5 Shows After Dark: Extra Nerdy Edition

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | May 1, 2013 | Comments ()

"Manhunt" on HBO at 8:00pm ET. This is a documentary about the hunt for Osama bin Laden featuring interviews with the CIA officers who tracked down him and his associates. The beginning details the efforts of a group called "The Sisterhood", a group of female intelligence agents who were the first to prove the existence of al-Qaeda and identify Osama bin Laden as its leader. So, a much nerdier and less dramatized version of Zero Dark Thirty.

"Family Tools" on ABC at 8:30pm ET. Series premiere. I looked up this show and as best I can tell from the description, the only redeeming quality in sight is that J.K Simmons is in it, playing the sort of gruff character he can probably do in his sleep. I'm far more excited for him to show up on Season 5 of "The Venture Brothers" but I have to wait until JUNE for that.

"Mythbusters" on Discovery at 9:00pm ET. 13th season spring premiere.

"The Americans" on FX at 10:00pm ET. First season finale.

"The Big Brain Theory" on Discovery at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. A new competitive reality series hosted by Kal Penn where teams are given challenges that require scientific and engineering knowledge to win. I'm looking forward to having a competitive reality series on the air that makes me feel intellectually inferior to the contestants as opposed to the opposite.

Genevieve Burgess knows that feeling dumb usually just means you're learning something new.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • This Big Brain Theory show is awesome. Even the commercials during it for like super smart stuff is awesome.

  • Ian Fay

Is it wrong that I find Amy, the leader of this week's red team, unspeakably hot when she's using a grinder?

Now you're reminding me of my best straight friend; his dream woman is Daryl Hannah with a doctorate in quantum physics.

  • No, not wrong. Especially not once you read her full bio: http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-sh... - PhD student in engineering, worked at NASA Robotics Lab? Be still my heart. (Doesn't hurt that she's currently a student at my alma mater, either.)

It is. But my brain still hurts.

  • e jerry powell

I just noticed that everybody on Big Brain has IQs over 120. And yet, they all wanted to be on reality television. For a prize that's onlly $50,000, when they could be on a reality show with stupid people for no less than $100,000.

    The mind boggles, no?

  • Genevieve Burgess

Honestly, though, these kind of people would never get on a typical reality series. They're not as "interesting" (read: as prone to drinking heavily and punching things) as the usual contestants.

Also, I'm sure this is half way to being a job interview for some of them.

Admit it, Joel Ifill is going to star in the reboot of Flashdance.

  • e jerry powell

No doubt, because on top of the $50K is an actual job at WET Design. And the show is, I dunno, somehow way classier than Trumpy's YUUUUUGE dog-and-pony show. It does seem that some of the nerds are capable of throwing at least a temper tantrum, if not furniture. It's been a while since I was in Physics I, so I had to change the channel when the math started making my brain hurt.

Plus which, Investigation Discovery is the channel where the nerds who are given to irrational behavior end up. Well, there and in prison, doing 25-to-life with no chance for parole.

Here's hoping we see much Hyneman skin!

I'd prefer Byron skin but whatever is your poison Powell...

Too bad it's a fake... Why is she wearing boys underwear?

    This is better:

  • e jerry powell

She certainly didn't wear a whole lot in this episode. Going out into the desert seems to have that effect on her.

  • e jerry powell

What, Kari doesn't show enough skin?
