5 Shows After Dark: Worth it For the Hats Alone.

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | January 6, 2013 | Comments ()

"Downton Abbey" on PBS at 9:00pm ET. Third season premiere. I'd say "WOOO!" but I think that goes against the tenor of the show. Also, you know, basically everyone except Americans who have an aversion to pirating have seen this season but whatever, it's new to me!

"The Good Wife" on CBS at 9:00pm ET. Fourth season winter premiere.

"Revenge" on ABC at 9:00pm ET. Second season winter premiere.

"Happy Endings" on ABC at 10:00pm ET. Third season winter premiere. They're going to be burning off "Happy Endings" and "Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23" two a week which is... concerning. I mean, maybe they'll get the "Cougar Town" deal and move to a cable network, but I'm going to go light a candle for them just in case.

"Best Funeral Ever" on TLC at 10:00pm ET. I'm beginning to think that TLC has officially gone over to a sort of Swiftian satire. I mean, I hope.

Genevieve Burgess will be writing the date wrong for the next two months.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

Downton Abbey is one of the most compulsively watchable and stupefyingly asinine shows currently on the air. I've seen the third series and its Christmas special and as penance for watching the show I was sentenced to watching the show. And what a fetid little congress of disappointments pooled around me for the experience . I think it's time for me to perform a soap abortion on my relationship with this program because if I don't act soon, my womb will fester with biliousness from the inside out and ruin me with my own anger. I'll see all you will-be series three survivors on the other side--if you make it. Yeah, it's almost beyond certain that I'll be watching series four because I'm a sadist with no follow through.

I respectfully disagree. The hats, and I love a good hat, are not worth sitting through Downton, I read the plot summaries for season 3, after spending season 2 yelling at the TV, and we are out.

  • Amanda

Season 2 was a shambles. I think they need more than just Julian Fellowes doing the writing at this point. Halfway through S3 and liking it much more, although I doubt S1 will ever be matched.

  • Miss Laaw-yuhr

I came for the goodness (season one) but have stayed for the histrionics (seasons 2 et al). My new favorite thing is to quote Lady Mary-isms to my friends such as "I could have faced it, if only I had one more night of sleep" or "Don't you SEE, you're not truly *with* us!".

I also like to call Season 2 "The Tradegedy of the Footmen".

  • As I've mentioned to Dustin, whenever Downton Abbey comes on, I yell "Downton Motherfucker. Do. You. Watch it?" in a terrible imitation of Samuel L. Jackson. I'm all about the cognitive dissonance.

  • Monica

So I've never watched Downton when it aired, meaning tonight is the first time I'll be watching in real time. My PBS listing says "Masterpiece Classic" for 2 hours, starting at 9. Is this Downton? I really don't want to miss it so I'm hoping the always savvy Pajiba can help me solve this mystery.

  • Genevieve Burgess

Yes, that's Downton. It's part of the Masterpiece Classics series, so if you have a description available to you it'll list it as Downton Abbey, but the regular listing is "Masterpiece Classics."

  • TheOriginalMRod

    We are going Downton!

  • Blake

    Bob's Burgers - 8:30 on FOX.

One of the Best Comedies and the Best Animated series on Television (until Archer returns Jan 17th).

  • Milly

Don't Trust the Bitch is a decent show, but not outstanding (though JVDB is amusing) and so I won't miss it too much.

But Happy Endings? I'm baffled that it is on the cusp of being cancelled. It has five engaging characters, five characters who you root for and five characters whose lives must mirror those of the majority of people out there.

Five? Yes, no one likes Dave. He doesn't count.

  • Ley

Hey, I like Dave. Even the 15/16 non-Navajo Indian parts.

  • ViciousTrollop

I'm trying to decide whether we should all send ABC some sweet V necks (so they can get a taste of that sweet V high) or a ton of big ass candles to keep Happy Endings on the air.

  • Amanda

I think most of season 3 hasn't been up to snuff. I'm re-watching season 2 now and it's just so damn good.

  • draeton

If they cancel Happy Endings, I'm going to hip hop Santa all the way to ABC headquarters and open up a can of keeping it cazsh all over their faces!

  • ViciousTrollop

Remember to pop it and lock it.
