Holiday Movie Open Thread

Miscellaneous | December 29, 2008 | Comments (110)

Hey Folks —

Since we’re still on a light posting schedule this week, and because some of you need a place to spleen during the holidays, here’s a Holiday movie open thread. If you’ve seen any of the holiday releases, feel free to offer up your opinions on either the movie(s) or our review(s). Or, you could just skip the small talk and start in on random topics that have absolutely nothing to do with movies. I’m sure that’s where you’ll end up. But, before you get there, here are links to our reviews of the major holiday releases and the big awards contenders this season.

Marley and Me
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Bedtime Stories
Valkyrie
Yes Man
Seven Pounds
The Spirit
Doubt
Slumdog Millionaire
Gran Torino
Milk
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
The Wrestler
Wendy and Lucy

The Year In Review Part 5 | Yes Man Review

I've nothing to say about these films, just a belated Christmas wish: Instead of all this mess, can't we just have a theatrical re-release of Scrooged? Please?

Posted by: Clee Shay at December 29, 2008 2:06 PM

so far all I've seen was Milk. And that's about it. Sure, the Wrestler and Slumdog will end up in front of my eyes at some point, but for the most part this holiday season has been boring treacle after cloying blocks of sweaty cheddar cheese. (Well, and I saw Doubt and Froxt/Nixon on Broadway, so, Suck It, Hollywood).

Posted by: Withnail at December 29, 2008 2:08 PM

i second that clee. my favorite of all time is scrooged.

Posted by: pabs at December 29, 2008 2:09 PM

The last film I saw in the theater was Quantum of Solace. That kind of disqualifies me for this thread but I'mma post anyway.

Posted by: Snath at December 29, 2008 2:10 PM

I haven't seen a movie in the theater since...Tell No One? Back in...September? I think. I don't know, my brain is still on vacation.

Thirded, pabs. One of the greatest joys during the holiday season is watching Carol Kane get all toaster slappy with Frank Cross.

Posted by: Julie at December 29, 2008 2:12 PM

I haven't set foot in a theater in a really really long time. Maybe since Dark Knight but don't quote me on that. I'm broke, and $10 for a movie ticket when I know my dad's just gonna get it on Netflix in a month or two isn't really a justifiable expense for me. $16 eyeshadow, on the other hand, is totally necessary.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at December 29, 2008 2:15 PM

I'll post something not related to anything because a) I'm annoyed to be back at work and b) because I haven't seen any of these movies and probably won't until they're released on DVD. Maybe Slumdog Millionare.

Has anyone received their WBNS shirt yet? I'm *dying* to get mine because I am a GIANT baby and I want it now. Seriously. It's been like 5 or 6 weeks or something. I need it. Now. Instant gratification. Gimmee. Want. NOW.

Whew, thanks, I feel better now that I got that out.

Posted by: Lainey at December 29, 2008 2:15 PM

I got mine, Lainey - it's way more absorbent than a ShamWow, and it makes a great tourniquet to boot!

Posted by: Skitz at December 29, 2008 2:19 PM

SPOILERS

wendy and lucy : disappointing. i love slow, quiet, depressing movies AND dogs, but this one had too many plot holes and mistakes for my taste. basically, i never believed that she even liked the dog. how could she leave her in the end, without even talking to the home owners and arranging a return? i understood why she left, but it made no sense that she didn't knock on the door, explain her situation and fill them in on her plans to make some money and return for lucy. as a dog lover, i would never just ditch my dog with total strangers and hope to the air that he'd be there when i got back. also, she was stupid. why did she shoplift an 80 cent can of dog food when she had a wad of cash in her pocket?

slumdog millionaire: fun and original, but would have been even better had it avoided a couple of hollywood traps.

happy-go-lucky: fantastic. only mike leigh can get me to enjoy spending so much time with such an annoying protagonist. he's able to do it in almost every film. one of the top living filmmakers keeps making interesting and unique films.

i've loved you so long: going to see it wednesday... will get back to you.

Posted by: celery at December 29, 2008 2:21 PM

I still don't know what a ShamWow is. Don't tell me! I'd like to go through life not knowing what that product is, having never seen a second of The Hills, and never eaten a Top Ramen noodle.

These are my lofty lofty goals.

Posted by: Julie at December 29, 2008 2:27 PM

This is nice and all, but where is the review of "Enter the Dragon?"

Posted by: Pookie at December 29, 2008 2:29 PM

The last movie I saw was... Twilight. I am suitably ashamed.

I'm really interested in both Revolutionary Road and Pajiba's take on it... any idea when we can expect it?

Happy between-Christmas-and-New-Years', everyone!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at December 29, 2008 2:30 PM

I'm going to see Doubt tonight, I think. I love being on break!

And a definite NO to Marley and Me. Besides the retardation that is Wilson and Aniston, I've been told the dog dies. I don't watch movies where that happens, there's only so much public weeping I can do in a day. I don't even watch the end of Turner and Hooch, I just let it go to a certain point and then scream "They ALL lived happily ever after. They did!!!!"

Posted by: Sharon at December 29, 2008 2:31 PM

All I'll say, Julie, is that ShamWow is sold by a very creepy squinty troll man with a headset microphone on his head for no reason. He looks like he's shilling for ShamWow and McDonalds at the same time.

Posted by: Snath at December 29, 2008 2:36 PM

Every time I'm up late at night, I'm tempted to buy a ShamWow. I'm entranced by that thing at 4 am. I felt the same way about the Magic Bullet (the food chopping thing, not the vibrator).

Posted by: Sharon at December 29, 2008 2:38 PM

I spent Christmas day in a youth hostel in Amsterdam, and in the morning after smoking a whole lot of LEGAL hash, we settled down around the hostel tv and watched Memento. Not the most festive movie, but within the first 15 minutes of the movie we had gone from my friend and I to about 15 random people who decided it was a great way to spend 2 hours of their Christmas.

Anybody else have any movies that have NOTHING to do with Christmas, but that you like to watch around Christmas-time?

Posted by: Nikki at December 29, 2008 2:41 PM

I always think that the Magic Bullet on tv is about the vibrator, Sharon. Because I have issues.

Oooo, totally off topic, I got the BEST present from my aunt: Holy Toast! Yes kids, now you too can spread butter all over the virgin Mary's face like the dirty girl she is.

http://www.perpetualkid.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1585

Posted by: Julie at December 29, 2008 2:42 PM

The last movie I saw in a theater was... There Will Be Blood. Holy shit, I really don't go to the movies ever. That was last December.

Movies up there I kind of want to see: Slumdog Millionaire, which I'll probably think was overrated, Milk, and Frost/Nixon.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 29, 2008 2:45 PM

Sharon, the ShamWow is sold at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I saw it when I was Christmas shopping.

Jules, I am so posting it to your Facebook.

Posted by: Melody at December 29, 2008 2:47 PM

Julie, your aunt is awesome. That might just be the best website of my life.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at December 29, 2008 2:47 PM

Oh Julie, that is awesome.
My girlfriend asked me one year if I wanted a Magic Bullet and I was like "Hell yeah!" And then she said she I could make alfredo sauce with it and I wondered if that was a euphemism I hadn't heard yet.

Posted by: Sharon at December 29, 2008 2:48 PM

Melody, don't tell me that. If I know it's actually within driving distance, I might succumb to the temptation and buy it. It needs to stay on tv where I can't get it.

Posted by: Sharon at December 29, 2008 2:50 PM

The ShamWOW commercial stops me every time at the point the strange creepy guy with a twisted troll face says "it's made in Germany; now, you know the Germans make good stuff", and I know he means Mercedes and those expensive knives, but I get this voice in my head that says "yeah... uniforms, National Socialism, and invasions of Poland; good stuff", and I can't hear the rest of the ad over the high-pitched screaming in my head.

I think it's good for soaking up bloodstains, though. And that's a happy holiday for me, right there.

Posted by: elsworthy at December 29, 2008 2:51 PM

That is faboo! They should make dozens of these things, so I can put butter on anyone I want.

Karl Rove? Buttered.

George Clinton? Put jelly on that funky mother.

Kayne West? Orange Preserves.

Spaulding Grey likes his toast dry, thank you very much.

Oh, think of the possibilities!

Posted by: Withnail at December 29, 2008 2:51 PM

DON'T YOU DO IT MELODY!!

she said she I could make alfredo sauce with it and I wondered if that was a euphemism I hadn't heard yet.

Sharon, that made me laugh SO HARD.

AvB, she gave it to me at Christmas and then warned me not to show it to my Pop Pop. Yeah, like I'm going to show a sacrelicious toast stamp to the 84 year-old who goes to church every day. Heh.

Posted by: Julie at December 29, 2008 2:51 PM

Ha! Julie, that's a great gift. I love things that border on sacrilege. A few years ago my mom got me an ashtray with a really sad looking Jesus gazing soufully up at you and it says 'Jesus hates it when you smoke'. I died laughing.

Posted by: Jeni at December 29, 2008 2:52 PM

HAHAHAHA!!!

Done!

Posted by: Melody at December 29, 2008 2:52 PM

Marley and Me - Never in a million years, I'll read the book.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - I really want to see it. Sorry, it just looks like my type of movie: eerily fairy tale like, with a hint of actual gravity.

Bedtime Stories - I addressed this in another post, "20th Century Fox can eat shit from the same trough as Adam Sandler" if they think I'm seeing this or Marley.

Valkyrie - Tom Cruise aside, it looks good. Definitely want to see it.

Yes Man - Shut up, it looked decent enough. Besides, I'd rather sit through a movie like this than The Number 23 all over again. Though, I wish Jim Carrey would get more Capra-esque/exceedingly good Biopics to work with. Jim, you should have been in Phone Booth as originally planned.

The Spirit - a friend of mine helped me decide on this one when he said, "It was the worst fucking movie I've ever seen in my life", and responded to my mentioning the possibility of renting it, "Don't do it Mike, you'll be suicidal."

Doubt - Looks good, but it's suffers from "Hotel Rwanda" syndrome...you have to be in the right mood to watch it. Though, the future Ms. Mike R. will probably suggest we see it, and I'll say yes because I cave that easily with people I really like/adore.

Slumdog Millionaire - Really want to see this, mostly because Danny Boyle is God!

Seven Pounds/Gran Torino/Milk - All three awards fodder, all three will probably hit my eyes either on DVD or at the AMC Best Picture Showcase.

Frost/Nixon - YES! I'm a Poli Sci Geek, I really liked "The Queen", Michael Sheen and Frank Langella are damn good actors, and any historical film that gets not only my father and I, but also my 16 and 14 year old brothers hyped to see it is worth the money IN SPADES!

The Reader - Another piece of Mike R./Future Ms. Mike R. catnip. It looks good, she read the book, I want to read the book, I have had a crush on Kate Winslet ever since Titanic (which is oddly how long I've known Future Ms. Mike R.), and Ralph Fiennes fascinates me. Automatic yes.

The Wrestler - I've never been properly introduced to an Aronofsky film, however I doubt this will be the one to do it. I mean it looks great, but it's not an "Ass in Seat" experience.

Wendy and Lucy - Didn't even know it existed until today...and I cared about it as much then as I do now.

Posted by: Mike R. at December 29, 2008 2:56 PM

Hee, Jeni, me too. I used to have a horribly evil set of magnets that was a dress up Jesus with various clothing. My favorite combination was a tutu, devil's horns, and bunny slippers.

Posted by: Julie at December 29, 2008 3:00 PM

Elsworthy, I think that's EE worthy stuff right there. You had me at "invasions of Poland...good stuff".

Posted by: Mike R. at December 29, 2008 3:03 PM

I want that holy toast stamp, and I don't even eat toast. I guess I could stamp the bread I use in my tuna sandwiches. I feel like there's a joke in there, about having Jesus's face all up in some strong-smelling fish, but I'm really not good at those kinds of things.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 29, 2008 3:04 PM

I wondered if that was a euphemism I hadn't heard yet

Man that was hard to hold in. It was either pained silence or horrifying cackling sounds.

Posted by: Jay at December 29, 2008 3:07 PM

When I'm rich and famous I'm going to buy a theatre and play Wall-E on a continuous loop, like Walt Disney wanted to do with Fantasia. People can stop in at any point, free of charge. I watched that movie twice this weekend, and it was amazing both times. That's my recommendation.

Also, I received a jolly-roger pirate toast stamp for my religious holiday festival, and it has proven highly useful. According to the package, it's for people who like their toast "charrrrrred."

Posted by: james. at December 29, 2008 3:13 PM

Mike R: Thank you. I wish I were saying it just for that reason, but sadly, it's true. The blood did come up very nicely, though, so now I have two ShamWows.

Posted by: elsworthy at December 29, 2008 3:13 PM

Clee Shay, the indie theatre here in Orlando played Scrooged at their monthly Movies on the Lawn event. Perfect weather, lots of friends, three (or four!) bottles of wine, and Bill Murray. Awesome...

I saw Valkyrie on Christmas. The entire theatre giggled their way through it. It was a good story, but Tom Cruise took me out of it every single time. Also, there was this asshole sitting near me who kept answering his cell phone. I finally turned to him and said "Are you fucking kidding me?" He got the point and stepped outside. I didn't even have to pull out my gun. That guy in Philly was an amateur...

Posted by: Trouble at December 29, 2008 3:21 PM

Scrooged is absolutely a fave, and I didn't see it on anywhere over the holidays! Carol Kane dressed as the Tooth Fairy beating the Bejeebus out of Bill Murray? Stapling antlers on mice? It don't get no better than that.

Nikki, movies I like to watch this time of year that have very little or nothing to do with Christmas include:

1) Better Off Dead

2) Young Sherlock Holmes

3) Die Hard

4) and, others I can't think of at work for fear my boss will see me....

Posted by: dammitjanet at December 29, 2008 3:35 PM

oh, and I REFUSE to see "Marley & Me" cuz I hate schmalt, and Aniston

Posted by: dammitjanet at December 29, 2008 3:36 PM

Ok, I haven't seen a movie in a theater since...shit, Harold & Kumar 2. Wow. I wanted to see W, but I forgot about it; there was so little press.

I would love to see Happy Go Lucky & Slumdog Millionaire. The rest I can ditch.

Posted by: Brie at December 29, 2008 3:38 PM

Sometimes I think my entire wardrobe should be made out of ShamWow.

Posted by: TK at December 29, 2008 3:43 PM

I watched "Borat" on DVD with my family on Christmas day 1) because my mom LOVES it and 2) because there's nothing my family likes to do more than laugh, preferably together. Yes, my family is AWESOME (don't hate, we're still dysfunctional -- we just like/love each other regardless).

Posted by: jimbob at December 29, 2008 4:03 PM

Welcome Back Ms.DammitJanet! :) I have to second the "Young Sherlock Holmes" love. I bought it for my father upon his fond remembrances of the film, and minor remembrances of the bits and pieces I saw as a child. It was still as cool and wondrously screwed up as it was when I saw it as a kid. It's a shame there was never a proper sequel with Moriarty. (BBC, JUMP ON THIS SHIT! Just imagine a new Holmes franchise with the actual Young Sherlock Holmes and James Watson all grown up! It'd be the perfect Christmas franchise to run along with Wallace and Gromit and the Doctor Who Christmas Special!)

Posted by: Mike R. at December 29, 2008 4:08 PM

My first late night T.V. product fascination was the Flowbee. It is the original late night T.V. commercial product and absolutely opened the door for the ShamWOW. How can anyone resist "a refreshing vacuum haircut" using 800 max watts of suckage?...oops, I mean suction of course.

The Perpetual Kid site is great. From Jesus bandaids to the wonderful electro-torture your friends game/S&M device the "LIGHTNING REACTION REVENGE" it truly has something for everyone. http://www.perpetualkid.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2820

At one time, shortly after graduating from a Jesuit university, I had the dress-up magnetic Jesus along with a light switch cover of the Pope (guess where the switch was) and a wind-up nun that spit real sparks of fire! It all came to a predictibly sad end shortly after my new roommate moved in named Mary. She had five sisters all named Mary and they all went by Mary in combination with the initial of their middle name. I never did find all the pieces of the nun and I miss her more than my old roommate.

Posted by: Iwantsprinkles at December 29, 2008 4:12 PM

Posted by: Snath at December 29, 2008 2:36 PM

All I'll say, Julie, is that ShamWow is sold by a very creepy squinty troll man with a headset microphone on his head for no reason. He looks like he's shilling for ShamWow and McDonalds at the same time.

But Snath Vince the ShamWow guy is wearing a headset for a reason...because they were on a budget and couldn't afford a boom mike. Saving money on equipment so they can bring a bargain directly to you! Heck they can only afford operators for the next 20 minutes. They can't do this all day!

Posted by: krix at December 29, 2008 4:20 PM

My favorite Christmas tradition movie (with my parents anyway) is Young Frankenstein. Not sure how or why that happened. My mother likes to giggle and scream "Rroll, rroll, rroll in ze hay!"

Yeah, I didn't see Scrooged at all this year, and now I'm a little upset about that.

Posted by: Sharon at December 29, 2008 4:35 PM

Iwantsprinkles, were the Marys anything like Rosy Palm and her five sisters? Because if they were, I'm going to need headshots and their phone numbers.

Posted by: Snath at December 29, 2008 4:47 PM

Since Dustin is actually spending time with his real family, here's the poor man's box office roundup if anyone is still interested:

5) Yes Man ($16.6 million; $50 million)
4) Valkyrie ($21 million)
3) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ($26.8 million)
2) Bedtime Stories ($27.5 million)
1) Marley & Me ($36.4 million)

Posted by: branded at December 29, 2008 5:10 PM

-Benjamin Button: Beautiful and moving, and wholly depressing, though the pacing is a little disjointed at times and the framing story is a little common.

-Frost/Nixon: Frank Langella is fucking AMAZING as Nixon. If I wasn't such a big Heath Ledger fan, I'd say Langella has locked up Best Supporting Actor. That said, if Heath doesn't win, I'll be fucking pissed.

-Valkyrie: Surprisingly exciting and well-made. And Eddie Izzard was electric when he was on screen! I did not see that coming from him at all.

-Slumdog Millionaire: A very pleasant story, a wonderful blend of the American and Indian flavors. It's not Best Picture, but it's certainly wonderful to watch. The one big flaw was that whoever wrote the script didn't seem to know when to end it. There were about three lines too many in that last scene, haha.

This has been an interesting year for movies. I maintain that 2007 was much better as far as big Oscar-worthy films (it stands as the only year in my lifetime where I collected all of the Best Picture nominees on DVD and liked them all equally). But there were some great standouts. Hopefully the Oscars don't suck and Miley Cyrus doesn't touch gold.

Posted by: Audiosuede at December 29, 2008 5:25 PM

I saw "Doubt" this past weekend.(Good movie. I enjoyed it.) I hope to see "Benjamin Button," "Valkyrie," or (especially) "Slumdog Millionaire." Problem is Slumdog is playing on only one theater in town, and it's on the other side of the county. I'll still go. I'm stubborn like that.

Posted by: rlr260 at December 29, 2008 5:30 PM

Is anyone else having ads or something overriding the Back button?

(don't even say it. I'm at work)

Posted by: Jay at December 29, 2008 6:16 PM

You know I've twice succumbed to the late night infomercial dayglo. I'd like to kill the Mother Against Drunk Driving that reported to the credit bureaus my failure to pay for the freaking second and third years of a magazine I continued to receive. I told em I didn't want the damn rags and they told me it had been cancelled three times. It was a mess straightening things out. Let's just say that while I cannot condone drinking while driving(sans murdertank), I certainly cannot throw any enthusiasm in for Mothers against it.

The other time I dialed an Indian from India I got these things called GreenPan. I have not been happier with any other over the wire purchase. They really are fantastic pans.

I've seen Benjamin Button and the Spirit. Both were very meh. I saw io3 mention Speed Racer in the same sentence with Button. See it for the special effects. It ain't that great. The Spirit disappoints mostly because of the Nazi scene. And because it wasn't funny enough. And Scarlett isn't funny enough and all covered up. And because the special effects didn't enhance the story the way I feel they did in Sin City. And Samuel L. Jackson was given Mace Windu like powers again and it goes wasted again. And just the graphics in that movie Renaissance, I just kept thinking, why the fuck?

All I really want to see is Let The Right One In and The Wrestler. And Religulous too. Effing Texas.

Posted by: Jackseppelin at December 29, 2008 6:19 PM

Slumdog Millionaire is really great - it has nothing to do with the Christmas season but it put me in the best mood ever, which is what I need around the holidays (there are simply too many family members in my house right now for me to sustain cheer on my own). I also REALLY want to see The Wrestler but it probably isn't playing anywhere nearby...

Posted by: eat my shorts at December 29, 2008 6:32 PM

Iwantsprinkles, The Flowbee was a large part of my childhood. My parents bought one at Sam's Club and used it all the time. I never went to a professional until I was late into my teens. They'd get out the vacuum and hook that shit up then repeatedly bump it against my head until the hair was cut off. Good times. Bad Haircuts.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at December 29, 2008 6:34 PM

Let's see - 8 more inches of snow, freezing rain, and fog so thick I could not see my mailbox 6 feet from my front door. I spent five wonderful days surfing Hulu. Highlights:

The Man Who Never Was / Clifton Webb: Is there such a thing as a WWII spy thriller procedural, because this was one. Lots of King and country, stiff upper lip kinda stuff and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Stranger / Orson Welles: Loved it. Orson was the bad guy, Edward G. Robinson was the good guy, and Loretta Young was radiant. I think it is very underrated, one of Welles' better directorial efforts, and I think every 'that guy' from the forties and fifties was in it.

Beach Blanket Bingo / Annette and Frankie: Lame music, ridiculous bathing suits, wretched acting, and Annette couldn't sing her way out of a paper bag if you gave her a machete to beat the time with. A friend watched it simultaneously at her house and we ripped it over the phone. We had a wonderful time!

Sunday was football - I think I enjoyed the Eagles/Dallas game almost as much as BBB...

Posted by: funtime42 at December 29, 2008 6:35 PM

Slumdog is amazing. I saw it in an early BAFTA screening with a Q&A following. Such an uplifting film. Def recommend that!

Also, Langella is likely to get the Best Actor nod, not Best Supporting. Which would leave Heath in a much safer position. That's how it's played out in the other awards anyway.

Posted by: KatSings at December 29, 2008 7:15 PM

Nikki,

I'm not sure if this counts, but my friend Daniel, ridiculously watched The Sound of Music at Christmas and goes so far as to claim it is a "Christmas movie." I think that is stupid. I also don't think "Favorite Things" is a Christmas songs. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH CHRISTMAS. I mean, it's a list. It's not a Christmas list.

Jesus.

Posted by: The Pink Hulk at December 29, 2008 8:25 PM

Haha, funtime42, a friend of mine and I did that once with an episode of Trading spouses. It was the one where one of the families were these crazy raw-meat-eating people who cried when the new mom made them cook their steak and bathe regularly (the father, no less).

Pookie, considering the kind of guys I've been getting with lately, I am not at all surprised by this.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 12:51 AM

dammitJanet, "Die Hard" is SO a Christmas movie.

Geez, I haven't been out since ... um, "Burn After Reading." "Doubt's" here but nothing else worthwhile on the immediate horizon. Mrs. Daddy says she'd like to see "Gran Torino." I'm cool with that, and (still) waiting for "Frost/Nixon" as well. "57 Channels and Nothin' On ..."

I'm not sure whether I should be insulted or relieved that I didn't make your top 10, Pooks. But I shouldn't be surprised; my shit's been slipping. I resolve to make the list in '09, cause I gotta know what a Pookie T-shirt looks like.

Posted by: bucdaddy at December 30, 2008 12:56 AM

Pookie, I am deeply hurt by my exclusion from your list, but I suppose I should take it as inspiration to better myself and to sharpen my wit on the hapless victims offered to me by Pajiba. For now I will rend my clothing and cut off my hair, but my despair will be temporary. I will crawl back from the inevitable booze and drug fueled bacchanalia that this spiral of shame and self doubt will send me on, find new a new intellectual muse from a familiar but unappreciated source, and return to Pajiba in commenting glory. After winning so many tee shirts via EE that I begin selling them myself, I will write a book detailing my troubles (and possible return to the Catholic Church, but only if that's deemed commercially appropriate) titled Rusty Around the Edges; How Anonymous Internet Based Exclusion Led to the Best and Worst Years of My Life. The ensuing publicity blitz and book tour will take me away from you for weeks, months, possibly even years, but once I have the time to return to Pajiba (under a newly assumed pseudonym, obviously) I will express my gratitude to you in no uncertain terms.

But first, booze and drug fueled bacchanalia. I feel that is key to my creative process.

If nothing else, it's at least the key into Pookie's pants.

10)Melody-You are very intriguing

Pookie, I am flattered. Is there some kind of award issued?

Posted by: Melody at December 30, 2008 1:32 AM

Genny, I had not intended for this list to be published as yet in its current form. One of my assistants mistakenly published it with the thought that it was the final product and not a rough draft as it was intended to be. Genny you are a gifted wordsmith, your breast, umm I mean your talent for writing is without equal. I beg of you to not return to the Catholic Church least ye become part of a human smorgasbord. My failure to not include you in my list is a mistake that I and I alone must bear, heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 1:37 AM

Melody you are perhaps one of the few people here at pajiba that I can't get a read on. There is something different about you that I can't put my finger on and its quite unique for me. I'm usually a good judge of people. Do not be concerned about being placed at number ten, as far as I'm concerned Melody you are among the gods.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 1:46 AM

Sabrina Sabrina Sabrina, you are quickly becoming the focal point of my desires.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 1:53 AM

And right here is where I breathe a giant sigh of relief that you don't know what I look like or where I live.

No offense or anything.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 2:31 AM

Sabrina I assure you I'm an honorable man, I do not seek your treasures only your friendship.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 2:43 AM

Great, now you're like the guys I've been trying to get with recently. So... how do you feel about taking a trip up to NY?

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 2:59 AM

Sounds wonderful, what do you have in mind?

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:03 AM

We form a deep bond after you tell me about the broad you used to date and I tell you about all the dicks I've been meeting, both literally and figuratively, and then we get drunk, watch some cartoons, and eventually, after a charged look, fall asleep on the couch because I've sworn off men.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 3:11 AM

She was smart, sarcastic, and she would let me feel her up, her father was a drunk and sometimes we would hang out all night. I wanted to screw her, but I didn't, I knew I couldn't handle her. We had this weird relationship in that I loved her so much and she knew this but she dated other guys and would tell me all about it, and when I didn't show any interest she would get mad. Love is so powerful, Sabrina I don't do cartoons but I drink, I refuse to pay to look at your body and I can't sleep if I've got a raging boner.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:24 AM

Don't worry about the raging boner. Once you see mine, that probably won't be a problem for you anymore.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 3:40 AM

I assure you my RB is nothing to sneeze at.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:44 AM

You're slowly climbing up my list missy.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:47 AM

Thor would make your RB look like a flea.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 3:47 AM

You're making Thor slowly climb up.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 3:49 AM

Sabrina, I mean really, Thor, can you be a little more imaginative?

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:51 AM

Why not Rodney or Benjamin, or even Wilson?

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:53 AM

Sabrina you're so ghetto.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:55 AM

Don't try insulting him just because you're intimdated. Pookie. You know that's the name of a teddy bear, right?

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 3:56 AM

ummm sure, sure of course, I was just making sure you and I were at the same place.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 3:58 AM

I'm not sure what you're talking about anymore, Pookie, but that's ok because I'm going to sleep.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 4:02 AM

Sabrina thank you, because you might be even crazier than me and I don't know if I can handle that. Sweet dreams lover.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 4:06 AM

Goodnight, FRIEND.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 4:09 AM

Tomato, tomata, potato, potata, Sabrina, Pobrina, Pookie, Sabuki.

Posted by: Pookie at December 30, 2008 4:14 AM

Hahahahhahahaha, I love you, you bastards.

HBO is free this week. Who needs to pay for movies...

Posted by: grumpyoldman at December 30, 2008 8:12 AM

To Mike R.
For the new year learn when to use the objective case of the pronoun. Please.

Posted by: Arkansan at December 30, 2008 8:12 AM

Mike R --- I am SOO with you on the sequel to "Young Sherlock Holmes." I have seen both actors in other things, all growed up, but they will ALWAYS be Holmes and Watson to me. And, my family is completed addicted to Doctor Who, and the disasters which befall London at Christmas time.

bucdaddy Yes, "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie, but it contains what most Christmas movies don't, and should.....lots and lots of shootings, explosions, and profanity. Those SHOULD have been the 3 gifts the Wise Men brought the Baby Jeebus, not stupid gold, frankincense, and myrhh, whatever the hell that is.

Posted by: dammitjanet at December 30, 2008 8:52 AM

3)AvB- I would like you more If your writing wasn't so fucking perfect

Pookie, I'm stunned you've even noticed me. Wow. This is a way bigger honor than EE. T-shirt, schmee- shirt, this is all the award I need.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at December 30, 2008 10:38 AM

I'm just gonna write about the ones I saw:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button:
I actually liked it. I mean, the old man/little boy Brad Pitt was corny and creepy but otherwise, good acting and loved the story. Yes, I have been told the root id in Merlin's myth, but I believe all good stories come from Myth. I agree that Katrina stuff and way too constant flash forward to present was distracting and probably have been done better. But I love the positive message of the story, though filled with hallmark-y Forest Gump frequency of quotable lines. Plus, made me wanna got NOLA again and I love that city.

Yes Man:
I agree with the review, watching Jim Carrey was painful and it wasn't really all that funny. But I kinda liked the message or where it was trying to go, guess I'm in the mood. Plus I can't resist Zoey Deschanel. Besides, I snacked in to it after watching Gran Torino on matinee price, so it was worth my time.

Gran Torino:
Loved it. Funny as hell. Touching and intriguing. And cranky old man role was perfect for Clint Eastwood. I kinda lost respect to him after Mystic River but I guess I won't mind seeing him on screen. I love him for putting the vigilante myth in the ground and really getting behind what will happen in reality.

Milk:
That Sean Penn guy could act. I really enjoyed this movie and was urging everyone to see it. Especially important now. My professor said you always want to write what is relevant now and that is why this film need to be seen, because it's importance comes from the time we are living now.

Though it was not on the list, can I say something about the horror of Four Christmas? Oh, my god, was that my waste of my time and money! I just was looking for some light-hearted fun in the season of gloomy Oscar desperate movies and confounded by the unapologetic predictable formatic paint-by-number atrocity's disgusting pretense for depth and comfort. There is nothing comforting about seeing good actors, Vince and Reece excepted in this case, whoring-out their talent. What really was discomforting, though, was the people around me were actually enjoying it. I blame this movie for making the other Holiday movie I wanted to see , "Nothing Like Holidays" unavailable in my area.

Posted by: yocean at December 30, 2008 11:20 AM

Delayed reaction....GO!

I made Pookie's list! Wheeee! Also apparently I'm from India. Awesome.

Posted by: Snath at December 30, 2008 12:24 PM

I saw both Seven Pounds and Twilight this weekend. Not because I wanted to, but because everyone I was with wanted to see those films. No one will see The Curious Case... with me, and Slumdog Millionaire hasn't come to my little town. Grrrr. At least I got Wall-E and The Dark Knight for Christmas to keep me sane.

Posted by: Melissa at December 30, 2008 1:13 PM

Snatch, we will keep this thread alive. Even if I have to do it myself.
I am not at all surprised that Pookie put together a genuine list of his favorites and people treated it as a great honor. The man is an enigma.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at December 30, 2008 1:24 PM

I find the budding romance between Pookie and Sabrina fascinating and not at all unexpected.

Lucas, is your tongue frozen to the flagpole?

Posted by: dammitjanet at December 30, 2008 1:59 PM

Not romance, Julie. Pookie and I decided we're better off as just friends.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 2:02 PM

I have to wonder how Kayanne feels about this recent development.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at December 30, 2008 2:29 PM

Oh shit, I hope she doesn't read this. I like her, I don't want her hunting me down or anything. Don't listen to Julie, nothing happened, Kayanne!

Posted by: Sabrina at December 30, 2008 3:03 PM

pookie,
in 2009, i will do my best to present evidence that your compliment is warranted.

Posted by: celery at December 31, 2008 8:46 AM

Nothing seems to be easier than seeing someone whom you can help but not helping.
I suggest we start giving it a try. Give love to the ones that need it.
God will appreciate it.
