I have no idea what possessed me to try a video post to celebrate our 5th Anniversary, but the 29 seconds above is the best of about 78 attempts I made to make a video. Clearly, I’m incredibly uncomfortable; this is why we don’t feature video posts. It’s the thought, right?
Anyway, a longer version of the gist of what you get above is this (without the toddler sound effects): Thank you. It’s been a phenomenal five years. Personally, you’ve given me the opportunity to do my dream job over that period of time. I can’t thank the other writers of this site — past and present — enough. They’ve given countless hours to Pajiba for little or no pay, except for the opportunity to be raked over by our readers.
And it’s those readers — the commenters, the Eloquents, and the lurkers — who I want to thank the most. The community here is like nothing else in the internet. What other site has its own deity, its own murderin’ vehicle, and scrabble sex orgies with taco dip? This place is angry, mean-spirit, depraved, and sexually charged, but there’s a lot of fucking heart underneath all of it. It’s an amazing thing to be a part of, and I’m really goddamn appreciative of all the friends, both online and off, that the site has brought us.
We’re going to be doing some site retrospectives this week — looking back at some of our favorite reviews and updating some others, and showing some more appreciation to those of you who make this possible. But first, in the next hour, we’re going to kick off our 5th Anniversary week with the long awaited Pajiba Dictionary. Keep a look out. And thanks again.
So what's the five-year anniversary gift for blogs? Liquor, porn or illegal fireworks?
Posted by: twig at June 29, 2009 3:09 PM
5 years! fuckin A! I happened upon this site a little over three years ago and loved it immediately for the sole reason that it had movie reviews without stars. Been reading it ever since, and it's been awesome seeing it grow and branch out to other media. Thanks Rowles!
OH my gosh the mum in me went all broody over the toddler voice in the background.
CONGRATS!!! On five glorious years of love, hate, tears, laughter, discussions, arguments and ultimately a lot of fantastic people gathered together to be marvellous in one anothers company.
MWAH to all.
I apologise for the InterWebCold you all inevatibly will catch from me as I suffer through a doozy of a summer cold.
Also, I'm newly unemployed (literally thrown out of my office in the middle of the day) So you will become my refuge. Prepare for me to descend into bitter alcoholism. Or since I dont drink...bitter...meringue-ism

de-lurking to say thank you to pajiba and the countless hours of thoroughly enjoyable procrastination you have provided over the past 5 years (and if i never finish my dissertation ... i blame it on you ... ha!!) but, really, i love this site and its sense of community (even if i merely lurk on its periphery as a loyal and devoted reader)

Has it been that long?
Sweet baby Jesus, I need a life.
Posted by: Smokin at June 29, 2009 3:22 PM
That's how you pronounce Pajiba??
Posted by: mhz at June 29, 2009 3:22 PM
DR, you are just the cutest. Oh, and thank you... how else would we all have gotten through workdays for the last 5 years? (And thanks to l'il P. for sharing you with us for... 2,340 seconds of video-making.) Later i shall celebrate with a glass of wine! Or several! Which, let's be honest, I probably would have done anyway, but now I have a reason!
O Pajiba my Pajiba! our first 5 years are done,
The site has weathered every ill, from government to porn,
Good movies are few, the cries I hear, so many are revolting,
So many films and shows and music, Spambots comments are jolting;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck Joshua Jackson lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Pajiba my Pajiba! rise up and make your voice heard;
Rise up---for we will not stand for another turd,
For the MurderTank is ready, BabyWhiskeyNinjaStar awakens,
Godtopus shall show his wrath, Michael Bay shall be taken;
Here Pajiba! Dear Rowles!
Prisco, Skit, Bedhead and more!
It is some dream that someday,
We shall make movies a better way.
My Pajiba stands strong and proud;
We bitch and moan and bicker and spew aloud;
This site is our home, so many of us think;
We came together in love and sadness at the loss of Alabama Pink.
But arise, oh Pajibans!
Comment, Eloquents, speak,
Long live Pajiba. Oh, hark!
Do I hear 5 more years of snark?
I thank all of you for the lack of work I do everywhere I go (seriously, every job I've had the first thing I do when I get into the office is click onto this page). Sneaking this message as the boss is across the room!
Posted by: scorzi at June 29, 2009 3:24 PM
wait! can we do our favorite Pajiba moments?
I think mine were Rowles' child being born, the Sister Act 2 April Fools Day joke andddddd the creation of the MurderTank.
Big congrats on five years to my favorite site and biggest time sink!
Wow. Five years old. Soon you'll have to explain to us where babies come from, and finish potty training us before school starts. We're slow learners.
Posted by: branded at June 29, 2009 3:26 PM
I'll have to wait until I get to my mom's to watch the video. Damn it.
ANYWAYS. On the sappy side, both the content of this site and the people who live in the comments section (whether they be regulars or lurkers who pop out only in a blue octopus) have provided me with more laugh at loud moments over the past few years than I can count. Little did I think that a funny website I found via GFY would give me so many friends; tangible and internet-wise.
Thanks for making it possible, Dustin, Seth, and the writers, you all rock my socks and possibly my unmentionables off.
I think my favorite moment was the week I got to do EE. Or maybe when I got my new handle and had to pudding-wrestle the original Anastasia Beaverhausen. Or the time The Notorious P-K-E put me on his list of favorite non-Black Pajiba personalities. (Notice a trend? Yeah, I'm pretty much all about me.)
Oh yeah, I ALWAYS thought it was Pah Jee Bah...not Pah JY bah.
Wow.
Posted by: Nadine at June 29, 2009 3:29 PM
Sweet video with that little voice in the background.
Congratulations Pajiba, and thank you for a lovely place to read, laugh, share and make up pretend toiletry and sexual devices about which poor Billy Mays will never get to shout.
Posted by: Cindy at June 29, 2009 3:29 PM
Well, a traditional five years anniversary gift is wood, so . . . on this site, that shouldn't be too hard.
By that I mean there must be some talented person out there who knows how to carve an octopus out of a block of pine.
Congratulations, oh mighty Juice Lord. Keep that shit warm.
Posted by: Lauren at June 29, 2009 3:29 PM
I can't believe that it has been five years. I found the site only a few months after it was started and have been reading almost every day. I don't always put my 2 cents in but I love the hell out of this blog. Thanks everybody!!
Posted by: chidingo at June 29, 2009 3:31 PM
I haven't been around for all five years, but I love you freaks no less. Woo Pajiba Dictionary!
Aww, all growed up and ready for Pajibagarden. Congrats.
Posted by: slower lower at June 29, 2009 3:32 PM
Why the hell are you clothed in that video?
Congrats, man - you (and all of you who read, review & comment) have got a hell of a unique site here. I'm glad to have stumbled across it, breaking a nearly four-year addiction to hardcore interweb pornography... I mean, I still occasionally visit www.goldenshowerponyfurries.com, but I canceled my subscription a mere nineteen months after finding this place.
You all make me chuckle. Even you, Voldemort of Trolltown...
Happy 5th Birthday! Pajiba is my favorite movie site because it's so honest, and I can almost always tell whether I'll enjoy a movie or not from your reviews. Thanks for the last few years.
Like so many, tripped and fell (decided not to sue after I started reading) over this site this site a few years ago. It's always comforting in some sick sad way to be with a community of others who share this particular outlook on life. HAHA
Cheers!
Posted by: Aygerinos at June 29, 2009 3:49 PM
Congratulations! And thanks for all the hard work that goes into this site - it's quickly become my favorite, and the one I visit first thing every morning. (That video post was very cute, btw.)
Posted by: Thijs at June 29, 2009 3:50 PM
What a fantastic video! Dustin, you were wonderful, but your toddler made it spectacular.
I love this site and the people involved more than I can say. Many congratulations on 5 years of awesome.
And dammitjanet, I'm more than half-tempted to print out your poem and hang it on my wall.

Happy Fifth Birthday!! Bring on the cake, the dancing zombies, cold domestic beer and your finest bottle of chloroform!
Posted by: Mrcreosote at June 29, 2009 3:57 PM
Whoa, it's been five years already? I remember reading a baby Pajiba site and falling in love with the snarkiness and the fun that the site had. I've never been so attached to a site like I have been to this one. And the scene is only made more sentimental because I'm listening to Alexi Murdoch. Sad Alexi Murdoch. Wow, I'm moved.
I love you guys, every one of you sick people. I have so many Pajiba memories as the years have gone by, and of course the pinnacle being Pajibacon East. I'm glad to have met the people behind my greatest love on the computer, so thank you all, Dustin and the Crew for causing endless amusement and joy in this here kid's heart. May my age and wisdom never cease to amaze you!
Congratulations - I have never loved the internet more than the day I found this place. Also, I think it has contributed to my job security by doubling the time it takes to complete each project making me look much more important and overworked than I am.
Posted by: Jilly at June 29, 2009 4:03 PM
Oh MY GOD, all the goodwill, the merriment, the emotion, the inappropriately sexualized overtures.
Seriously, I fucking adore this place. I found it a year ago and I've been completely hooked since then. I can't believe the number of awesome people that visit this site--it's truly a Mecca for the Awesome. I love you guys.
And how weird is it to hear Dustin SPEAK. It's like...HE EXISTS. And we can hear Axl! that is so beyond awesome. You are adorable, Rowles. Ryry is lucky to have you.
I found my way here not very long ago, but it was love at first sight and I spend a great deal of my time here (my productivity has been adversely affected). As soon as I get home I will also be raising a glass.
Congrats! Hope to see the video soon, assuming it still isn't too damn hot to turn on the computer at home. Crazy Bay Area weather.
When the big hoodoo happened and blocked much of the internet from work, I decided right then that if this site was blocked, I was immediately looking for another job. Fortunately, I can still extend project deadlines by coming here.
Although, I still probably will look for another job soon. Too much mindless bureaucracy here.
Posted by: Drake at June 29, 2009 4:28 PM
Happy Birthday. I think you should have let Little Pajiba do the video. It would have turned us all to piles of mush.
I got here from "Query Letters I Love" (may Manager RIP) and I was always suspcious of the Pajiba ads that actually talked to me. It was creepy.
Posted by: BWeaves at June 29, 2009 4:30 PM
I have always said pah-jeeb-a. In fact, there's a very specific way that I say it out loud to myself, and it makes me happy.
I love this site.
Posted by: tf breakher at June 29, 2009 4:32 PM
I've been pronouncing it Pa-jee-ba all this time...
I suppose it does rhyme with vagina, after all. I thought you guys were just messing.
Posted by: Angus at June 29, 2009 4:33 PM
Happy fifth birthday, Pajiba! And it's cool to hear the voice of the man, but oddly, that's not what I thought he'd sound like. Anyway, thanks for keeping up the best site on the internet. Cheers!
I seriously fucking love this place and everyone here. I could not have lasted this long at this ridiculous job if I didn't have Pajiba to turn to daily.
Thank you Dustin and everyone here. I wish I could hug you all. Not even all at once - one at a time, slowly, with plenty of deep sighing and maybe a nibble on the ear.
Posted by: Kolby at June 29, 2009 4:44 PM
Wow, five years. It's hard to find a restaurant that sticks around that long, let alone a website. Congratulations to all who made this site happen, and kept it going with your hard work. I seriously credit you with helping me keep my sanity through three babies and maternity leaves.
Posted by: katy at June 29, 2009 4:44 PM
I work from home. I have my work computer on my right and my home computer with Pajiba on my left. YOU keep me sane, and it keeps my boss from knowing what I'm really doing. OK, truth be told, my work computer is slooooooooow, and I, um, like it that way.
Posted by: BWeaves at June 29, 2009 4:48 PM
Oddly enough, I don't picture your voice with a southern accent, even though you've referenced your heritage often. Happy fifth birthday, Godtopus.
That was a cute video, toddler sounds and all :) Yay for making me delurk a little bit more each day. Also, very pleased to see I wasn't the only one surprised by the pronunciation of Pajiba.
Posted by: Mona at June 29, 2009 4:55 PM
I was trying to explain to a friend of mine just today what this site was about, and why it is my favorite website. It's the people; the writers, the commenters, the trolls...we all come together to form something I've never been a part of.
And now figgy did the IRC chat thing this weekend, and that was awesome too.
Ah, Pajiba. Never leave me or I'll stalk you and sniff your hair while you sleep. Happy 5th Birthday.

Wow, happy birthday! I didn't realize it was the eve of such a momentous occasion when my husband and I embarked on the first ever Cross-Canada Mini-Bacon, meeting up with the incomparable lordhelmet and his lovely wife.
Thanks for these fabulously entertaining years, and thanks too for fostering such an incredible commenting playground where crazy kids like us can make new friends!
There's a horrifying secret connection between all the celebrity deaths of the last week and Pajiba's fifth anniversary, or my middle name isn't Hannibal.

I don't delurk often, the Eloquent's sometimes scare me, but I just wanted to say thanks for the hard work that goes into this site, it's become part of my daily life.
Thank you and the rest of the Pajiba writers for having the courage to sit through (or partially through) shitty movies and writing the reviews they deserve.
I've read this site almost everyday for three/four years, and I love it! Congratulations, Pajiba!

I don't think I've been here the whole 5 years, but awfully close - happy 5th! birthday! maybe I'll have (or share) a 5th later to celebrate which is the first thing I thought of when I wrote "5th" which is maybe why I love this site so much: I don't feel so alone (see Ted, et al). Congrats to all & thanks to Janet and Mr. Slower for laughing out loud today - the rest of you are making me feel... affectionate?

(And I used to think that it was PAH-jih-BAH, until I read that it's supposed to rhyme with a feature of female anatomy, at which point it became a little clearer...and now I'm wondering which part of the anatomy the "pah-jee-ba" fans among you thought it rhymed with...)

im a little drunk and distraught... (im on pajiba so thats nothing unusual)
i cant remember what my earliest pajiba moment was I just remember i liked the reviews and the recommendations of the television from the larry sanders show and how i met your mother to casablanca from the boozehound.
all i kno is pajiba is slowly making its way into my life and although i may be just the guy who claps good review im happy if someone replies to as message of mine. When I am away in a few weeks time I will go through withdrawls from the internet and the only real reason for that is you lot here at pajiba.

For this particular blog, I'd say a shirtless bust of RyRey. Naturally.

No, no, no.
Sweetdick. As in, I was going to kick that mothafucka to the curb, but then he sweetdicked me.
Posted by: Cindy at June 29, 2009 8:44 PM
I'm getting kind of fond of Glazeyween. If nothing else, I've got a new term to try out on the mister. "Hey, get that glazeyween over here, bitch." Sounds sort of German.
Posted by: Snuggiepants the Deathbringer at June 29, 2009 8:45 PM
My vote goes for "Honeycock".
Holy Godtopus that is beautiful.
"I was about to diss im, but he Honeycocked me and I just about swooned."
Glazyween makes me think of Krispy Kreme. Can they do that to a dick? (wrap it in a doughnut)

I don't have to tell you how much this site meant to Mrs. Pink over the last couple years. Before I started reading, I used to sit here wondering why she was cackling so damned much, and why she often found herself unable to breathe while pictures of RyRey littered her screen.
And to keep things nice and classy, how 'bout sweetmeat? Kind of rolls off the tongue (oh yes it does) and can be dropped in mixed company. But just barely.
I haven't been with this place long, but I visit often and honestly sometimes it makes my day. So, happy 5th and thanks for the fun. Sorry so sentimental, I'm hammered.

Honestly, you people have given me more hope that maybe there is some good in the world after all than any thing else I can think of. You're dirty, snarky people but goddamn if you don't look out for your own. Plus you also taught me that it's never too early to start drinking, so, cheers!

When work stresses me out I like to shut my office door and get through as many posts as I can until I am all smiles and fit for human consumption once again. Thanks people.

What got me into Pajiba oh so many years ago was the headlines. The way you guys subtly skewered whatever you were writing about in just a brief phrase, or a well-appropriated song lyric, was really impressive to me. Still is, really. So happy fifth anniversary to all my fellow Pajibans, and may Rowles and his apostles keep it up for at least another five.

Paraphase--- "I have wasted thousands and thousands of hours on you - hours that I thought were special because of your humor and your snark and all your sexual innuendo. I used to think that was the real you, when you bitched. But now I know you don't mean any of it. You're just a softy with a toddler with cold apple juice. Shame on me for commenting with my assiness on display."
So THAT'S what Dustin looks like! I sort of thought he'd have like an eyepatch and maybe a gold grill, and also possibly a tattoo on his face- like maybe a blowtorch or Hello Kitty.

(No, really - where? I can't be arsed to read Einstein and Hawking, I need the Eejit's Guide..)
Anyhoo, I love this place and the people here, present and past. All Hail Pajiba!
Dammitjanet, that was great. I want that on a scroll.
Should we be standing on a desk to recite it properly?

ahamos,
'sweetmeat', eh? Me likey. Let's use it in a sentence:
"Dustin's pet name for RyRey in his sexual fantasies is 'sweetmeat'."
Yeah, that works nicely!

Godtopusdammit! Of course, Pajiba turns 5 on a day I have to actually do work! So, I'll just be late to the party and get extra drunk this evening (that means 2 drinks, instead of 1) to celebrate.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am extremely lucky that I didn't find Pajiba until after I finished my grad program--or I never would have finished.
I love this site more than words can say. A hearty thank you to Dustin and the rest of the overlords, the Eloquents, the regular commenters, and the lurkers for making this place the fabulous site that it is.
Smooches!

OK, so either Lil'Pajiba is saying "thank you" or "fuck you". If it's the latter, Mr. Rowles you are an excellent father.
Pajiba, you rock. I've been lurking since a bit before the Dept of Homeland Security broohaha, and finally de-lurked a few months ago. Y'all rock, harder than a pina colada before a final exam (true story).

Tarn oh, absolutely. All the while looking like douchy prep school fucks and the only time Ethan Hawke has ever been washed in his entire life.
dammitjanet,
well yes, that's where I was going with that.... (except not totally, because I'm a soft touch for soppy films, so those things being taken into consideration, the damn scene still made me cry. Don't you judge me!)
Apparently Ethan Hawke is now appearing in a theatre near my office. I was wondering what the smell was.

Do us all a favor and leave a nice gift basket of soap, shampoo and deoderant. He looks like he needs it!
OK, so are we turning 5 like the precocious kid who speaks complete sentences in beautiful proper English and can't wait to get to school, or are we 5 like the kid who never says a word, just sits by the window and watches the wind chimes for hours at a time?

Congrats, guys! Still the best movie, music, books, general wise-assery site on the internets.
You know, I used to comment a lot more often here. I still read the site religiously. Thanks for five years of snarky fun. I don't always agree with your reviews (though I do more than I disagree) but they are always fun to read.
I do miss my TV Whore though.
Congratulations, guys.

whoa guys, didn't realize i had been lurking since pajiba's inception.
stumbled upon this place while i was working a summer in a library basement, with plenty of time to goof off.
thanks for the snark, and all the songs on my ipod which are the direct result of musical diversions.

I go away for one day and I miss an anniversary!? Pah. Anyway, I'm still very new here but I love it. Yay to all of you.
So what's the five-year anniversary gift for blogs? Liquor, porn or illegal fireworks?
