It’s Halloween! I know a lot of you probably celebrated last night since it was a Saturday and all, but I spent last night watching a high school marching band competition that happened to involve a lot of extremely talented and dedicated kids, one of whom happens to be my sister. Still, I hope some of you are celebrating tonight, even if it doesn’t mean going out in costume or taking anyone trick or treating. And, of course, even if you’re not really into the whole Halloween thing tomorrow rivals only the Monday after Easter for sheer volume and variety of discounted candy available. Happy Halloween! Here’s your Sunday night TV:

7:00pm: “60 Minutes” on CBS

“America’s Funniest Home Videos” on ABC

“Football Night in America” on NBC

“Ghost Hunters” on SyFy. This is called “Ghost Hunters Live!” and is listed as a special six hour presentation. So, if any of you out there were huge Ghost Hunter fans but really wished you could just spend your entire night watching one episode of it, your dream has come true.

8:00pm: “Amityville: The Final Testament” on A&E

“The Amazing Race” on CBS

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” on ABC

“Food Network Challenge” on Food Network. They’re making cakes based on urban legends. I’m a little confused as to what that might look like.

“World Series Game #4” on Fox

“Jerseylicious” on Style

“Nature: Invastion of the Giant Pythons” on PBS

8:15pm: “Sunday Night Football: Pittsburgh Steelers at New Orleans Saints” on NBC

9:00pm: “Boardwalk Empire” on HBO

“Bridezillas” on WE

“Desperate Housewives” on ABC

“Dexter” on Showtime

“IRT: Deadliest Roads” on History

“Masterpiece: Sherlock, Part 2” on PBS

“The Next Iron Chef” on Food Network

“Paranormal State” on A&E

“Undercover Boss” on CBS. They’re doing Chiquita this week, I’m wondering if they’re flying the boss down to the jungle to pick bananas. That might be worth watching.

9:30pm: “Paranormal State” on A&E

10:00pm: “Bored to Death” on HBO

“CSI: Miami” on CBS

“Fantasia For Real” on VH1

“Luther” on BBCA

“Outrageous Food” on Food Network. Series premiere. And for halloween they’re doing… the 105 pound hamburger. Unless it got to 105 pounds by eating a small child, I’m not seeing that it’s really keeping with the theme of the evening.

“Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal” on A&E

“Sister Wives” on TLC

“Swamp People” on History. First season finale.

“The Walking Dead” on AMC. 90 minute series premiere. I know a lot of you have been looking forward to this and I’ll admit I hope it’s as good as we want it to be. I’m just slightly apprehensive about a whole TV series about zombies.

“Brothers and Sisters” on ABC

10:30pm: “Eastbound and Down” on HBO

“Football Wives” on VH1

11:15pm: “Luther: Inside Look” on BBCA

12:00am: “Children’s Hospital” on Adult Swim. In case you haven’t had your fill of clowns yet.

You better believe I'm celebrating tonight. I don't think my yard will ever be the same after the stampede of trick-or-treaters going through the haunt this year.

If you are not watching this you should just go ahead and kill yourself.

Rusty's a total babe.

just sayin.

Ooh, I wonder if anyone'll do "The Mexican Pet"! What a fun cake that would be.*

Seriously, WTF? "Urban legends"? No matter; tonight I only have eyes for The Walking Dead.

(*Google it, foo's.)

Rusty: If you had read the comic book (which already spans 78 remarkable issues) you wouldn't doubt the ability of a series about zombies to sustain itself.

Now, I am a bit concerned that the epic scope of the book will take too long to develop on TV, and viewers will see it as a made-for-TV "28 Days Later." It is so much more, but it takes time.

How would they go about making a "giant alligator living in the sewer" cake. And NO making a fondant covered alligator cake ain't gonna cut it.

*pant pant pant* Sorry, it's been so long, my enthusiasm is out of shape.

EeeeeEeEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE . . .

Walking Dead was damn fine.

Seriously.

I was duly impressed.

Great production values, excellent character development, and some really awesome set pieces so far. I know what I'm gonna be doing next Sunday night.

Zombiegasm.

I think the Walking Dead TV series will be fine, in comparison to the comic series, if they condense some of the story, as I think they've already done with the premiere. The comic tends to explore the human side of the crisis across issues, especially some of the traveling parts, and rightly so. The TV series can maintain that dialogue but progress through the storyline more quickly. It should be fine. I'm more concerned how some sections, like the when they meet the two settlements early on, will be handled because of the violence, both physical and sexual.

Just over 1/2 way through, made me cry twice. I'm a baby. A giant, zombie-loving baby. Here's hoping they keep up the good work. Cheers.

ALERT: Just got back from the West Hollywood cavortion (I love to make up words), and there was a guy there dressed as the human centipede. As in, he was the front woman, and then behind him was the infamous kneecapped diagram strapped to his backside. I sat on the curb of Santa Monica Blvd. and shivered, knocking my head against the base of a light-post trying to get the image out of my head.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic at hand. I just felt a duty to share the misery this fine Halloween night.

As you were...

The Walking Dead was great. The only problem I had with it was that terrible frame delay effect, bedridden scene. It looked like some crappy Unsolved Mysteries reenactment.

Posted by: wonderbreadhead at November 1, 2010 6:38 AM

The first 15-20 minutes had me seriously concerned -- badly written dialogue delivered in shaky accents, the aforementioned frame delay effect, and the distraction of wondering how the main character didn't die of starvation in the hospital bed. He had to have been unattended for, what, two weeks? A month?

I had a hard time getting past that. But once the situation was established, the show really hit its stride.

"the distraction of wondering how the main character didn't die of starvation in the hospital bed. He had to have been unattended for, what, two weeks? A month?"
------------------------------------
Fact: The average human body can survive without food or water for six months. We all have a latent starvation mode that activates once the body realizes it's in an apocalyptic type situation (be it zombie, robot or other type). Oh and make that one year for Vulcans.

The Walking Dead is my new favorite show, they’ve drawn me in for the long con. For a moment there I thought I was watching “The Wire,” due to that brother handing out head shots like free candy. Oh god do I love head shots.

Fact: The average human body can survive without food or water for six months.

Would the presence of a gunshot wound in rotted dressing affect this prognosis?

Posted by: sansho1 at November 1, 2010 8:50 AM

sansho1:

He was on two drips if I remember at the beginning. He pulled one out before he left the bed. Let's assume one was a saline drip (that would have helped him stay hydrated until it ran out) and the other could have been antibiotics so it's possible the infection was kept at bay and given that he was a healthy human before being shot, the body's immune system could have done the rest. It all depends how long he was comatose for, but the body does have ways of compensating for deficiencies, especially while comatose.

Posted by: PaddyDog at November 1, 2010 9:19 AM

I think he was dehydrated due to the fact that as soon as he pulled out the IV and stumbled out of bed, he went to the bathroom and headed straight for the sink to get some water. Maybe they should have shown him taking a piss, excessive peeing is an indication of dehydration.

They should have done more with the gunshot wound, but I can believe that before he went off to dream land the doctors took out the bullet and gave him some strong antibiotics. The fact that he had two drips post surgery brings into focus for me that the entire healing process is plausible.

Between The Walking Dead on AMC and Dead Set on IFC this has been a good week for zombies.

Posted by: John W at November 1, 2010 11:41 AM

I was duly impressed by The Walking Dead. Haven't read the books, so I don't have anything to "compare" it to, but damn, that was some good shit.

Posted by: MM at November 1, 2010 11:54 AM

I'm with the rest of the viewers who had a hard time suspending disbelief at the beginning hospital sequence.

First, he didn't have a catheter to pull out, nor were his bedclothes/underwear soiled (he'd a been in a gown anyway). So he would have been lying in his own waste for several days at the very least - even if we assume that for some reason, hospital staff were continuing to provide him fresh bags of fluids.

Second, humans can really only last about 4 days without water (rule of 4 - four minutes without air, 4 days without water, 40 days without food). And before someone brings up Gandhi, remember his fasts included drinking fruit juice and water.

And Third - get some shoes on man! Did you not watch Die Hard???

Separately, I had a hard time dealing with his casual attitude entering Atlanta. Given what he had recently seen, he would have been far more careful and probably more easily spooked by the first few zombies. He hadn't had time to become inured to the presence of the undead (and I just didn't like what happened to the horse, so that's probably why this bugged me)

i had been looking forward to The Walking Dead.
But rising this morning after not having slept a wink last night i remembered why i can't watch zombie movies.
On a related note, my house makes waaaay too many unexplained noises in the middle of the night.

Posted by: Scott at November 1, 2010 12:38 PM

The Walking Dead was incredibly well executed, with some awesome visual moments of syncing perfectly with the graphic novel. If I recall, the gunshot wound isn't meant to be too fresh; a fair amount of time passed while he was out before the world goes nuts, and second Pookie's speculation on the drips. I'm definitely along for the ride...

Posted by: eskiimomo at November 1, 2010 12:57 PM

You made several good points morganew, but let me add a few of my own.

1.Laying in your own waste for several days isn’t all that bad, trust me.

2.Gandhi fasted?

3. I’m not one of those guys that constantly point out what I perceive to be racial undercurrents, but the scene where the father walks up to the white, Hugo Boss dressed zombie and shoots ( with an unregistered gun I might add) him in the head for no apparent reason was a tad bit unnecessary. And then his young son with the afro and dressed in his gang apparel hits another white guy in the head was just a little over the top for me. And did I mention that the entire scene takes place in the ATL.
