Rust Cohle’s Family Circus Exposes the Darkest Corners of Your Colored Penciled Soul

By Vivian Kane | Miscellaneous | April 15, 2014 | Comments ()

It’s been over a month since the finale of True Detective, and the tributes, parodies, and mash-ups keep rolling in. Why? Because it was a goddamn terrific show and we miss it every day. Now someone on Tumblr has found the perfect fit for that Rust Cohle hole in our hearts. What better match for Cohle’s bleak existential despair than that single panel of wholesome blandness, The Family Circus? Ugh, it’s so perfect makes my heart hurt.

Out of... what? 4 kids? One of them is bound to be a sociopath.

"People just think there are black hats and white hats, but there are black hats with white linings. There are white hats with black linings. There are striped hats."

  • Mrs. Julien

The sentiment in the one with Jeffy praying is a perfect description for a child that age.

Little Julien, age 8, has an existential crisis almost daily. Mostly, when we tell him he needs to get ready for bed: Some days it goes well, some days he flails against the injustices of his life, and some days everything is fine until he settles down to read and instead makes a catalogue of the ways in which we have failed him.

Also, that PJ is getting to be quite a handful.

One of the things I miss most about living with my niece and nephew is walking by their door after they've gone to bed and seeing my niece's open, resentful eyes, knowing she is cataloguing all of my sins.

Now they just need one of Billy's dotted-line neighbourhood adventures for the long-take scene with Rust and the bikers.

I haven't enjoyed Family Circus this much since the April 1st, decades ago, when all the cartoonists swapped cartoons, and Family Circus was drawn by Scott Adams, and Dilbert was drawn by Jeff Keane.

This makes me inordinately happy. Especially the grandma one. I love the fact that she's taking the quasi-nihilistic proclamations from her little ginger grandson right in her stride.
'Death created time to grow the things that it would kill.'
    'Yep, but first: Bingo'

I love this so much. There is no better match for Family Circus than the musings of Rusten Cohle.

Sooooo good. The grandma one is so perfect.

I haven't enjoyed Family Circus since 1982, but damn I enjoyed that.

    And the chaser:
