5 Shows After Dark

“American Idol” on Fox at 8:00pm ET. The 400th episode and how many genuinely successful acts? Oh that’s right; two. That won, anyway, several other ‘also rans’ have gone on to have tremendous success which should tell you everything you need to know about how good “America” (in this instance “America” is by and large represented by teenagers with unlimited cell plans) is at picking what they want to listen to.
“Idina Menzel Live: Barefoot at the Symphony” on PBS at 8:00pm ET. See, I have nothing against Ms.Menzel and admire her work on the “Wicked” album and her top shelf choice of husband. BUT! The title of this special just hit on one of those dog-whistle centers in my brain that has to do with appropriate dress at a symphony concert. After spending four years in my University’s orchestra, I became downright curmudgeonly when confronted with individuals who felt comfortable showing up to our concerts in shorts and flip flops. It’s not just at the University level either, I went to a performance by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and there was a woman there wearing a pair of denim overalls. I love my comfy jeans and tee shirts too, but somethings you make an effort for if only to show respect for the people on stage who are generally wearing tuxedos or other expensive formal wear. SO! The point of all that was that the phrase “Barefoot at the Symphony” makes me irrationally annoyed and ranty. Unless it’s referring to a harpist because they tend to play barefoot and are stone cold crazy so I’m not going to be telling them to do anything different.
“Survivor” on CBS at 8:00pm ET.
“Happy Endings” on ABC at 9:00pm ET.
“The Soup” on E at 10:00pm ET.
