Brittany Murphy, the actress who starred in 8 Mile, Clueless and Uptown Girls died this morning from a fatal heart attack. She was 32.

TMZ reports that the Los Angeles Fired department received a call this morning from Murphy’s husband; Murphy was transported to Cedars Sinai and pronounced dead at the scene.

Murphy, whose career has floundered in recent years, had recently had something of a comeback in the making — she’s got three films completed, including Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables. Most recently, she starred in Ramen Girl, Deadline and Across the Hall. She, of course, had her break-out role in 1995’s Clueless, but in recent years, she was perhaps most popular for her voice work on “King of the Hill,” and Happy Feet.

This year can't end fast enough. Jesus Christ, a heart attack?

Posted by: Aislinn at December 20, 2009 3:15 PM

Wow. Sad news.

Posted by: Meander at December 20, 2009 3:17 PM

Isn't it a little early to be writing about this? It hasn't been confirmed by her camp yet (i.e., rep), only "multiple sources." Granted, if it's true, you'll be on the ball, but right now, it looks like you're jumping the gun.

Then again, I'm just upset at 2009. Another name gone. :( I hate this year.

Posted by: duckandcover at December 20, 2009 3:19 PM

Honestly, what the FUCK 2009.

2010, you had better be kind.

Posted by: Manda90210 at December 20, 2009 3:23 PM

Oh no!

I've liked her ever since the Clueless days.

Wow, so fucking sad. What a shock.

Posted by: kayla at December 20, 2009 3:31 PM

That is very sad. I always thought she was pretty and showed talent.

Posted by: L.O.V.E. at December 20, 2009 3:34 PM

Wasn't she also in Sin City? One of the best movies of the aughts.

Farewell Brittany. We'll miss you.

Posted by: barf at December 20, 2009 3:35 PM

Oh, well.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at December 20, 2009 3:43 PM

HOLY SHIT! The girl had an amazing voice. I'll be watching Clueless tonight and counting down to the end of this fucked up year.

Posted by: Scully at December 20, 2009 3:44 PM

Way too soon. Way too young.

Posted by: av at December 20, 2009 3:55 PM

I'm stunned... why her?

Posted by: anon at December 20, 2009 4:01 PM

Jesus. How random and sad. I didn't particularly like her as an actress (except Clueless, but how much "acting" was really going on in that movie). I've heard about her drug/eating disorder problems in the tabloids, but who knows. Way too young to go for anybody.

Cue the half-assed celebrity condolences.

Posted by: Cruise at December 20, 2009 4:03 PM

Be seeing you Brittany. I hope not sporadically.

I loved the song she did with Paul Oakenfold. The girl could sing. It's very sad. And yes, this year has been can't end soon enough.

Posted by: Carrie at December 20, 2009 4:16 PM

2009 just needs to end. Her poor family, no one should suffer like that during the holidays.

Although she hasn't done much recently, she had a free pass from me for Clueless and Girl, Interrupted.

"Why should I listen to you? You're just a virgin that can't drive."

Posted by: gee. ay. at December 20, 2009 4:21 PM

Murphy went out of heart failure because, very likely, the poor girl was on some major chemicals. She was looking beat and that shady dude she married I'm sure didn't help. People always forget that she did excellent voice work on King of the Hill.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 20, 2009 4:22 PM

That's pretty sad, I loved her voice (she wailed "Somebody to Love" in Happy Feet, it was awesome, I got chills).
I asked this on FB and I say it again: Why her and not the Lohan?

Posted by: MyySharona (formerly Sharon) at December 20, 2009 4:36 PM

Dead at 32, just before Christmas? Way harsh, God.

Posted by: Lauren at December 20, 2009 4:52 PM

Oh wow, I can't believe it. This sucks. :(

Posted by: Thijs at December 20, 2009 5:03 PM

Aw, so sad. Slim, I loved her as Luanne. The Manger Babies will be especially poignant now....

Posted by: meaux at December 20, 2009 5:12 PM

This year has been a bad one for celebities, another name to the list has been added, sadly

Posted by: Alex Stallwitz at December 20, 2009 5:17 PM

Awww... Luanne. This sucks.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at December 20, 2009 5:25 PM

This is awful. Her poor family. 32 is just way too young.

Posted by: redhead at December 20, 2009 5:26 PM

I thought this was another Josh Jackson thing. Damn.

Posted by: Eep at December 20, 2009 5:44 PM

R.I.P Brittany. I loved her in Clueless and of course, my all time favourite film 'Drop Dead Gorgeous'
'Yeah well you know what dad? Peters gay...GAY!' my friend and I still quote that line to each other on a daily basis.
My prayers and thoughts go out to her family.

Aside from the possible drugs/eating disorder COD, there is a condition called Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. A friend of my older brother's died from it at 23, he just dropped dead one day at work.

2009, just end now. This has been the worst year ever.

Posted by: Nieve 'The Threadkiller Queen' at December 20, 2009 6:18 PM

Just read this elsewhere. i've liked her since Girl, Interrupted. Very sad to hear this.

Posted by: Gabs at December 20, 2009 6:37 PM

It's just incomprehensible.

Heart attack?

At 32?

Posted by: general rhubarb at December 20, 2009 6:48 PM

Man she had quite the body of work even if it was only as a supporting player, from Kids Incorporated to Seaquest DSV to Pepper Ann. The only times she was the featured star was in those stupid rom-coms with Kutcher and Josh Hartnett (isn't he dead too?). They both flopped and that sealed it for her, she was relegated to best friend/hooker/stripper/waitress roles. Personally, I believe she was a 100% better fit for the Jessica Alba part on Sin City.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 20, 2009 6:48 PM

Cardiac arrest does not equal heart attack. The cause of death hasn't yet been determined.

Posted by: AP at December 20, 2009 6:54 PM

Cardiac arrest...that's Hollywood for "I did so many drugs my heart fucking stopped."

Posted by: jp at December 20, 2009 7:44 PM

What AP said.
Please... ease up on the speculations...

Posted by: n.wood at December 20, 2009 8:23 PM

32, my parents didn't meet each other until they were 33. Dying that young is a travesty.

Posted by: George at December 20, 2009 8:31 PM

Thank you for not speaking badly about her. It happens around here -- but now that she's dead...

Well, you get it.

Posted by: superasente at December 20, 2009 8:40 PM

She was cute, she had charisma, she had some skills and she was doing the hard work.

I was actually looking forward to more work form her.

Like I said, sad news.
~

Posted by: Meander at December 20, 2009 8:55 PM

This has bummed me out since I saw it earlier on Celebitchy (I consider CB a more reliable source than TMZ). She was Tai, she was LuAnn, and she was the just-dirty-enough chick who made the hot sexy times with B.Rabbit at the factory.

I agree with those who prefer to focus on her untimely passing, which must be especially devastating to her family at this time of year (projecting, of course, from my own similar experiences) than speculating about her cause of death. It could have been drugs, it could have been an eating disorder, it could have been an undetected heart problem, et cetera...why not just give the girl some respect and save the vulturism (yes, I made up that word) for later, when there are factual answers and conclusions.

2009, you've been a right soul-thieving bastard.

Posted by: Nicole at December 20, 2009 9:18 PM

Jeez.

The lady swinging with Craig Ferguson and Steven Wright. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK7NrZQhuIY

I'll miss her. She could actually emote.

Posted by: Phibbsy at December 20, 2009 9:57 PM

I always had a pretty big crush on her. She had big, soulful eyes and such a voice. I agree with all of you that 32 is too young, too soon and that 2009 cannot disappear from the calendar soon enough.

Posted by: Spender at December 20, 2009 10:18 PM

This is just the worst news ever in the history of news. She was supposed to be my date for New Year's Eve. Not to worry though. Lindsay Lohan is my #2 go-to girl. I always have a back up plan.

Of course I am screwed if she kicks it.

Posted by: fitzwilly at December 20, 2009 10:27 PM

Oh gosh. Just had to google this to make sure it wasn't a weird joke or I was imagining it. How sad.
Apparently her mother found her...?
Just adds to the sadness factor.
R.I.P.

Thanks to the poster who put up that link to Brittany on the Craig F show. That's a good way to remember her, with that laugh, and smile, and sense of goofy fun. I don't need to know anything else now. I hope/wish that she's in a better place.

Posted by: d at December 21, 2009 12:03 AM

I've enjoyed her work and really feel for her family trying to deal with such an early and tragic passing but really people, with the marriage to Monjack and all the other sketchy stuff she's been up to lately I'm amazed that you're really that surprised by her death.

Posted by: BigJim at December 21, 2009 2:54 AM

Even if she wasn't the best actress out there, she just seemed very....sweet. Wide-eyed Tai, Luanne and the Manger Babies. I remember reading an article after 8 Mile came out where she said Eminem had to teach her to throw up a good middle finger because she couldn't do both hands at the same time. She seemed just as sweet in real life, and whether it was drugs or anorexia (you can go into cardiac arrest from eating disorders), or something natural, I hope people remember her as being a sweet person.

Sometimes you don't need to win an Oscar or have a huge life scandal for a fan to just say "Huh, I'm going to miss having that actor/actress around." She was one of those people you'd always think would be "there", and now that she's not, it's sad.

Posted by: scorzi at December 21, 2009 8:33 AM

I'll always think of her as one of the best parts of Drop Dead Gorgeous. Such a shame she is gone, she always looked like she was having such a fun time in Hollywood. I'm just at a loss of words for how sad this truly is.

Posted by: Kamikaze Feminist at December 21, 2009 8:36 AM

She'll be Rolling w/ my Homies in heaven w/ TuPac...

Posted by: Ted at December 21, 2009 10:49 AM

i will love brittany murphy forever if only for her delivery of these two lines from drop dead gorgeous:

"It's like why asking all the guys chew Cophenhagen. If you're 17, and you're not a total fry... it's jus whatcha do."
"You know what dad, you know what? Peter's gay! GAY!!"

not to mention all of her awesome voicework, her fantastic singing voice, and clueless. i know she always had kind of a batty reputation and that her career had some serious ups and downs, but she always struck me as a true genuine talent. we'll miss you luanne.

Posted by: atinymachine at December 21, 2009 11:20 AM

"It is very important to always know your name. Here's a little trick I use to remember mine: I think of a man named Lu, and a woman named Anne. They meet in a kingdom in a forest..." -words of wisdom from Luanne Platter, King of the Hill

Posted by: atinymachine at December 21, 2009 11:25 AM

I always loved her. She had a great voice. She made the Menthos jingle sound like a rock song.

Posted by: Bizarro Sofía at December 21, 2009 11:47 AM

I happened to see the headline yesterday evening at the end of my shift when my co-worker logged onto Yahoo to check his personal email.

What?!

It was like I had been gut-punched.

She was a sweetheart.

Posted by: Rykker at December 21, 2009 11:58 AM

I heard this and the first thing I thought was "RANDOM."

I had a soft spot for Brittany. I found her infectious.

A heart attack at 32? I'm guessing she must have had heart disease...she was so young.

Posted by: citizen_cris at December 21, 2009 1:10 PM

Again, everybody, it wasn't necessarily a heart attack. Cardiac arrest can be caused by a heart attack but they're not the same thing.

Posted by: AP at December 21, 2009 1:52 PM

>>Ashton Kutcher, who dated Murphy and starred alongside in Just Married, expressed his sadness to his 4 million twitter followers with the following message: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. See you on the other side kid."

Barf. 2009, there's still time 2 take this douche-bag.

Posted by: Adam at December 21, 2009 6:08 PM

Very sad...She was a cutie and I honestly thought she did great in 8 mile (I had prepared to hate the whole thing, but couldn't). She was a real individual in Hollywood and that's very hard to achieve.

Posted by: replica at December 21, 2009 7:12 PM

i know this will seem like jumping on the bandwagon, but i honestly never understood the derision that she sometimes received from this site and it's commenters. i enjoyed her work in pretty much everything she was ever in (even the crappy films). but my favourite is probably this (skip to the 1:20 mark):

The beat thing I can say is that it's good to see that the usual fucking morons that pass off as Pajiba commenters aren't writing posts that say something along the lines of "Sending good thoughts to her family."

Like Murphy's relatives have ever even heard of, let alone read this pathetic dork spazzoid excuse for a website.

but what annoys me are the dorkoid posters saying something along the lines of "She was only 32?? That's so unfair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's way too young to die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

funny how none of you have said that about the majority of those killed in WWI, WWII, the Korean. Vietnam and both Gulf Wars who were American citizens as their average age was 22. But they deserved to die, right, because they were fighting in wars in which America was on the wrong side, even when we were fighting those pesky Nazis.

Tools.

I hope your grandmothers all get cancer.

Posted by: Fappy McFapper at December 22, 2009 5:52 PM

Oh that's sad. She's always had a special place in my heart for her work as Luanne. She was absolutely fantastic in that and she had the most infectious laugh. Too bad.

Posted by: figgy at December 22, 2009 11:48 PM

Yes, fappy, because mourning one person means we don't give a shit about no one else. We can only care about ONE person, don't you know?
