Take a Look! Then Pick Up a Book! Tuesday Night TV!

Pajiba After Dark / Intern Rusty

Miscellaneous | November 3, 2009 | Comments (27)

It’s Tuesday, which means that there’s not really a lot of interesting things on television tonight (except “Sons of Anarchy”, which I will mention specifically so the fans don’t get all “‘Sons of Anarchy’ is the best show on television, you moron!” on me) so if you’re participating in the Cannonball Read: This Time It’s Personal, or even if you’re not, I invite you to take tonight as a chance to turn off your TV and pick up a book. Please? Your brain will like you for it! Well, if you insist on getting your entertainment from the TV, here’s what you can expect:

8:00 p.m.: “90210” on The CW.

“The Biggest Loser” on NBC.

“NCIS” on CBS.

“So You Think You Can Dance” on FOX, since baseball is taking the night off, but will be back.

“V” on ABC, which I may watch because I’m curious. I don’t have high hopes for it though.

9:00 p.m.: “Dancing With The Stars” on ABC.

“Dirty Jobs” on Discovery; this week it’s “Tofu Maker.”

“Melrose Place” on The CW.

“NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS.

10:00 p.m.: “The Forgotten” on ABC.

“The Good Wife” on CBS.

“The Jay Leno Show” on NBC.

“Sons of Anarchy” on FX.

Intern Rusty is a Masters student at the University of Miami. You can learn more about her at Rusty’s Ventures. Be nice to her, she gave blood today.

I will be picking up several books for my Reformation class, and as a "reward" I will watch poll results and weep over Creigh Deeds losing to a horrible candidate through no fault but his own.

Nice title! Especially considering the whole rainbow sodomy discussion held earlier. Intentional?

Not that I'll be watching and cackling my head off at the delicious celebrity gossip, hyperbole, and cursing elderly mother impersonations, but I would feel bad if I did not mention the premiere of the new Kathy Griffin stand up special at 9 on Bravo, Balls of Steel.

Yes, some straight guys like her comedy. Then again, some straight guys were raised in theater, so the connection isn't that shocking.

Tabatha's Salon Takeover is back at 10 on Bravo, and I know there have to be people around these parts who love her unapologetically bitchy attitude. Aside from introducing a broader audience to FIGJAM during her all too brief tenure on the inaugural season of Shear Genius, this DList certified hot slut eats idiots for breakfast and spits out their bones to use as curlers and straight combs on clients. Bitch could make Gordon Ramsey cry.

Those of us who work nights want to know if V is worth downloading tomorrow after we get home. Anyone liveblogging?

Posted by: idiosynchronic at November 3, 2009 8:20 PM

I'm 30 minutes into V and I'm already bored. You know what doesn't help? Realizing that I had mistaken Scott Wolf for Jamie Bamber when I saw the previews. How long has BSG been off the air?

I'm going to go get drunk and watch Firefly.

I do love Sons of Anarchy. BUT, they've got to step up the quality of the dialogue. How many times are they going to say "Shit" and "Jesus Christ" in the same-type situations? That stuff doesn't offend me in the least, religion-wise. It's just lazy writing.

V: Decently acted and badly, badly written is a combo made for Pajiba Recappin'.

Speakin' of which, will the Dexter recap be up tomorrow? I live for those. No, truthfully, I'm refraining from suicide solely in order to read those recaps.

Back to V: How badly do we already want Teenage Son to die horribly? I would gladly give up a Klondike Bar to see him die horribly. You?

Posted by: Jerce at November 3, 2009 10:58 PM

"V" is little more than an allegory for Rothschild/Rockefeller/Illuminati conspiracies.

Where's Fox Mulder when you need him?

Posted by: oskar at November 3, 2009 11:24 PM

In this version of V, instead of of the kid spending all of his time playing with a toy Visitor shuttlecraft stuffed with action figures, he'll be chillin with his brahs and tweetin out to his homies about that fucked up bitch on the bottom of the spaceship.

I just watched V tonight. I am so glad I am not as hip, cool, or trendy as ya'll.

I really loved it. Alan Tudyk! Villian!

Crap, if I had my recorder working, I could have whipped something up as far as a V recap. But then I would have to explain why all my other shit is late.

How badly do we already want Teenage Son to die horribly? I would gladly give up a Klondike Bar to see him die horribly. You?

Oh, soooooo badly, especially if either his mom or Supergirl there kills him. Really, his death and the possibility of Morena Baccarin swallowing a rodent (don't judge me!) are all that is keeping me interested in watching further.

Oh, and more Evil Tudyk!

Who cares!!! My boyfriend also agrees with me. He is 10 years older than me, lol. We met online at age-gap club -- http://AgelessMeet.COM/. Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.

Alan Tudyk & Morena Baccarin

Fuck, maybe I'll watch the first episode after all.

I'm here, as usual, to talk about SYTYCD.

The Shankman is really growing on me as a judge. I wasn't always thrilled when he choreographed but he KILLS as a judge. He's articulate, gives fantastic, helpful critique, and was spot on when reviewing Tyce's gospel number in comparing it to Alvin Ailey and Fiddler on the Roof. Even though that number fell a little flat, I was happy to hear my favorite song from The Color Purple (God's Tryin to Tell You Something). I listen to it on Sundays and count it as going to church.

I was sorry to see Bianca go. I really enjoyed her and wanted to see what else she was capable of. Phillip, eh. He's not been performing well.
And Legacy is kind of awesome. Lots of good performances tonight. I'm more interested this season than last.

My thoughts:
I dug it. I liked that it rapidly established the Visitors as having a hidden agenda, showed they are lizards, revealed the 5th Column, and got through all the exposition that every sci-fi fan knows already.

Morena Bacarin was other-worldy and cold. A 180 degree flip from her very warm character Inara on “Firefly”. I wish she had been named “Diana” but “Anna” is more modern so I can see why they did it. Elizabeth Mitchell is a very good actress that is rising above the material. Her scene with her kid when she finds out he’s been tagging was acted at a level that wasn’t required for the fairly rote scene. I’ve been a fan of hers since LOST (and was also happy to see her star alongside Angelina Jolie in “Gia”).

I thought the twists were good. I didn’t suspect Alan Tudyk was a V nor did I think Morris Chestnut was, either. I was sorry to see Tudyk get killed but it looks like he’s back next week so we shall see.

The premise is clever, giving the conspiracy theorists ONE BIG conspiracy theory to end all theories. I’m on board. Even though ABC is going to kill this next spring because they have failed utterly in launching every sci-fi series not named LOST. Although with LOST going off after this season they may have to stick with it.

I do dislike the delinquent kid. I came to the realization that none of the shows I really like have kids in them. House, BSG, LOST, Sons of Anarchy, etc, NO CHILDREN. Probably because they tend to be crap actors. Let’s face it, all of Robin’s scenes in the original V were PAINFUL. I just hope the V eventually get blue laser guns and they make that “Fwap! Fwap!” noise. My needs are simple. I also miss the fairly iconic theme song.

I’ll admit I thrilled a bit when the hottie Visitor blonde said “Welcome to the New York mothership.” It was like, yep, this is “V”.

I love Adam as a judge - was actually happy when they made him permanent. He was adorable last week when he did his Lil C impression. I felt terribly for Bianca and Phillip, but at the same time thought they were the correct choices.

Tyce's choreography does nothing for me most of the time. His routines seem to start strong and then fall flat.

As for V, I thought it was just ok. It seemed rather silly to me how Elizabeth Mitchell's character was fed little breadcrumbs that let her to the exact right information; it was all so easy for her to be involved in the "secret group". I thought the discovery could have been drawn out a bit longer.

Aaahhhh! Bianca got cut from SYTYCD? I had to go to bed early so I missed most of it. Poor girl can't catch a break with that show! Phillip was kinda smug so I don't really care so much, although I did feel bad watching him struggle to lift Channing. The girl is fit but she's not small. For some reason I've developed a hatred of Ashleigh (maybe because of how she spells her stupid name), so I'm rooting for her to be cut ASAP. I'm not liking her husband so much either since he declared that his masculinity would be a unique trait to bring to the show (basically called all the other guys pussies).

I'll have to catch up on V later, but I'm kinda tired of the "aliens turn out to be ugly and therefore must be evil" idea. I'd already be incredibly skeptical if aliens showed up and somehow looked like a race of human supermodels; I'd just assume they were masking their appearance to keep people from freaking out, because what are the chances they'd evolve to look just like us? It'd be nice to have a show where they were odd-looking and there was conflict simply because we thought differently, not because they had some eeeevil plan on enslaving us.

SPOILER ALERT????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
V:
That episode was jumpy as hell. Some of the lines were weird and my eyes rolled out of my fucking head during the jeweler scene. That was some awful writing. Speaking of, my wife totally called the twist with Morris' character. She's creepy like that.
As others have stated, I also desire the rebel teenager's death. The word "leering" comes to mind.
Amazingly, Party-of-Five boy didn't bother me at all. His inner-confusion face will fit in nicely here. And what's with his assistant?! Her face freaked me way out.
You don't one off the Tudyk! He'll be around, haunting that lady's dreams or the V's will slap his skin on another V, or both.
Anna. Sweet Anna. Some women can pull off the boycut, others cannot. Anna can. Oh yes, she can.

Posted by: Kballs at November 4, 2009 8:11 AM

Kballs, I think if people come here to read about last night's tv, they aren't going to be spoiled.

Posted by: Cindy at November 4, 2009 8:20 AM

My rating for "V"? 2 mehs.
Points for including both Inara & Wash (YEAH FIREFLIERS!!!), Juliet kicking some butt, the beautiful Morris Chestnut, but minus points for the shitty writing, awful blonde chick from "Smallville," plastic Party of Five boy, and uber-annoying teenage son.

Tivo'd this week so Mr. Dammit can check it out, but overall, I think once was enough.

Damn, as much as I love Morena, I do miss the ultra-scary Diana, and Freddy Krueger in the original.

Question: Will Morena/Anna deep-throat a rat as in the original? Discuss.

Posted by: dammitjanet at November 4, 2009 8:23 AM

"Plastic Party-of-Five boy" has had Work done, and it was not done well. They should've cast him as a V--his face actually looks like a mask over something horrible.

Posted by: Jerce at November 4, 2009 8:58 AM

Cindy,
I DVR 90% of the shows I watch, and I like reading these comment threads. I am a confused, self-flagellating man who sees spoilers at every turn. For example, I know who is kicked off SYTYCD, even though I came here to comment about V.

Off topic: Has anyone looked up the IMDB pages for the main BSG actors and actresses? They've all done the same shows at one time or another. The funniest one is "The L Word." About 5 of them have guest starred. Space lesbians.

Posted by: Kballs at November 4, 2009 8:59 AM

I tried my best to get into “V” but I just couldn’t, something was missing. The aesthetics were ok but it seemed to lack a soul. Those hot little bitches that paraded themselves around town can only take a story so far. Maybe the “V” stands for “Vag.”

Posted by: Guess Who! at November 4, 2009 9:04 AM

If, in the second ep, I hear the line "You rock" even a single time, I'm out. Once was painful enough, but then to hear it a second time within the first half hour? That's some crazy original writing, there.

Posted by: neurotica at November 4, 2009 9:07 AM

I give "V" a meh too... acting and writing was hit and miss. But damn, the visuals of the spaceships floating over NYC and other cities were breathtaking. Seriously, one of the most beautiful shots I've seen in a stupid tv show. Effects guys should get bonuses for Christmas.

Re: SOA dialogue: Agreed, but do bear in mind that these characters are mostly sleazy, "undereducated" biker-types, so too large a vocabulary might be equally unrealistic. It's a fine line.
