Tonight on TV

melrose-place-poster1.jpg

As I mentioned last week, we’re doing away with the nightly comment diversions, if only because after 180 of them thus far, it’s become difficult to conjure up a nightly topic (we will continue with weekly comment diversions, in addition to the newly installed weekend hijack thread). Still, I like the idea that our readers often gather here in the evening to shoot the bacon and chew the shit, so to speak. And with the fall television season upon us, what better excuse to gather around the computer, drink the alcoholic beverage of your choice, and ignore your loved ones than television.

So, finally, here’s something to center Pajiba After Dark around: Television, of both the good and bad variety. Each weekday (and Sunday), we will run down the highlights on that particular night of television to not just serve as a reminder of what’s on, but to give you something to chat about. I would warn those on the West Coast, however, from entering the thread until the particular episodes have aired in your time zone, so as to avoid spoilers.

The nightly highlights should improve once the fall television is in full swing, but for now, here’s what you have to look forward to tonight (or not, as the case may be):

8:00

— The Season Finale of “10 Things I Hate About You,” on ABC Family.

— The Second Season Premier of “90210” on The CW.

9:00

— The premiere of “Melrose Place” on The CW.

— “Warehouse” on SyFy

— “Dragon’s Den” on BBC America (Is this show any good?)

10:00

— “Sons of Anarchy” second season premiere on FX.

We’ll leave you with a trailer for “Melrose Place” 2.0

Nothing like a tv lineup including both Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place to make a girl feel like she's back in the 90's.

Posted by: Jeni at September 8, 2009 7:14 PM

I will be watching the Psych season four episodes that I haven't caught yet.

As for Melrose...NO. Though I thought Katie Cassidy did a good job on Harper's Island (SHUT UP. It was SO FUN)and Laura Leighton hasn't aged a fucking day. She must subsist solely on Heather Locklear's sweat infused directly into an IV.

Posted by: Julie at September 8, 2009 7:24 PM

Damn... I may have to start watching TV again.

Posted by: Spender at September 8, 2009 7:26 PM

I may have to start watching TV again too, but not tonight.

Posted by: SaBrina at September 8, 2009 7:36 PM

Wait what, 90210 is in its second season? Where have I been? Tonight I shall be doing my homework (Victorian England anyone) in order to prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ our Lord tomorrow, aka. So You Think You Can Dance.

Posted by: Jasper Buckleman at September 8, 2009 7:41 PM

Between television and film, it's like a contest to see who can use the least original ideas. Ack.

Posted by: Cindy at September 8, 2009 7:41 PM

I'm with you Jasper.

Posted by: Cindy at September 8, 2009 7:45 PM

I've never seen the BBC Dragon's Den, but the CBC version is pretty darned entertaining. High praise from a staunch reality TV hater. I don't catch it regularly, but when I do, I'm often quite amazed at the completely bizarre ideas some people will stake their life savings on.

Posted by: meaux at September 8, 2009 8:01 PM

Umm, when did the chick cop from Angel show up on 90210? Y'know, the one who left that show she was on with "Is this because I'm a lesbian?" I don't actually know what show that was 'cause I never watched it, but I'm pretty sure somebody knows what it is. Is it the one with what's-his-name? With the glasses, and the ass? Also, I think she was a cop on that one too!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 8, 2009 8:08 PM

ALLso, why does Drunkface talk through her damn nose all the time? God, she's so nasally, all up in her nasal.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 8, 2009 8:10 PM

Anna von B Elizabeth Rohm who played Kate . . .something on Angel then was an ADA on Law & Order original style. I can't believe she's back on the WB (the UPN part of the CW just kind of fizzled out there, didn't it?).

Also, of special not for anyone seeking a bit of hotness to hold them over until the return of Supernatural on Thursday: Rafael Nadal is playing at the US Open tonight.

Posted by: foursweatervests at September 8, 2009 8:22 PM

*of special NOTE

dammit. Rafa scrambled my brain.

Posted by: foursweatervests at September 8, 2009 8:23 PM

Is that the girl who played Derek's girlfriend on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles in that Melrose Place trailer? That's just sad. Again, Fuck you FOX.

Posted by: jM at September 8, 2009 8:25 PM

ROHM! I thought that but then I thought that was someone else. Thanks, foursweatervests!

In other news, I have TERRIBLE taste in television.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 8, 2009 8:26 PM

AvB-we ALL do :p I am switching between the Phillies' game, Deep Rising, and watching trailers OnDemand. All this before Waking Ned Devine comes on (an underappreciated gem if I ever saws one).

My life is a carousel of whimsy.

Posted by: Julie at September 8, 2009 8:29 PM

But I have homework. And I have to wake up early. And I don't wanna watch any of those. And I'm whiny.

Posted by: coryo at September 8, 2009 8:29 PM

Coryo-watch Deep Rising with me. Then I don't have to feel so stupid.

Posted by: Julie at September 8, 2009 8:31 PM

I have homework too, Coryo. And dishes, and laundry. And NONE OF THEM ARE GETTING DONE. So I can feed my addiction to awful, awful television.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 8, 2009 8:34 PM

Wait... what?! are rich people in Beverly Hills doing HIP HOP LINE DANCING??

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 8, 2009 8:37 PM

Julie, I love watching the OnDemand trailers, too. That's how I found Toolbox Murders.

Posted by: jM at September 8, 2009 9:01 PM

Apparently The Husband wants to make sure that the DVR becomes a den of suck. I was just pulled away from Ace of Cakes because he recorded 90210, Melrose Place, AND Big Brother Infinity. Suck suck suck. I'm going to bed kids.

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits (aka Dangle McGee) at September 8, 2009 9:02 PM

seriously, dustin, the weekend thread was AWESOME. it was nice to hang out with everyone. and in the spirit of not-being-a-clique, i even spoke to a few people i never noticed before.

bucdaddy rules!

now, on topic. as for tonight's tv, i'm just going to watch hell's kitchen. fuck these 90210-y shows.

Posted by: gp at September 8, 2009 9:10 PM

OMG that's totally Parker! I'm still mad at him for being a douche to Buffy.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 8, 2009 9:15 PM

I don't know if anyone else has seen this, but I caught a banner ad for Melrose Place today that proclaims "Tuesday is the new hump day." Either I'm taking that in a completely unintended way...or I'm getting exactly what they're trying to say and it is disgusting.

Posted by: stewey at September 8, 2009 9:23 PM

Screw TV. I'm watching DVD's of "All Creatures Great and Small." Ummmmm, Peter Davison.

Posted by: BWeaves at September 8, 2009 9:35 PM

I've been wanting to watch Sons of Anarchy because I have a strange love for Katey Sagal that I can't quite explain. She's just awesome for reasons ineffable.

Posted by: Saint Saturn Sunshine at September 8, 2009 9:41 PM

Ooh, BWeaves, is that the fellow who played Tristan, by any chance? My crush on Tristan from the books carried over nicely to the small screen, from what little I saw of the series.

Posted by: meaux at September 8, 2009 9:54 PM

I'm trying Sons of Anarchy. I'm a virgin!

Posted by: Cindy at September 8, 2009 10:02 PM

Saint Saturn Sunshine...your love for Katy Sagal is TOTALLY explainable. She is delightful and charming and so naturally pretty and just wonderful in every way.

Posted by: Julie at September 8, 2009 10:05 PM

DUDE. Glee premiere tomorrow. Whee!

I'm watching Big Love. Our HBO shows it pretty delayed, but I'm catching up. It's a really...strange show. Everyone in it is sorta creepy.

Posted by: figgy at September 8, 2009 10:14 PM

My latest guilty pleasure is "Rehab: Party at the Hard Rock." It's trashy and stupid and . . . and it's trashy and stupid. But I did see a guido hook up with a post-op TS, a moment of tolerance I found touching.

Posted by: Tracer Bulet at September 8, 2009 10:19 PM

Julie- I have no idea what that is, but I'm sold. And Anna, that moving picture box has been the death of too many promising souls. But death is so dramatic and I'm feeling plenty dramatic right now, so TV it is!

Posted by: coryo at September 8, 2009 10:19 PM

Tracer, i LOVE rehab:PatHR! i'm a sucker for cops, tru tv's "most" whatever, competition shows of the vh1 variety. but rehab! thems some partyin skanks. wanna get high and eat some corn pops? i gotta have my pops.

Posted by: gp at September 8, 2009 11:23 PM

stewey, that "hump day" ad has been on a bus stop outside my work for over a week, and yes, of course they meant it that way, and yes, it is disgusting, and yes, I dearly wish one of the first thoughts of my mornings did not have to be of some airbrushed teenager humping Ashlee Simpson (who is possibly committing the sacrilege of pretending to be heir to ZombieSydney's bipolar, murderous throne, which I'm only guessing because they both have red hair but I refuse to watch the show).

Posted by: SaBrina at September 8, 2009 11:41 PM

I skipped animal planet's ratzilla in order to watch the films "surveillance" and "cemetery man". I wonder if ratzilla was any good.

Posted by: laredo at September 8, 2009 11:46 PM

I was thinking about watching 90210 and then Melrose Place but I found a DVD of my last colonoscopy where the camera tore part of the wall of my lower intestine. I think that will be a more pleasurable experience than watching Ashlee Simpson try to act.

SaBrina, I spoke with someone at CW a while back in regards to the Hump Day sign, it could have been worse. Here is a rejected sign they tried to get.

C U Next Tuesday.

I think that was how it was going to be spelled. I can only imagine the hell that would have broken loose if that went up.

Posted by: Rubble44 at September 9, 2009 12:38 AM

laredo, it cannot possibly be better than Cemetary man. I don't care what anybody says, flying zombie head wins.
I don't have tv, but I am force-feeding a friend youtube videos of Ms. Hannigan to convince him that gin is a drink for claaaassssy ladies only, because he loves it and I am evil.

Posted by: s. pisaster at September 9, 2009 12:58 AM

Figgy, I just finished watching the first season of Big Love on DVD, and I find it disconcerting how creepy all the characters seem, even when they're doing totally random, normal things. The whole things seems so sinister, like a horror movie and I keep waiting for something terrible to happen. But I kind of love that. It's like watching an unfinished David Lynch show.

Also, can't wait for Glee tomorrow. I've heard this episode, "Showmance", is even better than the pilot.

Posted by: Christina at September 9, 2009 1:22 AM

Seriously, Rubble? Wow, the CW is trying reaaaally hard to be edgy.

Posted by: SaBrina at September 9, 2009 1:26 AM

Christina: yes! the whole thing just seems so...sordid all the time. And wait til the next seasons, it gets a lot crazier. Also completely impossible to stop watching, it really hooks you.

Did anyone else catch the premiere of Melrose? Or am I the only one who was bored enough? And who had to suffer Ashlee Simpsons' stupid, stupid face?

At least that one guy was cute.

Posted by: figgy at September 9, 2009 1:27 AM

It was completely possible for me to stop watching Big Love after watching the first season on DVD. By the second half I was only half-watching anyways. My attention was diverted by endless games of solitaire. TV lost out to solitaire. Not even spider solitaire! That says something.

Posted by: SaBrina at September 9, 2009 1:38 AM

Aw. You didn't find yourself oddly drawn to Bill Paxton's deadpan delivery and bizarre sex magics that make THREE WOMEN want to bone him?

Cos I am.

Posted by: figgy at September 9, 2009 1:51 AM

Regardless of the shitty reviews for both 90210 and Melrose Place they both serve their purpose as being mindless, drama filled, catastrophicly hilarious television shows! Say what you like, but they do fulfil the quota of providing some (at times stereotypical and completely unrealistic) drama. ;)

Posted by: Jennifer at September 9, 2009 2:01 AM

Figgy, I love how the sex is the least scandalous aspect (so far).

Also, I watched a bit of Melrose Place, until the car pulled up by the police station and the car doors opened vertically (was it a Delorean??) and you saw that Dr. Mancini was Auggie's dad. All of a sudden it was all just too much. I never watched the original series, and now, I'd rather get my cheese from True Blood, CSI: Miami or Grey's Anatomy , the latter two of which are perfect for drinking games.

Posted by: Christina at September 9, 2009 3:44 AM

I may have to watch Melrose Place now that I know Kendra Shaw of BSG: Razor is in it. Love her!

Posted by: rona at September 9, 2009 4:21 AM

that whole Tuesday is the new hump day.. well Tuesday is my hump day since I work Sunday — Thursday.

Posted by: Arib at September 9, 2009 4:52 AM

Meaux: Yes, Peter Davison played Tristan. I've had a love of the name Tristan ever since. He was also "The Dish of the Day" in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (TV version), and the 5th Doctor in Dr. Who, and Campion, and The Last Detective, and a ton of other stuff.

Posted by: BWeaves at September 9, 2009 9:16 AM

You know what just warms my heart? That Mischa Barton left the OC because she wanted to 'start her movie career', only to go into obscurity for 4 years and come back to tv to play....Marissa Cooper the Sequel. Her character on this new show is a beautiful skinny rich girl who drinks and takes drugs.

Way to spread your wings Mischa.

Posted by: buttercup at September 9, 2009 9:22 AM

Dragon's Den is good TV. I'm not at home on Tuesday nights, but TiVo gets it for me whenever they air it.

Basically, it's a show where business pitches (often pretty lame) get eviscerated on television by people who seem to know what they're talking about and are putting up their *own* money. I know there's supposed to be a US version coming up, but if they ruin it like they did Kitchen Nightmares, I'll be pissed.

Posted by: Wednesday at September 9, 2009 10:18 AM

holy crap guys, SoA completely kicked my ass last night. if it can maintain this level of quality, it will be a worthy successor to it's fantastic predecessor, The Shield.

you guys want to be sauntering your fine asses over to this here bandwagon right...about...now.

Posted by: trippdup at September 9, 2009 11:00 AM

I've actually been really into "Warehouse 13" on SyFy. Yeah, so every episode is basically the same thing, but it's amusing anyway. Though I'm getting really tired of someone saying in some variation, in every episode, "So what interest does the Secret Service have in this?"

Posted by: Snath at September 9, 2009 11:26 AM

Totally late in responding but: thank you, Julie! You are so right. She is so charming and lovely and I I could listen to her voice all day.
I think I find my love for her odd because like... NONE of my friends ever seem to remember (or care) who she is and I always have to say, "Locke's girlfriend from Lost." It's lonely.

Posted by: Saint Saturn Sunshine at September 9, 2009 11:34 AM

Really ?lol.........Just heard that he is ho-oking up with a nice gi-rl on the inter-esting cl-ub called: ____Ta ll con nect Co M____, really ? Sounds it is a famoaus on-line service.

Posted by: Sandra23 at September 9, 2009 12:47 PM

I'm only part-way through season 1 of Sons of Anarchy. I have a backlog of tv shows which could keep me entertained for months, if I had time to sit and watch it. I really need to stop having a life. Anyhoo, it's very good, and Ron Perlman was born to wear originals. So I will happily start stockpiling season 2.
Minor point: as a Brit, I have no clue how convincing Charlie Hunnan's accent is. Anybody want to chime in with an opinion on that?

I've watched most of Warehouse 13, and to me it's 'ironing telly' - I can watch it and do the ironing at the same time, secure in the knowledge that I won't miss much. It's intelligence level is about that of Charmed, that woman's upper lip (way too much collagen) is deeply distracting, and the lead guy is Boreanaz-lite. But I enjoy watching Saul Rubinek, and apparently Mark Sheppard is in an episode at some point, so, what the hell. I can always find some ironing to do....

Posted by: Tarn at September 9, 2009 2:34 PM

Way late to the party but I can't watch "Sons of Anarchy" until the next day. However this season is going to get BLOODY. That ending was brutal, going to be really interesting to see how Gemma emerges from this. It will be nice to see Katey really dig into the character. She was good, but a bit of a Lady Macbeth last season.

I saw in Variety today the premiere smashed the FX viewing records too and solidly crushed Melrose Place, Big Brother, and everything else Tuesday night. Doesn't look like SoA is going to the scrap heap like The Riches (tragically) did.
