PajibaCon is Nigh

PajibaCon @ SXSW / Dustin Rowles

Miscellaneous | December 15, 2008 | Comments (112)

It’s been talked about for years, mostly in a hypothetical sense, by sexually frustrated Eloquents trying to end their dry streaks. Early next year, we’re finally going through with it, folks.

Announcing Pajiba-Con 2009.

We’re going to SXSW in mid-March. At least among the writers here, it’ll be the largest collection of us assembled in one place ever. The Boozehound, The TV Whore, Dan & Sarah Carlson, TK, Brian Prisco, LitelySalted and her boy-toy, ShepRitz, Phillip Stephens, and myself all expect to be there. There are already a couple of Eloquents who are also considering making the trip.

Trying to find a suitable location that would please all of our readers, unfortunately, would’ve been impossible. SXSW seemed like the ideal place: It’s got movie premieres, live music, a lot of places to stay, and Austin in mid-March will probably be in the mid-70s, a welcome respite for those of us in the Northeast, where the snow will still be black and piled up in parking lots and on the sides of the road. It’s also inexpensive, at least relative to Sundance, which is five times the cost, and takes place in Utah in early February. Week-long passes to the SXSW film festival are currently selling for $350. You can get more information about the festival, including lodging, at the SXSW website.

More importantly, there are plenty of bars. And as we all know, Austin bars have the best lavatories.

If you’re already going to SXSW, we’d love to hang out with as many of you as possible; we expect to set up a few Pajiba drinking outings. Likewise, if you’re just searching for a cool place to hang out on Spring Break, or if you just want an excuse to see a lot of films and/or hang out with the staff and, hopefully, a few of the Eloquents, we’d love to see y’all out there. If you have any questions or need any more details, please let me know. I can be reached at dustin at pajiba dot com.

I just squeed myself with joy.

Sigh. There's not a snowball's chance in hell I'll be able to swing this, but it is very exciting that there might be a larger Pajiban hang out/get together! And it's true, you definitely could not have found a location that wouldn't have set the 'Jibans aflame with indignation, etc.

Posted by: tamatha at December 15, 2008 4:12 PM

Alas Canada is shunned again. Ahh well, I suppose it's for the better. Canadians melt at temperatures over 40 in March.

Reason to win the lottery for reals this year nr. 736889...

Posted by: Pants at December 15, 2008 4:17 PM

Some of the best shows I've seen did not require SxSW passes... Earl Greyhound being one of them. Cuz there is no way on God's Green Earth I could afford $700 for passes for Mr Stella and I.

Posted by: Stella at December 15, 2008 4:18 PM

Awww man! I have always wanted to go to SXSW, but I still can't afford it and now PajibaCon is going to be there! This hurts...this hurts real bad.

Posted by: erin b at December 15, 2008 4:18 PM

radmobile. Need to plan. Need to plan plan plan. Need to prepare to drive. Need to get a hold of a car to make the trip that won't smell like 3-day old vinyl asshole by the time i arrive in Austin. Julie, boo, Nicole, and all Philly locals...I am for reals about this shit.

(yes boo..i know you're not a Philly local, but you're on the way so we can swing in and getchas.)

Posted by: PissBoy at December 15, 2008 4:20 PM

huh...

Are you gonna beat up Harry Rowles?

...that'd be pretty cool to see.

That is a spectacularly unfunny typo, Skitz. -- DR

Posted by: Skitz at December 15, 2008 4:25 PM

Wow, that's like just around the time I'm planning to be 100% broke from moving out of my parents house to (hopefully) Miami.

Y'all better hook up a live webcam so that those of us who are poor can watch on our laptops and sob quietly into our bottle(s) of wine.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at December 15, 2008 4:26 PM

PissBoy, come on an' get me!

Posted by: boo at December 15, 2008 4:28 PM

WHY AM I SO POOR???!!!

PissBoy, if I start saving my pennies now, and ask for some money as an early birthday present, AND start prostituting my ass on the streets of West Philly, then this could happen. I love road trips. And drinking. And movies. And I guess I love Pajibans. ...we'll see.

Posted by: Julie at December 15, 2008 4:28 PM

Heads up, people:

While most of what Dustin says is absolutely true, Austin during SXSW = can't find a hotel room to save your mama's life. Parking space and seats in restaurants, likewise. If you're even thinking about going, you might want to make your reservations very soon.

Alas, while I live about two hours away from the oasis that is Austin, in March I will be traveling east. I'll be with you in spirit. Don't forget to pack prophylactics.

Posted by: Jerce at December 15, 2008 4:33 PM

Pants - I had a very similar thought. Shockingly, I keep not winning. Go figure.

Posted by: tamatha at December 15, 2008 4:33 PM

This. Is awesome. And now I know what to do with my year-end bonus! Pajiba-con- here I come!

Posted by: HJ at December 15, 2008 4:37 PM

AWESOME. we look forward to your arrival!

Posted by: gross at December 15, 2008 4:37 PM

I love GaR's idea of webstreaming the event - no way can I swing attending it. Alas, the travails of being broke and so damn far away from all the cool people. If I could recommend some form of live-blogging for us money-impaired folks...

Just outta curiosity, if you hard-drinking Eloquents were to just go dry from now until SXSW, would you be able to afford it? Lord no, I'm not actually suggesting you go and do it, but Gools is already planning to pimp herself - how big a sacrifice would this be?

Posted by: lordhelmet at December 15, 2008 4:38 PM

Can there be official Pajibacon 2009 stickers and such? like real honest to goodness pub glasses?

If you need stickers, I might have a hook up...

Posted by: Stella at December 15, 2008 4:41 PM

Tamatha let's make a pact! If by some stroke of (long overdue) dumbass luck I do happen to win this year (I only play the new year's eve draw), I'll take you. If you promise to do the same we have now increased our chances to a whopping two shots in hell!

Posted by: Pants at December 15, 2008 4:41 PM

Pants - you have a deal!

Posted by: tamatha at December 15, 2008 4:46 PM

Hey, my money's going to Walt Disney World. Sorry, but that's how it's gotta be. Besides, if I tried to change my mind my father's ghost would kill me

Posted by: Jay at December 15, 2008 4:48 PM

I couldn't possibly go because I have ridiculous crushes on some Pajiba staff and some Eloquents and I know I couldn't control myself. I won't even look at you people on facebook because I'm in a committed relationship so I like to pretend you're all just figments of my imagination.

Posted by: becks at December 15, 2008 4:49 PM

I love you.

But i hate you all.
You have broken my heart.
For those who can attend i sincerely and honestly hope its as amazing a time as im sure it will be, and....think of me when you raise a drink of rum

Im going to go and cry some more. and....well you haven't quite pushed me to read or watch Twilight, it might be in the house but im not that sad but DAMN IT MAYBE NEXT TIME YOU'LL THINK!!!

How much blood does the human body hold?

What about semen?

What's the average cost per donation?

How about teeth?

Kidney's?

A lung?

Truck-stop sex?

A night with Wendel?

Posted by: Skitz at December 15, 2008 5:19 PM

This might be just up my alley seeing as I live in Austin.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 5:21 PM

Okay. I've had a few drinks of ...water, and come up with a plan;

Those of us who cant travel to the States, if we can go anywhere within our own country, say we organise our 'In Honour Of' PajibaCon?

Hold it on the same day/night and try and organise some kind of crazy connection to the american pajibacon? Carrier pigeons or faxophone machines or this new fangled interwebs?

Posted by: Nadine at December 15, 2008 5:21 PM

AAAAAAAAAH!

If Godtopus is good, I'll be in Texas by March!

AND OMG I WOULD SO GO. Even if the world would explode from so much awesomeness gathered in one place. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Posted by: figgy at December 15, 2008 5:23 PM

Pookie there is no way you live in Austin. How can I have missed you on 6th St? That level of snark cannot go undetected by fellow local Pajiba-philes.

Posted by: Stella at December 15, 2008 5:47 PM

Stella I assure you in live in Austin and I wouldn't get caught dead on 6th street, how's that for snark? I live 15 minutes outside of Austin in a small town called Manor. This is the first time in my life that I've been called out by a skirt.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 5:56 PM

May have to make an L.A. road trip....Prisco, fire up the Family Truckster!!!!

Posted by: Rubble44 at December 15, 2008 5:58 PM

Jesus Chirst! What's next Stella, are you going to accuse me of not wearing a cock ring?

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 5:59 PM

Dammit I was in Austin in May, so close but so far. Should definitely have a EuroCon in protest/tribute. Barcelona should be warm and have a similar vibe. And I've never been there.
Or the Berlinale is on from 5th to 15th Feb.

Posted by: ChrisD at December 15, 2008 6:00 PM

I'd expect that almost all the hotels in a 10-mile radius of downtown are already booked solid. You might want to look into accomodations in North Austin or even Round Rock.

Posted by: Dave in Austin at December 15, 2008 6:01 PM

I've never heard of SXSW, but it doesn't matter. The timing conflicts with my yearly weaving conference. Yes, there's a reason I'm bWEAVES. It's not my name.

Posted by: BWeaves at December 15, 2008 6:02 PM

Round Rock is a great location, you'll be far away from the riff raff, but not to far away from the action.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 6:03 PM

Guys, this sounds amazing, and it's the perfect venue. Although I doubt I'll be lucky enough to make it there, the ones who do make it are just going to have to have enough fun (*ahem* and hookups!) for all of us. Oh, and we expect tons of photos to be posted here and/or on the Facebook page.

Celery, you might have something there--if it looks like things are happening in TO, do keep me posted!

Posted by: meaux at December 15, 2008 6:04 PM

Weaves ewwwwwwwwwwww.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 6:05 PM

Pooks, I work in Round Rock so I know of what you speak...
Manor, huh? that 'splains a bit.

Posted by: Stella at December 15, 2008 6:06 PM

Round Rock is where I take in the occasional movie at tinsel town.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 6:10 PM

You haven't experienced a movie unless you're at the 'Mo. There's one near Lakeline Mall....

Posted by: Stella at December 15, 2008 6:17 PM

mieux do you live in cape breton? i'm in toronto now, but lived all over NS (including six months in cape breton) for the last five years.

Posted by: celery at December 15, 2008 6:21 PM

I just might do that.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 6:22 PM

oops, i meant .

Posted by: celery at December 15, 2008 6:22 PM

um... again, i meant meaux.
this thing hates me.

Posted by: celery at December 15, 2008 6:25 PM

Wow. I really wish I could go, my cousin lives in Austin so I have a free place to stay and drink for Mrs Chemical and I. However, working for an ag company means no vacation from Feb. to June. The scary thing is I was almost transferred to Texas a couple of years ago but was threatened with divorce if I accepted. Have fun ya'll.
Pookie: How is Manor as a town? I could have lived anywhere from Manor to Caldwell for my job judging by the map.

Posted by: ChemicalCurt at December 15, 2008 6:28 PM

It's been talked about for years, mostly in a hypothetical sense, by sexually frustrated Eloquents trying to end their dry streaks.

It's like you're speaking directly to me. And yet, I would like to keep my vacheter life and my Pajiba life separate.

That, and I don't have the money.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 15, 2008 6:29 PM

Hmm, I wonder if I should consider turning my home into a hostel for wayward Pajibans. I'd have to charge a pretty penny though...all that taco dip and bodily fluids can not be easy to get out of furniture.

Posted by: jenintx at December 15, 2008 6:32 PM

Well CC, I might not be the best person to answer that question. I moved here from Miami two years ago. Relative to Miami, Manor isn't exactly known for its cultural diversity, but its ok.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 6:37 PM

jenintx most bodily fluids are in fact easy to get out of furniture, even blood.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 6:43 PM

Really, Pookie? What part of Miami are you from?

Posted by: Sabrina at December 15, 2008 6:45 PM

A note for the cash-strapped - I've had several friends that used to volunteer at SXSW. In return for the services they provided, they were given a place to stay, hostel style. Not sure if that's how it runs anymore, but there used to be an application you could fill out with a variety of skills you had (i.e. electrical, stagehand, lighting, roadie, food services, etc.)

Posted by: Skitz at December 15, 2008 6:45 PM

Kendall

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 6:47 PM

Man, if people are road-tripping from LA, do you think you could swing by the OC and pick me up? although I imagine I'll be broke as hell since that's right after biophysical society.

Posted by: s. pisaster at December 15, 2008 6:54 PM

Ok, I need my band to really come together now. If we can sign a record deal by then, I'll have the cash to make it down. ((We actually had our first performance last week. I've been writing songs non-stop since vacation started but my other half is in Maine so we really can't do much in the way of practice. I handle vox and lyrics and he does the heavy lifting on the guitar and melodies. We currently bank on our charm and humor over any real talent. It does the job.))

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at December 15, 2008 7:01 PM

Gonna have to disagree with you there, Pookie...or perhaps it is a difference of volume.

Posted by: jenintx at December 15, 2008 7:04 PM

Mmhmm, mhhmmm, Kendall, very interesting. And another pin is placed on my giant map.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 15, 2008 7:08 PM

...and now I have grossed myself out, as well as provided the evidence to conclude I am a dirty, dirty bitch. Well done,me.

Posted by: jenintx at December 15, 2008 7:10 PM

Is this Austin/ As in in Texas?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 15, 2008 7:10 PM

I was lost on a bus in Kendall once, plus I got in trouble later for having been on said bus when I'd said we had a ride.

I hate buses! And I hate Florida! And I hate YOU!

Posted by: Jay at December 15, 2008 7:17 PM

jenintx, I've seen with my own eyes stains from blood and brain matter cleaned off of furniture completely. And that's all I'm going to say about that situation.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 7:17 PM

Also, I am not appreciating the slow pace of comments today. I've still got another hour and a half at work and you all are not helping keep me distracted.

Posted by: Jay at December 15, 2008 7:33 PM

I'm going to have to see how things work out as time gets closer since I'm getting married about a month from then, but I can almost certainly come hang with the peeps a bit one of the weekends even if I don't attend the festivities itself. Wedding plans aside it works out well; I only live a couple hours away and one of my best friends lives just outside town.

Austin is cool. It has its drawbacks (mostly traffic) but the bars are fairly cheap and there are some good restaurants too. For those going, I would think hard about staying too far outside of downtown just because of said traffic issues.

Posted by: Eep at December 15, 2008 7:36 PM

Wouldn't it be better if we got some package deal at some Inn or somethin?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 15, 2008 7:38 PM

Well Jay I would think all of that hot oil flying around all over the place from the french fry station would cause you to keep your mind on your work.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 7:44 PM

I appreciate your efforts.

Posted by: Jay at December 15, 2008 7:48 PM

My father would say the same thing after viewing my report card.

Posted by: Pookie at December 15, 2008 7:55 PM

Celery, why yes, I am in Cape Breton! Near Sydney, to be exact, though I hail from the west side of the island. What parts were you in?

And hey, you can call me "mieux"--I've certainly been called worse!

Posted by: meaux at December 15, 2008 8:07 PM

I wants!!!

Okay, so I must go to this. I haven't gone on vacation in a kerzillion years and methinks this will be the place to be.

I need some advice though. I can't drive. How's the public transport in Austin. Is it easy to get to the events if you are staying out of town?

Austin is lots of fun.

Posted by: Jackseppelin at December 15, 2008 8:47 PM

This is almost perfect, I live in New Mexico, and State is in Las Cruces, that shouldn't be too far away.

However, that's the George from 2011, the George in 2009, as in right know, is a high school student with no money, no car, a provisional license, and no job. So close, and yet so far.

Dustin, you have just created a weird emotion in me that makes me love you for having the con so close to my home, and on spring break, but hate you for doing it when I'm too young.

God damn you! And god bless you.

But I'm totally going their in two years! In the meantime, I'll go into crime to earn money for a car. The extra money will go to Skitz for having trouble with living with one kidney.

Step right up for the best heroin in New Mexico!

Posted by: George at December 15, 2008 9:42 PM

I'd like to be there, as I am in the business now, and Texas is my old stomping grounds and will always be my home.

I'd be too shy to talk to any of you, though.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at December 15, 2008 10:57 PM

m'kay. i was thinking about going to Texas around that time, which has to be a sign. i just have 2 questions.

1. are lurkers welcome? i'm not up on the PajibaCon thing because i assumed that it would take place in the NE, which probably wouldn't work for me.

2. Pookie are you really going to be there? cause if you are, wild horses couldn't keep me away--or some such. seriously.

Darth, we can hold up the walls together. once again, seriously.

As long as they're of hella-loose morals, yes. tb

Posted by: ted boynton at December 15, 2008 11:11 PM

Posted by: meaux at December 16, 2008 8:36 AM

meaux you are a ray of sunshine on a cold cloudy day. I would go to so many more movies if this were allowed in Saskatchewan.

Posted by: admin at December 16, 2008 8:42 AM

You can bring booze into any movie theatre. Its called a flask (and I'm called awesome, or an alcoholic, label is your choice)

Posted by: Park at December 16, 2008 9:08 AM

Hmm, I believe the article mentioned that drinking in theatres is already legal in Alberta...that's a little closer. Of course, you'd still have to drive a ways home after.

Yeesh, cold and cloudy day indeed. I'm sitting in my cube, listening to the wind howling outside my office window. It's an old building with crummy windows, so I don't exaggerate when I say the wind is howling! Gives me an excuse to put on my headphones and listen to my tunes, while playing deaf when my oh-so-chatty co-workers want to talk. (Yes, your kid did something cute. Good for you. Can I please get back to work now?)

Argh. Long morning. Bitchy little meaux-meaux needs a nice, quiet vacation...or an office with a door.

Posted by: meaux at December 16, 2008 9:09 AM

Park, I vote "awesome." See, that's why I come here. You're all my kind of people.

Posted by: meaux at December 16, 2008 9:11 AM

Yes meaux, but I always go to Alberta. Quit trying to find reasons to make me stay West! I'm not stalking, I'm looking out for your best interests!(through binoculars)

The beauty of this Park, is that you can bring your flask and keep re-filling without fear of repercussion. Two drink maximum? Pffffffft!

Posted by: admin at December 16, 2008 9:32 AM

Hee!! Huckleberry, I would be honored if you were my PajibaCon benefactor. I really REALLY don't want to whore myself, I'm not big on the herp.

Posted by: Jay at December 16, 2008 10:18 AM

meaux: i'm actually horrified by the idea of people drinking in movie theatres. it means MORE TALKING... which drives me fucking nuts.

are you acadian? the west coast of cape breton is lovely.
i spent six months on isle madam and then a completely blissful year on the south shore of nova scotia (la have). i also lived in halifax for a few years. i prefer the parts of nova scotia without many humans. isle madame resembled a stephen king/david lynchish trailer park on the ocean - there were times when i really feared for my safety, and my dog's safety. la have, on the other hand, was heaven on earth. my long-term plan is to spend half of every year in a less-populated part of ns/cape breton... or even better, newfoundland.

Posted by: celery at December 16, 2008 10:31 AM

Posted by: admin at December 16, 2008 10:52 AM

Posted by: phquaryn at December 16, 2008 11:14 AM

Well I'm certainly flattered, but again, I gotta get me and my common law wife back to Orlando. It's like a promise to return to Dagobah.

It's slightly depressing, though, that I don't think I'd enjoy the festival in itself. I just don't have the patience to hang out and wait to see if anything interests me while also not being able to go home at the end of the night. But then I'm annoyed if more than two bands play (which has always happened since at least the early 90s, but sometimes there's FOUR! My god, FOUR!).

Posted by: Jay at December 16, 2008 11:26 AM

I'm jealous that you're going to Disneyworld, Jay. I went there when I was 16 and have been dying to go back, there's something so appealing about Epcot Center.

:is a dork:

Phquaryn, I'll try my bestestest!

Posted by: Julie at December 16, 2008 11:44 AM

I think I should wait until I'm 21 in order to reap the full benefits of the con, unless someone wants to hook me up with a fake id.

Otherwise, this looks effin amazing.

Posted by: Jaci at December 16, 2008 11:56 AM

Ah, Isle Madame...yeah, not the best our fair island has to offer, celery. Nope, I'm not Acadian--I grew up in the 'burbs of Inverness (which itself is a village of about 2500), in the very Scottish part of Cape Breton. The town is rather run-down, but the surrounding area is quite lovely.

Newfoundland is beautiful. I went to school in St. John's, and recently vacationed in Gros Morne. Loved both coasts of the island.

Availability of funds: Plenty!

Loose morals: Check! (As long as there's no hanky panky on my part, I've got a Mr. and all)

Availability of time: Not so much

Ability to drink: Minuscule. Gone and got myself knocked up again.

*sigh* Maybe next year

Pajiba comin' to MY town! Finally! Yall should do some stuff at the Alamo Drafthouse, they have lots of panel discussions before and after movies and stuff. Plus, good beer and sangria.

Also, there are tons of people who ditch town during SXSW and rent out their places (much like ppl do for Mardi Gras). Check Craigslist, you'd be surprised.

As a local, I will be offering tour guiding for very reasonable rates.

Or...sass?

I'm pretty sure we both know that's not how that goes.

One day, you will have a PajibaCon in Los Angeles, and then...

There would be Pajiba plans for SXSW the spring following my move away from Austin. After living there for the better part of a decade, natch.

For all those worrying about affordability... stop it. There are tons of free shows, food, after parties, etc. I'm too lazy to find them and link them, but in years past there have been entire guides for how to do SXSW with no money. The Austin Chronicle, Austinist, etc. will have more info on that sort of thing closer to the actual date.

There is also always plenty of accommodation to be found on craigslist. I should know, since me and my roommates "rented" out couch/floor space in our house every year. Gotta love a landlord that lives in another state.

Dammit, I was already bitter about having to move back to Dallas. Now I hate it even more. *sigh*
