Tremble Before Him, Purveyors of Above-Average Diner Food

Cake Boss on TLC at 9:00pm ET. Seventh season premiere. I’d like to believe that this is just a series with a terrible title and lurking underneath is a complex and nuanced look at struggling to maintain a family owned and operated bakery in New Jersey. But I’ve seen the commercials so I know that’s not the case.

Major Crimes on TNT at 9:00pm ET.

Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives on Food Network at 10:00pm ET. 18th season finale. Without fail, every time I’ve seen a place on this show that’s convenient to me (or somewhere I’ll be in the near future) and looks worth checking out, it’s closed. I think Guy Fieri is the kiss of death.

How to Survive a Plague on PBS at 10:00pm ET. This is a documentary about the early years of the AIDS epidemic in America, and mostly follows the group ACT UP in their mission to get the US government and medical establishment to begin developing medications to treat HIV and AIDS. It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at last years Academy Awards, in addition to many other notable accolades.

James May’s Man Lab on BBCA at 10:00pm ET. Third season finale.

Genevieve Burgess is taking tomorrow off because there won’t be anything worthwhile on TV besides countdowns. Happy New Year!

Is it just me, or is Independent Lens kicking the shit out of everything this year? After Jiro last week and that playwrights documentary the week before, PBS is kicking so much ass...

I've never seen "Cake Boss", but I always secretly hoped that it was a mob drama about pastry-obsessed crime families who commit drive-by frostings and leave gingerbread horses' heads in their enemies' beds.

  • You're not far off. It's actually closer to Jersey Shore: Bakery. Although they make some damned impressive cakes.

  • bastich

Show Tagline: "Cross the Cake Boss, and you'll sleep with the knishes."

  • e jerry powell

    Oh, now...

  • Al Borland's Beard

I don't think it's necessarily Guy's recommendation that's the kiss of death. The lingering smell of Axe body spray that permeates throughout each place probably costs a fortune to remove.

  • Jim

There's not enough bleach on the continent to clean that counter.

  • Al Borland's Beard

Well, almost all of it is in his hair.

  • BWeaves

    Well done!

Huh, Fieri featured Blimpy Burgers, a classic institution in Ann Arbor. It recently closed (the property was bought by the University of Michigan). So, yeah. You are right and now I can blame that asshole and not my employer.

  • Dave Dorris

So it's Guy's fault the owner of Blimpy saw a bunch of dollar signs and an opportunity to retire?
(By the way, I don't know that for a fact, but while we're speculating...)

  • ljridley

Well, yes. That is definitely what happened But I still blame Fieri. Because, because...uh...whatever. I never ate there anyway. Crabby employees and overpriced burgers isn't really my idea of a great lunch.
