The Next Selection in the Pajiba Movie Club Is ...

Pajiba Movie Club / Dustin Rowles

Miscellaneous | November 3, 2009 | Comments (23)

The Pajiba Movie Club is kicking along fairly well now, despite the fact that the last two movies have been foreign or from the ’60s. For our next choice, we’re going to go with something a little more out there: David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive as suggested by Yosarrian, who came up with the Movie Club idea in the first place.

It’s not available on instant Netflix, so you’ll have to get it the old-fashioned way this time (through regular Netflix). It’s a great movie for discussion, and one of the major questions we can all discuss is this: What the fuck is going on?

Whatever it is, it makes me happy in the pants. And then shameful. So very shameful.

We’re going to move the time again, as we continue to try out different time slots. Tuesday nights are otherwise slow around here, so we’re going to keep it there. And because Tuesday nights are just downright awful for television, we’re going to try it out in the evening again. It’s an After Dark kind of movie, anyway. So, mark it: Tuesday, November 17, at 9 p.m.

We’ll see you back here.

Oh, good! Maybe somebody can finally explain the damn thing to me. I'll see you on the 17th. I'll be the one running around the room yelling "What the fuck?!"

Woot! Woot!

And, yes, what the fuck is going on and isn't Naomi Watts awesome?

I can think of a one or two specific scenes that I will be studying very closely for this Club selection.

Ooh, great choice. I think we actually have this one... I'll have to make some time in my Cannonball schedule to watch it!

Oh this movie was killer. I'd like to suggest another one. "Rory O'Shea -- Inside I'm Dancing" I just got done watching it on Netflix (it's on instant play) and it was a great flick. I might be biased, since James McAvoy is in it and I'd like to do unspeakable thing to him, but I felt it was honest and real and touching.

HappyPants McShame is my nom de plume.

Never seen the movie. Other D Lynch movies had made my eyes cross.
Those two gals up there in the photo seem to be having a nice time though.
Maybe I should reconsider a viewing.

@ Emiry: Thank you! I knew there was a JM flick I'd heard about a few
months back, but had neglected to put on the list.

Emiry
I love that movie. It made me cry all over the place but then I was happy. It was confusing.

Hey, pretty girl. Time to wake up

I don't think there is any one right way to interpret everything that goes on in this movie, so I'm really curious to see what everyone brings to the discussion. And even if you find the movie as a whole to be frustrating and unwatchable you should still be able to find certain scenes that you enjoy the hell out of. Lynch doesn't always make the most coherent movies but he is responsible for some of the most vivid and evocative scenes ever to be seared into my mind.

A friend of mine wrote an essay on this film once, and I think he did a pretty good job of interpreting Lynch's meaning throughout much of the film. It was partially a point-by-point response to "David Lynch's 10 Clues to Unlocking This Thriller" that were included in the DVD jacket, and I think there were some other elements in there as well. If I can get a hold of it and share some of his insights, I will.

Ooh, good choice, Yossarian. Hopefully school and life won't keep me from re-watching this one, like they did with Let the Right One In...

Let the pretentia begin

OH MY GOD GREAT CHOICE. Seriously one of my very favorite films. It's so dense and well-done and Naomi Watts is so undeniably the shit in it. I will be here armed with mad analytical skillz.

Ooh I love this movie, what a great excuse to see it again. Thank you Yossarian.

Posted by: Cindy at November 3, 2009 7:15 PM

Great pick! I'm getting excited to rewatch and discuss this movie. I think it will be fun to see everyone's ideas and interpretations.

Posted by: bubblegumshoe at November 3, 2009 8:03 PM

YES! (and it's ALREADY in the dvd player in the other room!)

this should be good.

Posted by: gp at November 3, 2009 8:03 PM

Yay! My favorite Lynch movie.

Posted by: Mebe at November 3, 2009 8:27 PM

Will they be showing it on the tv's at Ruskis?

Posted by: El L Cool J at November 3, 2009 8:41 PM

On that one recent Seriously Random List of "great movies you'd never want to see again," I listed this one! This film is so fucking weird...in a good way. Can't wait for this. Thanks, Yossarian.

Who cares!!! My boyfriend also agrees with me. He is 10 years older than me, lol. We met online at age-gap club -- http://AgelessMeet.COM/. Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.

I needed an excuse to watch this one again. It's been years since I saw it last. "Something bit me real bad!" still plays in my head. Also...the back alley scene (shuddering!).

Posted by: gunnertec at November 4, 2009 8:06 AM

When Jimmy Barrett has his moment in the parking lot, I must admit I peed a little.

Additionally, tiny grinning old people = scare-city, population me.

Its hard to differenciate reality and fantasy in this movie and you're always wondering whats going on, but Naomi Watts performance alone is worth a watch, hell just the difference between her two scene readings is worth the view.
