5 Shows After Dark: In Crime Drama Bingo, the Free Space is "Scarves"

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | July 9, 2012 | Comments ()

"The Closer" on TNT at 9:00pm ET. Seventh season summer premiere.

"Hard Times: Lost on Long Island" on HBO at 9:00pm ET. This is a documentary following some families on Long Island who have been unemployed for long periods of time since the economic downturn, tracking them over a period of six months. If you are currently facing a similar period of un or under employment, this sounds far too depressing to actually watch.

"Masterchef" on Fox at 9:00pm ET.

"I Killed my BFF" on Bio at 10:00pm ET. First season finale. The title of this has always seemed alarmingly flippant to me. I associate the term "BFF" with young women or texting, not murder. I think when you murder someone, you lose all right to refer to them as "BFF" forever.

"Perception" on TNT at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. Let's play crime drama bingo! I know we can already check off the squares for "non-cop partnered with cop", the "major mental illness treated as a quirk" box, and the "misunderstood genius" box just from the promos! All we need is "non-cop breaking the case while seasoned police detectives stand around flummoxed" and "evidence handling that would get the case thrown out of court" and we've got ourselves a winner! Or loser, depending on how you want to look at it.

Genevieve Burgess hates summer television just as much as it hates her.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

    I love crime drama bingo.

  • spljt

My goodness but that show was horrible and the wait-for-it twist at the end whether or not his mentor/goddess was real, gah!!!

  • BWeaves

Hum, "let me go off my meds so the voices in my head can solve the case that experts without mental illness can't solve." Yeah, that always works.

  • Alex00

I can't tell if I'm overreacting to how badly this seems to misrepresent what having schizophrenia is like....

  • John

What is it with former Will and Grace castmates and scarves?

  • Oooh! Can we add "no reason to be in the place where the clue that breaks the case is found"? Because that's my favorite.

  • BitchTits

    Can we also add "enhance"

  • Well, after "science doesn't work that way" and "you don't get results that fast" in a forensics lab.

  • BiblioGlow

"Science doesn't work that way" is my second favorite, right after "Technology doesn't do that". However, I'm hoping for "Misunderstood genius interacting badly with victim's family, forcing partner to make excuses for him", myself.
