Who's Got a Boner For This Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Photo?

I feel like the only person who’s excited about Edgar Wright’s next film because it’s Edgar Wright’s next film. Not because it’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which I’ve never read, and not because of some slow-reveal marketing strategy Wright has been maintaining in order to keep the fans drooling and ultimately surprised.
Yes, I like that I’m seeing so few images — though I have trouble believing any number of production stills would ruin my enjoyment of the third film from the man who gave us me Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz — but I don’t like that the rarity of these images mean the web has to ejaculate all over them like a blogger does all over his room the first time he has his penis touched by a girl (I’m speaking hypothetically, of course).
I don’t deny the image looks cool, even if I have no idea what’s going on, but really, as Dustin said best on Twitter, it’s just “a stuttery floppy-haired dweeby guy holding a flaming sword.” I happen to love that stuttery floppy-haired dweeby guy, especially after watching him in Youth in Revolt this week, so I’m sold on that point. As for the flaming sword, is this some kind of clue? Is Wright telling us he’s a fan of ’80s new wave band The Care?
Just kidding, I don’t waste my time trying to decipher marketing materials, not for Lost and not for some movie I’ll be happy to just sit and watch whenever it comes out in full.
Here’s some of the responses to the pic from other bloggers:
- Sean at Film Junk:
One of the Scott Pilgrim pics is especially intriguing since it is our first glimpse at one of the action sequences in the film. Yes, that is Michael Cera wielding a flaming katana, and the dude in the white coat in the background is Jason Schwartzman as Gideon. I’m not sure who’s doing the back flip, but probably one of those evil ex-boyfriends I assume. Are you getting excited yet?
- Rick Marshall at SplashPage:
Yup, that’s Gideon Graves in the background, as played by Jason Schwartzman, and if previous reports are any indication, this could be the mysterious pyramid set we’ve heard so much about. That would mean this shot comes from the film’s final scenes — a part of the story that hasn’t been published yet, and could differ from O’Malley’s final volume of the comic.
- Seth Abramovitch at Movieline:
Rollerball + Episode III + Juno = First Look at Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
- Col. Hans Longshanks at ScreenJunkies:
As you can see, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World takes place on the set of America Gladiators. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jason Schwartzman stand stoically as judges in the far background, while a dude breakdances in the middle ground. I’m just not sure if they’re judging the dancing or Michael Cera’s lightsaber skills. Maybe the guy taking a dump near the edge of frame knows.
- Chris Hewitt at Empire:
For anyone who thinks that Wright’s adaptation of the excellent Bryan Lee O’Malley graphic novels is going to be an exercise in navel-gazing might be surprised to see this stunning action shot of Michael Cera, as the eponymous hero, taking on two evil goons with a flaming sword.
- Rob Bricken at Topless Robot:
More than a few surly Topless Roboteers have wondered if I like anything besides weird Japanese movies and sucking Joss Whedon’s dick. A fair question, but one which I can answer: This. I like this.
- Devin Faraci at CHUD.com:
Hell YES. This image of Michael Cera with a flaming fucking sword comes from Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and it’s a shot from the film’s final battle. See the dude in the white coat? That’s Jason Schwartzman as Gideon. See the dude flipping? He’s awesome.
- Drew McWeeny at HitFix:
When I look at the image of Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), flaming sword in hand, with Gideon Graves (Jason Schwartzmann) looking down at him and Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in the background, it is hard for me to believe that the film really exists and that it’s really coming out this year. It’s even harder for me to believe that I actually stood on that set in Toronto.
Yet… it’s true.
- Krystal Clark at ScreenCrave:
The first official image from Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has been released and it’s pretty bad ass. It features star Michael Cera as Pilgrim yielding a sword of fire! If this image is any indication, Scott Pilgrim will be pretty damn good. […] this may be a shot from the film’s final battle. It’s a theory I easily concur with because that flaming sword is too awesome to throw in the middle of a movie.
- Abotas:
When the first images from the upcoming live action adaptation of Scott Pilgrim initially came out, I was a tad disappointed. After seeing this pic of Michael Cera looking like a pretty spot-on Scott while wielding a fiery katana, my nerd boner is raging beyond the point of control.
- Mark from I Watch Stuff:
If you would like to purchase one of these fire swords, they will be available for purchase at 4 AM, when a man named Mr. Odell will be selling them after a basic cable station goes off the air and is replaced by a bizarre, low budget shop-at-home station that sells literally hundreds of knives for $50.
- Vince Mancini at FilmDrunk:
I haven’t been covering Scott Pilgrim vs. The World very much, because the other nerds seem to love it and I’m afraid of associating with them in case my jock buddies are around.

Yeah, sorry, I'm not a huge Edgar Wright fan. I enjoyed Shaun Of The Dead, but for me it's not the second coming many of you seem to think. Hot Fuzz was just way too bloated for me.
As for all this "Scott Pilgrim" talk...who the fuck is Scott Pilgrim? Obviously I'm not a comics aficionado. Sort of curious about it now, though...
