5 Shows After Dark: Sutter Does Have a Lock on "Mature Lust"

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | September 18, 2012 | Comments ()

"So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox at 8:00pm ET. Ninth season finale. Anyone sticking this out? I know it was fairly popular around these parts for a while.

"White Collar" on USA at 9:00pm ET. Fourth season summer finale.

"The New Normal" on NBC at 9:30pm ET. The first two episodes definitely had their moments and I'm sticking with it for now despite some patented Ryan Murphy over the top-ness. Ellen Barkin is a cartoon, but if you're going to write a cartoon into your show you really can't cast it any better than Ellen Barkin.

"Hot Set" on SyFy at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. This is a reality series centered around designing sets for television shows or movies. So, that's a thing that's on television tonight.

"Sons of Anarchy" on FX at 10:00pm ET. I know a lot of you abandoned this show after the bait and switch of last season's finale. I'm sticking with it, because at this point I find it more interesting to see the ways Sutter contorts himself to keep the favorite characters alive. Also, Jimmy Smits continues to excel in his chosen field of showing America his ass.

Genevieve Burgess Is thrilled to have worthwhile television to write about again. At least for the moment.

Jimmy Smits is confusing for me. He should be exactly my type. My husband is Hispanic and damn is he a good looking man. Benito Martinez was distracting me with his sexiness in every scene he was in on SOA. Jimmy Smits makes me feel icky though. It all goes back to the sex/date rape scene I was much to young to watch in the Ellen Barkin movie he was in. The one I'm too lazy to look up, where a guy is murdered and comes back as Ellen barkin. His ass made an appearance there too. Now he will forever be a man-lady date raper.

I'm sticking with Sons to the bitter end. I was pissed at the end of last season but the opener this year completely washed that awful taste from my mouth. I see now why Clay was left alive, watching him degenerate into taking over Piney's role has been fascinating so far, although the CIA deus ex machina is still a little annoying.

"...but if you’re going to write a cartoon into your show you really can’t cast it any better than Ellen Barkin."

Oh, I dunno, Jane Lynch comes to mind.

I'll give "Hot Set" a look based on its appearing to be a clone of the underrated effects-makeup show"Face Off," which I love.

[If you haven't seen FO, check it out. It's impressive for the combined artistry and practicality of the challenges, the group spirit of the contestants, who often help each other out, and the judge-watching. The last ep's challenge was to mash up Alice in Wonderland and 'Resident Evil,' (yeah yeah, I know), and the coolest 3-day makeups to result were a Red Queen whose skin and bones were essentially forming into a crown and robes, and a scabrous, purplish Cheshire Cat that badly needed Neosporin. Contestant Roy is killin' it.]

So if "Hot Set" has any of the same vibe, I'm in.

Normally I hate reality tv but I love Face Off because they actually have to show some kind of creativity and skill to move on each week and you're right, there's a lot less of the backstabbing and awfulness that's usually on these shows, the contestants end up helping each other more often than not. (I really hope Roy wins, his Red Queen was awesome! And I loved the little ginger kid who won last season although I forget his name now.)
Edit: I'm so wrong, it wasn't the ginger kid who won last year it was that other guy Race, who was also good. Boo-urns to me!

I'm going to a SYTYCD viewing party-

  • I'm sticking it out! Hoping for Chehon and Tiffany to win. Yeah, yeah, I know everyone loves Eliana, but Tiffany's really grown on me the last few weeks!

Tiffany is a trooper, so I won't be too terribly disappointed if she beats Eliana. I will be disappointed when Cyrus inevitably wins, but he's such a nice-seeming dude, it won't hurt for long. I miss Cole.

  • Yeah, Cyrus seems like a great guy, and he's so good at what he does, that it's hard to begrudge him. I wish Cole had made it to the final four, but that would've been an even more difficult choice for top guy!
