5 Shows After Dark: Really, It's Just Cruel

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | August 7, 2012 | Comments ()

"2012 Olympic Summer Games" on NBC at 8:00pm ET. More individual events in men and women's gymnastics and track and field, and a beach volleyball semifinal in which Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings play China's Xue Chen and Zhang Xi.

"Deadliest Catch: Behind the Scenes" on Discovery at 9:00pm ET.

"Shipping Wars" on A&E at 9:00pm ET. Second season premiere. For all of you who were desperately waiting the return of this show. I'm sure there's, what, like a whole dozen maybe? I'm amazed at the amount of niche television that's happening thanks to all the extended channels on cable. I think we'll soon have reality shows for every profession. And what a beautiful and glorious day that will be.

"Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins" on HBO at 10:00pm ET. Seventh season premiere. Awww, HBO, that's just mean. Don't tease the football fans like that. They get all excited for training camp footage and you give them the Dolphins. Poor football fans.

"World's Worst Tenants" on Spike TV at 10:00pm ET. "Hoarders" cross over potential?

Genevieve Burgess hates summer television just as much as it hates her.

Pathetic. Thirty-two teams in the NFL, and all HBO can get are the gods-damned Miami Gods-damned Dolphins? Leaving aside the fact that I've hated these bastards since 1972, they were bums for years and they'll be bums this year as well.

Quick question, besides NBC with this olympic mashup you guys get regular live coverage in some cable channel, right?

  • Genevieve Burgess

Sort of. My satellite service has an NBC Sports channel that runs some events live and highlight shows on less popular sports, and during the day NBC will sometimes show live events here on the East coast. You can also stream any event live through NBC's website as long as you 1. have a cable or satellite subscription and 2. have the username and password for that account.

It's still rough, because the East coast is five hours behind London and the West coast is a full eight hours behind, so even evening and night events are hard to catch if you work during the day. I had to be up at 7am on Sunday to catch the women's doubles gold match.

HBO should have gone to Green Bay and gotten footage of a real football team, that would have been watching.

HBO runs into a real problem in that most organizations do not like having the film crews around. It causes all sort of potential issues, from extra logistics, to effecting the team dynamic.

At any given year, only 3 or four teams will even offer to allow Hard Knocks to cover them. Generally they are the teams that are struggling to fill their stadiums and need something to boost their fans' interest.
