Dennis Farina Dead at 69

By Dustin Rowles | Miscellaneous | July 22, 2013 | Comments ()

Dennis Farina died in Scottsdale, Arizona from — what TMZ is calling — a blood clot in his lung. He was 69.

A character actor most known for cops and robbers roles over his 32 year career is probably best known to today’s generation for his role on Law and Order, and more recently, as Nick Miller’s Dad in “The New Girl.” A former Chicago police officer of nearly 20 years, Farina excelled at the the Chicago everyman, and had stand-out roles in Get Shorty, Snatch, and Saving Private Ryan. He also served as host of Unsolved Mysteries after Robert Stack passed away.

He will be missed.

    My favorite Dennis Farina line.

  • kirbyjay

Saw his name on trending and I wondered " what's my man Dennis Farina up to" so I clicked on his name.
    And now I'm sad.
He always elevated every movie he was in, but Snatch........we'll always have Snatch, Mr. Dennis Farina.

  • zeke_the_pig

This saddens me. We lost a good man. R.I.P., Dennis.

  • solafidex

The first time I saw Dennis Farina was in sneak-watching Crime Story as a kid. Anytime I hear the theme song "Runaway" I think of him - a great character actor! RIP!

  • Torgotronic

Sad to hear this; always enjoyed his work, most recently on the short-lived but quite excellent "Luck" on HBO. He had great chemistry w/Dustin Hoffman. Rest well.

  • He's been in so many good things but he has a small role in Sidewalks of New York that sometimes plays through my head unexpectedly and without warning and still cracks me up.

  • BlackRabbit

I know it sounds selfish, but can you not just say "dead at [whatever age]"? Say "passes away." or something It's less...brutal and more respectful. Maybe it's just me.

  • ratmdex

    He will be missed

  • BrokenWindows

One of my favorite characters in one of my favorite movies. Jimmy Serrano in Midnight Run.

  • WestCoastPat

A friend of mine put it best - "Hopefully, there are no Gator fans in the afterlife"

  • Sherry

Thank you for the reference to one of my favorite underappreciated movies, in which he was totally freaking hilarious. And I say this as a born-and-bred Gator fan.

  • PDamian

How is it that a handsome, cool, witty, kindhearted, talented guy like this one dies, and an egotistical f*ckwad like Geraldo lives to post naked selfies on Twitter?

RIP Mr Farina. You were my hero and my Wednesday evening object of lust in Law and Order.

  • trishy4301

We can only hope that his soul transferred to the new Royal Baby. R.I.P. Mr. Farina.

  • Bert_McGurt

That baby's mustache would be more hirsute than his pappy's entire head.

  • clancys_daddy

Sad now. Time for a Crime Story, Law and Order marathon.

  • Fabius_Maximus

    That's really a shame.

  • Slash

Bummer ... I always liked him. He was always both menacing and funny in the movies. Kind of a hard thing to pull off.

  • Helo

Damn, one of the cooler guys in the biz. Always a welcome presence in any project he was a part of. He will be missed.

"You and that other dummy better start getting more personally involved in your work, or I'm gonna stab you through the heart with a fuckin' pencil. Do you understand me?"

  • Miss Kate

Aww damn. Dennis Farina elevated anything he was in (imho). He will always be Lt Mike Torello in my heart. RIP.

  • John W

"Is this moron #1? Put on moron #2."

    RIP Dennis.

  • Mrs. Julien

"Don’t say a word to me Sidney, don’t say a fuckin’ word to me. I’ll get up and I’ll bury this telephone in your head."

It's time for an homage watch of Midnight Run.

  • Wrestling Fan

    Aw dammit.

"Yes, London. You know: fish, chips, cup 'o tea, bad food, worse weather, Mary fucking Poppins... LONDON!"

Mr. Farina's work on the screen gave me so many moments of joy, I feel like I owe him something. I've always been impressed by his move from law enforcement into acting and not just because of the skill it required, but because of the heroic and everyman nature of policemen and women. A 20 year officer in the CPD certainly has my respect. A delightfully entertaining character actor who could be as fun as he was fierce (often in the same role) certainly has my respect. And someone with the ability to do both in the same lifetime most definitely has my undying respect.

Thank you for the memories Mr. Farina, may you never be forgotten.

  • Maguita NYC

    That was beautifully written lc_ryan.

  • cheryl

I loved him as one of Michael Mann's 1980's go-to guys. Manhunter, Miami Vice....*sigh*. This blows.

  • LaineyBobainey

Son of a bitch. I just love him.

Men my dad's age, PLEASE stop dying, ok? It's not cool and I'm not ok with it.

  • Bert_McGurt

Ah, what a shame. He was a consistently entertaining screen presence and I'm going to miss watching him, especially in New Girl.

"On a cold and grey Chicago morning..."

  • DataAngel

    Oh. Sigh. :(

  • The Kitastrophe

"Is this moron #1? Put moron #2 on the phone."

may he catch the Duke in a better place.

  • emmelemm

Man, that sucks. He was always awesome on screen.

  • Maguita NYC

No no no! He was amazing AND kind! I loved that man for his cool presence on and off screen.

  • barlowjk

Comment edited for spoileriness and general disrespect. RIP.

  • FrayedMachine

This is the first celebrity death that has honestly made me go WTF. I will forever love this guy because of Snatch

  • Sherry

"Do you have anything to declare?" "Yeah. Don't go to England." Best line of the movie, almost. He will be missed.

  • Tinkerville

London? London. London? You know... bad food, worse weather, Mary fucking Poppins-- London!

  • Adrien

So now we know he didn't reincarnate into the Royal Baby. His soul went to Bardem-Cruz baby.

God Bless this man, Cousin Avi was my favorite character in Snatch.
