April 15, 1952 - September 7, 2010

Actor Glenn Shadix, best known for his portrayal of the pretentious and terribly untalented interior designer ‘Otho’ in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, was found dead Tuesday at his home in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 58. He apparently died of blunt force trauma to the head after falling from his wheelchair in his home, having recently been using the wheelchair to help his mobility due to declining health.

Born William Glenn Shadix of Bessemer, Alabama, he was something of an unknown to the public until landing his first major film role as ‘Otho’ in Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy classic Beetlejuice. To Glenn’s credit, he took the role despite his agent at the time urging him not to do so. While filming Beetlejuice Shadix developed a dear friendship with director Tim Burton, who would use him repeatedly in future projects as the voice of ‘The Mayor’ in The Nightmare Before Christmas and as ‘Senator Nado’ in Planet of the Apes. His other more famous turns on film included parts in Heathers, Meet the Applegates, Sleepwalkers, and as the fragile ‘Associate Bob’ in Demolition Man. His last major role was on HBO’s short-lived “Carnivale” as ‘Val Templeton.’ Find his complete acting resume here.

Away from the cameras Glenn Shadix was a fan of relaxation and writing. Openly gay since the age of 17, he was involved in numerous non-profit and fund raising organizations benefiting gay rights, US military veterans, and those afflicted with AIDS. Always with his heart in the right place, and surrounded by like-minded individuals, he used his friendships with fellow actors like Lily Tomlin and Catherine O’Hara to raise money for charities such as Birmingham AIDS Outreach. Most recently he traveled with The Military Wounded Project visiting and speaking to our wounded vets at hospitals around the country.

A great character actor and friend to anyone who wanted to meet him; Glenn Shadix is survived by his spouse, Jon Jung, and his sister, Susan Gagne.

I thought he was great in Demolition Man and Beetlejuice.

I'm glad you wrote about him here. You don't have to be prolific to have left a wonderful impression. His 'Otho' was fantastic.

Beetlejuice--one of my favorite movies. Happy Trails, Otho!

He'll be missed.

Aw, I loved him as Otho. That's such a shame.

He created some indelible characters and I think that's one of the highest compliments one can pay any actor.
His actions away from the screen mark him as an indelible human spirit.
R.I.P., sir.

Why was he in a wheelchair? These guys never learn, when I leave this world I'm leaving falling off of a scoter from the scoter store.

Take it easy Spender, it's not like the guy was Shecky Greene or somebody.

I'm glad to see a Pajiba write-up. I actually heard about this on ApartmentTherapy.com since his most famous role was an interior decorator. Rest in peace, good sir.

May he never have to be a public servant in the afterlife.

I never knew anything about his personal life. Sounds like a caring person with a good heart. And I never knew he was the voice of the mayor in Nightmare. That is one of my all time favorite films. Rest in peace.

Well, that sucks... RIP indeed.

I personally loved him as Scorpius on a Halloween episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel air, "I put a hex on you!"

Posted by: citizen_cris at September 10, 2010 6:27 PM

He told Kyle Thompson to get him a sandwich.

Posted by: Lucas at September 10, 2010 8:59 PM

Wasn't he the minister in Heathers? "ES-KI-MO."

Posted by: Craig at September 10, 2010 9:14 PM

He was the Mayor in "Nightmare"? That was some damn fine voice work there.

RIP.
