5 Shows After Dark

“The Big Bang Theory” on CBS at 8:00pm ET. I’ve never seen this show, but out of the people I know who have seen it I understand that opinions are pretty evenly split between it being an awesome show about nerds versus a show about how people who aren’t real nerds think nerds act. I guess which side you’re on depends on the nerds you know.

“Wipeout” on ABC at 8:00pm ET. Fifth season winter finale.

“Parks and Recreation” on NBC at 8:30pm ET.

“Lifeguard!” on the Weather Channel at 9:00pm ET. The Weather Channel’s website describes this as a docudrama about lifeguards in Southern California. This is tangentially tied to the general theme of “weather” because someone on the weather channel points out that weather affects when people go to the beach which affects the jobs of the lifeguards. Whatever. It doesn’t involve Jim Cantore standing down the forces of nature in any way so I’m not interested.

“Archer” on FX at 10:00pm ET.

The irony about Big Bang Theory is that for a show ostensibly aimed at nerds, its internal consistency is noticeably lacking. There's been many occasions where one of the "nerds", all possessing a minimum of a Masters in physics or engineering are clueless about something I learned during my Bachelors.

Now I'm giggling at the fact that I misspelled it as Bib Bang Theory, which of course is the Food Network show that panders to the lobster fetish crowd.

The Big Bang Theory is violently unfunny nerd-blackface.

Yes, The Big Bang Theory is unrealistic. It's a sitcom, get over it. Or watch Community, for it's documentary-like depiction of college life. Or Happy Endings, for a peek into the day-to-day life of average thirty-year-olds.

TheOtherGreg As a thirty year old Happy Endings doesn't give a particularly accurate view in to my life but it does have the great virtue of being at least reasonably funny.

With regards to Community, why some love it (well me, but I speak nerd so I will take liberties and speak for all natives), is that rewards you for your nerdiness, rather than taking the piss out of nerds, or at least what some people think nerds are.

Well, I'm as nerdy as the next guy, if the next guy is in the IT industry, and I like all three of the shows mentioned. It just seems to me some people are equating the term 'nerd' with 'smart'. Nerds are smart people with social awkwardness.

But yes, The Big Bang theory exaggerates the awkwardness in a different way than Community does. It's not to everyone's taste. And probably not aimed at as pointedly at nerds as Community is, so certainly it's open to being perceived as 'mocking', but maybe you should think of it as 'accessible'.

It doesn’t involve Jim Cantore standing down the forces of nature in any way so I’m not interested.

If Bear Gryllis needs rescuing, they send Jim Cantore.

If Chuck Norris is lost, Jim Cantore find hims.

When Black Dynamite can't satisfy all the bitches, Jim Cantore jumps right in and finishes the job.

Jim Cantore is the Angel of Death. Every time you see him, you know that something extremely nasty is only hours away.

My feelings on TBBT tend to vacillate from mild enjoyment to complete frustration, but I think it does have some potential if the producers would be willing to actually go somewhere with it. I'd recommend that they get rid of Howard, Raj and Amy, I find them all brutally unfunny. I might be in a minority there (or in a majority, depending on the crowd).

Jim Cantore can just can just stfu. Given my druthers, I'm all in for Stephanie Abrams in a hurricane in a tank top
