5 Shows After Dark: This Photo Just Gave Me a Small Pop Culture Stroke

9/11 Firehouse on Discovery at 8:00pm ET. This is a special featuring firefighters from “Ten House” who were the first on the scene at the World Trade Center recounting their experiences in the early moments after the planes hit.

Royal Pains on USA at 9:00pm ET. Fifth season finale. I am amazed at how popular this show apparently is, both because it’s one of those shows where I don’t personally know anyone who watches it and also because the concept of a doctor who caters exclusively to the incredibly wealthy doesn’t really seem like it’d be a crowd pleaser these days. But I’m sure the good people at USA know what they’re doing. I mean, beyond producing inoffensive dramedies that can cause you to lose four hours of a Saturday afternoon in the blink of an eye.

The Bridge on FX at 10:00pm ET.

Broadchurch on BBCA at 10:00pm ET.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on FXX at 10:00pm ET. Alright, readers, I only have five spots to fill and I’m not going to list both “It’s Always Sunny” and “The League” every week so I’m just going to keep switching back and forth unless you all state a clear preference in the comments. So figure out which one you like better (or which one you’re more likely to forget is airing) and let me know so I can start blaming all of you when people act like I somehow forgot how to read TV listings because one particular show they enjoy is not among the five mentioned here.

Genevieve Burgess has experienced a frightening amount of lost time due to USA marathons.

    it's always sunny

I'll chime in on Royal Pains -

What Long_Pig_Tailor and DominaNefret said. Also, no matter what you think of all the other characters on the show, Hank is a genuinely nice and decent person. He is one of the very few characters on TV I would actually like to have a a real friend (along with everyone on Parks & Rec).

  • DominaNefret

Yeah, Hank doesn't spend anywhere near all of his time treating incredibly rich patients. He focuses a good chunk of his time on treating the blue-collar permanent residents of the community who work for the incredibly rich seasonal residents. For free.
And 80% of the incredibly rich people on the show are totally quirky and charming incredibly rich people.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

I'll explain Royal Pains. The reason it's not offensive is that Hank-- the doctor in question-- spends roughly 70% of his time not actually treating rich patients, but effectively stalking middle and lower class people who never asked for his help solely so he can treat them. Meanwhile, he has a PA who treats most of his rich patients, and now at least one other doctor to do the heavy lifting.

So it's feel good that way, and then also pretty people in pretty clothes at pretty parties. QED, I suppose.

  • Al Borland's Beard

I love The League, but I'll take It's Always Sunny because I'm very excited for the "Flowers For Charlie" episode.

  • SVR

Me too. But that's admittedly because I think Burn Gorman is a fabulous actor.

  • Marcus

    Why not Always Sunny/The League?

  • Michelle

But that'd still be 6 shows! "6 Shows After Dark" just doesn't have the same flow.

  • Slash

I don't get to watch either of them anymore because they're on "FXX."

    Fuck you, FX.

  • APOCooter

More like "Fuckk Youu, FX" amirite?

  • Lovely Bones

It's Always Sunny is far superior to The League. It deserves to have that spot.

  • Leland Eidson

I would say the exact opposite.

See, Kimberly #537 agrees with me! See what happened to Bradley? He touched the Anti-Bradley, then -- poof -- gone forever! It's as though Bradley was never here.
