Yesterday, Pajiba lost a great commenter, and the world lost a great person. Jason Deas — who many of you know as Green Lantern in our comments section (and often Green Lantern’s various enemies once Jason got going on one of those amazing arguments with himself) passed away due to a terminal illness. Jason began here as a regular commenter a few year back but before long had become a very big part of the Pajiban Facebook community, as his Facebook wall today will attest.

I didn’t know until relatively recently that Jason was even ill, and it would’ve been hard to know based on comments here and on Facebook because the guy was so unbelievably upbeat. He was a huge comics nerd, always proud of his family members and one of the most supportive guys I’ve never met: Even as the guy was dying, he was a goddamn rock-star cheerleader for everyone around him. We haven’t seen the guy much in the last few months, as he’s been in and out of the hospital, but hell if he didn’t still chime in regularly to offer words of encouragement to others, including myself.

Jason Deas is one of the many reasons I love this community because, even when you’re scathing, bitchy, and full of rage and ranting against pop culture trivialities and grammatical errors, so many of you rally around each other, pull for one another, and cheer for each other personally when times are difficult. Jason Deas embodied that spirit better than anyone. He was more than a guy who pretended to be Green Lantern on a silly pop-culture website, he was a guy whose brightest light touched so many of us on our blackest nights.

RIP Jason Deas, and farewell to a friend.
