Last night we learned that a healthy chunk of the Pajiba After Dark community were students of some kind or another who were busily putting off studying, writing, or other school related work. The good news for all of us students busy procrastinating is that there’s not a lot to distract you on TV tonight, new show-wise. The bad news, as I’m already well aware, is that there’s still re-runs and the internet out there to distract you, which is really my biggest problem. Even if I take myself over to campus to get away from the TV, I still end up browsing my facebook every ten minutes or so, like anything important ever actually happens on facebook. Also, I’m sure your room could use some straightening up. Do you have any laundry to do? Say, wouldn’t a snack be great right now? I’m a terribly evil person sometimes, and here’s your Tuesday night offerings:

8:00 p.m.: “90210” on The CW.

“The Biggest Loser” on NBC, 8th Season Finale.

“So You Think You Can Dance” on FOX.

8:30 p.m.: “Lanny and Wayne the Christmas Elves in Prep and Landing” on ABC. And things like this, ladies and gentlemen, are why I’m not a big fan of Christmas. Inevitably, this program will be peppered with commercials for expensive yet shoddily made toys that children will demand for Christmas, only to make themselves heartbroken and their parents feel hideously guilty when they don’t get them for Christmas. Never mind that I can’t imagine it’s going to be anything other than an uncreative retread of some tired Christmas theme involving the “saving” of Christmas by someone other than Santa. Yes, Christmas makes me curmudgeonly. Deal with it.

9:00 p.m.: “18 Kids and Counting” on TLC. Michelle Duggar was reportedly rushed to the hospital last night after experiencing complications with her current pregnancy, which is lucky number 19. How this woman has not experienced uterine prolapse (warning: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT GOOGLE IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT IS) I can’t begin to imagine.

“Dirty Jobs” on Discovery.

“I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant” on Health.

“Melrose Place” on The CW.

“Scrubs” on ABC.

9:30 p.m.: “Better Off Ted” on ABC, 2nd Season Premiere.

10:00 p.m.: “The Bad Girls Club” on Oxygen.

“Independent Lens: Between the Folds” on PBS.

“The Jay Leno Show” on NBC.

“The Secret Lives of Women: Cat Ladies” on WE.

“Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” on Bravo. Another Miami salon I’m not familiar with. Given how many have popped up on this show I’m beginning to be glad I wait to get my hair cut until I’m back in Maryland.

Intern Rusty is a Masters student at the University of Miami. You can learn more about her at Rusty’s Ventures.

Better off Ted! I've missed this show way too much.

Posted by: Claire at December 8, 2009 7:02 PM

Coincidentally, I just read today that the Duggar lady is pregnant again so I looked up her birthin' history online. In the last 20 years she has never gone more than a year without being pregnant. And a year is on the generous side. Can you imagine? I had three children in quick succession and I can tell you, if I had left my body capable of getting pregnant again I would have ended up in the loony bin. I seriously don't think I could have recovered from another go around. I just...I'm speechless.

Posted by: katy at December 8, 2009 7:15 PM

Wow, there is just nothing on Tuesday nights.

Posted by: Minty at December 8, 2009 7:16 PM

-- "I didn't know I was pregnant" on Health --
Wow, all the facinating stuffs I'm missing by sticking with the bunny ears on
my tv.

Seriously though !? REALLY. Ya didn't know you were pregnant? How could
that have possibly happened [eyes wide and dumbfounded]. Was it between
'kicking em high' or 'spreadn them wide' ? Or Maybe (call it a hunch), where
you decided to skip the raincoat... How about each morning when you take
a shower, hop on a scale or glaze at yourself in a mirror?

Am I taking this too literally? Is there another angle here?

I'm excited for Better Off Ted. Finally something good for Tuesdays.

Posted by: Precious Lilywhite at December 8, 2009 7:22 PM

Ms MoMo, See my above post. There was never a day that went by where I couldn't tell I was pregnant.

Again, baffled.

Posted by: katy at December 8, 2009 7:25 PM

@katy: Agreed. Cannot believe that Dugger family / lady. How could you
possibly do that to your body again and again, x's 19? No need to look up
prolapsed uteri for me. It happens in dogs too.

Posted by: Ms MoMo at December 8, 2009 7:29 PM

Damn, there's a lot of coochie on tv tonight. Look: "18 Kids and Counting," "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant," "The Bad Girls Club," and "Independent Lens: Between the Folds."

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at December 8, 2009 7:30 PM

That Duggar breeder and her creepy family are many levels for wrong.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 8, 2009 7:34 PM

Your warning fell on deaf ears (blind eyes?), Rusty. Google lists "chronic coughing" as one possible cause of uterine prolapse. Can you imagine?!? Coughing so hard that your damn uterus falls out?!?

Yay student procrastination club! OK, but seriously, thank Godtopus or lousy TV. I'm totally fucked this week.

Posted by: esme at December 8, 2009 7:43 PM

Rusty:
Waiting until you get back to Maryland? Huh. I usually try to have my hair cut before I go back to Maryland so my family doesn't think I've become a lunatic.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at December 8, 2009 7:46 PM

Funny you should mention procrastinating studentry... I am currently supposed to be writing a paper that was due YESTERDAY. Asked for an extension and got one, now it has to be done tonight (technically, I have until tomorrow morning at 11, but since I have a day job, tonight it is!).

I will, in a likelihood, be up until midnight ONCE AGAIN, and be a cranky-ass bitch tomorrow, ONCE AGAIN. Poop. Stupid Facebook. Stupid Pajiba. Stop distracting me!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at December 8, 2009 7:48 PM

“The Secret Lives of Women: Cat Ladies” on WE.

Really? REALLY??!?

Thank God I actually have a social activity [git yer mind outta the gutter!!] to do tonight. (Shocking, I know.)

Just watched Somersault so I thought I'd tell you about it. Good movie. It's Australian. It's about a girl who kisses her mum's boyfriend and then leaves home. The adventures, trials and tribulations she goes through and shit. Acts very grown up at times but she's just a little girl. Very human. Interesting and well made. Got quite a bit of fucking, and some nude scenes. Oh, and a gay kissing scene. I know some of you like watching two guys getting it on. I'm off to bed cos it's almost 3am

“I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant” on Health.

Seriously, how on earth.

Like Mad Men Season 1 Finale, Peggy is walking around, then suddenly, OOPS SPOILERS, she's pregnant? Uh what? Hello? And then the kids pops out literally 15 minutes later in the episode. Didn't make any goddamn sense. For such a good show, that sequence was just bizarre and bothered me a lot. Yet to watch Season 2 though.

"I’m sure your room could use some straightening up. Do you have any laundry to do? Say, wouldn’t a snack be great right now?"

Not really. Did it already. ... That would be pretty great. Cuss you.

So I was supposed to have a paper due today at 5:30pm and because I had been procrastinating so much, I woke up today at 6am to start working on it. Yeah I know, no time like the present. BUT! Around 9 this morning I broke down and decided to check Facebook to entertain myself. A classmate's status said our prof had emailed the class and given us an extension!!!! I was both excited and annoyed because I've been dealing with a cold/flu/illness and was so sad to have gotten up so early.

I ended up going back to bed and now I'm "working" on it, so yeah. Facebook saves lives!

Holy crap, these people usually live IN THE WOODS with their one year old!!

I am sorry, friends...you guys are young, true, but their are programs and services so that you don't have to live in the woods WITH YOUR CHILD. I can list four off the top of my head, even if your husband is a convicted felon...

Which, by the way, good on ya for marrying a guy who GOT DRUNK AND STOLE A CAR.

If the end of this episode is not social services taking her child, I will be enraged.

Posted by: NotesOnMyBathroomMirror at December 8, 2009 9:45 PM

Well I had a paper due today, but I teach during the day. So I stayed up all night, and then taught all day. Caffeine = my bff.

Bad TV nights are why God created extra outdoor decorating projects. I spent three hours designing, building, priming, and drafting a Santa's Workshop for the yard display. I'd probably still be painting it right now if my ride didn't need to leave.

Of course, outside of the 9 papers I have to finish, I also technically needed to reteach myself the piano part for Blow, Gabriel, Blow from Anything Goes for an audition callback I'm playing tomorrow. Yesterday, I played Cole Porter for four hours straight. This morning, I woke up with the fingers on my right hand wrapped around each other and the fingers on my left hand locked in a C. It's been far too long since I've abused my poor wrists and hands with musicianship. They got accustomed to not being destroyed everyday. Now there's a much longer recovery time and that just won't work for this gig. I'm used to my wrist sounding like a cement mixer, but right now it's being accompanied by the dueling jackhammers of my hands. I'm my own rhythm section.

I am highly cheered to see so many other students putting off big papers. I have one that just will not get itself written. Plus, I get to grade 18 student portfolios this weekend. Needeless to say, my DVD player will be getting a lot of action this weekend.

And tonight was different from, any other TV night how?

Bad news: Ballectomy later today (and dammit it would have to be no-whining Wednesday).

Good news? Nearly two solid weeks of network TV!

19 kids? Nice choice if you lean towards incest.

Prep & Landing was pretty damn good. Rapid fire jokes, solid animation, clever premise, Dave Foley, and it came from John Lasseter so I'm not sure why all you Pixar geeks dismissed it. Your loss.

"uterine prolapse" was covered heavily in James Herriot's "All Creatures Great and Small" so I'm already familiar with the subject, and don't need a visual when reading about it was awful enough.

For those who think there's nothing on Tuesdays, watch SYTYCD. The results show on Wednesday is mostly a lot of filler, with too much rehashing of what happened the night before, too much effort at suspense, usually one horrific "musical act", and a bunch of solos that have no effect on the outcome so I don't know why they bother. I tape it and watch it later so I can skim through the boring parts.

But the performance show on Tuesday is almost always enjoyable, filled with nothing but dance and some interesting critiques. I was on the phone part of the time but even with the TV on mute I could tell that Ellenore and Legacy were kicking ass with their Travis routine. Stellar stuff. Their second routine--meh. NapeTabs (which is such a retarded couple's name--can we please go back to using their individual ones, please, please?) seem to have lost their mojo. I thought for sure that with all the side-by-side synchronized moves that Laurie person was responsible.

Jakob and Mollee were lovely. I'm not a huge Mollee fan (she always seems to be thinking very hard about what her next move is instead of being in the moment) and being paired with Jakob undoubtedly helped her, but I was moved by their waltz, and Mollee has never before made me feel anything other than "aw, how cute."

Poor Russell once again had to make do with assistants instead of an actual partner, so the chemistry was lacking but his moves were awesome.

Ryan annoys me too much on a personal level for me to enjoy his dancing, even if it's technically great. I didn't get the standing ovation for their last number--seemed like the cool ending is what got everyone excited and not the dance as a whole.

I felt bad for Ashleigh that she couldn't perform because of her injury, but not so much that I voted for her. It didn't seem fair to the other dancers that had to go out on stage and perform. Ryan's weepy begging at the end of the show didn't help either, nor did his comment "I think America would like to see a married couple in the finale." Dude, I don't give a crap that you're married. People should be voting for you because you're a great performer, AND THAT'S ALL. I am sick and tired of this emphasis on their marriage, sick and tired of all the shots of them making out or acting cutesy. Lots of people are married--it doesn't make you special, and it shouldn't factor into whether or not you win a dance competition.

Plus, while he and Ashleigh are great technically, their performances always come out as shallow to me. I don't know if it's their background as ballroom dancers, but they always seem to be posing or acting, and nothing feels genuine. I haven't been moved by anything they've done.

DeadBessie: There was some great stuff going on last night on SYTYCD's performance show - you're right, Jakob and Mollee were just killing it. At this point I think Jakob would have to start murdering puppies on stage for The Mrs. Ghost Who Woks and I to think he can do any wrong, he is just ridiculously good. I wasn't all that impressed with Mollee at first, but she really seems to be improving by leaps and bounds now that she's rid of Nathan. And Legacy and Ellenore's first routine was just... wow. Second not so much (Tabitha and Napoleon did 'em no favors with the routine), but the first one was excellent. And no partner for Russell AGAIN, yet he just keeps on smiling and brings it every time he gets on the stage.

What? I'm not completely, utterly ashamed to admit that I watch (and enjoy) it. Only mildly embarrassed, at worst.
