Philip Seymour Hoffman — who had received three Academy Award nominations (including one win from Capote) and three Tony Award nominations, and is considered one of the generation’s best actors — was found dead today in his apartment, according to the Wall Street Journal. No cause of death has yet been identified, though a WSJ reporter states that hewas found in the bathroom with a needle in his arm. He leaves behind three children with his long-time partner Mimi O’Donnell.

The actor had some struggles with substance abuse last year, having spent 10 days in a detox facility, for heroin abuse. However, he was set to direct his second film, Ezekiel Moss. Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal had only just recently signed on to star.

In either respect, he was an amazing, brilliant actor, known to many for his various amazing roles, but his best — to me — will always be his role as Lester Bangs in Almost Famous, a film during which he had the flu during his entire shoot.

RIP Mr. Hoffman. You will be terribly, terribly missed.
