Anyone Want to Write "Dexter" Recaps for Pajiba?

Hey Folks —

Given the success of Dan’s “Lost” recaps, I wanted to run recaps of a couple more Pajiba-like shows here on the site. S.P. Ashworth has been kind enough to volunteer her services for the “FlashForward” recaps, and the other show I’d like to cover is “Dexter,” since it seems like an appropriate show to cover — it’s thematically interesting, complex enough to discuss at length, and it would seem to suit our audience (for the record, I don’t think it’s terribly appropriate to recap sitcoms — there’s not really a lot to say that isn’t contained within the show).

So, I’m soliciting volunteers. The bad news: You’ll be paid in my gratitude only. The good news: There’s a good amount of exposure available, and you’ll be subject to an angry group of commenters, who will take pains to rip you apart. It’s not for the thin-skinned, but if you’re an aspiring writer, it’s a wonderful opportunity for rejection feedback.

I don’t really know a better way of doing this other than to ask those who might be interested to submit a recap of the first episode of “Dexter.” I’ll run the best one, and ask that person to stay on to write recaps for the other 12 episodes this year. No one would be expected to provide recaps as detailed and exceptional as Dan’s — he’s a paid professional, after all — but we are looking for recaps that are informative, interesting, and entertaining. A knowledge of the entire series is a necessary requirement.

If you’re interested in writing the recaps, please email a recap of episode number one to dustin at pajiba dot com.

Writing recaps and getting bitched out sounds like a lot of fun. But I don't usually see the shows till a week after airing and I don't think my writing skills are up to the challenge.

But I will also throw in my gratitude as payment. Someone please, please take on this job. Dexter is by far my favorite show right now.

Oh god, if only I had Showtime. Damnit.

I may just have to make a fool of myself.

Posted by: Cindy at September 30, 2009 8:44 PM

You got a deadline for that recap?

Posted by: DeistBrawler at September 30, 2009 9:02 PM

I don't have HBO, but I did read the books.

But you should let me and Lainey and Sarina and jM and Melody et al do a real-time review of Intervention or Hoarders. For a sample, see Lainey's FB page.

Hee.

tempting, but ultimately i lack the self discipline to reliably meet deadlines.

I wish I had Showtime just to be able to keep up with the episodes, let alone write a recap.

*gurk* I have neither HBO nor Showtime, and haven't seen a single episode of Dexter. Damn!

For Free?

Do you want to lick my ball sack for free?
Didn't think so.

I love Dexter, I have seen every episode and read every book and I do freelance writing. The answer to your question, sir, is: no goddamn way. I'm fucking terrified of the people here.

Posted by: TWoP Fan at September 30, 2009 10:32 PM

Deadline?

Posted by: Veronica at September 30, 2009 10:41 PM

No Mad Men recaps? Would love to here this place's perspective.

Posted by: aidan at September 30, 2009 11:10 PM

sigh. I spelled hear wrong, and obviously should not be in the running for any writing of any kind.

Posted by: aidan at September 30, 2009 11:14 PM

Similarly, I'd be interested if I watched the show or had Showtime. Hopefully another opportunity will arise one of these days.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at October 1, 2009 12:38 AM

I could do it, but I too woul want to know about the deadlines (since I'm french, the time delay could fuck it up)

Posted by: rg at October 1, 2009 1:01 AM

I was all over this idea until I too realized that I too don't actually have Showtime and watch all the episodes whenever they show up bootlegged online. Although this crowd doesn't seem too concerned with timeliness, so maybe that won't be an issue?

Posted by: Macafee at October 1, 2009 1:48 AM

Would love to give it a crack, but I live in Australia and watch everything on DVD, which puts me waaaaay behind most other people here.

Could it be anonymous?

Shit.

Could it be anonymous?

Posted by: Someone Else at October 1, 2009 2:28 AM

If it's "episode one" episode one, I would love to.
If it's this season's episode one, I can't, because I don't have them fancy channels up here in Dogsled, Canada.

So I'll just submit a blanket recap:
Dexter kills. Dexter is charming. Dexter gets away with it. Or will he?

I actually really love the Dexinator.

Posted by: Odnon at October 1, 2009 3:00 AM

Lauren, that made me laugh.

Posted by: Yossarian at October 1, 2009 8:31 AM

Just FYI: Show airs Sunday, and I'd want the recaps on Thursday each week. You can write under a pseudonym, and the deadline submitting the initial recap is tomorrow. Thanks, all.

Also, "Mad Men" would've been good, but it's more than halfway through its run. Maybe next season.

Posted by: Dustin Rowles at October 1, 2009 8:58 AM

Mr. Rowles, can I humbly request an extension? (Not just for myself, but for all) I'm interested, but I unfortunatly am tied up with a wake and a funeral for my boss today and tomorrow, plus I'd have to track down the episode. (Lack of Showtime doesn't stop what the internet can provide.)

If not, I'd gladly volunteer for the next "solicitation". What can I say? I'm a whore, so I'll write for free if I know there's an audience.

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at October 1, 2009 9:16 AM

Hmm. Alright. Monday deadline it is. I will also post the winner's submission on Monday.

Posted by: Dustin Rowles at October 1, 2009 9:25 AM

Many thanks, sir.

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at October 1, 2009 9:37 AM

*sniff sniff*

BUT I DON'T HAVE SHOWTIME DAMMIT!!! I NEEDS ME SOME BLOODY DEXTER!!!!

:end rant

Posted by: dammitjanet at October 1, 2009 9:41 AM

Ms. Janet, this might help:
http://www.sho.com/site/order/preview.do#/Dexter_s04_e01

Though be warned, it's supposedly edited down to a TV-14. Looks like torrents are the way to go after all.

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at October 1, 2009 9:47 AM

Is it season 1, ep 1 or season 4 ep 1 for the recap? I'm assuming season 1, for intro purposes.

Also, I had my mom DVR it since we canceled Showtime to be cheap and now she's hooked. Good thing all three seasons are on DVD and itunes.

Posted by: TWoP Fan at October 1, 2009 9:54 AM

Episode one of Season 4.

Posted by: Dustin Rowles at October 1, 2009 9:57 AM

I'll do it, but I watch the eps online so there would be a day or two delay. AND I actually have writing experience, and used to do script coverage for a production company in college so it's shit I know I can do. lemme know...

Posted by: snarla at October 1, 2009 3:26 PM

Hey, this first episode of Dexter season 4 is available on Netflix instant watch.

I assume it is just a special promotion for the first episode... the first episode of the new season of Californication is on there, too. I doubt we will get the whole season on demand as they air.

Still, this is pretty cool. Netflix watch instantly continues to amaze. And they got Big Lebowski, too.
