When You Stare Into the Abyss, the Abyss Stares Back at You

In my house (or rather, my room in my house, because neither of my roommates have a TV), Tuesday is known as “Netflix Night.” Come November, it’ll probably become “Reading Night” because that’s when the wonderful Cannonball Read 2 will be starting! In a cruel twist of fate, I’m going to be busy tomorrow night when all the good TV is on, but am totally free tonight. It’s like the TV Lords are mocking me for my insolence. For anyone interested, here’s what’s on this Tuesday night:

7:57pm: ALCS Game #4 between the Yankees and the Angels on FOX. Why it starts at 7:57 rather than 8:00, I have no idea.

8:00pm: “The Biggest Loser” on NBC

“NCIS” on CBS. I don’t know anyone who watches this show, but apparently it’s popular enough to warrant a spin-off.

9:00pm: “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC

“Melrose Place” on The CW

“NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS (See?)

10:00pm: “The Good Wife” on CBS

“The Jay Leno Show” on NBC

“Sons of Anarchy” on FX

Intern Rusty is a Masters student at the University of Miami. She currently has four jobs and receives a regular paycheck from 50% of them. You can read about how she’s handling all this over at Rusty’s Ventures.

I know who watches NCIS. My parents like that show. I have yet to understand why. Mark Harmon's character appears to be the most humorless person in the world. And that sound effect they play when they cut to or from commercial and the scene goes black & white haunts me in my dreams. *shudder*

Tuesday night's "Homework Night" for me as I usually have assignments due Thursday. Or "Catch-up-on-my-Hulu/Netflix Queue" night.

Point is, it's uneventful and the TV sucks.

Rustler, you know plenty of people who watch "NCIS" because they post regularly on this here website.

My parents love this show. LOVE IT. Which I'm okay with, because they really like the goth scientist chick on it and I think that's why they're slowly becoming okay with their daughter being a punk scientist chick. Although they still make stealth appointments with my mom's hairdresser Jill to get my hair dyed a natural color every time I come home with it dyed pink.

Posted by: s. pisaster at October 20, 2009 7:15 PM

@ Ms s. pisaster
You're a punk scientist chick?

Have you checked out the Cocktail Party Physics blog/site yet?

You might dig it. It's all full of smarty female science-y broads.

Posted by: Ms MoMo at October 20, 2009 7:27 PM

Who cares about normal TV. I'm watching Pittsburgh clean the ice with St. Louis.

Here's my problem with NCIS (aside from it riding the coattails of CSI - but not that it really matters anyhow since I could give a flying frick about either): Pauley Perrette.

Yeah - the "goth" scientist chick. I have a problem with her.

I'm going to hop on to seastar's props with being a punk scientist chick, but come the fuck on - she's older than I am - which, and one would assume, would warrant the same bias toward Hot Topic as I do - IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE! Why would any self-respecting "goth" or "punk" shop at a place for "The Latest in Trendy Rock & Punk Apparel"? Shit, she's had the same goddam hair style since the show began, she's always decked head-to-toe in brand-new duds, and.... GAH, THERE'S NO RHYME OR REASON! I've known people who "fit" into this demographic/clique for the longest time, and maybe aside from hair dyes or particular shades of nail polish, there's no reason they'd set foot in a fucking Hot Topic. It's the same as a forty year old fella buying his duds at Abercrombie... Punk/goth lifestyle does not equal going to the mall - especially if you're pushing forty. Don't get me wrong, punk & goth women are foxy as as all get-out, but NCIS chooses to show her as a half-retarded, yet smart, wannabe teen who buys her duds at a place that worships A Nightmare Before Christmas and Twilight.

Now, where the fuck is my Metamucil?

Posted by: Skitz at October 20, 2009 7:40 PM

No one can top Annie Potts in "Pretty In Pink", Skitz. Alpha and Omega.

My good friend watches this show. Religiously. She also watches Greys Anatomy, is obsessed with Twilight, likes Black Eyed Peas songs, and she loves Jennifer Aniston movies.

Now you may be wondering why I keep such company, because I afterall have to have some sort of taste because I'm a Pajiban. The answer to that? I drink. Heavily and quite often actually. She doesn't but still likes to go to bars. It's like having my own personal designated driver at all times!

It's been the highest rated show on television for most of the last month. So, whatever.

Yeah - the "goth" scientist chick. I have a problem with her.

No problem - I'll take her.

"Dirty Jobs" had Mike Rowe at a mosquito testing lab. The scientist flirting with him (hard) had green hair, a bandanna, and a GIANT skeeter tat on her upper back that she was glad to show off.

So, hot goth/punk scientists? Check.

Just in case anyone misunderstood me; I wasn't saying that I had any opinion on the quality of NCIS, just that I was aware that it was a fantastically popular show and I didn't know anyone who watched it. But now I do, thanks to Spender! And also that guy from my Masters program who told me he watched it after I told him I'd just written an article about how there was no good TV on tonight.

I like NCIS....AND I like this website ***UNIVERSE IMPLODES***

Wow! This person actually exists? Unironically?

Seriously, though, NCIS is always in the top 10 shows, so SOMEBODY watches it.

Posted by: MM at October 20, 2009 8:17 PM

I'm watching Top 4: SYTYCD Canada. It's going pretty good I guess, I just love Everett... That is all.

Oh and it's time to face the issue of elder abuse, as per these government commercials.

I'm surprised that no one has put two and two together - Baby Boomers love NCIS. Who is still watching TV the way they have for decades? Baby Boomers. Everyone else (i.e., everyone under the age of 50) who torrents their shows, Tivo's them, or watches Hulu, aren't being counted in real time. Beyond the seismic shift in viewer age, our tastes in TVs are no longer being counted in an equivalent manner. The funny thing is that advertisers haven't caught up, and are still advertising to the 18-49 crowd.

Posted by: Ken at October 20, 2009 8:29 PM

I guess NCIS got all the viewers who were heartbroken when JAG was canceled. Remember JAG? Only old people ever watched that damned show, and now they're all loving NCIS with the same cute and bland All American hero and the completely harmless storylines.

Posted by: figgy at October 20, 2009 8:33 PM

Another Pajiban whose parents can't get enough of NCIS, right there.

Posted by: Kate at October 20, 2009 8:45 PM

This is true figgy, my parents had to fill the JAG void with something. For the record, I do not ever shop at Hot Topic, nor do I endorse shopping at Hot Topic under any circumstances.
I haven't heard of that sight, Ms Momo, but I'll check it out.

Victoria, What's the score n at?

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at October 20, 2009 9:01 PM

Exactly, Ken. NCIS' ratings aren't really a mystery--it's just that just about everyone within a certain age range is watching it religiously. Live.

Posted by: figgy at October 20, 2009 9:10 PM

I guess I don't agree in the seismic shift principle. That people my age are completely off the normal TV viewing wagon. Everyone I know, and we're all college educated/techy/middle class americans, watches normal TV in real time just as much as Tivo'ing and the Net. It's generally time management. Sometimes I have to work Thursday nights and miss The Office and 30rock, I can't afford Tivo, but thankfully NBC does a decent job of putting their stuff online, so I get to stay a viewer of the show.

Posted by: e at October 20, 2009 9:42 PM

A) I'm over 50 and watch NCIS.
B) I also watch 30 Rock, The Office, House, Community, Glee, Dexter and SG-U.
C) I know how to TiVo, find shows on Hulu and use torrents. (Yes, I taught myself how to do all of those things.)

I don't understand NCIS being defined as "Matlock" for the Baby Boomers. because it has a decent cast with good chemistry and story lines that are decent (if predictable) and fun to watch. It is not great but good tv and there's really nothing wrong with that. Call it a guilty pleasure if you want.

Also... Agent Simon Donovan!

He lives!

Entire night don't suck.

Sons of Anarchy is must watch tv

Posted by: Silchas RUin at October 21, 2009 4:31 AM

Kudos on the tagline.

I saw that Nietschze quote on a Marvel comic, of all places, when I was probably about 13 or 14. It quickly become my go-to quotation once I underwent my "I'm a misunderstood nihilist who despises the world but still wants the popular kids to be his friends" phase a couple of years later.

No comment on the TV schedule, since I live in Portugal and don´t know most of those shows. NCIS sucks, though.

(As an aside, my Mum knows the father of Daniela Ruah from NCIS. They´re not friends, but they´re stop-and-chat acquaintances. I never knew Daniela, however, which is a pity since we´re the same age and could probably have made out ten years ago. Then I could say that I had made out with an actress :( )

PS: Yeah, I know, I´m a pathetic loser.

I love the fuck out of NCIS. It's the best show to watch at the gym!

he's like 100.

NCIS is a fun enough show to watch, but even my father (the NCIS nut in the house) says LA lacks the charm of the original.

Called my mom last night, and she was complaining how she had started falling asleep in her chair and missing her favorite TV show -- NCIS.

Posted by: Drake at October 21, 2009 11:02 AM

102, gp! Please, get it right.

Now, excuse me while I sit and stare at my "Jessica Fletcher" poster and dream about a hot three-way with Ms. Murder she wrote and that spitfire, Cloris Leachman.
WhooooooooHooooo!
SESSY!

Who cares!!! My boyfriend also agrees with me. He is 10 years older than me, lol. We met online at age-gap club -- http://AgelessOnly.COM/. Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.
