… I Miss Padma.

I’m not sure how all the rest of the Pajiba student community are doing vis a vis finals, but I’m down to my last 24 hours. By this time tomorrow it will all be over for me. Between now and then, though, I do have to take a final that I’m not too stressed about, but which I should take some time to review for, and I have two papers to hand in. These include a synopsis and an academic review of a book that, in a stunning feat of entirely uncoordinated coincidence, I have already reviewed for Cannonball 1, and that review is actually mentioned today in Nicole’s “Top Ten Cannonball Read Reviews of 2009.” Now, some of you out there might be saying “Wait, if she read the book earlier this fall, why didn’t she just do the synopsis and academic review then?” and to you I say shut up, you sound like my mother. Seriously though, it was a huge oversight on my part that I can chalk up mostly to hubris, but I’m getting through the work at a reasonable pace now. I may even send my professor the link to the review which went up on Pajiba, but I’m not 100% sure I’m going to yet. For those of you who aren’t racing to meet deadlines, here’s what you can enjoy on TV tonight:

8:00 p.m.: “Jennifer Hudson: I’ll be Home for Christmas” on ABC.

“How I Met Your Mother” on CBS.

“Little People, Big World” on TLC.

“The Sing-Off” on NBC, series premiere.

8:30 p.m.: “Accidentally on Purpose” on CBS.

“Monday Night Football: Arizona Cardinals at San Fransisco 49ers” on ESPN.

9:00 p.m.: “Cake Boss” on TLC.

“The Closer” on TNT.

“Find My Family” on ABC.

“Intervention” on A&E.

“Anatomy of a Pandemic” on PBS, which your grandmother will watch and then call you around 10 p.m. to talk about whether or not you got your H1N1 vaccine.

“Two and a Half Men” on CBS.

“Lie to Me” on FOX, 2nd season Fall finale.

9:30 p.m.: “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS, which I almost always type the first time as “The Big Back Theory” and then spend a few minutes wondering what, exactly, a big back theory might be. Would it be related to Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back”? I think so, but it’s not my theory so I don’t know for sure. It’s sort of a theoretical theory.

10:00 p.m.: “Chef Academy” on BRAVO, because there aren’t enough competitive cooking shows that don’t measure up to “Top Chef” on television already.

“CSI: Miami” on CBS.

“Hoarders” on A&E.

“The Jay Leno Show” on NBC.

“Men of a Certain Age” on TNT.

I miss finals. Even in law school, finals period was one of my favorite times of the year. Sure, it could be stressful and a lot of work, but you always had that sweet, long Winter break to look forward to.

Now? I have more work and stress than I ever had at finals and, while I hopefully get a week off, I will still likely have to keep track of things.

After re-reading this post, I realize that it is not remotely interesting or pertinent to anyone's life. Don't feel like you have to read it. I'm just bored and pissed off.

Oh finals...I had 2 take-home exams and a final research paper. I have one actual exam left. Sounds awesome, right? Let me lay out the schedule:

Thursday:
9am-4pm: Take-Home Exam 1. 15 pages on 6 novels.
10pm-3am: Take-Home Exam 2. 10 pages on neolithic societies.
Friday:
10am-4pm: Finishing Research Paper. 12 pages on the impeachment of Andrew Jackson.
December 21 (aka NEXT MONDAY): Final.

Fuck scheduling. Sorry for the rant. Excited for How I Met Your Mother!

I have one more final to take. I'm bitter because I have to go to San Francisco to take it (3 hour public transportation trip).

But it doesn't help that I'm grumpy because I'm turning 30 this weekend, and I think my family is trying to throw me a party. However, I already made plans to spend the day at a spa getting pampered and drunk. I told them months ago about my plans, and now they want me to spend the time with them, arg! Maybe I can tell them I got H1N1...

I'm watching The Sing-Off (what? I heard Ben Folds is a judge. Ben Folds!).

Why does Nick Lachey always get to host these singing competitions? You can't tell me there aren't any other unemployed former boy band members out there. I'm pretty sure most of LFO could use a steady paycheck these days.

I'm only here, in this t.v. related thread, to say that I need me a Dexter recap asap.

I just watched the season finale and got so worked up I threw up on myself a little bit. Now I wanna talk about it.

I got finals (mechanical engineering crap) the next 3 days, along with a sick African Grey Parrot. She is going through menopause and her hormones are all messed up.So I get to shove medicine down her throat every four hours until I can get her blood work to stabilize. Add in the fact that I rescued her 18 years ago from owners that abused her to the point she ripped out all her feathers and was never socialized so she is basically an autistic 3 year old with a can opener for a face, she doesn't like to be touched unless she initiates it. I got bags under my eyes and bandages covering my hands.

I love when family members ask my 28 year old ass when I am going to get married and have a kid. I already got one.

Yes I'm joining in on the ranting...I have a paper due in 12 hours (it's very late here in Europe) and I know I'm not getting any sleep cause I keep writing complete shit. What I wouldn't give for a regular exam that you can cram for. None of this 'independent thought' crap. You know when you get to the point that you hate everything about the topic you're writing about but you know you don't have time to come up with anything else.
Ok 2000 words to go! Easy peasy, right?!

Also, I cannot wait for Friday...this weekend will be spent in a glorious drunken stupor celebrating how I survived these finals whilst killing all the braincells that got me through it.

I smell a Comment Diversion...Post Finals Parties anyone? ;)

Posted by: Mona at December 14, 2009 9:16 PM

Mona, I already plan on spending tomorrow night at an 80's prom themed party getting positively trashed before climbing on a plane at noon on Wednesday to fly home. I'm also trying to squeeze in some beach time if possible. Woo!

Easy peasy, lemon squeez-- FUCK LEMON JUICE IN MY EYE FUCK FINALS.....done Thursday. Oh so close.

I had my last final today! It was a beautiful snowy day in Oslo, which ended in much celebration and many snowball fights. What is it about snow that turns us back into children?

I'm really enjoying Chef's Academy. The whole concept of mentorship and schooling of the contestants before each competition is more appealing than the Top Chef douche/bimbo approach.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 14, 2009 9:39 PM

Rusty, that sounds glorious, please take me with you...I bet this paper would write itself like a dream if I were just a teensy bit drunk right now. Why is it your cupboards are always empty during finals? Also, I should stop rereading what I wrote..cause it's making me have mini-mental breakdowns.

Posted by: Mona at December 14, 2009 9:40 PM

Joining in on the finals bitching. If I want even a B for my astronomy class, I have to ace the final at 7:30am tomorrow. I happened to fail one of the four exams in that class because I had forgotten about it. But seriously, what kind of evil prof schedules an exam the first class back from thanksgiving break!? That's just wrong.
My other two finals are cake though, thankfully. Then my winter break starts on Thursday! Whoo!

Was anyone else underwhelmed with the How I Met Your Mother episode tonight? Maybe its just cause I'm anticipating the musical episode too much...That has to air soon right?

Nick Lachey sucks Slim's rancid unwashed balls.

It's too bad that there's such sucktitude in The Sing-Off - I love the 90 second performances each group is doing.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at December 14, 2009 9:52 PM

I read that as "The Big Black Theory." Draw your own conclusions.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at December 14, 2009 10:05 PM

It sucks that Nick Lachey is hosting The Sing-Off (and that one of the Pussy Cat Dolls is a judge), because it was actually pretty entertaining, and Ben Folds is awesome. Also, one of my best friends is in the group from Tufts (the Bubs) and it's just cool to watch him on TV...

Just finished finals today - turned in a truly awful take home this afternoon and it feels great. I survived my first semester of grad school!

I'm annoyed though because one of my profs posted our grades already! Finals aren't even over until tonmorrow! We JUST turned in our 15-20 page papers (with 3 - 5 pages of critique) on Thursday! There's 40 people in the class! I really feel like all the work I did wasn't even looked at. Is it just me or is that just wrong?

Posted by: Monica at December 14, 2009 10:24 PM

top chef douche/bimbo approach just doesnt ring authentic/natural

the safety word is "banana"

who dat'!?!

Posted by: furtherbeyond at December 14, 2009 10:46 PM

I have a theory that Finals Month is the real "War on Christmas".

Right now, (not this very minute because I'm obviously on Pajiba and not getting actual work done), I've got one last ten page paper on ancient Indian poetics and then on Dec. 23 a NORMAL final (as in an actual test, cramming and all). The worst is already over but the fact that it even still exists sucks dolphin balls.

Posted by: momofucku at December 14, 2009 10:47 PM

chefs academia plus authentic swedish expression - of course i ve gotten to the point where my cooking show experience most nights restricted to alton brown or the blonde swedish chick on PBS - ooh, now there is a tandem

Posted by: furtherbeyond at December 14, 2009 11:07 PM

no house and no castle, boo

Posted by: arrrghzi at December 14, 2009 11:32 PM

No Castle! Uh-oh

*withers from Nathan Fillion deprivation*

You finals peons can enjoy your week of hell. I'm in the middle of my six month, final masters project that is unrelenting in the amount of guilt it thrusts upon me on a weekly basis. I'm accountable to a real organization for this one, not just some professor that I've managed to bullshit with my "work". God I can't wait for this whole nightmare to be over. I swear I will never set foot in a classroom ever again. But don't hold me to that after a couple of years go by, ok?

Meanwhile, I will be getting a full eight hours of sleep tonight, minus the middle of the night baby feedings.

Man, when I think of finals all I remember is late night study sessions at Denny's, bottomless cups of coffee, and lots and lots of cigarettes. I remember the act of studying more than the tests themselves. So take heart my young Pajibans, soon the pain will be behind you and you'll be forced to leave the warm, loving embrace of academia and enter the cold cruel working world where every day is like a never ending final.

Sorry, that may have been a bit pessimistic. I think I'm low on caffeine.

Posted by: TylerDFC at December 15, 2009 7:10 AM

That's weird. I had my final BM of the day late yesterday. If you looked in my toilet earlier in the day, you'd see the work I'd put in on another project. However, I ate leftover chili for lunch, to which you're probably wondering at me, "Why didn't you go again right after that?" And to that I say shut up, you sound like my colon. Actually, I chalk it up to hubris in thinking that I could keep the delicious chili inside me forever. Maybe I should send a picture link to my medulla oblongata proving all the work I put in previously, but I'm not 100% sure yet because I think it's impossible (The Lawnmower Man's promised future notwithstanding). For anyone else not running to the potty, here's a picture of me winking conspiratorially:
;)

SING-OFF was great. Songs were good and bad, but the energy and joy shown by some of those groups up there was contagious. Its fun to get excited about singing when other people are so excited about it.

Nick Lachey was boring. Laura Scherzinger (sp?) was a joke (aka the next Paula Abdul). Is it really hard to find a thoughtful, eloquent, musically-inclined female celebrity? Seriously?

Ben Folds and the B2M guy were great though.

Diablo, good on you for taking such good care of your African Grey.
