It’s either going to be ugly or dull. I’m actually hoping for the latter, but expecting the former.

Y’all talk amongst yourselves.

My prediction: It's gonna be dull.

Posted by: Jerce at October 7, 2008 7:25 PM

Dull and ugly. But not in the awesome cringe-worthy ugly way.

Posted by: Sage at October 7, 2008 7:46 PM

I want *SMACKDOWN* damnit! RUMBLE!

Posted by: figgy at October 7, 2008 7:50 PM

Hopefully Palin drops by in her F-18 and shoots that wolf of a person that is McCain. *wink*

Posted by: Sofía at October 7, 2008 7:52 PM

ya gotta love the McCain ad though: "He Lied." Dun dun dun. Jesus thank you it's less than a month till this is all over.

Posted by: patchfire at October 7, 2008 7:52 PM

Obama won.

NEXT!

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at October 7, 2008 7:53 PM

I'm a rakish young hippy wearing my "Barack is the Future" shirt which of course looks like the "Back to the Future" logo. I am visiting my conservative parents, and there is beer. Things shan't be dull here.

They simply shan't.

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 7:56 PM

I've got beer and popcorn, and I plan on yelling a lot. I'm also hoping McCain's head pops off.

Posted by: Cindy at October 7, 2008 7:58 PM

I'm just hoping like hell that McCain loses his shit and drops the N-bomb.

Posted by: telesilla at October 7, 2008 8:01 PM

Oh wait, actually they're going to watch Dancing With the Stars now. Perhaps they shall.

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 8:02 PM

I would be kind of awesome in a train wreck way if McCain really lost his shit. Like, his colostomy bag fell out of the leg of his trousers.

Posted by: Rachel T at October 7, 2008 8:03 PM

I just hope it's aggravating enough that it forces McCain to tear off his human flesh and reveal that he's a Skeksis, whereupon Obama and he square off in Haakskeekah, set to the tunes of West Side Story. Either that, or when John becomes flustered, he sends out Palin to show her lady parts... Either way, I'll be happy.

Posted by: Skitimus Maximus at October 7, 2008 8:07 PM

Damnit, I'm in class and can't drink every time McCain does that scary grunt thing he does. I'm there in spirit!

Posted by: Farfalina at October 7, 2008 8:12 PM

I have a kind of drinking game set to go: If Obama brings up the Keating Five, I am going to get shithouse stinking drunk.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Posted by: Jerce at October 7, 2008 8:13 PM

My prediction:
lots of character assasination and claims that our problems are something the government can fix for us if only we elect the correct pandering dickweed.

Posted by: Eep at October 7, 2008 8:15 PM

Skittimus, your Skeksis remark finally cracked it for me. Palin is Crab People! Oooh, they are a shrewd bunch...

Posted by: Pants at October 7, 2008 8:16 PM

O my God, I am way too drunk too early. Damn you Greenwich Mean Time! Damn you to hell!

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 8:24 PM

Cindy, I'm with you. Here's hoping his head pops off. Beer and popcorn sound like excellent ideas as well... going to go get out my Obama shirt and open a bottle.

Posted by: Kizzer at October 7, 2008 8:34 PM

"...Either that, or when John becomes flustered, he sends out Palin to show her lady parts... Either way, I'll be happy."

Posted by: Skitimus Maximus at October 7, 2008 8:07 PM

I bet you are.

Aren't you late for your me'eting...Earl?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at October 7, 2008 8:41 PM

As the person in charge of liberating your country I feel that I must watch this exchange to determine strategy.

That and I am really hoping that we get to see Obama take McCain down with a vicious attack. Like he hides behind the podium and when McCain comes out he jumps out and yells BOO! and McCain has a massive coronary. Palin rushes the stage to administer mouth to mouth but can't because McCains false teeth have lodged in his throat.

That would be entertaining.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 8:58 PM

I'd prefer not to see Sarah Palin's lady parts. Or think about her administering mouth to mouth on McCain.

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 9:01 PM

I wonder what they give McCain. My Grandpa is always in bed by now.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 9:05 PM

HA!

Posted by: Farfalina at October 7, 2008 9:06 PM

"Let's not raise taxes on anyone. . . . today."

Does that mean he'll be raising them after he's in office?

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 9:08 PM

I know how to do that; that's why I'm not telling people how until I become President because I hate you all.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 9:09 PM

McCain's has a plan. He's gong to get all Mavericky up in there.

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 9:09 PM

Admin11: When pure meth is combined with the tears of the innocent, anything is possible.

Posted by: Just Joe at October 7, 2008 9:10 PM

Bullfucking shit. The government is going to buy up houses, eat a loss and sell them back at a lower price?

Posted by: Cindy at October 7, 2008 9:10 PM

Oliver Clark is just there to say things like "Bling Bling" and "That is whack!"

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 9:12 PM

Well said.

Posted by: Just Joe at October 7, 2008 9:12 PM

Yeah, we're all idiots. We've never heard of Fanny and Freddie. I did hear that take a load off my Fanny song once.

Posted by: Cindy at October 7, 2008 9:13 PM

I was just happy to hear that if the election were today, Obama would win outright.

Woo!

Also, Nick Bortz (sp?) is a dillweed.

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:14 PM

Did he just say we probably have never heard of Fanny Mae or Freddie Mac before? Really? What the fuck?

Posted by: Austin at October 7, 2008 9:15 PM

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 9:16 PM

Bad Obama! Don't say you don't want to point fingers after you just spent a minute doing it.

bad Obama bad!

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:16 PM

Obama was stumbling.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 9:18 PM

There you go, McCain. Let's start the pro-America flag waving bullshit.

Posted by: Dave at October 7, 2008 9:19 PM

God I hate these guys. This country is so fucked.

Posted by: Eep at October 7, 2008 9:19 PM

Theresa is kind of a bitch.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 9:20 PM

American's workers are the bestest evah!!!!1!

This sounds like a rehash of the first two debates. Same sound bites, same non-answers.

Posted by: jodeci at October 7, 2008 9:21 PM

Neither is credible to me

Posted by: greydove at October 7, 2008 9:21 PM

Can McCain pander more? "Americans are the best and brightest, blah, blah, blah, YAY Americans vote for me because I said you were pretty..." It's like he thinks we're all chicks with low self esteem.

PS: I enjoyed Teresa's emPHAsis when she asked her question!

Posted by: Lainey at October 7, 2008 9:21 PM

Say maverick. Say it!

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 9:22 PM

I seriously thought McCain put his hand on the leg of that broad in the front row for a second there.

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 9:23 PM

Well *I* wrote a letter too! Mine was to Shaun Cassidy warning him about the impending Bonaduce crisis... and NOBODY fucking listened.

MAKE ME THE PREZZ!

Posted by: farfelberry at October 7, 2008 9:23 PM

Did anybody read the article about McCain's history in Rolling Stone this week? Long story short, McCain's a 72 year old, craftier Bush.

Posted by: Dave at October 7, 2008 9:23 PM

Isn't it easier to show how much you've taken on your own party when you've been involved in government since Godtopus was young?

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 9:24 PM

McCain you dick! That planetarium in Chicago is the first planetarium in the Western hemisphere. It is a treasure, it is amazing, and it is directly responsible for getting me laid.

Go to hell.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 9:25 PM

McCain looks like he needs a nap...

The new drinking game word is FRIEND!

Posted by: Pants at October 7, 2008 9:25 PM

"Well *I* wrote a letter too! Mine was to Shaun Cassidy warning him about the impending Bonaduce crisis... and NOBODY fucking listened.

When's Nader going to fly in on a rainbow made of puppy dogs and love and put a verbal hurting on these two?

Posted by: Dave at October 7, 2008 9:28 PM

HA! He can do everything at once? He couldn't even campaign and handle the economy crisis at the same time.

Posted by: Pants at October 7, 2008 9:31 PM

My drinking game word is "earmarks" and did Obama just say he wanted to do something along the lines of a line-item veto?

Posted by: Austin at October 7, 2008 9:31 PM

My drinking game word is "earmarks" and did Obama just say he wanted to do something along the lines of a line-item veto? Didn't Clinton learn that lesson?

Posted by: Austin at October 7, 2008 9:32 PM

With no one winking and talking in puzzle language, this isn't as entertaining as the VP debate.

Posted by: Cindy at October 7, 2008 9:32 PM

9/11? Bad move Obama. Bets that we hear about McCain's war history.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 9:32 PM

Question: Did anyone watch "The Rachel Maddow Show" last night? I mised a lot of it, but she was talking about McCain's plan to cut Medicare by One TRILLION dollars over the next 10 years. Any truth in this and if so, is he intentionally trying to lose the Florida vote? With all of the Boomers hitting retirement age, that seems unfuckingbelievable that a candidate would even hint at reducing Medicare...

Posted by: Lainey at October 7, 2008 9:32 PM

I don't think Obama's winning over those Tennesseans by going on about energy.

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 9:32 PM

ha! Jakes, I love the planetarium. I never got laid there, but I still love that crusty old place.

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:33 PM

McCain likes to reach across the aisle..for what? A reacharound?

Posted by: Lauri at October 7, 2008 9:34 PM

Mmmm...jello.

Posted by: Marra at October 7, 2008 9:35 PM

Herbert Hoover:
Older reference lost on younger viewers.

A good point though.

Posted by: Eep at October 7, 2008 9:36 PM

Dear Godtopus,
Please let McCain poop his pants on national TV.
Amen

Posted by: Dave at October 7, 2008 9:36 PM

My new drinking game is every time I hear the word "taxes." I am SO wasted.

Posted by: jodeci at October 7, 2008 9:37 PM

Love me some Rachel Maddow! It's all part of his "spending freeze" plan.

Posted by: Algator at October 7, 2008 9:37 PM

In an overpopulated world, shouldn't we
STOP rewarding breeders for breeding? (I have a kid, so this isn't just bitterness on my part).

Posted by: idgiepug at October 7, 2008 9:38 PM

I'm not your fucking friend, "friend".

Posted by: Farfalina at October 7, 2008 9:38 PM

Seriously, Eep. Whenever someone mentions that I always think vacuum first, president second.

Posted by: Marra at October 7, 2008 9:38 PM

Tom Brokaw has more balls than Gwen Ifill.

Also, the Planetarium is better if you don't go inside. It's the best view of the city.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 9:39 PM

McCain looks doddering and mean. Crowd seems nice. O'bama shouldn't get off his game.

I do hope someone flips a bird though.

Posted by: indiebass at October 7, 2008 9:39 PM

Promises are for liars, Farfelberry. JUICE THE TRUTH, you naughty orange.

Posted by: Eep at October 7, 2008 9:39 PM

We're drinking every time he says "my friends".

Meanwhile, McCain must have taken meds tonight, because he's way too mellow.

Posted by: Cindy at October 7, 2008 9:40 PM

It's like watching 2 five years argue about who really broke the nice, expensive thing. Doesn't matter who did it or who is at fault, just start talking about something else!

Posted by: Melody at October 7, 2008 9:40 PM

"Herbert Hoover:
Older reference lost on younger viewers.

A good point though."

Except not. A badly thought out tax cut with a sunset clause not being renewed is not the same thing as raising taxes.

Posted by: Farfalina at October 7, 2008 9:40 PM

McCain always looks like he's working on a Monty Burns style hump, he's so cute!

Posted by: Chugga at October 7, 2008 9:42 PM

It's not that tough; that's why it's broken now.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 9:42 PM

"*I*'ll answer the question, Tom"

McCAIN 4 T3h LULZZZZZ!!!!!11!!!!1!

Posted by: indiebass at October 7, 2008 9:42 PM

McCain is saying the same thing to every question. My friends, let's cross party lines...I've done that before...Obama's going to raise taxes...

Posted by: Cindy at October 7, 2008 9:42 PM

Gee, am I so damn old that I'm the only person ON EARTH who remembers what the Reagan years were really like? Why do the republicans drool all over themselves over a return to the Reagan era?

Posted by: idgiepug at October 7, 2008 9:42 PM

To the economy it is. The tax rate goes up=a tax increase as far as the economy is concerned.

Posted by: Eep at October 7, 2008 9:43 PM

Friends, let us sit down across the table as friends and take on issues that we as friends know the solution too, the solution, my friends, that Senator Obama has never heard of because he's never reached across - as a friend, no gay shit.

Posted by: Marra at October 7, 2008 9:43 PM

You know, but telling people that you are against your party leadership, isn't that just admitting that your party sucks cock?

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 9:43 PM

Yes, Cindy. Yes. Also, he's gone against his own party.

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 9:44 PM

"I'll answer the question"
Not like Sarah, eh?

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:44 PM

Did the man with FACE CANCER just tell me that nuclear power is perfectly safe???

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:45 PM

Did anyone else notice that McCain didn't even look at the girl who asked the question?

Posted by: Marra at October 7, 2008 9:45 PM

You know, but telling people that you are against your party leadership, isn't that just admitting that your party sucks cock?

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at October 7, 2008 9:43 PM

Republicans don't believe in sucking cock.

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 9:45 PM

Yes. The possibility of a nuclear meltdown is much safer than solar panels and windmills.

Posted by: Dave at October 7, 2008 9:45 PM

The Monty Burns connection is growing! Did he just derisively scoff at "safe disposal or something" at nuclear reactors?

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

my viewing party friends and i have it down to drinking every time the phrases 'earmark', 'my record', 'job creation', '95%', and 'reform' are uttered. drink double with mentions of 'middle class' and cronyisms, with a draining of the glass every time brokaw puts on the smackdown.

also, why is mccain hunching so much tonight, effectively erasing his neck? he looks like a goddamn penguin waddling around that ye olde town hall.

Posted by: betsy at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

"My Friends" is his version of Palin's "Maverick".

Ok, but points for him because he can pronounce "nuclear" properly...

Wow, that's sad that the only positive thing I can find about McCain is his ability to pronounce a word. *sigh*

Posted by: Lainey at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

Yes, Marra - and he didn't call her "my friend" either.

Posted by: Cindy at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

Reagan nostalgia: Same reason some folks still miss Thatcher. Those were good time for a certain group and they want a return to glory. Like "I Love the 80s", but with greedy shites.

Full disclosure: I did love the 80s, but politics had nothing to do with it.

Posted by: Gib at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

Nuclear power is safe? Tell that to the people at Chernobyl.

McCain keeps bringing up the same "94 tax increase" stat that has been discredited in BOTH of the previous debates. At least come up with new mud, guy.

Posted by: jodeci at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

He couldn't remember her name.

It's INGRID.

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

Have either of them actually answered a question yet? Wait! McCain is a lefty? You guys are fucked.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 9:46 PM

Did McCain actually just warn America that Social Security and Medicare is going to be cut -- "we won't be able to fund them to the same standards as we do now"? Bad move, maverick, your peeps at the AARP aren't going to find that kind of "change" so great.

Posted by: Wednesday at October 7, 2008 9:47 PM

ah, so McCain lived on a nuclear ship -- explains a lot.

Posted by: farfelberry at October 7, 2008 9:47 PM

I'm bored, this is not as fun!

McCain needs to be careful when he's leaning on his chair & writing at the same time. He really could fall & break a hip.

Posted by: Austin at October 7, 2008 9:47 PM

Nuclear power is safe? Tell that to the people at Chernobyl.

McCain keeps bringing up the same "voted 94 times for a tax increase" stat that has been discredited in BOTH of the previous debates. At least come up with new mud, guy.

Uhhhh jodeci, you might want to look up the story on Chernobyl. When intelligent people run nuclear power plants then yes, it is safe.

Posted by: Alex at October 7, 2008 9:50 PM

Sure, you know, Clitty McGoo, the black guy. That one. Right there.

Posted by: Marra at October 7, 2008 9:50 PM

I wish I could be drinking. Too bad it's the middle of the day in Australia and I'm in a uni computer lab. Also too bad that my keeping track of the election serves no purpose.
I just want to pinch McCain's cheek and give him a hug! He's such a teddy bear.

Posted by: Chugga at October 7, 2008 9:50 PM

We get it, Brokaw, you're an asshole and we're going by your rules!

Posted by: Algator at October 7, 2008 9:51 PM

This is by far the best way to weather the debate. Thanks to posters for keeping me up to date and smiling instead of cringing and cowering behind my hands (as I might be if I were watching it happen).

Posted by: slartibartfast at October 7, 2008 9:51 PM

wait, Alex, do you know something we don't?
Remind me about Chernobyl... I was a wee one when that happened.

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:52 PM

Obama, I love you, I'm going to vote for you, but PLEASE, for the love of Godtopus, ANSWER THE FUCKING QUESTION.

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 9:52 PM

Except the last president to raise taxes during hard economic times was actually George HW Bush.

Posted by: PaddyDog at October 7, 2008 9:53 PM

McCain walks like Frankenstein.

"UGH!!! GRRR!!! OBAMA BAAAD!!!!"

Posted by: Dave at October 7, 2008 9:53 PM

I was going to say the same thing, Alex. Fear of technology is so unfortunate.

Posted by: Eep at October 7, 2008 9:53 PM

The dangers of Nuclear power are heavily overrated. I say this as a member of a nation which contains one of the biggest reserves of Uranium in the world and yet possess only one Nuclear reactor (not used for supplying power).
Did Obama just imply that McCain is God?

Posted by: Chugga at October 7, 2008 9:53 PM

Posted by: Marra at October 7, 2008 9:55 PM

Obama gonna cover all my maternitys.

Posted by: farfelberry at October 7, 2008 9:55 PM

Just so I understand. I have 2 kids and need health care. So McCain is going to give me $13,000 back? 1/3 of the average salary? Give me a fucking break.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 9:56 PM

I'm less concerned about the safety of the nuclear plants themselves than what we would do with the spent fuel - it's going to be around for longer than humanity... how many more deserts are going to be used as the dumping grounds?

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 9:56 PM

McCain = out of touch.

"Every parent I know wants to get healthcare for their children."

And how many people do you know, McCain, for whom paying for healthcare has ever been a want instead of a given?

"Every small business owner wants to give their employees health care coverage."

Bullshit.

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 9:57 PM

Universal health care. Say it. Just say "universal health care". Why won't you assholes just give us universal health care!?

Posted by: Dave at October 7, 2008 9:58 PM

Rockets into the sky! Or just sequester it. I don't think that Nuclear power is a longterm solution anyway, as it's just delaying the kind of problems we're now seeing with Fossil Fuels.

Posted by: Chugga at October 7, 2008 9:58 PM

WTF hair transplants?

Posted by: Lauri at October 7, 2008 9:59 PM

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 10:00 PM

And maybe I'm deluded...but since when is the US known as a peace making nation?

Posted by: kalafraja at October 7, 2008 10:00 PM

Okay, I had to get up to get another beer so I missed the last 5 minutes. Under McCain's $5K to everybody plan, does he expect us to shop around for our own insurance? I know I should be paying attention to this in the first place, but could someone please clarify that for me. What a pain in the arse that would be

My god the arrogance of these people. I find incredibly it offensive that they consider the US to be the greatest country ever.
It's statements like this more than almost anything else that creates bad feeling towards the US. If it wasn't for you people those kind of statements would be my entire experience of Americans. My view (as it was before I discovered this site) would not be a positive one.

What gives any one country the right to force their values on any other nation? Assuming you're any more right is just wrong. Maybe the system can be set up to perform peacemaking duties effectively but it's a UN issue and not a US one.

Posted by: Pants at October 7, 2008 10:13 PM

McCain is offering a clinic on diplomacy and international relations! How quaint! Dumbass.

To paraphrase, and correct me if I'm wrong - the US helped desperate Afghan "freedom fighters" to drive out the Russians. Then we left. Then they were screwed. Now we have to go and fight a war, and that makes us awesome. We're great, because we screwed over a country and then went back to screw with it some more.

Talk softly and carry a big stick???!?!?!?!?!??!??!?

For the love of fuck, when has the US government ever been known to "talk softly"?

Posted by: Marra at October 7, 2008 10:10 PM

Likely true. The kind of extreme patriotism I see exhibited in America (and some other countries which are somewhat less prominent obviously) is at least as dangerous as extremist religion. If the US was to continue to try to act in this capacity I would fully support some kind of military action against them, the same as I would against North Korea if they were to attack another country. I honestly don't see a distinction.

Just out of interest, what is the source of the American fear of socialism? Is it just a holdover from the cold war? Also the freedom thing, it reminds of a Tracey quote from 30 Rock, something along the lines of "so if the law curbs our desires, then we can no longer be free!" Obviously total freedom is not a virtue a country would aspire to, there is such a thing as too much freedom.

Posted by: Chugga at October 7, 2008 10:38 PM

I'm sorry but I have to ask. Why does everybody else have to follow the rules except America. I mean they don't have to listen to the U.N., won't be subjected to the World Court and seem to make the rules as they go along. This is why America has a less than steller reputation in the world.

(And by "they" I mean policy makers not Americans in general).

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 10:38 PM

I think McCain gets a lot of leeway for his warbling old man voice. It makes his little speeches sound impassioned, sagely, and adorably codgery. You just wanna say "Ah, shucks" and pinch his chipmunk cheek. It was the most powerful part of his closing.

Posted by: Baboon at October 7, 2008 10:38 PM

I'm a claims adjuster in California. I e-mailed a bodily injury release to a woman who lives in Stockton, CA, and when she replied, there was a HUGE "MCCAIN PALIN 2008" banner at the bottom of her e-mail.

So, there you go, someone who will vote for them.

I think that people in Northern California (at least around me) don't admit so openly to voting for McCain/Palin. I know a bunch of people who will vote for Obama, and a few people who become incredibly quiet when the subject comes up. I think those are the Republicans.

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 10:51 PM

We're in the middle of an election campaign in Canada at the moment, though probably most Canadians know more about the US situation than our own (mostly because yours is darned entertaining, doggone it.)

This weekend, dozens of homes were vandalized in Toronto - homes with signs for Liberal candidates on their lawns. The brake lines on their cars were cut, telephone lines, etc. Brake lines were cut - these people were trying to KILL people that had opposing political views.

The world is a terrifying place.

Posted by: kalafraja at October 7, 2008 10:52 PM

Kalafraja, 99% of my family tree (brought to you by Georgia and the Carolinas, thankyouverymuch)and 50% of my coworkers will vote McCain/Palin next month. It will be a long holiday season, and I'd swear I was adopted if I didn't look just like my dad.

I don't believe anyone's undecided--they're just reluctant to come down openly on the side of McCain/Palin. Sure, there are things I'm less than thrilled with about Obama/Biden, but choosing them is the simplest choice I've faced since I said "No, thank you, no veal for me". The CNN poll has over 80% of people saying a debate has never made them change the way they planned to vote, and there's a segment of the population that won't vote Obama even if you give them a million dollars each. It's a waste of time to keep pretending they can be reached.

Posted by: Gib at October 7, 2008 10:53 PM

kalafraja -

Yes, that is terrifying. Although I'm surprised we don't hear of that happening here, particulary with Obama running.

I have a hard time believing we're more civilized in the US than in Canada.

Posted by: ncnn at October 7, 2008 10:54 PM

kalafraja, I live and work with "Joe and Jane Sixpacks". It's very disheartening, frankly. People who normally seem smart buy into the whole "she's/he's just like me - wooohoo!" They think Democrats are scary and want to raise taxes and force people to have abortions. They're sure that if the Democrats are in office teh gays will be getting married willy-nilly and Mexicans are going to storm the country and steal their guns. It's really sad.

The comments I heard after the VP debate were mostly along the lines of, "she seems awfully nice and like she and her husband worked really hard to create a stable, happy family". I'm not sure where they got that from the debate, but they bought the image. It seems like likeability is more important than experience, question answering and not sounding like a dumbass...

Posted by: Lainey at October 7, 2008 10:55 PM

The same is happening in my office Lainey.

Posted by: Stella at October 7, 2008 10:56 PM

It's a shocking situation, absolutely...and really unheard of here. It may sound terrible, but I think that we're so riled up here about the American electoral process that it's impacting our view of politics in general.

In Canada, and I suspect in the US, it's less about parties and more about direction. There is a "war", if you will, between small c liberals and conservatives. We're at a turning point - people know more than they did five years ago, eight years ago...the world is a much different place....crazy shit is going on....and the time has come for the collective to make a call about the direction we'll take. This is an election for change, or commitment, on both sides of the border. Regardless of the outcome, it will be terrifying for one segment of the population.

And that is when crazy shit will happen.

Posted by: kalafraja at October 7, 2008 10:57 PM

Tax is money taken from citizens at gunpoint.
Universal health care is a tax-funded mandate.
Socialized medicine is forcing each of us to take care of all of us or else, with the only true power or freedom enjoyed by those elected and appointed to supervise and enforce the robbery.
If you look forward to the relief of not having to look after yourself, then you are looking forward to the day when the government oppresses others in order to appease you. If you think it is just the government putting your own money to better use, then why not cut out the government middleman and invest your earnings? If your earnings are insufficient to effect such a strategem, then why is it acceptable to steal in order to make up the difference?
If this frightens you less than the evils and excesses of capitalism, then you are not worth saving from yourself.

Posted by: Lee at October 7, 2008 10:59 PM

It's funny how many Americans seem to think so differently than the rest of the world. I haven't heard a single non-American (primarily Australian, but encompassing a few other nationalities as well) express hope that McCain will get into office. What's with that?

Posted by: Chugga at October 7, 2008 10:59 PM

I don't mean to offend anybody but I think too many Americans are going to buy into the Republican rhetoric. It saddens me to think so but between the "my freinds" and people actually buying into the Palin V.P. farce, you guys are fucked.

Don't worry though, we'll take you.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 7, 2008 10:59 PM

Lainey/Stella - this astounds me. I just don't get it, but I guess I'm not meant to.

I am very close to tears.

The only consolation in Canada is that generally speaking, the Liberals and Conservatives can only get away with a few degrees of change on either side of centre...so while I don't want the yahoo that's leading the Conservatives as my PM, at least he won't fundamentally change the way the country is run...he wouldn't be allowed. Doesn't seem to work that way in the States.

Posted by: kalafraja at October 7, 2008 11:01 PM

Once again, this is Canada, we have tax funded universal health care. We're doing fine.

Perhaps if America diverted some of the military funding I'm sure you could afford it.

If this was a football game,

McCain 12
Obama 19

After a rough first half, Obama began using McCain's vaunted strengths against him. Obama was ahead for only 40 percent of the debate, but he's the only one that scored a touchdown. Each team had a fumble and Brokaw made a bad officiating decision when he asked that Manhattan Project versus Silicon Valley competitive business question and then didn't even think about asking Obama. It was a good question if badly worded. McCain had a brief rally on his comments on Russia, but Obama was in control for the last 40 minutes of the debate. The last play of the game, Obama kneeled it and took his sweet smooth time allowing all the people who just came to see what the quaterback looks like under pressure to get their vote's worth. Barry's got ground game. Barry can run. McCain's town hall didn't get him a win. You think MC wants that Pakistan question back?

This is good since, despite lying about more things in that first debate, it was my impression McCain won in Oxford. Debate 2 went to Obama by a larger margin.

Posted by: Jackseppelin at October 7, 2008 11:07 PM

I mean this, and I am truly serious, with all due respect, but do you think John McCain would be happier if we just let him lose with a machine gun and some grenades? If we all said, "Damn, John McCain, that is some ballsy shit!" and then let him go to war by himself? I have always gotten the feeling that Obama wants to help me be a better person in a better country, and I get the feeling that McCain wants to get shot in the face so that I might one day avenge him.

REPEAT! I DO NOT WANT JOHN MCCAIN TO GET SHOT!

My argument would be that anyone who dies for lack of simple healthcare represents an entire life's worth of a drain on resources, and in the long run it works out better for everyone if all the people in a given society are healthier and happier and better able to work.

of course, I support a system of government that is as heavily socialized as is possible while still retaining capitalism, and working for society as a whole should take precedence over working for yourself, though there's no reason for these to be mutually exclusive goals.

Silence Canuck. We should have cut you up into states long ago. The reward for our fecklessness will be our becoming your next precint, I mean province, I mean, well you know what I mean. I had better brush up on my Canadian, I mean French, I mean Quebequoise, oh wait ... you guys aren't monolingual.

Wow PaddyDog, way to show you know nothing about Obama's plan.

Part of the Federal budget will go to a newly created independent bank that pertains specifically to infrastructure and will fund new and ongoing projects which is expected to create around 2 million new jobs and stimulate about $35 billion a year.

Silver lining:

I can't fucking wait for this week's Eloquence.

Posted by: Jerce at October 8, 2008 12:07 AM

Okay, was it just me, or did anyone else hear Brokaw bitching about the candidates not sticking to the format? I swear while they were showing the Obamas and the McCains shaking hands, I could hear Brokaw muttering stuff like "I wish I had a trapdoor...it's 2 minutes...!" I can't remember the rest. Maybe I'm just imagining things as a means of avoiding this paper I'm supposed to be writing.

"Admin11 - I could NOT agree with you more. Why does the US get to do what it wants, and Iran/N. Korea/anywhere the fuck else can't??? Who appointed them sheriff, judge and jury? Why?? WHY??? It frustrates me to no end, this sense of entitlement, this sense of being the moral barometer of the world. This very thing keeps me awake at night. Seriously. This is why the world is in the state it's in right now, and it's terrifying."

/pedant
American exceptionalism derives from the revolution. Instead of just happening to grow up somewhere and be of the same kinship group, Americans left a nation that would not allow them to do as they liked and moved somewhere where there was supposed to be enough room for everybody to do their own thing for all eternity. Then they ran out of room.

Posted by: Farfalina at October 8, 2008 12:27 AM

ALSO, Hello McCain - there's a lot of other nations in Afghanistan! We lose soldiers every week. So fuck off with this white man's burden bullshit.

Posted by: Farfalina at October 8, 2008 12:29 AM

farfalina

well said, but one would think that an entire country would be enough room to do what you want. My point is that no nation should be able to do what they want on a global or cross country basis. Indeed this is one of the principle arguments that the United States seems to make when enforcing their own policies on other countries.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 8, 2008 12:56 AM

Will all of you please just move to Canada or Europe or somewhere other than here? The whining and sniveling is just too much.

Sadly I think that the election is won now and Obama will take it. Honestly, I think I may just give him my vote, too. It will get so bad in the next four years with a Democrat congress and president that America just might learn something.

Posted by: Ganesh at October 8, 2008 12:57 AM

Ganesh,

I love that idea. Could you spread the word? Maybe get more people to vote for him instead of McCain? Ya know, for the sake of learning and all..

I cringed every time McCain said "my friends." The folksy stuff doesn't impress me.

Does anyone here live in a town where there are "Joe Six Packs"? Can anyone tell me whether people will actually vote for McCain/Palin?

Posted by: kalafraja at October 7, 2008 10:37 PM

Memebers of my family, who don't like change, are hooked into FoxNews like junkies, and whose outlooks remain stuck in 1962. They'll vote McCain/Palin. I'm the token Democrat and progressive of the family.

It's exhausting.

Posted by: Foucault's banana at October 8, 2008 1:37 AM

I know Joe Six Pack. He lives up the hall and smells a bit. He helped me carry my couch in and let me borrow his rip saw. He looks like Jackie Gleason's drunk retarded cousin with coke bottle glasses and a heat rash with sausage drips and pit stains on his whitey. Mrs. Six Pack is always yelling at him in her circus tent moo-moo with a cigarette dangling from her cake hole.

I saw the Comish of the More Taste League over at his house a few weeks back, must have picked up the wrong beer.

Posted by: bucslim at October 8, 2008 8:42 AM

Either that or the Comish was going to do us all a favor and slaughter the Six Packs, and have his way with the "hot, but not yet trashy" Teeny Bopper Six Pack.

Then again, I always imagine Dr. Cox from Scrubs quitting the Doctoring profession to wreck havoc on society. (And I haven't even had my coffee yet.)

I noticed McCain kept saying "a cool hand on the tiller", can someone out in pajibaland tell me what the fuck is a tiller?

Posted by: Pookie at October 8, 2008 9:33 AM

Alex: I don't know what thread you're following but I was responding to Lee who said taxes were the same as robbery. I'm all for Obama's plan (and I have not only read it in detail, I have explained it to potential voters when I canvass them). In fact I want him to tax the uppper tax bracket event more (and yes, I am in that bracket myself).

Posted by: PaddyDog at October 8, 2008 10:09 AM

Favorite moment from last night: McCain claiming he could reach across the aisle to Democrats ("I've got a record of that"), then a few minutes later saying, "I've taken on my party before. Sometimes I'm not too popular in my party, let alone with the Democrats." Jesus Christ, John, which is it? You know how to build bipartisan support, or everybody in both parties hates you?

Posted by: Todd at October 8, 2008 10:14 AM

Pookie - a tiller refers to a rototiller, which is an implement used to turn soil. Basically, it's used in gardening/farming to mix up soil before seeds/bulbs are planted.

So...he will have a relaxed and steady hand on the machine that will disturb the surface...destroy the status quo in anticipation of starting over?

Posted by: kalafraja at October 8, 2008 10:20 AM

I haven't heard a single non-American (primarily Australian, but encompassing a few other nationalities as well) express hope that McCain will get into office. What's with that?

Posted by: Chugga

I know I'm late for this discussion, but I'd still like to give my opinion on the subject.

Personally, I think Democrats in general appear more compassionate than Republicans. When you read about Republicans or watch them on TV or a documentary they all seem very xenophobic. Which is a big contradiction, if you consider how often they speak of the United States as "the land of opportunity" for people all over the world, yet as soon as we get there they wanna kick us out for taking their jobs.

Democrats also seem to be more in tune with what's going on in the world, and I don't mean just daily events or wars, I'm talking about how they seem to understand other realities. Republicans don't seem very interested in other cultures, and they seem to be guided by the usual stereotypes.

I know this may sound like a silly example, but I think it illustrates one of my points. I met a Republican lady earlier this year, and after we were introduced she immediately asked me where I was from. "I'm Chilean," I replied. Her immediate response was "but you're whiter than everyone else." I kind of blinked in confusion, and then I said, "Well, Chile was a colony. Just like the United States." This isn't an isolated example; I've had it happen to me several times before. When did some people forget that the American continent was populated by natives before Columbus got here, and that Europeans came here and started new lives here, and that some of them reproduced with natives and some didn't?

I've never had a Democrat or liberal ask me why my sister is blonde and has blue eyes. It's not an issue for them. It seems to be one for Republicans. They appear to be so confused when someone doesn't fit into their pre-conceived notions of whatever.

Another point is that Republicans seem too eager in making everyone in their country feel like they're the best of the best. I respect Americans and I love me some Pajibans, but I don't think they're better than anyone else. We're all just people, you know? Democrats know things have to change, and that there's always room for improvement.

So yeah, those are my two pesos.

Posted by: Sofía at October 8, 2008 10:34 AM

@Pookie & kalafraja:

"firm hand on the tiller" is NOT about rototillers (though that did describe what the repugs are doing to our constitution).

a tiller is the long piece of wood attached to a boat's rudder that allows you to steer.

a firm hand on the tiller is needed to steer the ship of state in stormy, perilous times.

yes, I read too much.

Posted by: Walter at October 8, 2008 10:50 AM

@ Walter - okay, that makes more sense...because I was absolutely thinking of a tiller as in a rototiller, and I thought it was a rather weird metaphor.

Must be my hick roots coming through, rather than my sea faring ones.

Posted by: kalafraja at October 8, 2008 11:38 AM

Thank you Walter, so I guess I got a tiller in my pants then.

Tee hee. Is the machine...in his pants?

Posted by: Farfalina at October 8, 2008 12:18 PM

Is the purpose of a metaphor not missed when people don't understand what it means? I'm guessing that those of a certain generation might understand this one, but I doubt that Mr. Six Pack is a literary scholar such as Walter!

Posted by: kalafraja at October 8, 2008 1:00 PM

You forget Kalafraja that many Joe Sixpacks love them some bass fishin' so they probably got the metaphor just fine.

I work in a liberal town (Ann Arbor, Michigan) and live near Jackson (which purports to be the birthplace of the Republican party, hence the perpetual night, constant hellfire and rain of frogs that plagues the town). No one in Ann Arbor ever votes Republican; there are still "Impeach Bush" signs up everywhere along with "Obama/Biden." A lot of people in this town work in research, and a lot of people lost jobs when funding was drastically cut in every area after Bush took office. So at work I'm surrounded by people who don't need to be convinced that Republicans don't have a clue on how to run the country.

Where I live, it's always been the opposite, and goddamn, I'm sick of people taking down my Democratic signs. I don't give a fuck if you don't like my views, this is America, and I'm allowed to express them. Sure, the McCain/Palin sign I have to drive by every day makes my soul shrivel up and die just a bit more, but hell, it's a free country, and you have the right to make whatever dumbass choice you want.

But you know what? That's the ONLY McCain sign I've seen around town, and Obama signs are blooming everywhere. There's hope, people, there's hope!
