5 Shows After Dark: Yup. Sure is a Giant, Mysterious Dome, Isn't It?

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | June 24, 2013 | Comments ()

"NHL Finals: Chicago at Boston Game 6" on NBC at 8:00pm ET. Chicago could take the series tonight!

"Oh Sit!" on The CW at 8:00pm ET. Second season finale. All of us should be ashamed that this show got a second season. Yes, even those of us who don't watch it.

"Miss You Can Do It" on HBO at 9:00pm ET.

"Under the Dome" on CBS at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. A new series based on one of the few Stephen King books I haven't read, but I gather it involves a giant dome that encloses a small town which is most likely located in Maine. Horror of some sort ensues. Since adaptations of Kings work range from The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption to the made for TV version of "The Stand", there's really no telling whether this will be great or awful. Fingers crossed that it's entertaining either way! As this strikes me as one of those ideas that started with a cool visual, rather than a cool story idea, I don't have high hopes.

"Mistresses" on ABC at 10:01pm ET.

Genevieve Burgess is pretty wary of anything with the name 'Stephen King' on it these days.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

How 'bout that hockey game folks? One of the most exciting playoff games of the year for sure.

  • Maguita NYC

Did not watch as loyally as many, but loved the series this season. I'm fine with the Blackhawks winning. No biggie for me.

  • Bert_McGurt

Yeah, I hear you. My team wasn't even in the playoffs this year, so pretty much the whole city was rooting for our homeboy Toews instead.

  • e jerry powell

Is it snowing up under the dome?

  • ,

    great or awful
    Awful, so far.

I'm giving it one more week.

  • Clint

It's actually ones of King's most enthralling books (the ending is kinda iffy but everything else is brilliantly thought through) and Brian K. Vaughn being on board makes me believe it'll be pretty damn good.

  • DehydrationStation

If you possess any measurable intelligence, and watched the preview scene from 'Under the Dome' wherein a cow finds itself chopped in half laterally, you already know precisely how hard and how toothy this series is going to suck. This particular digital effect was done waaaay better in Tarsem Singh's 'The Cell', and that was, what, a dozen years ago now?

  • Jezzer

It is possible for you to ever convey a simple message without being a condescending asshat?

  • DehydrationStation

Am I upsetting you with my typing, @Jezzer? I think it is possible that I am. Please confirm by continuing to tag each and every one of my posts like an obsessed fangirl.

  • Jezzer

God forbid you own your bullshit.

  • DehydrationStation

I don't even own a bull, you silly tool!

  • ,

Wow, where'd that come from? I sense a lot of pent-up rage. You need to masturbate at work more.

  • Jezzer

It comes from dealing with this fuckhead on multiple occasions.

  • DehydrationStation

Is there a prize for making @Jezzer rage, or does this happen so often that prizes would not be economical?

  • googergieger

So is it literally just about sitting?

  • AnnaKendrick'sLoveMuffin

The people who greenlit "Under the Dome", had they reached the end of the book at that point?

  • luthien26

My question about "Under the Dome" is this: is there a Corgi? Because there should be a Corgi.

  • Maguita NYC

Is Mistresses what I think it is? If so, please tell me it's not doing well. As women, we deserve so much better.

  • Genevieve Burgess

I will quote directly from the Bible of the internet, Wikipedia: [the show is] "about the lives of four female friends and their involvement in an array of illicit and complex relationships"

So, yes. It's exactly what you think it is. And it stars Alyssa Milano. WEEP FOR OUR KIND.

  • Maguita NYC

Feminism on a nosedive. Admittedly, helped along by women often enough.

I still rue the day we allowed the likes of The Jerry Springer and Maury Povich shows to air during daytime, when young boys and girls came back from school and watched that crap. We laughed it off and thought no one would believe this ridiculous representation of people interaction, and no way would we ever become anything like these absurd caricatures of humanity.

I just gave myself the major sadz.

Since adaptations of Kings work range from The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption to the made for TV version of “The Stand”

Obviously someone who has blocked all memory of the excruciating "The Langoliers"

  • linnyloo

...There were parts of that I found very amusing. I still make jokes with my guy about poor Crazy Mr. Toomey ripping up strips of paper.

  • Idle Primate

    And maximum overdrive.

  • TK

You watch your fucking mouth, pal.

  • Idle Primate

It makes a good emilio double feature with Freejack, both of which I had the questionable fortune of seeing when they were in the theatre.

  • DehydrationStation

    And 'The Tommyknockers'.

  • space_oddity

Brian K Vaughn worked on "Under the Dome," so it gives me some small amount of hope that it won't be a complete shitshow.

Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.
