5 Shows After Dark: Whatever They're Paying Greg Louganis, It's Not Enough

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | March 26, 2013 | Comments ()

"Splash" on ABC at 8:00pm ET. I watched the first episode of this, and learned a few things. 1. Greg Louganis is a delight. 2. Whoever's designing the swimsuits for the contestants is either blind or vindictive. 3. The judges are mostly judging based on "heart" than actual talent, which is the only reason I can come up with for why Louie Anderson's impression of Humpty Dumpty got the go-ahead but Keisha Knight Pulliam got eliminated for having a fairly respectable dive. Anyway, only half the "celebrities" dove in the first episode, so look forward to Kendra Wilkinson, Ndamukong Suh, and some other people diving tonight.

"The Face" on Oxygen at 9:00pm ET. First season finale.

"New Girl" on Fox at 9:00pm ET.

"Justified" on FX at 10:00pm ET.

"Tosh.0" on Comedy Central at 10:00pm ET. I watched Daniel Tosh's stand up special the other night and it really cemented the gap between the audience he's playing to on "Tosh.0" and what he actually seems to be about. In his stand up special, he explicitly referred to women not being treated equally in our culture, called Kobe Bryant a rapist, and poked fun at racial privilege. He's not perfect, that infamous rape joke was a pretty big misstep, but it feels like where his stand up routine made the whole dude-bro personality part of the joke, "Tosh.0" is explicitly courting that audience. Anyway, he's still not my favorite but I am more confused on my overall opinion of him now than I was before.

Genevieve Burgess's book is now available on Kindle so that's what will be here this week.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

Daniel Tosh really, really, really likes money. Does that help?

  • ,

You left off the ! on Kendra!'s name.

It's there to make this astonishingly insipid woman seem interesting. Kind of like how car dealers no longer hold bland, boring, ordinary "sale"s anymore, they hold "Event!"s.

I am back and forth about Tosh as well. The whole wave of "daringly offensive" standups is really wearing on me, going all the way back to Sarah Silverman.

Greg Louganis IS a delight. I still won't be watching that show.

And THIS is why Happy Endings has been on hiatus for a month? I declare shenanigans.

  • Genevieve Burgess

There's a new episode of "Happy Endings" Friday at 8pm. So, it's not on hiatus anymore, but Friday night slots aren't good news either.

  • e jerry powell

    Quite bad news, in fact.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

Can we stop calling this show Splash? It is Falling Stars. Make it so.

  • I can barely watch diving during the Olympics. NO PART of "barely-trained celebrities jumping off a platform" is of any interest to me.

  • Bert_McGurt

Not Rudy! I always thought Lisa Bonet would be the first Cosby alum to show up on a half-baked reality show.

  • e jerry powell

Rudy has been cleaning up on game shows, though. She did a former child stars edition of the Weakest Link and whooped some serious ass, though I am sad to report that she was also on celebrity editions of Fear Factor and The Mole.

So she's really smart, but also a middle-ground famewhore.

Tempest Bledsoe was on Celebrity Fit Club, so your love for Rudy can remain untarnished.
