5 Shows After Dark: Note to Television: A Series Can Premiere Outside the US

“Burn Notice” on USA at 9:00pm ET.

“Project Runway” on Lifetime at 9:00pm ET. 10th season premiere.

“Misfits” on Logo at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. This is listed as a series premiere despite the fact that this show has been out for a while, just not in the US. This is the much acclaimed British series that follows five teenage delinquents after an accident gives them super powers. It’s had a pretty healthy cult following online, and I suspect the hold up to getting it aired in the US is that one of the kids sends people into fits of sexual ecstasy with a touch. We don’t do that here. If it was just, you know, making their heart explode violently out their chest in a spray of blood, that’d be just fine. Anyway, “Misfits” on Logo so those of you with some extended cable or satellite packages in the US can see this.

“Sullivan and Son” on TBS at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. New series created by and starring comedian Steve Bryne who plays a corporate lawyer who buys his parents bar in Pittsburgh when he finds out that they’re planning to sell it and retire. Hijinks will, with the terrible inevitability of multi-camera sitcoms, ensue.

“Louie” on FX at 10:30pm ET.

Genevieve Burgess hates summer television just as much as it hates her.

  • BiblioGlow

Ok, you've all convinced me to give Misfits a chance, I'll be catching it on Hulu. Thanks, Pajiba!

  • I_Sell_Books

    Misfits is available on Hulu...

  • elirt

Misfits is soooooooooo good! The whole series is on Hulu and we watched it on a whim and got hooked. I'm not sure how the next season will go since they lost some vital characters, but I'm sure they'll figure something out.

  • Morgan_LaFai

They pulled it off on Being Human, so I think they will be okay here. Wikipedia has some details about the upcoming 4th season, though it's wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt.

  • kushiro -

Yeah, there's only two regulars left at this point.

  • John W

Unfortunately LOGO is a viacom channel so I won't be seeing Misfits..AAARRRGGH!

  • Maguita NYC

Try looking for it here. It was where I found Season 1... Hope it isn't deleted:

  • Bert_McGurt

I think it's still on Netflix up north here. Not sure if it is in the US though.

  • Me either!! Damn it Direct TV & Viacom!! I just got hooked on this series not two days ago, and now it's coming to the states and I can't watch? Waaaahhhh!!!

  • celery

OH NATHAN HOW DO I LOVE THEE LET ME COUNT THE WAYS

I think Nathan is one of the best recent television characters. Kelly is also the best thing since sliced bread.

  • lowercase_ryan

sorry but Rudy > Nathan. I want to agree with you but I can't. And I mean indecent Rudy, not decent Rudy

  • wendy

i am so with you on this.

  • Rooks

Oh ye gods, how I loved Misfits. I wished I could watch the first season for the first time once more. And maybe ignore most of the second season (with the exception of the one episode in which Kelly ends up kicking Hitler in the nuts).
That said, my dear gloriously ignorant US-American friends: Watch it. Do it. Don't you dare missing it. You can thank me later.

  • kushiro -

Not to be a dick (ok, to be a dick), but isn't Hitler in the third season? Which, by the way I liked, mostly because Rudy is a blast.

  • Rooks

Oh, it was! In my head, seasons 1 and 2 are just one season because I watched all the episodes in one go.
    Thanks, dick!
And I too liked season 3, but it was... different. And since there are only 8 episodes, I felt like I didn't have enough time getting used to the new feeling (and to Rudy's accent and diction).

  • RedDwarfGreenBug

Rudy is now the greatest thing on the show. He is fucking hilarious and actually a step-up from nathan. I was skeptical at first, but now I think the creators vision, writing and casting is so strong that it makes the departure of most of the original cast work great for the show in that it keeps things fresh. I really wasn't expecting the end of the third season to be what it was, but the idea was definitely in mind the second when he fucking told her he was from the future and that they definitely WOULD fall in love...manipulation ain't cool, but I guess it's acceptable when it comes in the form of cunnilingus.

  • competitivenonfiction

(SPOILERS) I didn't see this as manipulative at the time, but I see where you're coming from. This is the point where I completely fell in love with Simon. I feel a little pervy admitting this, but I re-watched the scene with him and Alicia about a half dozen times. To me, their arc was epic and really demonstrated the courage of the writers. How many writers would actually write out two of their main characters, and the most compelling love story?

  • ruby

Is it weird if I say that that's kind of the point at which I fell a little in love with Simon?

  • RedDwarfGreenBug

No. While what he did was wrong, it's also sweet and melancholy. It might have been a little weird if he had done what he did in order to just fuck her without the intention of ever saving her, but he gives up his life for that little end chunk of happiness and that's pretty beautiful. Selfish, but selflessly selfish. Good stuff.

  • ruby

Well, also it's the point at which: 1) Simon becomes a whole person, rather than just the anti-social guy and 2) I started really appreciating the actor who plays him, because when you see Simon act heroic, it makes sense when all I could have imagined before was him being this weirdo (even if he became more superhero-esque.) But you've put it much better than I have.

And, for anyone who hasn't seen it, Misfits is well worth watching (as long as you're willing to allow for the random dumb bits that seem to pop in occasionally.)

  • lowercase_ryan

it's fucking brilliant. Are the first two seasons still on Hulu?

The intro song is my ring tone. only one person that has heard it knew what it was. sad.

  • celery

The first two seasons most certainly are still on Hulu. Hulullujah!

  • lowercase_ryan

    WHAT IS LOGO??!?!
I NEED THIS NOW!!!!! I'M SHOUTY CAUSE I NEED MOAR MISFITS!!!!!

  • lowercase_ryan

    I'm calm, I get logo.

  • lowercase_ryan

shit, that's lame. it's starting over, I thought it was a new season. hmmmm

  • LwoodPDowd

"...I suspect the hold up to getting it aired in the US is that one of the kids sends people into fits of sexual ecstasy with a touch."
Is his best friend Choda Boy?

  • Oh, I've been to Prague

What in the HELL is Logo??

  • Koolickle

Clearly you don't follow the amazingness that is RuPaul's Drag Race either. Also a LOGO show.
