Before we kick off today’s box-office contest, I need to belatedly announce the winner of a previous contest to provide a T-Shirt Slogan for TWoP fan last month for a a race she’s running called The Warrior Dash. TWoP fan selected these winners.

3. “Picked last in gym class.” —Shu Shu Fontana

2. “Run like you stole something.” —phaedawg

1. D*A*S*H (With an illustration of Alan Alda wearing an exercise headband.) —Caroline

Caroline said that she’d submit the Alda illustration if she won; she has. So, if you’d like, email me the illustration, and I will create a shirt from it for you. And best of luck to TWoP Fan in her upcoming race.

****

You don’t get too many weekends like the one upcoming one, where there are three notable films that have three different target audiences: The Expendables (Men), Eat, Pray, Love (Women), and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Geeks). Whatever the result at the box-office, it’s likely to be something that’s discussed and hashed over by studio marketing teams for months. All three films are tracking well with their demographic, so it should provide a decent gauge of the relative strength of each demographic. Also, it’s kind of fun for the box-office wonks.

So, for today’s contest, I invite all of you to be box-office wonks. I have some fairly decent guesses, but I don’t really know who is going to win the box-office contest. I’m rooting for the geeks, if only so that Edgar Wright can find the mainstream success he deserves, but I can honestly envision any of the three winning, and seeing one or two of them possibly falling on their asses. (I’d root harder for the geeks if Jason Statham replaced Michael Cera in Scott Pilgrim).

The contest is this: Predict the box-office totals for each of the three movies for this weekend only. Whoever comes closest with their prediction of the top five will win your choice of Edgar Wright, Julia Roberts, or Jason Statham DVD ($25 max).

Predictions should be put in this format:

1. Eat Pray Love: $102 million
2. Scott Pilgrim: $99.2 million
3. Expendables: $89.9 million

Predictions made after 6 p.m. EST on Friday, August 13th, will not count.

Don't movies targeted at the ladies tend not to do so well in the summer? Those usually do better in the spring and fall, if my horrible memory is to be trusted...

1. Scott Pilgrim: $50 million.
2. The Expendables: $37 million.
3. Eat, Pray, Love: $28 million.

Perhaps some wishful thinking, but you have to remember that kids going to the movies this weekend probably don't give a flying furchtbar about Rambo, Ivan Drago, the guy from Lethal Weapon 4, or the Guvernator. They do, however, love Michael Cera and bright, flashy things.

When playing this game, always take into account a movie's running time. The shorter the movie, the more showings it can generate and the more tickets it can sell.

The Expendables (103 min)
Scott Pilgrim (113 min)
Eat Pray Love (133 min)

That's a whole half-hour more of Eat Pray Love than there's of The Expendables! That will factor into the equation. Given that:

1. The Expendables: $42 million
2. Eat, Pray, Love: $29 million
3. Scott Pilgrim: $19 million

I'm sorry but I'm not seeing where people are getting the Scott Pilgrim love. It's a movie directed by a director that is not known beyond geek circles, starring a guy whose last 3 movies did no business (Year One, Youth in Revolt, Paper Heart), with a highbrow concept based on an obscure comic book.

The last movie to fit that description? Kick-Ass, which made $19 mil in its opening weekend.

Eat Pray Love - 43.6 million
The Expendables - 28.2 million
Scott Pilgram - 14 million

I will be seeing both Expendables and SP but i dont know that they will preform as well as they should/are expected.

Posted by: Gilp at August 12, 2010 7:26 PM

Ok, FTW . . .

Eat, Pray, Love: $22.5M
Scott Pilgrim: $14.2M
The Expendables: $23.2M

I think there are enough sad, lonely housewives and unmarried women who read that stupid book to actually want to spend money on seeing the movie, but not enough to take it into record territory.

I expect "Pilgrim" to kind of bomb because Michael Cera is in it and that's just what his movies do.

I'm thinking "The Expendables" will win by a couple of bucks just because there are tons of 40 year old men who remember these really old action stars and want to see them again.

So, what are the prizes again?

Posted by: mslewis at August 12, 2010 7:41 PM

Wait. DAMMIT. I went for totals too. Can I change mine?

1. Eat, Pray, Love: $ 56.5 million
2. The Expendables: $ 40 million
3. Scott Pilgrim: $ 12 million

Posted by: figgy at August 12, 2010 7:59 PM

I'm sure that at least one of these movies will either exceed my expectations or wind up well below them, but here's a fairly safe estimate in my view:

1. The Expendables- $35 million
2. Eat, Pray, Love- $32 million
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World- $21 million

Even if my numbers are off, I feel fairly certain that this is how these movies will place in the box office rankings this weekend. Although I have been wrong about these things before. . .

Posted by: Rykker at August 12, 2010 8:24 PM

Scott Pilgrim vs The World - $36 Million
The Expendables - $30 Million
Eat, Pray, Love - $19 Million

Against my better judgment, I'm picking Scott Pilgrim to be the top flick over The Expendables. It should pull in the geeks and the teens who are looking for a date movie. The Expendables will come in second as the event movie of the summer (I think, in the long run, it makes more money than Scott Pilgrim). No one - male OR female - that I know seems to know or care about Julia Roberts or Eat, Pray, Love.

Posted by: David at August 12, 2010 8:35 PM

1. Expendables - $32.5 million
2. Eat Prey, Love - $24 million
2. Scott Pilgrim - $19 million

Posted by: Blair at August 12, 2010 8:47 PM

Eat Pray Love - $35 Million
- People love Julia Roberts for some reason.

The Expendables - $29 Million
- It has every action hero, but is it enough to convince people to come out to see it? It's an event, but one people can see on DVD and feel like they haven't missed anything.

Scott Pilgrim - $23 Million
- If I remember the write up on KickAss's success, geeks represent a small portion of the movie going public. Plus I watched it last night with some of my co-workers. They didn't get it (since they're not nerds) and didn't have a good time.

Word of mouth might not be too kind to this movie, except for those who enjoy the giant nerdfest Scott Pilgrim is. But again, DVD. I do see some sort of cult forming, much like the same cult who follows Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright around already.

Posted by: Doric at August 12, 2010 9:05 PM

This is gonna be a CLOSE ONE. I'll try not to let my personal prejudice get in the way. The question is...are Women that despearte to see movies?

Eat, Pray, Love: $36 Million

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: $33.2 Million

The Expendables: $24.5 Million

There's no way those numbers are real. GOOD LUCK ME!

Eat, Pray, Love - $45 mil.
Scott Pilgrim - $36 mil.
The Expendables - $28 mil.

Eat, Pray, Love has "bored housewife" and "undiscerning moviegoers" written all over it. Scott Pilgrim will have a relatively strong opening, stronger than Kick-Ass, I think, because it's got fairly good reviews, a star that people at least recognize, and it isn't called "Kick-Ass" (probably a bigger factor than we'd like to think). The Expendables...I dunno. I have a gut feeling that it's not gonna do so hot.

Fredo and Bill

I used to have similar problems until I switched to Firefox and installed the free Adblock Plus extension on both my Mac and PC. With a few simple configuration steps, Internet life has been bliss (well, ad absence-wise) since then. No more ad-induced rape.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at August 13, 2010 12:26 AM

Thanks for the tip, Fredo. Unfortunately, I tried Firefox about 2 yrs ago, and it started taking over ALL my apps, including the Explorer browser and ALL of my porn downloads, to which after that, one by one started being deleted from my files - if I hadn't just learned about backup discs, I'd eventually have lost a lot more before a virus destroyed my last hard drive (not blaming Firefox for that mind you, just that I'll put up with an annoying pop-up on this site rather than take any more action other than sighing very grumpingly and pissed off-like).
