5 Shows After Dark: Both of These People are Completely Terrifying

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | April 25, 2013 | Comments ()

"Community" on NBC at 8:00pm ET. Hands up, kids, who wants me to stop listing this? I know some of you consider it sort of painful these days.

"Glee" on Fox at 9:00pm ET. Renewed for two more seasons? And you know Ryan Murphy is scratching his head trying to figure out how you put a non-school shooting school shooting episode on the air and end up getting RENEWED. I'm guessing next season Will will start dating a student just to see if they can get away with it.

"Elementary" on CBS at 10:00pm ET.

"Hannibal" on NBC at 10:00pm ET. I actually wrote a piece for Persephone Magazine earlier this week about the fact that two characters in the show have been gender-flipped from the books. It doesn't matter too much that Dr. Alan Bloom has become Dr. Alana Bloom, but I am VERY interested by the fact that they decided to turn the male Freddy Lounds of Red Dragon into a woman for the TV series. Anyway, if other book readers (or viewers) have thoughts they'd like to share I'd love to hear them.

"Scandal" on ABC at 10:02pm ET.

Genevieve Burgess wouldn't mind seeing "Glee" take the "Nip/Tuck" option of going down in flames, actually.

Unpopular Counterpoint: I Still Like "Community" | Here's the New Most Galling Thing About Zach Braff's Kickstarter

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

I'm very conflicted about Freddie Lounds, because I know the character is meant to be despicable regardless of gender. But she is so thoroughly unpleasant that I want her commeuppance to land like a ton of bricks, and I don't know if she's adding anything to the show? Maybe it's progress that a woman can be so thoroughly unlikeable, as she uses her feminine wiles to manipulate people ... no, that's not a good thing.

But on the plus side, Hannibal is delightful. I'm curious about the daughter/guardian angle.

  • DataAngel

I'll just sit over here in the Elementary sandbox by myself.

  • ceebee_eebee

Why would I have to choose? They are the 2 best things going at the moment.

  • TheOtherGreg

    Elementary is a fine show!

  • toblerone

    You're not alone.

  • DominaNefret

Too much 10pm. Tonight is the Project Runway finale. I'm going to have to pick which other show to record an which two to illegally download/wait for on demand.

  • RilesSD

Anyone else have just a little tiny bit of a hard time understanding Hannibal? I wish Mads' upper lip was a little smaller. I love the show anyway though.

And again, Hugh Dancy for the Emmy.

  • DeltaJuliet

**raises hand** Me too. And I LOVE him, but I don't quite catch everything he says.

  • Mr_Zito

It's only two more weeks of Community, so there's no need to let it go now. By the way, tonight's is the one written by Jim Rash. I have no idea if that's gonna mean anything good, but there's that to look forward to.

  • Bert_McGurt

Good lord, can we get Jim Rash to run the show? That was by far the best episode of the season.

  • Green_Eggs_and_Hamster

I agree. If the rest of the season had been anything like last nights episode, I think we would all be like Dan Who? Wasn't he some guy who had a few good episodes before Community got really awesome.

Ok, I might be exaggerating a little, but last night really was the best episode in a long time, and all the better for being completely unexpected.

  • Bert_McGurt

Most of all - it FELT right. It felt authentic. The body-switching gag was well-done AND had a point.

  • Milly

It was perhaps one of the best episodes of the entire run of Community. It pulled through tropes from the show but made them fun and took them in new directions.

And I was actually laughing out loud during the episode, which hasn't been a common thing while watching Community for a long time.

I can appreciate it for the cleverness and wry humour, but rarely guffaw. And yes, guffaw. Such a funny word.

  • Conrad

This was the cruelest episode. By being the funniest episode this season it provides a glimmer of what might have been after the inevitable cancellation.

  • Mr_Zito

Not only the funniest, but it reminded us the kind of thing Community used to do: take a crazy premise and turn it into a funny and even moving story. Even the whole Troy and Britta relationship made sense (not as a relationship, but as a storyline). I suddenly hope for it to get another season, if we get one or two episodes like this, it's worth it.

  • babykangarootribbiani

glee doesn;t have much lower to sink to surpass going down in flames worse than glee. and call me awful, but i wouldn;t mind if the crazy stalker from season 5 of nip/tuck snuck in behind will and stabbed him jason vorhees style like she did to sean

  • TheOtherGreg

You could alternate listing Community and The Big Bang Theory, thereby keeping nerd rage levels high.

  • TheOtherGreg

    I enjoy both shows, BTW.

  • firedmyass

Can you go to a friend's house, or maybe a hotel, tonight? I... I can't even look at you right now.

  • 724wd

can i raise my hand so Glee goes away?

  • toblerone

As long as you hold it up for 2 more years.

  • Green Lantern

Y'know, I"m gonna stand up and say this; I'm still watching "Glee", and *I* was shocked it was renewed for TWO FREAKIN' YEARS. Frankly I'd just like the show to quietly run out of steam and collapse somewhere. Don't think I'll be following anymore after this season wraps. IMHO it's gone from "the little show that could" to a mess of scattered egos.

  • lowercase_ryan

Also: Do women wear tights/leggings/stockings like that? I'm decidedly unhip, as is my city, that's why I ask.

  • They do in the Bryan Fuller universe, and that is the ultimate and only fashion pinnacle to which I aspire. I just don't know where one buys those in real life or I'd have them on right now.

  • Also there are tons of people who sell cool tights on Etsy.

  • KC

I have an affinity for those weird cosmo tights that are so popular now. So pretty.

  • Those are awesome!

  • Rochelle

I have a pair of tights like that, probably less fancy, in purple. After several hours they can be painful on the feet.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Yes, people wear tights like that, and people even wear that crazy monochromatic but multi-patterned look. Check out modcloth. they have a ton of cool tights. So does Hue for Macy's. But we're pretty much getting out of tight season.

  • F'mal DeHyde

I found some in black. http://1couturehaus.com/502-la...

I think they look like a skin disease, personally.

  • Ooh - I like the black ones better. Now that you mention it, the red ones do look a little like a skin disease here, but I remember liking them better in the scene. They looked redder on Hulu. More blood colored. That doesn't really help their case for popularity, but it appealed to my fondness for the macabre.

  • TheOtherGreg

This is apparently episode 5 of Hannibal, Brian Fuller pulled episode 4 because it was too much.

  • toblerone

Yep and it's the weakest so far. Plus Jaye Tyler is AWOL.

Kacey Rohl / Abigail Hobbs is killing me with her prettiness.

“Elementary” on CBS at 10:00pm ET." - Is tonight's episode the beginning of Irene Alder / Natalie Dormer guest spots?

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

All of the women on this show are killing me with their prettiness. It's as if Bryan Fuller is casting just for me. And it's awesome.

ETA: And I don't even care if some of them have eaten people, either willingingly or unwittingly. It's cool, ladies, I'm progressive.

  • toblerone

Agreed, but this show's visual style goes the extra mile with her and Lara Jean Chorostecki (pale skin, freckles, gorgeous eyes) but not so much for Dhavernas (even though she has all three).

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

That's true, and I have to admit it seems odd, but for the time being I'm willing to believe there may be a point to it. It seems like it ought to be important that she's strangely washed out much of the time.

  • Take that back! Jaye Tyler is always the bestest. Even when she isn't. (*sigh* Sorry, I still miss Wonderfalls and can't always control my fingers when they type.)

  • toblerone

She is the bestest (probably one of my A.T.Fs both character and actress) but she is just washed out and dull so far on the show.

God only knows how mind melting hot Gillian Anderson is going to be when you factor in Fuller's visual style.

  • TheOtherGreg

It's end of term marking time, give me a break.

  • lowercase_ryan

Break given, I was just giving you shit. But you should watch those clips, they're pretty good. Not sure how necessary they are to connect the episodes, but they're definitely worth a watch.

  • cruzzercruz

I tried watching them, but it only amounted to 22 minutes and it felt like a cop out, I'm going to (Gasp) wait until the censored episode airs overseas, view that, then catch up with this week's episode.

  • TheOtherGreg

I'll definitely watch. This is a great show.
