Well, I’m back home for the holidays and have already been greeted by the family pets who have done their best to make sure I don’t spend any moment of the next two and a half weeks without some kind of fur adorning my clothing. So far I’ve noticed that it’s much much colder than Miami, and it’s getting dark a lot earlier, which I don’t like. But, I’m glad to be back here to take a bit of a breather before next semester and not have to worry about my finances for at least a little bit. At the moment though, I’m exhausted from a night where I barely slept thanks to a party and thinking about what I still had to do before my flight and getting up early to do all those things, so I’m just gonna cut to the chase and let you know what this Wednesday night holds for you (hint: Not “Glee”):

8:00 p.m.: “The New Adventures of Old Christine” on CBS.

“Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Featuring Brian Stokes Mitchell and Edward Hermann” on PBS.

“The Sing Off” on NBC.

“So You Think You Can Dance” on FOX, two-hour season 6 finale.

8:30 p.m.: “Gary Unmarried” on CBS.

9:00 p.m.: “Criminal Minds” on CBS.

“Friday Night Lights” on DirecTV.

“Mythbusters” on Discovery.

“Top Chef: Watch What Happens” on Bravo. I think this is the show where they deliberately try to start shit by poking all the sore points from the season. I remain confident that most of this season’s contestants are too mature for that, although Robin, Eli, and Mike I probably aren’t.

10:00 p.m.: “Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura” on TruTV. TruTV used to be Court TV right? I’d like to see more networks change their name to reflect the increasing stupidity of their programming. For example, VH1 could just be called “Dumb Spoiled Brats Network” or TLC could be “The Medical Freaks Channel”. You get the idea.

“CSI:NY” on CBS.

“Eastwick” on ABC.

“The Jay Leno Show” on NBC.

“Nip/Tuck” on FX, sixth season finale.

“The Real World/Road Rules Challenge” on MTV, one hour reunion special.

“Spectacle” on Sundance.

“Steven Seagal: Lawman” on A&E.

10:30 p.m.: “Steven Seagal: Lawman” on A&E.

So as much as I complained about this season on last night's thread, I'm still watching 'So You Think Can Dance' tonight, with only 30 minute delay!

Also Lythgoe was on Kimmell last night and he's actually a funny guy. Not as creepy as he usually is, lol.

Posted by: kilmo at December 16, 2009 7:06 PM

Thank you for alerting me that there is a whole hour of Steven Seagal on tonight. Glorious.

Tonight I watched The Opposite of Sex. Pretty good movie. Got lots of gay in it so most of you will like it. And weird relationships, and an obnoxious 16 year old girl. Worth checking out. Sweet litle movie.

Sigh. My ponies never win the famewhoring races. Maxx Factor was one of three acts to get a standing ovation in the first hour of The Sing Off and were unceremoniously booted for a great performance. Then Ellenore was forced to play pageant runner up, plaster on an unmoving smile, and pretend to believe the experience of SYTYCD was winning instead of beating the crap out of Nigel for throwing her under the bus last night. And now it seems like one of the crazies is going home on Launch My Line.

Anyone want to see what a more successful famewhore from my hometown is like? Turn on Ghost Adventures Academy tonight for the finale. Jane Riley, the troublemaker, was a few years ahead of me in school. We did a lot of shows together and she was always determined to not take the blame for any mistake she made. It's been simultaneously satisfying and horrifying to see her taken to task three weeks in a row for being so two-faced and manipulative.

She came in fourth place, I think that's pretty good. Not pleased with Russell, dude didn't even hug or be humble to Jakob.

Gah! And then he brought KEVIN on stage. I hate Kevin, him with his smug ass face.

I was loving that he'd hurt himself and so cute and sad about it. It was just severe unsportsmanlike conduct that I did not expect that from him.

Posted by: kilmo at December 16, 2009 10:49 PM

I agree, kilmo, ripping your shirt off and shouting "It is DONE!" (WTF?) is a bizarre reaction to winning, as was ignoring Jakob and yanking Kevin on stage instead. I was hoping for Jakob to win--I just think he's the better dancer and I enjoy watching him a lot more--but since Russell was also excellent I didn't expect to feel disappointed. Then he acted like such an ass (even Cat seemed annoyed by him) that I WAS disappointed.

Nigel has always seemed like a funny guy to me, but he keeps negating it with the creepy lecherous old man thing. And they definitely need to go back to having a guest judge on the panel--when they brought everyone back for the finale I felt like they didn't belong. Plus I love hearing Lil'C make an ass out of himself using big words he doesn't understand in combinations that make no sense. He's the Sarah Palin of the dance world.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 17, 2009 7:54 AM

Okay. Here's what I don't understand about DeadBessie's and kilmo's comments about Russell:

The kid grew up in a rough neighborhood that chews up and buries kids like him every day. He finds an outlet in the hyperagressive and expressive krumping dance style. He works at it, and works at it, and works at it because he loves it. There is no way this is taking him anywhere, right? Then he hears about SYTYCD and can't wait to tryout, just to be onstage and show the world his love. Somehow he makes it to Vegas, where his is humble, respectful and grateful. Then miraculously he makes the top 20, where he is humble, respectful and grateful. He is nearly eliminated by the incompetent judges on the first show. Despite what could have been considered a slap in the face, he remained humble, appreciative, joyful, unselfish, and grateful. He improves in ways I'll bet he never imagined and discovers a new world through dance. He is soaking it all in because he is sure this is the only prize he can possibly hope to take away from this competition. No way he wins as a krumper! Lo and behold, he's in the finale. Because his physical abilities are so ridiculous, he is asked to re-perform a routine in which he leaps down two stories while basically running at full speed. He injures himself, eliminating his chance to perform again that night (and I think he was apologizing to Noelle when they first brought him out since they wouldn't be able to perform the Frog Dance). He is in a lot of pain but puts on a good face. Cat is basically taunting him for being injured (very low class on her part and disappointing), but he remains humble, respectful and grateful. Then the unthinkable happens: He wins. He IMMEDIATELY turns and hugs Jakob, then walks forward to share it with the audience, spouting jibberish and gutteral noises in his unbridled joy. This is the moment that will change his life forever. Kevin has been his mentor during the entire process (both come from underprivileged backgrounds and Kevin is well-travelled, experienced, and an older brother figure there to guide Russell through the confusing whirlwind of a dance competition) and Russell wants him to know that he appreciates everything Kevin has done for him. The first chance he gets to speak, he expresses his undying love for dance (loved the joke about coming out of womb like "aaahhhh!") and thanks America, his parents, his girlfriend, and his little brother. He even thanked the judges for their criticisms, saying they made him a better man! And he FUCKING MEANT IT!!!!!!!!!!

Now. Please explain which part of this turned you off because I am pissed off that people would take this the wrong way. You didn't like it because he didn't stifle his happiness during the greatest moment of his life??? Really????? Well, I have three words for you haters: Wet. Fucking. Blankets.

Balls out!

Posted by: Kballs at December 17, 2009 8:43 AM

Good morning Kballs,

I'm gonna have to watch the episode again, cause I didn't see what you saw, obvs.

In 5 seasons (+ 2 Canadian version) of SYTYCD, no one has ever celebrated a win like that before. It's was a little disconcerting. I actually really like Russell, maybe my enthusiasm was tempered by Kevin being brought on stage. He really bothers me along with his stupid hair, cut it!!!

Also, I don't think Cat was trying to taunt the kid. She was just trying to make the best out a bad situation. I thought the stool comment was pretty hilars.

ps.
thanks for throwing 3 words at me "Wet. Fucking. Blanket(s)", that just made my morning.

Posted by: kilmo at December 17, 2009 10:46 AM

*shakes fist at kilmo*

Damn you!

Nah, just kidding. I didn't like Kevin either, but I don't hold that against Russell. And his celebration should be different. The only people who've won have been contemporary and ballroom dancers, people trained to control their emotions and movements as much as possible. His unbridled enthusiasm touched me deep down in a my-daughter-gently-touched-my-cheek-and-said-I-love-you kind of way, and I chided you for not seeing it like that. I stand by my chiding, but calling you and DeadBessie Wet Fucking Blankets was a little harsh. I'll amend it to Party Poopers.

Posted by: Kballs at December 17, 2009 11:01 AM

Holy hell, KBalls, did you go off your meds? You shouldn't do that without asking your doctor first, you know. No one's hating here. I just thought taking off his shirt and yelling "It is done!" was weird. It came off sounding like he thought he had single-handedly wiped out poverty and improved race relations by winning a dance competition. It didn't seem to match up with the humble personality he had shown up to that point. I'm not saying he didn't have a shitty childhood, didn't have to fight hard to get where he is now, or even that he didn't deserve to win. I just found some of his reactions baffling. Other than that, I was happy for him and his parents.

The problem with reading someone's opinion as opposed to hearing and watching them say it is that it sometimes gets taken the wrong way. I reread my comment and didn't see the hate, but maybe that's because I wrote it. I was just a little bummed for Jakob. I read your comment, however, and I get plenty of hate and rage. Talk about a wet blanket. You reading hatred into a comment in which none was expressed says more about you than the person doing the commenting.

Four words for you: Chill. The. Fuck. Out. Your guy won; be happy.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 17, 2009 11:12 AM

DeadBessie,

Yes. I am off my meds. The hacked up mime in my trunk would tell you the same, but he just keeps hand gesturing with nine fingers, then one and one. What an idiot!

"Hatred" is an awfully strong word, there. Annoyed? Yes. Diappointed? Absolutely. Looking to throw some intensity around this little box? You bet. It comes from not seeing any of my favorites come through on reality shows, then one finally does and I see him called an "ass" and unfairly called out for not hugging Jakob (he did), being humble (which he was all season and was again when given the chance to speak about winning), or unsportsmanlike (which is crazy because people are supposed to be excited when they win $250K and America's love). I went on a rant because I wanted you to see what I saw in Russell and understand my intense reaction and opinion as I was giving it. You know I love our talks about SYTYCD and I think I need a hug.

*holds arms out*

Posted by: Kballs at December 17, 2009 11:26 AM

Well, you used the word "hater" which I reacted strongly to, but I also used the word "ass" in referring to Russell which I didn't really mean anything by. Aside from Joshua, no one else has won that I rooted for, so I can certainly understand your excitement and passion.

*hugs*

*cops a feel*

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 17, 2009 11:43 AM

WHOA! I should apologize more often.

So, DB, how YOU doin'?

Posted by: Kballs at December 17, 2009 11:55 AM

Mimes are creepy so do what you must Kballs.

Alright, I can see your point about the other winners and that's like totally true. Except, no ballroom dancer has won, it's only been contemporary and hip hop.

Robert,
from the other thread: the couple for the top 20 aren't random. They're picked by Nigel and company for esthetics and height etc. The only bad pairing I can remember is from season 2 where this short kid and a gigantres were paired together. They were gone first week.

The dances are picked at random however, which is why some couples go 3 weeks with a ballroom routine.

Posted by: kilmo at December 17, 2009 12:07 PM

I loved Joshua!!
That top 4/season 4 was the culmjnation for me!! After that with school and such, it was too much for me to get sooo invested/ I didn't even watch the tryouts this year.

Especially after the kicked off Ryan Kasperak, Evan's big bro (top 4 last year). So ludacris!!!

Posted by: kilmo at December 17, 2009 12:17 PM

kilmo,
Remember Benji's stupid ass? He's the only ballroom dancer to win. Also, I thought Joshua was a contemporary dancer, not hip-hop. Wikipedia would've been useful about 2 hours ago.

Posted by: Kballs at December 17, 2009 12:19 PM

hahaha, yeah I remember Benji...

I guess West Coast Swing is ballroom. He's actually a really good choreographer, not as awesome as Travis, but still. He did a piece on the Canadian version (s1) that was about his broken heart.

Joshua came on as a hip hopper. They also kept mentioning his lack of "other" experience and then they showed a picture of him in ballet tights. He was just awesome all around along with Katie.
When they kicked off Katie's roommate (red hair, I tried googling her name, but I'm at the internship) I was so angry!!!!

I hope they give Jakob some money as well, 'cause usually they give like $100G to the runner up and sometimes to the girl. Every year they do something different.

Posted by: kilmo at December 17, 2009 12:36 PM

Oh sure, when I put out, THEN I get your attention, KBalls. Don't toy with me, I know you're already taken. *sniffles*

kilmo I too thought the top 20 couples picked each other at random in addition to the dance styles. It makes sense that they wouldn't be; otherwise a lot of awkward pairings might result and some really good dancers wouldn't get a fair chance.

Benji choreographed a really fun swing number a season or two back which I enjoyed. I wish they could devote a little time to seeing what former winners are doing now. Don't they usually get some kind of dance contract for a year in addition to the money? Occasionally you see former contestants in the audience, and they spent some time hyping the Fame movie with Kherington, but otherwise they seem to just disappear. I'd like to see what Joshua was up to.

I actually thought Ryan Kaspersak (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong) deserved to be cut this season. I don't get what happened to the guy; he was so close to making top 20 last year, he gave a great audition this season, and then when he did hip hop and ballroom he totally stunk. I was sooo bummed out by that.

I do NOT get what happened with Katie's roommate (Natalie? I'm gonna go with Natalie) last season. The judges raved about her, they showed her and Brandon in rehearsal doing a Sonya routine, which they KILLED, and then she was a little off during the actual audition. A little off. And they gave her no slack, just cut her instantly and acted like she had bombed so bad that she could never be redeemed. Yet they gave Tony (I think? Too many names at this point), the hip-hopper with the briefcase routine, multiple shots despite him sucking again and again. Natalie deserved a second chance way more than that guy did.

I remember they gave Katie some runner-up money but I've never seem them do it before or since. Consistency is not this show's strong point. In any case, it's some consolation to me that the top 10 will be touring, and you know a lot of those dancers will go on to great careers because of the exposure they got on the show, as well as the experience.

Damn, I'm chatty today. Apologies for my long-winded-ness; work is slow.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 17, 2009 1:04 PM

Natalie! Thank you deadbessie. She was amazing and then nada poof gone. I thought that was pretty "cruel" of them considering season 4 they pulled the "best friends/roommmates, only 1 makes it for the final spot."

The winner did get a dance contract, but they realized sometimes it wouldn't work, ala Benji won a CELINE DION contract for Vegas, which he rightfully turned down.

In regards to the past dancers, they did do a retrospective, I think last season and I was so mad that all Allison did was have a baby. She was voted off Top 8, s2 and she did the marvellous farewell dance using Travis as a prop.

Where did the farewell dance go???

Also, Lopez had some past girl dancers as her backup! It was one of the few musical performances that actually made sense. Mary J. Blige, seriously... seriously. When they have musical guests I wanna see the back up dancers be from past season, I think that would be really cute.

Posted by: kilmo at December 17, 2009 1:28 PM

To clarify: I'm happy Russell won. I wanted him or Ellenore for quite a while.

Meanwhile, my brother has blocked Pajiba, with a password, from all of the home computers. He really dislikes the site. He says it's a bad influence and makes me want to watch films he's never heard of. Cellphone access just isn't the same.

Posted by: Robert at December 17, 2009 1:50 PM

I'm not a fan of Lopez so I left the room when she came on, only to come back in and hear her say she was using past contestants as backup dancers. So I missed it, but I've got it taped so I'll be watching tonight.

Celine Dion? Damn. Good call for passing that one up, Benji.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 17, 2009 1:53 PM

Robert--your brother is an ass. But then, you probably already know that.

Over Christmas break I will either have to access Pajiba through dial-up (oh so painful), or go to my mom's to use her DSL connection (perhaps just as painful). So I understand your pain.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 17, 2009 2:01 PM

I just realized that my mom is more technologically advanced than me. She's 73. Kill me now.

Posted by: DeadBessie at December 17, 2009 2:04 PM

Bessie,
I'd be watching it again tonight as well, except I gotta watch the Olympic torch come down Yonge Street for national unity or something.

I'm using it as a total exuse to get some Second Cup hot chocolate, Starbucks can suck it!

You will find Lopez absolutly hilarious.

Robert - that's not cool about the passwords, but a little hilars at the same time. I heart my iphone, but my eyes are burning.
