Ominous, Isn't It?

The best thing to watch tonight isn’t on TV and is best viewed if you live in either North or Central America. I am speaking, of course, of the first full lunar eclipse on the night of the Winter Solstice since 1638. For me (and probably most of you) this is just a cool astrological event to watch, but I’m sure it’s an extra super big deal for the pagans though I’m not sure how they celebrate. Orgies? Virgin sacrifices? Someone let me know so I can send the appropriate e-card. I’m already making plans that involve hot chocolate, a campfire, those little hand warmer packets and as many pairs of socks as I can fit into my boots. Unfortunately, the eclipse isn’t scheduled to start until the wee hours of the morning though, so you’ll still have to suffer though tonight’s prime time schedule before heading out to watch. Here’s what you can kill time with:

8:00pm: “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS

“Million Dollar Money Drop” on Fox. Two hour series premiere. I’m not gonna lie, I do find the concept of this show intriguing but I’m still convinced it’s going to be a giant pile of suck. Because it’s on Fox.

“The Sing-Off” on NBC. Second season finale.

“Skating With the Stars” on ABC

8:30pm: “Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings” on ESPN. Due to snowfall collapsing the Metrodome’s roof, the game will be played in the outdoor stadium at the University of Minnesota. Brrrrrr.

9:00pm: “American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior” on Discovery

“American Pickers” on History

“The Best Thing I Ever Ate” on Food Network

“The Closer” on TNT

“Independent Lens: The Calling” on PBS

“Intervention” on A&E

“My Big Friggin Wedding” on VH1

“The Next Great Baker” on TLC

“WWE: RAW” on USA

10:00pm: “Fabulous Cakes: San Francisco” on TLC

“Hoarders” on A&E

“Howe and Howe Tech” on Discovery

“Mario Lopez: Saved By the Baby” on VH1

“Men of a Certain Age” on TNT

“Perfect Couples” on NBC. Special presentation.

“Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” on Bravo

“True Life” on MTV. Tonight’s theme is “I’m an Albino”, which means that Skitz might firebomb MTV and save the rest of us the trouble.

10:30pm: “Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It” on VH1. First season finale.

Late Night Listings

“The Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS featuring Jack Black and Marv Albert

“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on NBC featuring Larry King, Garrett Hedlund, and Pink Martini

“The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on CBS featuring Kristin Davis and Dick Cavett

“Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on NBC featuring Jason Segel and Hailee Steinfeld

“Chelsea Lately” on E featuring Diddy-Dirty Money, Brad Wollack, Whitney Cummings, and Kevin Hart

“Conan” on TBS featuring Aaron Eckhart, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Beach House

I think I'll just go to bed early tonight. Work off this sugar crash after downing a can of Orange Crush. Mmm.

Don't you live in Miami or somewhere equally hellish? How cold does it get at night, 50?

First lunar eclipse during winter solstice in hundreds of years -- and the view in Southern California is completely blocked out by rain (going on 5 days straight). I haven't seen the sun, let alone moon, since Thursday, no way am I gonna get to see this once every three centuries event. Fuckity fuck fuck.

On the other hand, I DID notice an old guy walking down the street w/ a pair of different kind of animals behind them a few days ago, I guess that isn't something you see everyday either.

Are you secretly Major Major Major Major?

The_wakeful, normally I'm in Miami but right now I'm in Maryland for the holidays. Still not hideously cold but it is below freezing.

Well in that case, I'll allow it. Carry on.

Well Yosarian was taken and Irving Washington was his alter ego so...

Stayed up to see the eclipse, it really was pretty extraordinary in our area. Now I can go to bed in peace knowing that I've done the bidding of the Supreme High Overlords of Yahoo Newsfeed,

I stepped outside the workplace to see it. Beautiful, sort of a russet film over the Moon, like a gel filter over a light.

Of course, this won't stop me from telling the Credulous among us that it's a gigantic invisible sky dragon.

My sister is always calling me to tell me about this meteor show or that lunar eclipse, and it always takes place at some ungodly hour in winter, when my interest in getting out of my warm bed to see such things is at an all-time low. Doesn't help that my house is completely buried by trees and I can't see squat anyhow. I don't care if it hasn't happened in centuries; it's cold, I'm tired, I'll catch it next time.
