I Don't Think We Have a Wagon, But a Funny Looking Tank Might Drop By

welcome-sign.jpg

I just want to start this off by thanking all the people who came out to play in the lurkers thread. We love new people! And please don’t apologize for not being funny, because trust me I’m DEFINITELY not funny all the time and I somehow tripped into writing for the site. After hanging around like, forever. (Or about four years. Give or take.) Hell, the time I won EE was for a comment that no one else in the thread responded to and I’d basically given up as a dud. My point is not to get worried if people don’t respond to you at first, just keep saying what you want to say and we’ll catch on eventually. Even after I’d been commenting a while there were plenty of times no one talked back to me. It just comes and goes like any discussion among a large group of people. Honestly one of the things I love about this site more than anything is that there’s a lot of really smart people and some very intelligent discourse can take place without it devolving into a flame war, and the more people we can get in on that the better. I guess now’s about the time I should tell you what’s on TV tonight:

8:00pm: “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” on NBC

“So You Think You Can Dance” on FOX, which is apparently a crowd favorite so if you’re a fan of the show, totally jump in on the comments.

8:30pm: “The Middle” on ABC

“The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!” on CBS

“Dog the Bounty Hunter” on A&E. Sixth season premiere.

“Friday Night Lights” on DirecTV

“Glee” on FOX

“Mythbusters” on Discovery. The blurb says this episode is called “Antacid Jail Break” so not only will this episode involve explosions (I’m pretty sure it’s in M-5’s contract that EVERY episode of “Mythbusters” must have an explosion) but it could be quite topical for some of you out there, depending on how you’re planning to spend your holidays. Already got the feeling that you’re going to take a fruitcake and bludgeon the neighbor with the singing Christmas decorations to death? Best to learn how to evade incarceration early.

9:30pm: “Dog the Bounty Hunter” on A&E

10:00pm: “Eastwick” on ABC

“The Jay Leno Show” on NBC, featuring Dane Cook and Kim Kardashian. Do you think when that much vapid is in one room it creates a black hole? And then the Jay Leno show would disappear forever? Probably not, but I like that thought.

“Nip/Tuck” on FX

“Christmas with the Annie Moses Band” on PBS

“The Real World/Road Rules Challenge” on MTV

“Steven Seagal: Lawman” on A&E, series premiere. I’m betting some of you out there are just itching to watch Seagal sheriff it up. Yeah you are. Don’t lie.

“Top Chef” on Bravo. Part 1 of the finale. I’d say I’m “Team Jen” but I don’t want to be confused with those people who still feel personally affected by the break up of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, so I’ll just say I’m hoping for a good clean fight.

“Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” on TBS

10:30pm: “Steven Seagal: Lawman” on A&E

“Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns” on TBS

Not to mention a double-dose of Modern Family...

Posted by: sansho1 at December 2, 2009 7:13 PM

ABC Family - 7:00 PST
2 hours of Pixar shorts.

Posted by: Drake at December 2, 2009 7:14 PM

Drake and sansho1, neither of those showed up on the site I use for listings, so thanks for pointing them out!

Posted by: Intern Rusty at December 2, 2009 7:19 PM

I think Modern Family is my favorite new show, even beating out Glee (but just by a little). I have been quoting Phil nonstop from last week:

"I am brave. Roller coasters? I love ‘em. Scary movies? I’ve seen Ghostbusters like seven times. I regularly drive through neighborhoods that have only recently been gentrified. So yeah, I’m pretty much not afraid of anything."

It's the Ghostbusters line that kills me.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at December 2, 2009 7:20 PM

Steven Seagal: Lawman caused me to break three toes. Yet I will still watch you Seagal!

Posted by: Nieve 'The Threadkiller Queen' at December 2, 2009 7:24 PM

Americans do know it's not Christmas yet right?

I love Modern Family. When it ends the season, good thing another of the favorites in Better Off Ted will be coming back. I think. Hope. Please God.

Posted by: arrrghzi at December 2, 2009 7:42 PM

Dont Forget Jesse Ventura's Conspiracy Theory on TruTV!

Posted by: JFD at December 2, 2009 7:50 PM

In my further attempts at de-lurking (thanks for the welcome, Intern Rusty!), I too will express my love for Modern Family. Phil has some great lines, but he walks the line for me between funny and just uncomfortably obnoxious. He reminds me of a bumbling, less politically incorrect David Brent from the Office.

Posted by: Precious Lilywhite at December 2, 2009 7:55 PM

Mel! I cackled like a mad-woman at that line too. But what really killed me - the ass-kicking clown pointing very seriously at his huge clock. It might have something to do with my personal experiences with clowns.....

Posted by: stardust at December 2, 2009 8:09 PM

Well, the 8:00 listing I had for Modern Family was incorrect, at least in the Atlanta market. No, our local affiliate is instead showing a special on cleft palate kids. And you know, it breaks my heart. But no freaking way can I watch that after expecting MF....

Posted by: sansho1 at December 2, 2009 8:09 PM

The comedic delivery in Modern Family is what makes it so great. All of the characters have a wonderful grasp of how to let a pregnant silence ripen til it pops. That's how babies work right? My analogy stands.

Posted by: Ulterior Motive Girl at December 2, 2009 8:19 PM

Better Off Ted starts up next Tuesday after Scrubs. Yay!

In other great news for me, for the first time ever Time Warner has not completely screwed me over. Starting today, I get BBC America in HD. Which means I get to see the last three episodes of Doctor Who in HD.

David Tennant. In HD.

Daaaaaavid Tennnnnannnnt. In AAAAACHE DEEEEEEEE.

DAVID TENNANT! IN HD!

Posted by: Three-nineteen at December 2, 2009 8:19 PM

Here is my preference for Top Chef.

Kevin (if he is this good w/o fancy shmancy training, think of how amazing he'll be if he gets the money/opportunity to work with other amazing chefs)

Jen (By far the most talented female contestant the show has ever had, so I want a talented woman to win) [I will concede that no-one does desert better than carla, but Stephanie was just decent, the other top chefs would destroy her in a cook-off]

Brian (the nicer of the brothers, excellent chef, just seems a little too set in his ways)

Douche McGee: (I usually don't mind arrogance, after all, Hung is my favorite chef, but Hung backed it up and didn't target others. I really don't want him to win.)

With that said, I would say that the top 6 (excluding Robin) are all better chefs then freaking Hosea, which shows how much of a fluke that result was, and why he gets NO air time.

Posted by: "luker" the barbarian at December 2, 2009 8:26 PM

The Modern Family at 7 (8 Eastern) is a rerun. The real Modern Family episode is at 8 (9 Eastern).

Posted by: Three-nineteen at December 2, 2009 8:28 PM

Do we REALLY have to mention Tyler Perry's shows? From the few I've watched as to better educate my vitriol for him, they're all the same retreaded jokes and gags.

Seriously, if you guys start pimping Perry, I will burn this mother down.

Posted by: Roaddog at December 2, 2009 8:33 PM

More "Modern Family" love from me!! Every single character is OSSOM.

And I'm on Team Brian for "Top Chef." I just want someone to give that Michael a smackdown, and it'll be more satisfying if it comes from his own brother. I wouldn't mind if Kevin won, either, but I think Jen's really lost her touch in the last few episodes.

Finally: I'm all about "SYTYCD"!!! Tonight, I hope Mollee gets the boot. I can't decide which guy I think deserves to go -- I kinda like 'em all right now. Nathan's probably ranked lowest for me, but I do think that Mollee's been dragging him down all season thus far.

I love you so much, Wednesday!!

Posted by: Jelinas at December 2, 2009 8:35 PM

I win with the girls SYTYCD elimination no matter what. Now there will be a clear differentiating factor between the final 4: hair color. I didn't even know there was a Kathryn on the show.

Posted by: Robert at December 2, 2009 8:37 PM

Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares season premiere is right now on BBC America. I'm watching it in HD. I can see every crevice and crag in Gordon's face. It's quite alarming.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at December 2, 2009 8:40 PM

Roaddog, I just list new episodes of any shows that might be of interest to Pajibans in any way. Also, if I left out the Tyler Perry shows, I worry that a particular individual might take it as proof of some kind of racial bias. Y'all know who I'm talking about.

Anyway, it gives me no joy to report on the Tyler Perry shows. Just like it gives me no joy to report that Leno is still on the air, or that "The Hills" is going strong. I'm not "pimping" him by any means, rest assured.

Posted by: Intern Rusty at December 2, 2009 8:41 PM

Robert: Ha! I'd actually forgotten about Kathryn, too.

I'm just hoping tonight is the end of Nathan. Dude looks and acts like he belongs with the Twilight posse.

Posted by: bonnie at December 2, 2009 8:42 PM

For the life of me, I cannot keep Kathryn & Noelle on SYTYCD straight. And now that they'll have different partners each week, I'm gonna be completely lost. I can only hope one of them will go tonight.

As for the guys, I was totally in love with Nathan at the start of the season. Actually, he blew me away when he auditioned for season 5, and I was happy to see him in this Top 20. But now... I'm all about Jakob. If he and Ellenore don't make it to the final 4, I'll eat my hat.*

*I don't actually wear a hat.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at December 2, 2009 8:48 PM

Saw Scrubs: Interns last night. New characters show some promise.

Nicky Whelan left me feeling tingly all over. Go ahead and google her images. Won't be dissapointed.

Posted by: Utah Dynamo at December 2, 2009 8:50 PM

I'm on team Kevin, with Jen a close second.

Posted by: Cindy at December 2, 2009 8:52 PM

OK., the Modern Family on at 8 (9 Eastern) is a rerun also. Fizbo, why hast thou forsaken me?

Posted by: Three-nineteen at December 2, 2009 9:23 PM

I am absolutely cracking up at the piano player in Glee right now. Dude rocks my world.

Posted by: Blonde Savant at December 2, 2009 9:26 PM

Also, the creepy horror-movie-esque Kay jewelry commercial with that guy who sort of looks like Jeff Goldblum never ceases to make me cringe in discomfort.

Posted by: Blonde Savant at December 2, 2009 9:32 PM

I hate that commercial. Every time it comes on, I want to punch that actor in the face.

Posted by: stardust at December 2, 2009 9:58 PM

That commercial made me choke on my apple.

"Jump" was hilariously awesome.

Posted by: Cindy at December 2, 2009 10:13 PM

Hey, Cindy with a C! Yeah, all of my free time lately has been devoured by Cannonball reading, and, more recently, lying on the beach and watching shooting stars with a Fella.
And Glee. Can't forget Glee.

Posted by: SaBrina at December 2, 2009 10:23 PM

I'm all about Jakob. If he and Ellenore don't make it to the final 4, I'll eat my hat.

I concur. They were flawless last night. If Russell doesn't make top 4 also, I will get the sads.

Posted by: Lauren at December 2, 2009 10:28 PM

I'm really liking The Middle. In my opinion, it's the breakout quality show that's been the most surprising (surprising).

Posted by: Three-nineteen at December 2, 2009 10:33 PM

Anyone else watching the Pixar shorts? If so, did you find that baby as utterly terrifying as I did? I do believe I am traumatized for life.

Posted by: Soothsayer at December 2, 2009 10:53 PM

OMG, Glee, I love you. Schu, you totally frightened me this evening. I was certain physical violence was going to happen...my hat is off to your abilities, Matthew Morrison. I guess they don't give those there Tonys to just anyone.

Also, if you are not watching Steven Seagal: Lawman, you should be. For reals...its like COPS met Dirty Jobs and had a trashy, trashy baby...EPIC.

Finally, for those of you going through design withdraw, Bravo's new attempt at re-creating the PR magic, Launch My Line, is premiering at 11pm. I am told it is less about the talent and more about the camp, so it should be grand fun for all involved.

Posted by: NotesOnMyBathroomMirror at December 2, 2009 10:55 PM

Drake - thank you for mentioning the Pixar Shorts! I would have missed it if I hadn't seen this. That was fun.

Better Off Ted is *hilarious* and I'm looking forward to its return. I bought the 1st Season DVDs yesterday. If you didn't watch it last season, give it a shot. Especially if you liked Andy Richter Controls the Universe. It has the same creator and the same kind of tone.

Posted by: Lainey at December 2, 2009 11:06 PM

I didn't even de-lurk for the lurkers' thread.

gee. Maybe I should re-evalute my life.

Posted by: cleverpeach at December 2, 2009 11:19 PM

I used to be such a hardcore fan of SYTYCD. But Beckyloo pretty much summed it up for me over here. These days, I watch it, and I occasionally tear up for something and lose my breath over a few routines, but nothing compares to how I felt about Sabra, or Joshua. I hate Mollee and her stupid perk all to hell, I hate Nathan and his waste of talent personality. Jakob, Russell and Ellenore must stay. And a little bit of Legacy, for the drama. The rest of them bore me to tears.

Posted by: Soda at December 3, 2009 1:38 AM

I think I held my breath during that entire scene on Glee tonight. Oh my word. I honestly never expected to feel like that while watching that show.

Our house will be having a Tivo battle next week as Scrubs, Better off Ted and SYTYCD are on at the same time. Oldest daughter is huge SYTYCD fan, and we had lots of tears when we goofed and didn't tape this Tuesday's ep.

She roots for Mollee as they have the same name, but we spell it properly with a Y.

We might have to watch Better Off Ted in REAL TIME! I'm not sure I can take it. Commercials? What are those?

Posted by: dammitjanet at December 3, 2009 9:00 AM

God, bonnie, you're totally right about Nathan looking like he belongs with those waxed-chest manlings from Twilight. Personally, it's the constant sulky face, the really forced crying from this week's show, and the apparent lack of brains that drive me nuts. Poor kid's a decent dancer and good looking, but way too immature compared to the rest of the them, and dumb as a rock.

POSSIBLE SPOILER Nathan's elimination was a fabulous early birthday gift to me. Thanks, voters! END SPOILER.

Robert--I can keep them straight because Kathryn has really nicely conditioned hair that I would kill to have. Noelle's got some weird pointy thing on her chin. Otherwise, I pretty much agree with Soda that this is an uninspiring season. Jakob and Ellenore had the first performance that really got me fired up.

I've been catching a bit of Glee after SYTYCD and the show is starting to grow on me. NotesOnMyBathroomMirror, holy hell, I was terrified by Schu's reaction too (and a wee bit turned on, but that's my problem). But that lady coach? She was funny in the scenes I had caught before. Now she's just a hateful bitch. And not in a fun way. Ugly people should stay out of her sight? Hon, have you looked in a mirror? You're not beauty pageant material yourself. I hope they tone her nastiness down, because it's stopped being fun to watch.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 3, 2009 9:04 AM

The issue for me isn't that I can't keep Kathryn and Noelle apart. I honestly did not remember there was a Kathryn on the show. Then when she was standing next to Noelle for the elimination, I started wondering if they just shoved her on stage for the first time. I know who Noelle is since she should have been eliminated for not dancing the first week, just like Billy Bell. The pointy-chin and Khloe Kardashian-esque proportions make that clearly memorable in my mind. Now that each girl is clearly different - blonde, brunette, face-pulling ballroom, and awesome - I'm good to go.

Posted by: Robert at December 3, 2009 9:24 AM

And don't get me started on those Kay jewelry commercials. Honest to Godtopus, they seem like SNL parodies. The dude dating the deaf chick--he hasn't been dating her long enough (or doesn't care enough) to do more than clumsily sign "I love you", but here's some inappropriately expensive shiny jewelry that makes our total lack of communication OK?

And fucking hell, the one with the thunderstorm? Rarely has a commercial so disgusted and enraged me. Oh, protect me, strong man, from the scary light and boom-booms! Never let me go! Who talks like that? Who doesn't cringe when they hear someone talk like that? Makes me want to drop kick her through that giant window and watch her bounce off the ground. ATTENTION MARKETING EXECUTIVES--This is the 21st fucking century. In fucking AMERICA. Unless they've got a phobia, women here do not bury their faces in a man's chest because of a little thunder. They don't cower and beg him to keep them safe from bad weather because they are so timid and desperate to appeal to the man's ego. Don't get me wrong--we appreciate strong men, men who could and would take care of us if we needed it--but we are not spineless, brainless Stepford Wives from the fucking 50s who just need a little jewelry to get us in the mood. Goddamnit. Goddamnit, I hate your commercials. Twilight's not doing enough damage to feminism right now? Pull your heads out of your chauvinistic wrinkled old asses, you fuckers.

I will never buy or accept as a gift your crappy Kay jewelry. Any guy who really knows me will get me a snowplow attachment for my John Deere.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 3, 2009 9:39 AM

SUGGESTION BOX ITEM:
Please include a symbol or note if the show is a re-run. That would be extremely helpful in deciding what to watch or if shows are competing for time.

Posted by: BAM at December 3, 2009 10:07 AM

My 13-y.o. saw that Kay commercial during Glee last night, and went off into a budding-feminist rant. It was so cool. The girl loves her shiny stuff, but that just sickened her. She did love the other diamond commercial that came on...the "you're not that guy" tagline, and so did I.

It's too bad there wasn't much singing on Glee last night. Just the one big number, really. But I guess with one bomb dropped, they had to do a little more dialogue.

I'm firmly rooting for Kevin to smack down both Voltaggio brothers on Top Chef. I wouldn't be heartbroken if Brian took it, but Michael's been such a jerk and hasn't quite lived up to his self-perception. Totally agree on the Hosea-hate, BTW. That was the stupidly-bad ending to a stupidly-bad season.

Yes, Soothsayer, the baby (in, I'm assuming, Tin Toy) is terrifying. Fortunately they are seldom as scary in real life.

Glad you and others enjoyed the shorts. I wouldn't have known about them without a newspaper item by our local TV critic. I didn't like the commercial cuts at all, and had more than my share of Mater, but all-in-all enjoyed it.
