RIP Natasha Richardson

1963 - 2009 / Dustin Rowles

Miscellaneous | March 18, 2009 | Comments (42)

Most of you have already been apprised of this, but Natasha Richardson passed away today, from complications arising from a skiing accident. Her husband, Liam Neeson — through a publicist — released this statement: “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

Richardson, who was only 45, was the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave. She found moderate success in Hollywood in films like The Parent Trap and The White Countess, but she was considered more of a stage actress. She also portrayed Patty Hearst in a biopic.

I have no idea what else to say, except that she was a classy lady with impeccable poise, and it’s a damn shame we lost her.

This is very sad news.

Best wishes to her family.

This is very sad, I wish her family peace of mind knowing that she is in a better place.

Posted by: Pookie at March 18, 2009 11:35 PM

This was just one of those things that I thought was going to get better, because the news reports were so inconsistent. When I heard, I just had to hug my kids awake and tell them I loved them and called the wife at work and did the same.

Godspeed to her family, husband, and kids

Posted by: richmac at March 18, 2009 11:45 PM

This is such a scary story because she was walking and talking after the fall, and now a day later she's dead. I can't even imagine how her family is going to process this whole situation. My thoughts are with them.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at March 18, 2009 11:48 PM

Yeah, this sucks. No point in really saying any more than that.

Posted by: Slash at March 19, 2009 12:07 AM

My heart goes out to her kids. I have no idea what it feels like to lose a mother, but it must be one of the worst pains in existence. Those poor kids.

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at March 19, 2009 12:09 AM

Tragic...she was exceptional as Patty Hearst and will be missed.

Posted by: Smokin at March 19, 2009 12:36 AM

Makes you take pause. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine went to sleep, and her heart just stopped. Like being kicked down a mineshaft. Just very sad stuff.

Posted by: Jo 'Mama' Besser at March 19, 2009 12:46 AM

This is so sad. Her and Liam Neeson just seemed like such a normal, wonderful couple, and to think of how he must feel just breaks my heart.

Very sad news.

Posted by: figgy at March 19, 2009 1:28 AM

unbelievably sad... don;t even want to know Liams pain

Posted by: Cole Hufstedler at March 19, 2009 1:50 AM

Very, very sad news. My heart breaks for the family and what they're dealing with. Unexpected death always tears at the core of a family and I don't wish it upon my worst enemies.

I gave my husband big ole' extra kisses and lovin' this morning. Because news like this makes one realize how precious life is and how goddamn temporary life can be. No other way around it sometimes. Just a big bowl of suck.

The best man at our wedding lost his mother last Friday and I have a wake to go to this Friday. We plan to drink hard and long for her, and for all of us. Together.

Fuck.

I kept hoping this would be one of those stories that the media was blowing out of proportion, but it's real. My thoughts are with her family.

Posted by: jM at March 19, 2009 2:37 AM

shit... i wont be able to watch nip/tuck, atonement or liam neeson in love actually anymore itll all seem like it plays in to her story

Posted by: jim at March 19, 2009 4:58 AM

I'm genuinely saddened by this, Richardson was a favourite of my sister and I and always seemed like a fun, bubbly woman, the kind of woman you could always depend on when you wanted a laugh.

I'd imagine her as the type of friend who's at your door with a bottle of wine, a tub of ice cream and not a single judgement with minutes of your distressed phone call, ready to offer a concilatory shoulder at any time, day or night.

My thoughts go out to Neeson, their sons, and their friends and family. This is a genuine loss to the acting world and she'll be missed

RIP
xx

R.I.P is all I can offer. A tragedy.

Posted by: Brook at March 19, 2009 5:16 AM

Like richmac and jM, I was holding out hope that once the media dust had settled, we'd hear that the severity of her condition had been grossly exaggerated. So sad that wasn't the case.

A classy lady, and part of what looked like a happy couple. Very tragic.

Jim, this morning, after processing this a bit, I began to think about Liam Neeson at the beginning of "Love, Actually".....processing his wife's death, leaving him with a young son, her funeral, etc. Now, it's real. How horrible for their family. How sudden and shocking that a woman, the same age as me, can simply fall one day, and pass away, leaving her family the next.

While "The Handmaid's Tale" is a very flawed film, she was luminous and brilliant in it. I am sure there were many, many more great roles ahead for her. My heart goes out to her family.

Everyone is saying this, but please, hug the people you love. Let them know you love them. Forgive the stupid, little, shitty things we do to each other every day. Enjoy what time you have. You never know if the simplest thing can come along and take it all away.

Posted by: dammitjanet at March 19, 2009 8:25 AM

Terribly sad.

Posted by: twig at March 19, 2009 8:46 AM

I had also hoped the media was moving too fast on this story (as they said she had died before she actually had) and am saddened for her family. Not only for her boys and her husband, but for her mother. I know how devastating is is to lose a parent, and at a very young age (we lost my dad when he was 50. I was 18, but my sibs were all younger), and I saw what my mom went through in losing her best friend and lover, but I cannot even begin to imagine how much it hurts to lose a child.

All I can do is send my condolences to the family, and love those close to me as hard as I can while we're all around.

Well put, dammitjanet, and RIP, Natasha. *raises glass*

Posted by: angelbabe at March 19, 2009 9:09 AM

She seemed like such a warm, vibrant woman and she and her husband obviously adored each other even after 15 years of marriage. Call me a sap, but I keep getting weepy everytime I see a photo of her. RIP Ms Richardson, you will be missed by many.

Posted by: snapnhiss at March 19, 2009 9:27 AM

You know it's so rare to find a high profile Hollywood couple who actually didn't marry for the publicity and lived a pretty normal life. I think that's why this sucks so much. I probably wouldn't care if it were one of the typical glitterati.

Posted by: PaddyDog at March 19, 2009 9:51 AM

Terribly sad.

Posted by: Cindy at March 19, 2009 9:52 AM

Sad, my condolences to Qui Gon and his family.

Very classy and pretty lady.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at March 19, 2009 9:54 AM

Oh no he didn't!

Poor Qui Gon/Oscar Schindler/Ras Al Ghul.

Posted by: George at March 19, 2009 10:25 AM

WEAR A HELMET. That is all.

Posted by: Ling at March 19, 2009 10:26 AM

This is why skiing is bad. If I have kids, there will be three rules that they must follow:

1. No football (including Rugby).
2. No skiing (including snowboarding).
3. No acting (one or two school plays is acceptable, but no more).

Posted by: Lucas at March 19, 2009 10:42 AM

Absolutely tragic. I feel so sad for her children and Neeson and the rest of her family today. My roommate were just rewatching the remake of The Parent Trap last week and couldn't stop gushing over how charming she was. Terrible news.

Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2009 11:45 AM

Incredibly sad news. Like most of you out there, I thought of Liam Neeson in Love, Actually as well. I don't think anyone will be able to listen to "Don't Worry Baby" the same way ever again. He and his wife looked perfect together, and it pains me to see someone so beautiful and so big of heart gone so quickly.

I hope the family recovers from this terrible tragedy, and sues the everloving shit out of the media, if only to make them realize how tastelessly they handled this situation. When the family didn't want to say anything, they just up and decided to declared her dead a half day before she actually died. Yeah, real classy you lot.

Posted by: Mike R. at March 19, 2009 12:11 PM

Gosh, this just broke my heart. What a terrible loss.

Posted by: The Pink Hulk at March 19, 2009 12:20 PM

Did it really break your heart Pink Hulk? Enough for you to stop wearing that obnoxious feather boa around your neck?

Posted by: Pookie at March 19, 2009 12:29 PM

This really does suck. I only remember seeing her in "The Handmaid's Tale", but whenever she made an appearance she exuded class.

Liam Neeson was in Toronto shooting a movie which is in post production where I work. Needless to say the mood has been pretty grim here today.

Posted by: Groundloop at March 19, 2009 12:41 PM

I have to echo the strange feeling of watching Liam in "Love Actually," because I just watched it again last night for the millionth time. My heart goes out to the family.

Posted by: Melissa at March 19, 2009 12:44 PM

"The Handmaid's Tale?" Was that a porn?

Ok, I have to speak up because this is just getting fucking STUPID.

SKIING IS NOT BAD. SKIING IS NOT DANGEROUS. I have been skiing for 16 years and have never once had a serious accident. Skiing BECOMES dangerous when people take FOOLISH risks and go beyond their limits as a skier. SOOO many times I have heard of beginner skiers going off into the glades and getting killed. Glades are only meant for intermediate to expert skiers not beginners but that is just another clear cut example of people thinking they can do more than they can.

For the record, she was skiing on a green circle called Nansen at Mont. Tremblant. I've skied it several times, it's one of the longest runs in Canada in fact. She fell at the bottom and it was a MINOR fall, she was barely injured. What may have happened in fact is that she had a brain aneurysm and that is was merely a coincidence that she fell at all that day.

I cannot emphasize this enough, if you are an inexperienced skier wear a fucking helmet. Like I said skiing only becomes dangerous and lives are only ever put in danger as a result of someone else's stupid actions. Know your limits.

Sorry, this just really has me fired up. You won't let your kids ski? Are you serious? More deaths are caused per year by snowmobiling than skiing...did you know that? Maybe let your kids ski but fucking teach them how to do it properly. Sorry again. I'm mad.

Also, my thoughts go out to Liam Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha's children.

Posted by: citizen_cris at March 19, 2009 1:52 PM

For the record, I'm not saying that Natasha Richardson took a stupid risk or put her life in danger. I'm just angry at people in general who have all of a sudden become anti-skiing and created a stigma around it as a result of this tragic incident. There is a level of danger in every sport.

Posted by: citizen_cris at March 19, 2009 1:55 PM

This is such heartbreaking news. I thought she was a great, understated actress who didn't get the credit she deserved; most of the vehicles she did in recent years were for other actresses (JLo, Lohan, etc) but I thought she was a lovely, charming presence in her films.

RIP, Natasha. My prayers are with your family.

Posted by: Brie at March 19, 2009 2:10 PM

Watching Love, Actually is gonna sting a bit from now on, I think.

So sad. I am doing research into brain injuries at the moment and hearing stories like this make me want things to work...so that people who suffer these injuries can survive.

Look after your brains, people!!

She was good in the Parent Trap and a few others... RIP Natasha
