News broke yesterday that shattered hearts as it echoed its way out across the land.

Yes, indeed: Microsoft Paint, we heard, was to be taken out behind the barn and ‘retired’.

Or, to be more specific, it was to be ‘deprecated’ in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, meaning that it would receive no more active development and might be removed altogether in a future update.

But then something amazing happened that puts the lie to my somewhat misleading headline. Microsoft collected all the tears shed, slopped them into an infernal machine of some sorts, and used the power of collective grief to revive the beloved program. Well, sort of.

Wrote Megan Saunders on a Microsoft Blog post:

Today, we’ve seen an incredible outpouring of support and nostalgia around MS Paint. If there’s anything we learned, it’s that after 32 years, MS Paint has a lot of fans. It’s been amazing to see so much love for our trusty old app. Amidst today’s commentary around MS Paint we wanted to take this opportunity to set the record straight, clear up some confusion and share some good news: MS Paint is here to stay, it will just have a new home soon, in the Windows Store where it will be available for free.

This means that while the program wont’ be packaged with future releases of Windows, users will still be able to download it at their leisure.

THIS SEEMS AN OPPORTUNE TIME TO MENTION SOMETHING I’VE SEEN ON REDDIT.

In a thread talking about an article about guy mastering MS Paint, Reddit user Langjahr piped up saying that they, too, enjoyed painting with MS Paint.

Langjahr, somewhat laconically, prefaced his portfolio with the words:

I started about 15 years ago with an interest in graffiti and found online groupboards. The only thing I learned is how to draw really well with a mouse.

Yes, you did, Langjahr. Yes you did:
