Pajiba's March Madness 2008 Contest: Catch the ... Whiskey, Baby (NinjaStar)!
As we did for the last two years, for no other reason than because we could, Pajiba is setting up another March Madness Pool. Again, the top scorer in the Pajiba bracket will win $50 and, eventually, a free Pajiba T-shirt featuring one of the new designs (once we get that set up). The prize money is doubled if the Arkansas Razorbacks win the tournament and you choose them in your bracket, because that’s the kind of jackass hometown fan I am.
Note another reminder: We are not branching out into sports. We simply understand that many of our readers are left out of office pools because they don’t exude the requisite machismo or obnoxiously wear their school colors on casual Fridays. We want the gamers, comic-book geeks, and “Firefly” fans to have a place where they can feel at home, too. As always, there is no skill whatsoever involved in March Madness Pools. Really. Pick your favorite sounding teams or the ones with the coolest colors — you have just as much a shot at winning as a dimwit basketball analyst. Some may tell you different, but it’s completely random dumb luck. Honestly.
To play, you will need a Yahoo ID, I believe. Click on this link to join the WhiskeyBabyNinjaStar Bracket (ID# 160732). The password is: pajiba
Finally, you have until tomorrow morning — sorry for the short notice. The “Madness” just wasn’t Mad enough this year, and it totally slipped under the radar.

that link is too specific; i think you need to go back a few pages and type in the group number, like this one:

Thanks, Aidan. I think it's fixed now -- type in the Group Number to Access the bracket. -- DR

I hate basketball. The end.
I'll still play though, cause I love me some brackets.
Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 1:27 PM
Yeah, It'll be fucking Arkansas vs. Temple in the finals. And I'll be throwing snowballs at you in Hell.
Posted by: insertclevernamehere at March 19, 2008 1:42 PM
Hee...aww, poor Temple.
Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 1:44 PM
Yeah, but this gaming, Firefly loving theater Geek, even if he wanted to play, would have no idea how. I'd be like my mother, picking the team that looked the nicest, had the prettiest uniform, or the fewest in its defensive line.
Posted by: Withnail at March 19, 2008 1:54 PM
Ditto, Withnail. Basketball is that one with hoops and giant bouncy balls, right?
They should bring back the ancient version of the game...and execute the losers. That'd make it much more interesting to watch.
I'll play, though...because I do anything Julie tells me to do.

Shadows, pierce your scrotum, renounce your love of Joss Whedon, and dye your hair platinum blonde with pink highlights!

Hey, I'm a Firefly-loving, video-gaming, sci-fi/fantasy adoring movie geek who happens to love me some hoops too. So don't let your geekiness hold you back, y'all.

Alright...but this crazy sub/dom internet relationship had sooooo better be worth it...
Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at March 19, 2008 2:13 PM
This is a crappy contest. If I wanted to play with balls, I'd get a date. And what's a bracket? Last time I checked, it was what was holding up my bookshelves, so my LPs doesn't fall on the floor.
Posted by: BWeaves at March 19, 2008 2:15 PM
No you aren't TK. You're a long haired-pot-smoking-flag-burning-America-hating-commie-and-terrorist-loving sicko.
Now, sit down, you're rockin' the boat.
Posted by: insertclevernamehere at March 19, 2008 2:16 PM
I will be participating. Basketball is probably the most annoying sport on the face of the earth because of all the squeaking, and I know NOTHING about the college ranks. i can however say this to all the people who, like me, know nothing.
Bill Simmons is a writer for ESPN.com and his wife routinely whoops his ass in every sports pick'em that they do and she has no idea what she's doing. (and admits it regularly on espn.com, including in her most recent column)She picks teams because of their colors, or because she has friends who went there, or they are from a fun city, or because she knows their fans are rabid, or because she saw "that guy's" name while flipping past the sports page in the paper and he plays for X team. Last year, I came in 6th place in my office pool, after being number 1 for 5 days. No money, but I picked at will and finished better than 100 other people who obsessed over it. I had no idea how I was doing except for the emails that the pool coodinator sent out every few days with updates. Besides...id you win, it's a free shirt and free money. Where's the down side?
Posted by: PissBoy at March 19, 2008 2:18 PM
insertclevernamehere please tell me that wasn't you.
And if it wasn't, awesome reference.
And if it was, I'm very upset with you.
Posted by: TK at March 19, 2008 2:19 PM
Hee. My mind is a sea of Mel Brooks dialogue and dirty thoughts, of course it's worth it. :p
Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 2:19 PM
This is a crappy contest. If I wanted to play with balls, I'd get a date.
AH HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 2:20 PM
We HAVE to play...do it for Patrick Swayze. Red Dawn is on AMC right mothereffing now!
Posted by: PissBoy at March 19, 2008 2:23 PM
Damn it! Why can't it be on when I'm home?
And I'm picking my teams by how hard their mascot's name makes me laugh.
Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 2:27 PM
This is one of the many things in life that I'm neither interested in nor have the vaguest idea of how it works. Can't we, like, predict the next celebrity to go completely apeshit or something along those lines?
Posted by: llism at March 19, 2008 2:31 PM
Or better yet, we can have a "What will Michael Bay remake next?" contest.
Posted by: llism at March 19, 2008 2:34 PM
Llism, I'll put money on his remaking The Sound of Music. Instead of disabling the Nazis' car, he'll blow that bitch right up.
Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 2:40 PM
Wow. That (completing my bracket) felt very random. I predict I go down in the first round.
And if UMBC does go all the way, well that's worth at least as much as $50 and a free t-shirt, because, how random would that be? I'd probably just turn around and spend those $50 bucks on more Pajiba t-shirts.
Oh, and one needs no knowledge of basketball to play the bracket game, you just need to be able to click your mouse on a college. About fifty times.
Posted by: tamatha at March 19, 2008 2:41 PM
All right, it's on.
Julie, you know I heart your ass, but do not eff with Temple. Those are the em-effing OWLS, baby. (I had to go hometown and pick 2 out of the 3 to win in the first round.)
Plus, I owe Temple for turning down the free ride they gave me, for which my mother still raises her wooden spoon in my direction.
Also, my sister picks her bracket every year based on the school's name. The less pedestrian, the better, she says.
Posted by: Nicole at March 19, 2008 2:43 PM
God I am such a dork. My bracket is Pajiba(!), because I don't know what the hell a bracket is, or what I'm supposed to enter. You're supposed to walk us through this whole thing from the very beginning Dustin, like I'm a dimwitted two year old.
Posted by: katy at March 19, 2008 2:49 PM
Oh wait, now I fixed it. I'm not a dimwitted two year old, just a crotchety and forgetful early 30-something. Now back to figuring out how the rest of it works.
My first sports pool ever! Woo hoo!
Posted by: katy at March 19, 2008 2:50 PM
Well, then Julie, if that's the case, you might as well choose UNC to win it all.
We are the Tarheels, after all.
Go HEELS.
Posted by: boo at March 19, 2008 2:51 PM
Julie, that's gonna be a hard one to top!
Posted by: llism at March 19, 2008 2:55 PM
Ugh. I can't believe I just picked UNC to take it.
I feel like I slept in vomit.
Posted by: TK at March 19, 2008 2:55 PM
Well, I thought I'd give this a try for shits and giggles, but I can't even figure out how to sign on, so screw it.
Posted by: BWeaves at March 19, 2008 2:58 PM
It was just an awesome reference, TK. Have you ever known me to say something horrible and offensive and off-color and lame anonymously? I have a reputation to uphold.
Posted by: insertclevernamehere at March 19, 2008 3:01 PM
It's ok, TK. I mean, it is hard to look directly into the face of GOPTOPUS. And by that, I mean this:
GO HEELS.
Posted by: boo at March 19, 2008 3:02 PM
D'OH!

Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 3:05 PM
I'm going to throw down the promise right now - if it's an Arkansas v. Temple final, Dustin and I will make some fantastic public bet here on the 'Jiba (given that those are our respective undergrads). Ain't gonna happen, no chance in hell, but it gives you all a reason to root for our teams.
Posted by: Seth at March 19, 2008 3:05 PM
Sign that you are a Tarheels fan: You don't know how to use tags properly. I'm just sayin' is all.
Insertclevernamehere - you rock.
Posted by: TK at March 19, 2008 3:07 PM
Ok, Seth, I'm just going to point out something real quick-like:
Your blue name goes to Pajiba.
I think we all know where that is, honey.
Oh, and TK?
You don't know who you're dealing with. That, and I'm way too lazy to preview.
Posted by: boo at March 19, 2008 3:09 PM
Sign that your team isn't good enough to go the the NCAA tourney: You bitch about tags on a movie review site.
BOO-YA.
Posted by: boo at March 19, 2008 3:11 PM
Anyone else experiencing temporary server issues, or am I just literally not even cool enough to do an frickin' online sweet sixteen bracket?
Posted by: feramones at March 19, 2008 3:16 PM
Well, that didn't even make any sense. And my team IS in the tourney, thank you very much. So I say Go Badgers! Just not very far.
Damn it.
Hey, I picked your stupid team over mine, ok? No need to be mean.
[sulks, kicks dirt with toe]
Posted by: TK at March 19, 2008 3:20 PM
TK, I picked the Badgers to win it all. My girlfriends from college and I gained a mild obsession with badgers after watching a Discovery channel special on them.
We liked the fact that they eat bees and have sex for days. We were bored a lot.
Posted by: Julie at March 19, 2008 3:22 PM
Basketball is probably the most annoying sport on the face of the earth because of all the squeaking
Oh, hee.
I spent most of my life in North Carolina (I miss it so!), where basketball is the State Religion.
They are so nuts about the sport that the college games are broadcast on radio. Not the sports stations, mind you; like, the Oldies Station that the supermarkets pipe through their PA systems while you shop. If you go shopping during a game you hear Basketball Audio wherever you go.
The obvious absurdity of that aside, a basketball game on audio sounds exactly like a gymnasium full of small rodents having a wild orgy.
Try it yourself: Tune in to a basketball game on your TV and close your eyes.
Hamsters. Gerbils. Guinea pigs. Maybe a squirrel here and there.
I don't really like basketball but I do really enjoy listening to the games.
Posted by: Jerce at March 19, 2008 3:31 PM
Not having any clue whatsoever about what to do, I just set it on random and let it go. So I don't know what teams are up there or not...
I hope I win!
Julie...I love badgers too...but for a completely different reason:
Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at March 19, 2008 3:40 PM
Jerce: Then you know me and my family, The Nuts. Well, my mom stays away, but my grandma makes up for it with a VENGEANCE. (Seriously, she called me at 6:30 this MORNING to ask if I filled out my brackets yet.)
Posted by: boo at March 19, 2008 3:41 PM
Oh, and the TV announcers annoyed me so badly that I would put the TV on mute and turn on the radio to hear the insta-report.
I KNOW. I'm a sick, sick person.
Posted by: boo at March 19, 2008 3:42 PM
I'm in mourning this year, since my Gators are off to the NIT, but I'll play anyway. Sigh. Maybe I'll go crazy and pick some teams I normally despise - like UCLA or Duke - to go all the way. Oh, who am I kidding, I can't even pretend to root for Duke.
Posted by: Kolby at March 19, 2008 3:43 PM
dude, what? UMBC is on there? i went there. we have a decent team at something this year? that *never* happens... Maryland is supposed to have the decent teams... we're just the bastard red-headed step child of the USM (university system of MD). weird.
shit, i didn't even like my school that much, but i guess i gotta play now.
Posted by: lizzieborden at March 19, 2008 3:45 PM
lizzieborden - I know, right? How can you not pick UMBC if they're in the playoffs (or whatever the proper name is)? Especially if Maryland isn't. Gotta give the home state some love.
Posted by: tamatha at March 19, 2008 3:57 PM
katy, me too! except my bracket was called 'whiskeybabyninjastar." I managed to quickly edit it though.
I don't even know what the shit a bracket is.
Can someone help the hopeless over here?
Posted by: isabelle at March 19, 2008 4:36 PM
tamatha- word. definitely gotta give the home state the love. and the alma mater, too!
have you ever noticed that we have some of the most, well, idiotic school mascots though? i mean, really? terrapins? and UMBC is the frigging chesapeake bay retrievers. yeah, ok, state dog... but a fluffy cuddly retriever does not a fiercesome mascot make. nor does a turtle.
i can't believe Maryland didn't even make it this year. and UMBC did. i'm floored. and i don't even care about sports.

Duke = Evil.

I've been shamefully inattentive to college basketball this year and thus will be restricting myself to the brackets on gofugyourself. Does this mean I have to turn in my tomgirl card?
Posted by: Kris at March 19, 2008 10:33 PM
Paulus = pallid sewer rat. I still don't believe Boozer graduated Duke. They blow no matter how long the day lasts.
Vote for ND? In honor of receiving a whiskeybabyninjastar tshirt. Freaks and geeks can like sports too...
Posted by: patchfire at March 19, 2008 11:04 PM
well, ive barely ever commented here, but i read the site everyday. i love college basketball, so this feature is awesome, this just makes pajiba even cooler in my eyes. oh, and i really hope i win that shirt.
Posted by: davelit98 at March 19, 2008 11:47 PM
Penn State traditionally sucks at basketball so I can't join in on the school pride. Somebody here must have gone to Louisville right, so I can claim to have picked them to win it all as a show of support right? Seems more dignified than the actual process of running the mouse up and down the list clicking the button like a chimp with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Posted by: Ulwais at March 20, 2008 2:18 AM
Okay, two things...
1) What happens now that we've filled out our bracket? Do we just have to wait and see how the actual teams do? (you can tell I've done this before, can't you?)
2) How are the shirts coming along? Are they close to completion? Anyone? PissBoy?
I'm so lonely...
Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at March 20, 2008 11:04 AM
Alright Shadows, what happens is the games start at 12:20 eastern time today. From then on, your bracket will update as games finish.
Games start today and run through Sunday night. Then the process repeats with fewer teams for the next 3 weeks.
Enjoy!!

Melody...we are in an exclusive club. We rule.
Posted by: PissBoy at March 20, 2008 11:17 AM
Shadows, Dustin, Skitt, and Rebeccah and I have been communicating over the last couple days about specifics surrounding graphics, formats, and what i need to get them printed so i can screen them. I have everything ready to go minus my shirt order's arrival. There will be S, M, L, XL, and XXL T's and S, M, & L tank tops if any girls want those. When I get them I plan on making about 20 or so of each size before I start the sales. We are looking good for everything to hit the ground running by the end of the month.
Posted by: PissBoy at March 20, 2008 11:22 AM

Ummm...sure, that sounds cool. Or sleeveless tees, better yet.

Yeah, I'm not seeing anything wrong with this. I approve.
Nicole + mechanical bull + Pajiba wifebeater...

I can only trust that you're not. Cuz...12-year-old boys? Not so hot. I'm very non-clergy...
Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at March 20, 2008 4:03 PM
lizzieb - If you're still reading this thread...
I love the mascots! They're not your run-o'-the-mill mascots.
Have you ever seen a snapping turtle in full snapping mode? Those suckers are fierce! (Is that word ruined b/c of ProjRun?) Really, you don't want to go anywhere near one. So, I like to think of Terrapins as a larger version of that.
As for retrievers. They are A) willing to jump into cold water to retrieve a dead bird, so you know, points for being willing to go to any/disgusting lengths to get the job done; B) any dog in attack mode is scary. So, I think they work. And we had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever when I was a kid, so special place in my heart.
Oh, and did I mention that I hate sports. (I have made an exception for baseball...)
I went north for college, and have never moved back. Glad to know there's at least one other Maryland girl on the site. :) (Though when I saw your alias, I thought that you might be from New Bedford, MA.)
Posted by: tamatha at March 20, 2008 4:20 PM
And by New Beige, I actually meant Fall River/New Bedford area.
Posted by: tamatha at March 20, 2008 4:24 PM
For those of us not interested in the NCAA championship, the Fug girls are doing a fugliest tournament, including brackets and seeding of contestants. If nothing else is interesting, they have links back to some of the ugliest, tackiest clothing ever seen on a red carpet, and some sharp, witty commentary.
Posted by: rlr260rr at March 20, 2008 4:34 PM
Hells yeah, the Fug girls are doing March Madness the Fug way. I would like a Pajiba shirt but I know nothing of college basketball or attempting to pick teams based on anything (skill, team colors, cutest boys running up and down the court) and I went to a basketball school - Go Blue Demons...to the N.I.T. if you're lucky - but I do know fug.
So good luck to all those of you playing to win or just for fun. I'll just wait for another contest to win a Godtopus Pajiba t-shirt or (gasp)whore myself out to purchase one.
Want some of this (licks lip seductively while fondling self); Mama needs a Godtopus t-shirt, baby.

Shadows, PissBoy is local. However, I would like to clarify: I am not built like a 12yo boy. I'm built like a 29yo blonde woman who does Pilates. Unfortunately, due to a back injury, I can't ride a mechanical bull.
