R.I.P. Jason Deas, Long-Time Pajiba Commenter and Facebook Friend to Many

Yesterday, Pajiba lost a great commenter, and the world lost a great person. Jason Deas — who many of you know as Green Lantern in our comments section (and often Green Lantern’s various enemies once Jason got going on one of those amazing arguments with himself) passed away due to a terminal illness. Jason began here as a regular commenter a few year back but before long had become a very big part of the Pajiban Facebook community, as his Facebook wall today will attest.

I didn’t know until relatively recently that Jason was even ill, and it would’ve been hard to know based on comments here and on Facebook because the guy was so unbelievably upbeat. He was a huge comics nerd, always proud of his family members and one of the most supportive guys I’ve never met: Even as the guy was dying, he was a goddamn rock-star cheerleader for everyone around him. We haven’t seen the guy much in the last few months, as he’s been in and out of the hospital, but hell if he didn’t still chime in regularly to offer words of encouragement to others, including myself.

Jason Deas is one of the many reasons I love this community because, even when you’re scathing, bitchy, and full of rage and ranting against pop culture trivialities and grammatical errors, so many of you rally around each other, pull for one another, and cheer for each other personally when times are difficult. Jason Deas embodied that spirit better than anyone. He was more than a guy who pretended to be Green Lantern on a silly pop-culture website, he was a guy whose brightest light touched so many of us on our blackest nights.

RIP Jason Deas, and farewell to a friend.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Maguita NYC

This really broke my heart. He befriended me on FB because I posted Superheroes in drag; Always made fun of my poor knowledge in superhero history, and as you said @pajiba, he was always there for others when they needed support or a good laugh.

He was a Superhero indeed. From the bottom of my heart, I'm going to miss this very kind and selfless man. My condolences to all his lovely family.

  • PerpetualIntern

So sad to hear. I remember his comments fondly. Rest in Peace, Green Lantern.

  • Rest in peace, Jason, Pajiba has lost a bright light today.

  • Jules

He used to join me on a tiny online radio show for an old mmorpg we played. I say joined, should say cohosted. The man was a force to be reckoned with behind a microphone! Could always make me laugh. I'm going to miss his frantic Green Lantern debates on the mic, just talking with him about anything, really. Miss ya, Jason.

  • Aaron Schulz

Beware my power, Green Lanterns light.

  • Replica

What a lovely man he was, praise and kudos for his family and friends all the way. I'm so damn sorry he had such a rough road. Even so, he'd apologize for it and thank his family for being there through all of it. I'm going to miss his evening 'sign off' on Facebook. It was like saying goodnight to your good guy neighbor.

  • Uriah_Creep

He did mention one time that he had to use an oxygen tank and had trouble getting around, but as Dustin said, he never complained about it and was a delight in the comments. RIP Jason Green Lantern Deas.

  • superasente

    Thanks for this, Dustin.

  • ScrimmySCrim

    This was lovely, Dustin.

  • emmelemm

Well this really sucks. I remember his Green Lantern presence well. Rest in peace, Jason.

  • Fabius_Maximus

    Well, damn! That's sad.

  • Ryan Ambrose

I'm very sorry to hear this, I never knew him but his light and wit will be missed.

The Green Corps lost a good one.

    Rest in peace, Jason.

  • Matt Brown

Not surprisingly, he's being mention on the City of Heroes Facebook group.

  • Batesian

Aw, man. I enjoyed his posts both as a comic nerd and fan of clever wit.

Blackest night indeed, now that he's gone.

  • Protoguy

I'm certain part of the reason he was so upbeat in here is because Pajibans rock, and Jason was a heavy metal God in that regard.

  • gdobbs

    Such a sad loss

  • NateMan

Very sorry to hear it. One hell of a funny and nice guy. RIP, man.

  • Jelinas

That Green Lantern light was unmistakeable in the comments, and we all loved him for it. Seeing how cheerful he was despite his illness always put a smile on my face. We love you, Jason. We miss you.

  • DarthCorleone

I didn't know him well, but I did always appreciate what he had to say. I went back to my Facebook IM history and reread a couple brief conversations we had a while back. I wish I had talked to him more.

  • I tend to whine and vent on FB more than anyone could stand to read, and yet Jason was always the first to offer a joke or word of comfort. I'll never forget that - even with all he went through, it was his nature to comfort others. RIP, my friend.

  • nosio

We weren't friends on Facebook, but I always enjoyed seeing him pop up on friends' posts, or here in the comment sections. His warmth and goodness was evident, even from afar.

The internet feels a little dimmer today.

  • LexieW

I haven't been a regular commentor, but I've been a reader for ten years. I remember his presence well - he was hilarious. My sincerest condolences to all who knew him, whatever the capacity.

  • Jimmy Wilson Jr.

An inspiration to me in my life. He will be so greatly missed by those he touched.

  • damnitjanet

2014 will be the year of the Lost Pajibans. Hug your loved ones tightly, appreciate the community/family that we have here, and never, EVER take anyone in your life for granted.

"What am I now? A green fire. A flash of light. A blast of force. What am I? The power. Am I afraid? Yes. But the fear doesn't matter now."

    -Hal Jordan, "Emerald Dawn"

    Rest in peace, Mr. Deas.

I'm so sorry to hear it. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

    RIP GL.

  • Terribly sad news. Jason was a lovely, lovely man.

  • Thank for you posting this, Dustin. This is affecting me much harder than I thought it might. We weren't extremely close, but you're right, he was always there for a positive outlook and for support. It was like he knew when somebody needed him and he was just there.

Cheers, GL. You were the best of us. RIP.

  • Mrs. Julien

#5 and very possibly the rejoinder, too.
