Wooo! College Football!

I was thinking about doing a Pajiba After Dark about 80’s TV but the only TV I watched during the 80’s starred Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, because I was born in 1986. I don’t actually have any memory of the 80’s, most of what I “know” about the 80’s comes from the entertainment of the era, ironically, so it’s all kind of a jumble of shoulder pads, perms, neon, and cocaine as far as I’m concerned. And the more I learn about it, the more I’m glad that I wasn’t old enough to form permanent memories before then. Of course, the 90’s gave us low rise bell bottoms again, belly button piercings, boy band hair, and dark lipstick in the daytime so it’s not like I’ve got bragging room. So if you’d like to talk about the television of the 80’s, my 80’s week gift to you is that I won’t call you old. Out loud. Here’s your Thursday night TV:

7:30pm: “Thursday Night College Football: Southern Miss at South Carolina” on ESPN. Fourteenth season premiere. I feel obligated to let you know that the Miami Hurricanes are also playing tonight, but since we’re playing Florida A&M we’re on ESPN 3 and probably only in this market. I realize the team doesn’t have the best reputation but it’s been a while since we had a brawl on the field or the players released a song about running a train on someone else’s girlfriend. Several of those men are now in the NFL. Go, Canes!

8:00pm: “Big Brother” on CBS

“Extreme Cuisine with Jeff Corwin” on Food Network

“The Universe” on History

9:00pm: “American Chopper” on TLC

“Pitchmen” on Discovery

“Project Runway” on Lifetime

“Rookie Blue” on ABC

“The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Smartest Inventions 2” on TruTV

10:00pm: “ABC New Special: Night Line Prime” on ABC. This week’s topic is “Secrets of Your Mind: Why We Do What We Do.” I hate shows like this because they take perfectly valid scientific research or biological facts and twist them around into these bizarre theories that then worm their way into society as “facts” and so forever afterwards you have to deal with That Guy who goes around at parties talking about how love and eating a piece of chocolate are chemically identical in the brain or however that goes. I tend not to listen long enough to get to the end of that speech.

“Ace of Cakes” on Food Network

“BBQ Pit Masters” on TLC

“Come Dine With Me” on BBCA

“Futurama” on Comedy Central. Sixth season finale and the 100th episode.

“Jersey Shore” on MTV

“NICU” on Health

“The Squad” on A&E

“Stan Lee’s Superhumans” on History

“Top 20 Most Shocking” on TruTV

“You’re Wearing That?!?” on WE

10:30pm: “Family Style” on Food Network

“On the Road with Austin and Santino” on Lifetime

Late Night Listings

“The Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS featuring Will Arnett, Tommy Johnagin, and Karen Elson

“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on NBC featuring Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, Steve Buscemi, Herbie Hancock, and Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks

“Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on NBC featuring Rachel Maddow, Jon Glaser, and Heart

Project Runwaaaaaaaaaay! wooooo! vengeance shall be ours!

Project Runway is going to be fantastic tonight. All I know is it's a public votes episode that led to Tim having to hold up a hand-written sign and beg people to show up on the streets of NYC. That should lead to your standard "OMG the public are idiots wait we can't say that...uh...uh...[crickets]" judging session. Those are always a hoot.

I'm with figgy, can't wait for PR.
Last week might have been one of the most cracktastic runway meltdowns ever.
I love Gretchen's crazy....

For the next 10 days, the US Open is on ESPN 2 weeknights from 1:00 PM to about 1:00 AM Eastern and on CBS on the weekends. Just for all none of you who are interested.

Bonus information -- I am massively hot for Mardy Fish, who won his second round match today:

WHAT? Damn, you people are fetuses. Feti? Fetti? Fetii?

Whatever, the 80s were AWESOME. And they were a great decade to be a teenager in, second only to what I imagine the 70s would have been like (I firmly believe the 70s were probably the greatest decade EVER to be a teenager---the SHIT those people got away with was epic).

There's a black guy on the Green Bay Packers who's name is Kregg Lumpkin. Since Homer Simpson is 1/32nd black, do you think he could be the love child of Homer and Lurleen Lumpkin?

Posted by: Three-nineteen at September 2, 2010 10:56 PM

No? Then maybe he's the love child of Dan Castallanetta and Beverly D'Angelo.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at September 2, 2010 11:50 PM

Snuggie,

Agreed. Being a teenager in the 80s was awesome (not really pun intended), but I always figured being a teenager in the 70s would have been the greatest experience in the history of civilization.

Relatedly, I have a gay flight attendant friend about my age, and we've often talked about how ridiculously awesome it would have been to be a gay flight attendant in the 70s. The drugs! The sex! (Pre-AIDS fear.) And then he always has to point out, "Of course, I'd be dead now." And I always have to say, "Well, yeah, there's that."

Football?

That's one thing he hated, the noise, noise, noise, NOISE.

" it’s all kind of a jumble of shoulder pads, perms, neon, and cocaine"

I was a teenager during the 80's (H.S. Class of '86, bitches!). Throw in lingere as clothing, giant-ass mismatched earrings, and anklet socks with pumps, and that was pretty much exactly what it WAS like.
