5 Shows After Dark: If Your Love is Burning, Please See a Doctor

Survivor on CBS at 8:00pm ET.

The Tomorrow People on The CW at 9:00pm ET. This show has apparently been on for a little while, but my brain just decided I wouldn’t see it until now. It’s a remake of a British series because that’s what we’re doing these days, and it’s about people who suddenly develop super powers because in terms of television the series Heroes may as well be the Peloponnesian War.

American Horror Story on FX at 10:00pm ET.

The League on FXX at 10:00pm ET. New episode at a special time!

Burning Love on E at 10:30pm ET. Second season premiere. While I do love a good satire, I find them to be depressing at times just because I know how frighteningly accurate they can be. Ever since the Chapelle Show skit “Trading Spouses” became an actual show with exactly the same title, I’ve had a bleak outlook on the attempts to parody or satirize reality series. And if you ever think “Well, they can’t ever be THAT bad” remember that once upon a time there was a reality series where they took women away from their families, gave them plastic surgery and then made them compete in a beauty pageant. That is a thing that happened. Sincerely.

Genevieve Burgess also remembers that time they were going to make women marry a fake millionaire for… reasons? The early 2000’s were bad times for TV.

Genevieve, I love you for this phrase: "because in terms of television the series Heroes may as well be the Peloponnesian War"

  • Bert_McGurt

To be fair though, Chapelle's Show WAS eerily prescient. Anybody read this week about the white supremacist who found out he's part African?

  • Legally Insignificant

Paul Scheer is a lucky, lucky man. His wife is unbelievably beautiful, funny, and smart. She absolutely crushes it in whatever she does.

  • pisswizard

I saw 'ass backwards' the other day, and as much as I want to agree with you because I bloody adore her....sister is not crushing it at screenwriting :/ everything else she does is gold, though.

  • BlackRabbit

I want to see a horror series about folks who develop superpowers. Like a guy who gets laser vision just as he's getting married and exchanging vows....

  • bastich

Years ago, Warren Ellis wrote a graphic novel called "Ruins", about a world where the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hulk, etc. gained their powers with horrifying results. It was basically a version of the Marvel Universe where everything went wrong. It was great.

  • BlackRabbit

I THINK I remember that. Then there was the Ultimate X-Men story about the kid who woke up one day with the disintegration field power....

  • bastich

Yeah, I remember that one too. Mark Millar wrote that one, if I remember correctly. Good stuff.

  • BlackRabbit

And there's Marvel's Bullet Points. Not quite the same, but still some nasty bits.

  • John W

Tomorrow People is on the air and Alphas is cancelled. The universe is cruel.

  • Green Lantern

    Truly.

  • DominaNefret

Alphas was cancelled after that episode. Creating the most miserable/depressing series finale ever.

  • Green Lantern

Wow...hadn't though about it THAT way, but you've got a point.

Gonna go drink some arsenic now...

  • Al Borland's Beard

I remember 'The Swan'. That was definitely a low point in our culture.

  • Uda

I could have sworn I read not that long ago that FOX is bringing it back, but this time with "celebrities".

  • Al Borland's Beard

I hope not, but wouldn't be surprised.

  • letsspoon

Are half of the people in that header photo from Party Down or am I going crazy...

  • Batman

4/7 so yes you are crazy

  • Parsnip

No you're not going crazy. Most of them were/are in Burning Love which, by the way, is a lot of fun.
