Rue McClanahan passed away this morning after suffering as stroke. She was 76.

Rue McClanahan is most popular for her portrayal of Blanche Devereaux in the long-running sitcom, “Golden Girls.” Betty White is the only surviving cast member of that show.

Before he success on “Golden Girls,” McClanahan also starred as Bea Arthur’s best friend in “Maude,” which ran from 1972 to 1978. She was nominated for four Emmy Awards, winning one in 1987.

Farewell, Ms. McClanahan. Here’s hoping the Miami of the afterlife treats you well.

Well, Betty got her wish.

I was going to go for a run today, but now it's pretty clear I should have a ton of sex and eat a whole cheesecake instead.

You know, for Blanche.

I agree vicky, for Blanche and all.

RIP Rue

Does this make three? Death always happens in ones, threes, and sevens. I think this makes three. Gary Coleman, Dennis Hopper, and Rue McClanahan. Have I forgotten anyone?

Morgan LaFai -

Art Linkletter and Dio have also died recently.

RIP Rue.

Sadness! I'm going for the cheesecake/sex salute as well.

Does Brittany Murphy's creepy husband count as death #4? In that case, we've got 3 more to go...

Posted by: Laura at June 3, 2010 12:40 PM

Geez. But...geeeez. I just don't know what to say.

Betty better have one hell of an alibi.

And now I feel like an asshat for posting the Thundercats news.

Posted by: Vermillion at June 3, 2010 12:42 PM

It's only gonna get worse as the Baby Boomers move inexorably toward the final reward. It's going to be a rough 10 years.
Wow. That'll harsh your buzz.
RIP Rue.

Posted by: Odnon. at June 3, 2010 12:43 PM

Sadness.

Rest In Peace, Rue.

I hope this isn't an omen for Betty.
Estelle passed in '08, Bea in '09, and now Rue in '10.

Posted by: Rykker at June 3, 2010 12:48 PM

She was great with Bea Arthur on Maude. She was even better as a Golden Girl. Thanks for the laughs, Rue.

Posted by: Jerce at June 3, 2010 12:48 PM

Good idea vikky.
Rest well Rue.

Posted by: FyreHaar at June 3, 2010 12:53 PM

Does Brittany Murphy's creepy husband count

Nope. He's only celebrity-adjacent.

Some years they don't just do threes... some years there's just tons of them. 1991 was a bad one if I recall correctly.

Looks like I'll be stopping for cheesecake on the way home as well. I wonder if they sell caftans around where I work anywhere? I haven't gone on my lunch break yet...

Thank YOU for being a friend.

Blanche was the epitome of Sassy. Thank you for being a friend.

Posted by: replica at June 3, 2010 1:03 PM

Sex and cheesecake for all.

Posted by: admin at June 3, 2010 1:04 PM

Rue McClanahan is dead. I mean, she's not as dead as Godzilla, but she's definately not coming back.

Posted by: superasente at June 3, 2010 1:04 PM

Waugh. The world is a little less awesome today.

Like I said, someone quick get over to Betty White's house and put her in a bubble of immortality.

Posted by: figgy aka Mrs Chanandler Bong at June 3, 2010 1:05 PM

This is so depressing. I don't think I should be alone tonight... ladies.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at June 3, 2010 1:22 PM

RIP Blanche, I'll miss your sass and your perky bosoms! I may have to make a cheesecake in your honor. Or at least think about it.

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at June 3, 2010 1:28 PM

You all have the cheesecake, I'll be on the couch finishing up the ice cream.

There better be cheesecake and ice cream in heaven. She could hang out with my gran. She always knew where to get the good stuff.

R.I.P Rue.

Dammit.

Rue was also terrific in the short lived series on Logo TV, called "Sordid Lives" She was the slightly ditzy mother of the institutionalized drag queen and had an affair with a much younger man. You could see flashes of Blanche in her character. RIP Rue.

someone quick get over to Betty White's house and put her in a bubble of immortality.

Make sure there's air in there!

Posted by: mswas at June 3, 2010 1:45 PM

RIP Rue!

Well, this makes 3 for me, as I don't know who the other people are, and I thought Art Linklater died 30 years ago.

Posted by: BWeaves at June 3, 2010 1:48 PM

Aw... Golden Girls is not actually my all-time favorite show or anything, but having seen it occasionally, thanks for the laughs, Rue.

And here's to Betty White's continued good health.

Posted by: Slash at June 3, 2010 2:02 PM

We are all destined to shake off these mortal coils and be with the gods. Rue’s death is a bit more personal to me, my time here on earth is soon to be over. When the people whom you have jacked off over when you were a kid start to die, time becomes a little more precious.

Every goodbye ain’t gone.

R.I.P Rue.

This makes me sad. I was too young to watch Golden Girls on its first go around. I have been catching it lately on WE TV. I have seen something like 4 episodes a day for the past 3 weeks. It's funny funny show. I love it.
I am sad today, and will also be getting into the sex and cheesecake for Blanche!
Also, I agree Betty White better have an airtight alibi.

Posted by: Nimue at June 3, 2010 2:21 PM

Oh Optimus, you rogue.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at June 3, 2010 2:53 PM

I don't think I should be alone tonight... ladies.

Well, HELL-O Optimus. *wink*

Posted by: Anna von Beaversmack at June 3, 2010 2:56 PM

True Story: When Rue had her first stroke Betty White sent her a huge bouquet of flowers with a card that read, "I hope you die, so that I can be the last Golden Girl." Apparently Rue laughed her ass off and thought it was hilarious.

Such wonderful ladies, RIP Golden Girl!

Posted by: Mebe at June 3, 2010 2:59 PM

What the FUCK is going on?!

Posted by: Nadine at June 3, 2010 3:10 PM

Dammit. The Golden Girls was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I'm not old enough to have seen all of it, but I remember the last couple seasons. And I've been catching the re-runs any time I can.

I might not get to the cheesecake tonight, but I will get into my husband's pants. Blanche would want me to. And, as soon as I get home, I'm changing into my pink hibiscus print muumuu that I inherited from my grandmother.

Rue McClanahan 1934 - 2010

She gave me a boner.

Sad. Also, Rue Mclanahan is a street in Paris where expat Irish retirees gather to drink and screw.

Posted by: laredo at June 3, 2010 4:24 PM

I just saw a Hot In Cleveland billboard yesterday and was thinking about Betty White's recent resurgence. Then I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool if Rue McClanahan had a renaissance as well?" Very sad.

Golden Girls was one of my favorites growing up. Damn funny. It was odd that such a show would be loyally watched by a boy of my age, as I couldn't have been much further from the target demographic, but so it was.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at June 3, 2010 4:42 PM

Blanche is my hero. She was one hot sexy horny ol' bitch, and I LOVE her for it.
I never heard anything about Rue McClanahan that disabused me of the notion that she was anything other than a great lady, and a greater Dame. She gave us all a lot of joy over the years, and I thank her for it. I will be looking into the prospect of some Cheesecake tonight. Because Rue would want me to.

And possibly a little action too, because Blanche would want me too.

{Hey Optimus!}

"Blanche, I have to say that when I first met you I thought you wore too much makeup and were kind of a slut."

"Well what do you think of me now Rose?"

(innocent look) "Oh you don't wear too much makeup!"

Love the fact that her character showed it was okay to eat and drink and have lots of sex even if you were older. Hopefully I will die a "Blanche" in a muumuu next to the pool watching the pool boy clean the filter :-)

Posted by: scorzi at June 3, 2010 7:48 PM

Am I the only one who remembers Ms. McLanahan's short stint on "Mama's Family"? Along with Betty White? No. Just me then.

What the hell was I doing watching that show?

Posted by: greer at June 3, 2010 8:03 PM

Y'all, my uncle just died Sunday. I CAN'T TAKE MORE HEARTACHE.

If we lose Betty in 2011, I will cut a bitch.
