Sad news today from the town of Twin Peaks. Catherine E. Coulson, who played the show’s mysterious Log Lady, passed away Monday morning at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer.

Coulson was born in Ashland, Oregon, where she later returned to work as a company member for 21 seasons at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. (Where I was lucky enough to see her in some incredible roles.) In addition to Twin Peaks and Fire Walk With Me, Coulson appeared in the second season of Portlandia, was the Assistant Director on Lynch’s Eraserhead, and spent a decade and a half working in Hollywood as a camera assistant. She was scheduled to appear in the new season of Twin Peaks on Showtime.

David Lynch released a touching statement on her passing.
