-I
Louie, Louie, Louie, Louieeeeeee
Louie, Louie you're gonna cry-y

Seriously, folks. It's on Netflix instant, just watch it already.

Posted by: Yossarian at November 29, 2010 5:52 PM

Louie : Seinfeld :: The Wire : CSI

Posted by: Yossarian at November 29, 2010 5:53 PM

My big takeaway, though, is how hopelessly out of touch I am.

There's no shame in failing to watch 20 hours of television a week. Even with DVDs and DVRs, actively following more than a half dozen of those shows (and what, no favorite BBC?) is just crazy.

(but you should all be watching L-- ok, ok, I'll give it a rest for now.)

Posted by: Yossarian at November 29, 2010 6:30 PM

Yossarian,

You are my brother. Call me. Let's do lunch.

Posted by: John G. at November 29, 2010 6:50 PM

By "whimsiquirkilicious" you mean "mainstream indie", right?

Posted by: zomgmouse at November 29, 2010 7:15 PM

Community most definitely is all that and thank the good lord that people on here seem to agree. Breaking Bad is amazing too, people. I'm surprised it isn't more popular. I voted Always Sunny but judging from the comments I read on here I think I'd have picked Terriers were I not saving it to watch from beginning to end on my Christmas Break. These are fun. Listen to the crowd and do "Most Hated".

Posted by: becks at November 29, 2010 7:22 PM

Che and Some Guy

You guys think your Nolans and Finchers (and their movies) are going to age gracefully huh? Wait til they've been around a while. Wait till the next group of directors steal from them and improve on some of the things they do. The movies you think are so good will start to look pretty creaky. And they'll throw some real stinkers in before too long; it's just the law of averages. Fincher already has the Button movie to live down; Nolan has two great movies (TDK and Memento) and a few good ones*. Spielberg's best days may be behind him but when the history of movies is written Spielberg will be included in the inner circle of great Hollywood directors. As good as they've been out of the gate, your guys have a long way to go to even get a footnote.

*You prefer The Prestige and Insomnia over Raiders of the Lost Ark on rewatchability? Seriously?

Posted by: ed newman at November 29, 2010 8:24 PM

you bastards! you made me choose between 30 Rock, Community, and Raising Hope. This was like the Sophie's Choice of meaningless television polls.

Posted by: icycoldbitch at November 29, 2010 9:02 PM

Most Loathed
Weezer Album
CBS Comedy
Action Director
Washed Up Comedy Star from 2000-2001
Romantic Comedy
"Celebrity"

Posted by: Kokosokoloko at November 29, 2010 9:26 PM

It's hard for me to categorize Colbert & Stewart as "late night" when I watch them at 10am.

Posted by: krix at November 29, 2010 10:09 PM

I can't believe more people don't love Parks & Recreation. I think it's the funniest show on tv (well, the funniest show coming back to tv in a few months). Ron Swanson! April! Tom! Literally everyone on that show is hilarious! Also can't believe that so many people voted for Community, which is the only show on that list that I can't stand because it's so unfunny.

Posted by: abaybay at November 29, 2010 10:32 PM

I wish we could pick a second favorite for some of the categories. I absolutely love Parks & Rec, but I had to go with Community, and then I see that Parks & Rec only has 4% of the vote. It's a better show than 4%, y'all.

And I like Jimmy Kimmel. He's the everyman of late night comedy. 1%? Come on.

Posted by: Lucas at November 29, 2010 10:56 PM

Whilst I agree with you in principle, Mr. Grovera, you gotta answer the question, 'cause he's got you cold on watchability up there.

Different story had he chosen different Nolan-flicks, but no majority in hungover hell is choosing Prestige over Harrison punching out Nazis.

Just sayin'.

Posted by: Peter G at November 29, 2010 11:58 PM

I've just got to add my love for all things "Sons." If you're not watching it, you should be. It's the one show I NEVER miss. I want to be Gemma when I grow up!

Posted by: Pork Bowl at November 30, 2010 4:22 AM

I say we should rank them rather than choose one over the others. Although it lacks the benefit of instant results. Plus I don't have F/X.

Posted by: Uda at November 30, 2010 4:48 AM

I lurk. But this got my dander up.

@ed newman

Spielberg. Hands down. Then Tarrantino. Nolan. ???. Piss off.

Close Encounters was what? Tired on delivery? What does that mean... I basically created a genre in film - the horror blockbuster (nothing since Psycho had scared us so shitless)...
Then I did it again - created the Everyman Sci Fi blockbuster (arguably less of a film than the Sci Fi opera Star Wars). Then I created the action/adventure blockbuster (snakes, melting nazis, the sword/pistol scene, chopped by a propeller). Then I topped myself with an even better everyman Sci Fi blockbuster (ET)...Next, having proven myself beyond any possible need to prove myself again...I took massive risks with unpopular topics like....the holocaust, etc. And then I bridged generations with the HanksDamonator....

WTF you guys....The rest of the pussies on that list....besides Quentin...whateva.

Any of us who sat thru Speilberg's films in the theater on opening weekends..witnessed a revolution. Pure and simple. The only thing possibly close to Spielberg is Scorsese.

I had to look up Nolan on Wikipedia to see who he was. Dark Knight...are you kidding me. Garbage. Inception? please.

Yes Speilberg can be maudlin and a trifle smarmy. But he is epic.

Posted by: will at November 30, 2010 10:22 AM

One more vote for most loathed list. Make it happen DR.

Posted by: Vee at November 30, 2010 10:33 AM

You had to look Nolan up on Wikipedia? Are you 100?

Posted by: becks at November 30, 2010 11:48 AM

where the eff is The League?!

Posted by: k at November 30, 2010 6:12 PM

Thx Che. You are dead right. And anyway de gustibus non disputandum est. I just couldn't grok Spielberg at 6%. It was an affront. Becks...Im 40...but 13 of those have been out of the USA, including the last 10...so I think i miss/have no clue as to what the yunguns are into. I also had met with a wee dram last night ....not wasted but enuf to de-lurk so forgive any polemic fireworks.

I tend to have problems remembering Names...so Nolan meant nothing to me. A search led me to...Dark Knight...and reminded me of how I felt so underwhelmed ..and then even bewildered by the so called greatness of Heath Ledger....just....so what? Its freaking Batman version 17.5 and some tweaked out guy's interpretation of the Joker..is ....edgy?...because he over-the-topped Jack?....and this somehow speaks to the human soul? Bull. Shite.

And then Inception....just...balderdash. Smoke and mirrors. Complexity for the sake of complexity and...ok cool CGI but in the end...static. Plus stupid plot twists. Emptiness. Afterwards sadness that people actually got so into it...

I will be the first to say, good on Nolan for making movies, pursuing his passion, and having something to say. Who are we, lost in our little lives, to complain. But I almost want to argue that...Nolan is able to make his movies because Spielberg made great movies. Spielberg is Great. Nolan is...a good director. Go ahead. Like him.

Posted by: will at December 1, 2010 10:22 AM

Che- minor retraction - I don't think peak Speilberg can be criticized as being overly maudlin...just maudlin on occasion. Only Schindler's List and SPR go off scale. The family standing over the grave in SPR...the "why didn't I do more" in SL...ok ok. But in SL, after all the stunning greatness of that film...we must give him some benefit of the doubt. And SPR...with the awesome bullet in the brain realism of the Normandy scene...benefit of the doubt card again. Rest of peak Speilberg - Jaws thru ET. Some camp yes, maudlin no.
