5 Shows After Dark: So Many New and Returning Shows Tonight

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | September 25, 2012 | Comments ()

"NCIS" on CBS at 8:00pm ET. 10th season premiere.

"New Girl" on Fox at 8:00pm ET. Second season premiere. And back to back episodes to kick off the second season of a show about a woman who is no longer new in any sense of the word.

"Ben and Kate" on Fox at 8:30pm ET. Series premiere.

"The Mindy Project" on Fox at 9:30pm ET. Series premiere. I am actually excited about this because I loved Mindy Kaling's work on "The Office" and her book was hilarious. I still mourn that she's not updating her blog "Things I've Bought That I Love" anymore and it's been YEARS since that stopped. One of my favorite things about her is that while she is unapologetically driven and ambitious, she also loves sequins, rom-coms, and pretty shoes and for so long I had this weird idea that women who were smart and ambitious were above such petty things. Now I know better. Sequined shoes for all!

"Vegas" on CBS at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. Dennis Quaid doing his best... I'm not familiar enough with westerns to really finish this metaphor. Throw your favorite cranky but upstanding sheriff character in there.

Genevieve Burgess Is thrilled to have worthwhile television to write about again. At least for the moment.

Sheriff Jack Carter. Or, failing that, Andy Griffith. Though I guess they don't really meet the 'cranky' requirement. But it would be fun to see Dennis Quaid doing his best Andy Griffith impersonation on his Las Vegas show. Totally new vibe.

So how many episodes should one give a new show before flushing it out of the DVR scheduling?

  • Mavler

Tuesday has now become the busiest night in my TV calendar.

  • JenVegas

This week...it's so exciting...so full of promise. And then we slowly start to remove shows from the DVR schedule, and in a month we'll be lamenting what was cancelled prematurely, what the networks stuck us with for the season and how our formerly favorite shows are squandering our love. But oh, this week. This week is magical.

  • Full of promise? The only new show that looks halfway interesting is Last Resort on Thursday. Other than that it's the same variations on doctor and/or cop procedurals and fish-out-of-water sitcoms we get every year. Network TV is a disaster. "Vegas" sounded decent and has a good cast. Then I read it's another patented CBS procedural. Pass. I have no interest in a show that can be watched infrequently and not miss anything of importance. What the hell is the point? I've never understood why procedurals are so popular. Probably because most people have short attention spans and 44 minutes is all they can handle for a narrative.

  • JenVegas

I'm pretty sure that SLW wrote a really good Think Piece on why people love procedurals not too far back on the pajibas....FYI, Tyler....since you were wondering.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

And because old people watch the networks and they love them some semen stains. Or whatever the 60s Vegas equivalent of a semen stain is.

Actually, it's probably still a semen stain, but with vodka mixed in and it's not relevant to the investigation.

  • Groundloop

Vegas in the '60's? I would have guessed bourbon, or maybe scotch. And bourbon is always relevant to the investigation, amirite folks?!?!?!

Yeah. I don't know what that means either.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

You don't have to know what you mean, "amirite folks?" inherently receives a chorus of assent.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

So it turns out I wasn't right. I blame whichever Quaid is on Vegas. I know the difference by sight, but the names completely escape me. Dennis, Randy, Dandy, who even knows?
