5 Shows After Dark: Going Off the Rails on a Crazy Train

By Genevieve Burgess | Miscellaneous | October 17, 2012 | Comments ()

"Arrow" on The CW at 8:00pm ET.

"My Giant Face Tumor" on TLC at 9:00pm ET. Look, say what you will about the programming choices being made on something ostensibly known as "The Learning Channel" but at least the titles leave nothing to the imagination. You really know exactly what you're getting into.

"Suburgatory" on ABC at 9:30pm ET. For those of you who are fans of the most uncomfortable father/daughter chemistry on television.

"American Horror Story" on FX at 10:00pm ET. Second season premiere. IT'S BACK Y'ALL! In a weird creepy asylum run by nuns with Jessica Lange as the HBIC, and I can't entirely piece together much else from the commercials other than it will be INSANE and fantastic. Also, I'm pretty certain that douchebag from Maroon 5 is going to have something horrible happen to him.

"Nashville" on ABC at 10:00pm ET.

Genevieve Burgess Is thrilled to have worthwhile television to write about again. At least for the moment.

"True Blood" As A Subversion of the Tragic Vampire Trope | The Superhero Yin and Yang: 10 Ways The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises Can't be Better than Each Other

Can we discuss the total mind-fuck that was the season premiere of AHSA? Okay, here we go! (SPOILER ALERTS!!!!!):

So Jessica Lange is a nurse/nun in this asylum in 1964.

Dude who played Tate (her son) in Season 1 is someone else in this season, married (in secret - it's 1964) to a BEAUTIFUL African American woman who is, apparently, abducted and skinned by aliens. He gets the blame (wasn't him) for killing her and like 3 other women, and winds up in the same asylum as his future mum (dundunDUN!). (What are you willing to bet he's actually Tate's dad?)

The original "lady of the house" from Season 1 (the chick the house was built for, Charles' wife) is a nurse/nun in the same asylum, and Jessica Lange is her superior. (Original "lady of the house" was long-dead by 1964.)

The psychic from Season 1 is a reporter-cum-patient (with an "alternative lifestyle" that nurse/nun Jessica uses to blackmail her into becoming a patient when her snooping over-steps its bounds), so Lord only knows what's going on there, unless we're getting into reincarnation and shit, which - with this show - is entirely possible. (Penance in one life for sins in another, etc...)

Dr. Doom there likes his experiments - reincarnation of Charles? - and there are pigs! PIGS!! I repeat, reincarnation of Charles?!?

Also, "play with me" girl looks suspiciously like the son Jessica had her lover kill in season 1.

This ep was a total mind-fuck. Someone, help me out with a different (alternate?) perspective.

p.s. I really enjoyed that douche-knocker Levine was dismembered and died in the premiere. Also, 30 cents-a-gallon for gas?!?!? Gobble my knob, complaining dude!!!! Gas for my car is over 5 bucks a gallon!!!

Already, this season is creeping me out way more than last season. Yikes. And the Catholic Church is gonna love it, too. Watching them shit a giant brick of outrage should be amusing.

    What is an HBIC?

  • bellaluna30

    Yup. Head Bitch In Charge.

  • Head B*tch In Charge

  • John G.

So, is this Jessica Lange's same character in a convent, or does Jessica Lange re-span in new timelines each season? Is it supposed to be the past and they're going to try and make her look young?

  • Robert

Brand new character and story. Ryan Murphy is just really loyal to talent,

  • Rocabarra

I haven't seen the first season of AHS but this second season sounds pretty cool. A friend told me I wouldn't need to watch the first season to understand this upcoming one. Thoughts/recommendations?

  • bellaluna30

You must, simply MUST SEE the first season!!! Rent it, buy it, watch it on the web, but is an ABSOLUTE MUST SEE.

  • Robert

Each season is going to be a brand new, self-contained story. The series is looking at the history of horror through the lens of American culture. Last season was the haunted house story in modern suburbia. This season is religious and psych ward horror in Salem. This season has a lot more potential for the exploration of camp, exploitation, and taboos.

  • Rocabarra

    Excellent! Thanks muchly!

  • JenVegas

Maaan I can't even watch the promos for this season of AHS without getting creeped out, I have no idea how I'm going to make it through the whole season. cantwaitcantwaitcantwaitcantwait!

  • bellaluna30

The whole "pried-open eye-balls" and people walking upside down on the UNDER side of the stairs had me thinking "I don't know, man."

  • So..."The Soup" it is...
