Interstate Anthems

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Living where I do — in the middle of fucking nowhere, geographically speaking — any car trip outside of town is necessarily a long car trip, what with actual civilization existing nowhere within a 4 hour radius (unless you count Syracuse, NY, which I don’t - no offense, Orangemenpeople). And now that I have a family and all, long spells alone in my car are a rare occurrence. But a couple of weeks ago, forced to drive to Syracuse to catch a plane that wasn’t toy-sized, hand-cranked, or required a running start of some sort, I found myself alone in an automobile for the first time in months.

And you know I rocked that shit, right? Air-drummed the steering wheel, banged my head like a goddamn ninny, and bellowed like a tone-deaf motherfucker playing Wembley stadium. I cranked that shit up, hooked up the iPod, hit shuffle, and skipped past all that weak shit. I had 90 minutes, goddamnit, and I wasn’t about to waste it on the usual alt-whiskey, croony, maudlin bullshit I have a tendency to listen to in the comfort of my own home. I needed Interstate Anthems, bitches. Clearly enunciated, simple (dumb) lyrics with a huge singability quotient and bombast. Lots and lots of bombast.

You feelin’ me? Five interstate anthems. Give them up, y’all.

I’ll start:

1) “Don’t Stop Believing,” Journey. There ain’t no better belt-your-brains out song in the world. For four minutes, I’m a city boy born and raised in South Detroit.

2) “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” Def Leppard. Nonsensical, easy-to-understand lyrics. “Take a bottle, shake it up … mumble mumble upple mumble UP!”

3) “Once in a Lifetime,” Talking Heads. If sung correctly (with David Byrne flourishes), it’s the perfect song to freak out other drivers passing you by.

4) “Flagpole Sitta,” Harvey Danger. The drums people! The drums!

5) “Black Cadillacs,” Modest Mouse. How much fun is it to belt out, “We were done done done with all the fuck fuck fucking around” while traveling at 80 mph?

Comments

Oooh, good one!

1. "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.

2. "Passenger Side" by Wilco

3. "Mickey" by Toni Basil

4. "Here it Goes Again" by OK Go

5. "Simarik" by Tarkan

Posted by: Siege at February 6, 2008 2:41 PM

These are the songs that make me drive faster than fast.

"Radar Love" - Golden Earring

"Pure Rock Fury" - Clutch

"Get Away" - Rocktopus

"Monkey Wrench" - Foo Fighters

"The Good, the Bad, and the Skinnee" - 2 Skinnee J's

"Bring the Pain" & "M-E-T-H-O-D Man" - Meth, and Wu-Tang(technically) respectively

Posted by: PissBoy at February 6, 2008 2:43 PM

Well, looky here, I finally made early to the party. Hell yeah.

1. TNT - AC/DC
2. Freak on a Leash - Korn
3. Best of You - Foo Fighters (yelled at the top of my lungs).
4. Hate to Say I Told You So - The Hives (one of the best things to come out of Sweden)
5. You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette (when I'm in a pissy, man-hating mood).

Posted by: jen310 at February 6, 2008 2:45 PM

(1) "Radar Love", Golden Earring. Driving home from college on the weekends, traveling from the outskirts of Atlanta to the heart of south GA, I never failed to find this song playing on a trip down...not once.

(2) "Flight of Icarus", Iron Maiden. Play it loud or don't play it at all.

(3) "Born to Run", Bruce Springsteen. 'nuff said.

(4) "Bohemian Rhapsody", Queen. An epic song for any epic trip. And I dare anyone to resist the headbanding urge.

(5) "Yellow Ledbetter", Pearl Jam. For the quiet reflection portion of driving through no-man's-land...no need to sing along, because you can't understand a flippin' word in the first place.

Posted by: RKB at February 6, 2008 2:46 PM

All excellent songs, and great suggestions for my next road trip! My choices:

1. Megalomamniac - KMFDM

2. Rattle My Cage - Rehab

3. Walkin On The Sun - Smashmouth

4. Toxicity - System of a Down

5. Thoughtless - KOrn

Hmmm....not that I'm into modern heavy rock or anything....

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at February 6, 2008 2:47 PM

Dustin, I believe Rochester counts as civilization and it's only an hour and a half from Ithaca (although, really, who would want to go there if you don't have to?).

1. The Beatles - Got to Get You Into My Life
2. Led Zeppelin - That's the Way
3. Fugazi - Waiting Room
4. Bad Religion - Fu@k Armegeddon...This is Hell
5. The Guess Who - Clap for the Wolfman

bonus track: Louis Prima - Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody

Posted by: thejodester at February 6, 2008 2:47 PM

I drove from Philly to San Francisco 5 years ago with two of my best friends, and for the life of me I can barely remember anything we listened to. Probably because we were drunk on red bull and the stench of swamp ass. I must say though, listening to the Beatles' One album by myself as my friends napped in the backseat and the sun rose over the mountains of Utah is
one of my favorite memories EVER.

1. Learning to Fly-my favorite Petty song, it sounds even better in the car.

2. Jesus of Suburbia, Green Day: it's 18 hours long and sounds like 15 different songs...whether I'm shouting the beginning or singing the melody of "dearly beloved" this is always one of my favorites.

3. Plowed, Sponge: because it's badass and a great "banging the steering wheel" tune.

4. Kasmir, Led Zepplin: for the sexy bass.

5. Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Cyndi Lauper: we used to scream this in the car in college.

Posted by: Julie at February 6, 2008 2:48 PM

Great diversion! It was really hard to pick only 5, but here they are.

1. Ben Folds Five "Underground"
2. A- Ha "Take On Me"
3. David Bowie "Life On Mars"
4. Minus the Bear "Absintha Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse"
5. Zox "Carolyn"

Posted by: Erin at February 6, 2008 2:50 PM

(I have no idea how to say it but I love the German opening)
"Nihilistic mystic, apostolic alcoholics, messianic manics, cataclysmic and prolific."

Great call on the KMFDM Shadows!

Posted by: PissBoy at February 6, 2008 2:51 PM

1. Shine On--Van Halen
Just seems appropriate for sunny day driving.

2. Carry On, My Wayward Son--Kansas
Perfect for a hilly drive and a breezy day.

3. Uneasy Rider--Charlie Daniels
Flashbacks to my father and a 1986 Corolla with a brown tartan interior.

4. William Tell Overture-Rossini
Very useful for those mornings you need to get your ass in gear and to the office early.

5. Bohemian Rhapsody-Queen
Sing this one with your windows rolled down, and count how many stoplight neighbors start mouthing the lyrics next to you.

Posted by: Aratweth at February 6, 2008 2:53 PM

1. Have to agree with "Don't Stop Believin'". (Un)fortunately, my favorite bar plays it every night, so I get to sing along more frequently than solo car trips. I'm not sure the bar appreciates this.

2. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. It's much more fun to do all parts solo. Include dramatic gesturing for maximum rubbernecking by other cars.

3. "Dream On" by Aerosmith. I like to sound as if "sing" has several syllables.

4. "That Voice Again" by Peter Gabriel. Have to really belt out "only love can make loooooooooooove" extremely loudly.

5. "She's Crafty" by Beastie Boys. There aren't too many places other than my car where I would be willing to sing that. I don't always remember the words & I don't exactly have a gift for rap.

I also love singing female wailing-types of vocals (Tori, Bjork, Dead Can Dance) but that is not song-specific. Fortunately, for the benefit of people who can hear, I drive alone a lot.

Posted by: staramour at February 6, 2008 2:53 PM

I concur with "Black Cadillacs."

I usually listen to albums (and since I live in the god damn middle of nowhere, there's usually plenty of time to listen to several).

"Wincing the Night Away" by The Shins (of course)
"Ben Folds Five" by Ben Folds Five
"Speakerboxx/The Love Below" by Outkast
Anything by Cake or Rufus Wainwright, because most of my friends hate both of them, but I love them.

Posted by: Cady at February 6, 2008 2:53 PM

Not in order, and not all with names, but here goes.

1.) This Must Be The Place- Talking Heads. I'm sooooo happy...

2.) Mother- Danzig

3.)Rooster- Alice in Chains. You know he ain't gonna die.

4.)Here I Go Again- Whitesnake

5.)Genie, I'd like to ask you for three more wishes. Seriously, just five? I can't do it. But as a stand-in...
Streetcarp- Deftones. Truly.

Posted by: that bees chick at February 6, 2008 2:54 PM

Wow...totally missed that whole "don't insert paragraph breaks" note until it was far too late.

Posted by: RKB at February 6, 2008 2:54 PM

Julie...dammit! I need some Jesus of Suburbia meself. I could never make a list like this with only 5 tracks. That's anus. I'd need like 50 easy...and then another 50 after I read everything people remind me about.

Posted by: PissBoy at February 6, 2008 2:55 PM

1) Get Up by Sleater-Kinney. I don't know, but somehow this really is fun music to listen to in my car.
2) Layla by Eric Clapton. Just imagine a slow mo police chase to the end of the song, which though it never happened is just perfect.
3) Ticket to Ride by The Beatles. It's a fun song that reminds me of driving in one way.
4) 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins. This song reminds me of being young and remembering the past. I could hear this one late at night when everyone is sleepy.
5) Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. C'mon, who wouldn't want to scream along to this one?

Posted by: Kamakaze Feminist at February 6, 2008 2:56 PM

Totally awesome comment diversion, dude! Seriously, whenever I have to drive to my parents' in Chutica I inevitably arrive tone deaf and with a sore throat.

1. I gotta second the Journey love, although mine's reserved for "Separate Ways." Oh yeah.

2. "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" - Pat Benatar

3. "My Sharona" - The Knack

4. "Candy" - Cameo

5. "Living on a Prayer" - Bon Jovi

Posted by: Kolby at February 6, 2008 2:56 PM

1."Take the Money and Run", Steve Miller Band-My best friend in high school had Steve Miller's greatest hits in constant rotation in her car's tape deck. (Yeah, that's right. Tape deck.) I have fond memories of bopping along on a Friday night warbling "Ooooh, take the money and run. Ooh, Ooh, Ooh."

2."Professor Booty", Beastie Boys-In college I drove a gold 87 Volvo sedan I christened Chinquita. On sunny afternoons, I loved to cruise around the sleepy little 'burg blasting "Check You Head" from my mackin' ride.

3."Stop", Jane's Addiction-Another greatest hit from my ChinquitaMobile days.

4."Atom Bomb", Fluke- One of the very first commercials for the New Beetle featured this song, and whenever I played it in my silver SpaceMobile, I think she got a little extra boost. Reverse engineered from UFO's indeed.

5."Burn", Nine Inch Nails- I was listening to this song while driving through an insane summer storm, so intense I could barely see the twisty backcountry road in front of me. Lightening struck a huge old tree on the side of the road, setting fire to it. That was some shit right there.

Bonus track: "House of Wolves", My Chemical Romance- Since I bought it over a year ago, "The Black Parade" has occupied space three on my CD changer. It's also one of my son's favorite songs. Even back when he was a wee infant, he'd grin like a doofus for MCR.

Posted by: Alabamapink at February 6, 2008 2:57 PM

1. "Summer of 69" by Bryan Adams
2. "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane
3. I second the "Bohemian Rhapsody", RKB, if only for the Wayne's World association
4. "Panama" by Van Halen, for the potential headbanging for passengers

And for nostalgia's sake, a couple of my friends and I took a road trip up north to cottage country when we were still in high school and I remember clearly singing along to:
5. "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne. Yeah.

Posted by: Mary at February 6, 2008 3:00 PM

1. Boston - More Than a Feeling - I think its all about the clapping.

2. The Who - Baba O' Riley - greatest rock song ever. period.

3. Guns N' Roses - November Rain - the interlude...the piano, the chanting, the face-peeling guitar. If that wasnt made for highway driving I dont know what is.

4. The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go - I defy you make it through this whole song without car-dancing.

5. and of course I must agree on the Don't Stop Believin'. That dates back to family road trips with my three sisters all singing in the backseat at the top of our lungs to a worn out cassette. Good stuff.

Posted by: MG at February 6, 2008 3:00 PM

1. "Pumpin' On Your Stereo" - Supergrass. I just can't keep from shaking my ass when this comes on, even if I am behind the wheel.

2. "B.O.B." - OutKast. Another ass shaker. I like it loud and I like to sing along in a high voice to the chorusy part.

3. "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" - The Darkness. I played this song so much while pregnant, when my daughter heard it for the first time outside of the womb, she cocked her head in recognition and demanded to hear it several times in a row. Mommy complied and we rocked our fuckin' socks off. Great road song because of the guitars and the falsetto chorus.

4. The entire Tenacious D album is excellent for speeding, screaming lyrics, and not being able to hear anything outside of your vehicle.

5. "Keep Fishin'" - Weezer. This one makes me sing loudly and drive a little too fast while I bounce from side to side. In the seat, not on the road.

Posted by: Dangle McGee at February 6, 2008 3:01 PM

I have a bunch, but more interesting is the one song I WILL NOT sing in a car by myself: American Girl, by Tom Petty. Between Silence of the Lambs, getting my car sideswiped when I was singing it by myself, and a friend falling and hurting herself while singing it alone, I'm convinced it's bad luck to sing this song alone if you're female.

Posted by: Octothorp at February 6, 2008 3:01 PM

1. The entire Journey Greatest Hits album, plus Feelin' That Way/Anytime

2. Twilight Zone - Golden Earring (I prefer this one to Radar Love)

3. Mr. Roboto - Styx

4. Don't Stop Me Now - Queen (Awesome zombie stomping music. Hey Vermillion, how are you doing there?)

5. A tie between Shanghi Honey by Orange Range (I understand just enough to know they're dirty, dirty boys, and I love it.) and Shell by Bana (Awesome guitar, angsty angsty lyrics. Oh, the pain.)

Posted by: pinkcheese at February 6, 2008 3:02 PM

"Through the Fire and Flames" - DragonForce. I don't care how lame it is but that song makes the drive fucking epic, man!

"My Maria" - Brooks and Dunn. I just love this song. Something about just causes me to screech out Maria, when I know that no self-respecting bass (not a baritone) should ever attempt that upper registry. 'Tis horrible, but I love the song.

"(Don't Fear) The Reaper" - Blue Oyster Cult. I wanna be like Romeo and Juliet. I just gotta have this song.

"Cowboys from Hell" - Pantera. It's fucking Pantera, need I say more?

"My Favorite Game" - The Cardigans. This one dates back to my love and joy in the Gran Turismo 2 experience. The freeway never looked so beautiful listening to this song.

Posted by: ScarletKnight at February 6, 2008 3:02 PM

Awwww, hellz yeah bitches! Here are my fav 5 road trip tunes:

1. Chop Suey! - System of a Down. I have no idea what they're saying (does anybody?), but Christ on pita, that gets my blood pumping.

2. Darling Nicky - Foo Fighters. Any woman that makes you sign a waiver before you Google her Yahoo is aces in my book.

3.Attack - 30 Seconds to Mars. You can "Jared Leto's a douchebag" all you want, but that song rocks my socks.

4. These Days - Alien Ant Farm. These guys threw an impromptu show directly across from a Hip Hop awards show goes. That warrants automatic rotation on my I-pizzle. Yeah, I said "I-pizzle".

5.Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand. I just dig it.

Posted by: Manny at February 6, 2008 3:03 PM

Pissboy-oh how I love that song. And same here, we're all discussing this diversion at work and laughing about how there should be a minimum of like, 100 we can list.

Living on a Prayer!! Good one Kolby.

I just remembered a song from our San Francisco road trip-California Dreamin, the Mommas and the Pappas. LOVE.

Ooh! And one that makes me look like the biggest asshole, and yes I have this on CD...Poor Unfortunate Souls, from The Little Mermaid.

Posted by: Julie at February 6, 2008 3:04 PM

1. Thunder Road, Springsteen
2. Shout, by I don't really know who. This is especially good for solo trips because it essentially just keeps looping back on itself and you can sing it for half an hour if you want.

And then three straight from the high school files:

3. Banditos, the Refreshments
4. Santa Monica, Everclear
5. Possum Kingdom, the Toadies

Posted by: Bullfrog at February 6, 2008 3:04 PM

Oooh...yeah, Cady...ditto on anything by Cake. It helps that you don't have to sing for real :)

PissBoy...that bit may be my favorite part. I can't help belting it out and making robotic head gestures at the same time. I'm pretty sure the people around me think I'm spasming.

If I have the time, I also pop in any number of female singers as well, and try to sing those...but I won't embarrass myself further by naming them.

Posted by: Bullfrog at February 6, 2008 3:06 PM

I'm sticking with the newer stuff that's been blasting through my car in recent months.

Bombast!!

"The Suffering," Coheed and Cambria

"Hush Hush," The Spill Canvas

"This Is How We Do," All Time Low (at a painfully short 2:29. Give me another chorus, dammit!)

"Halfway to Midnight," Blacktop Mourning

"Feathers," Coheed and Cambria

Rock on.

Posted by: Sean at February 6, 2008 3:08 PM

My picks are rather random since I don't have a list of songs off the top of my head.

Dashboard - Modest Mouse, but also anything off of Good News For People Who Love Bad News

Paranoid Android - Radiohead. This song reminds me a lot of Bohemian Rhapsody in its concept.

Odelay (the whole album) - Beck, while driving through the Arizona desert on the way to the Grand Canyon, with the sun setting in the distance.

Just about anything by the Beastie Boys.

Posted by: katy at February 6, 2008 3:09 PM

Manny - I looooove Franz Ferdinand. That's a frequent commute home album. I love Michael. hehehe

Posted by: pinkcheese at February 6, 2008 3:10 PM

The effort of limiting it to five would send smoke from my ears, so I'll just quickly drop a few favorites -- the first Ben Folds Five album is made for being in motion. So is Son Volt's Trace -- the first track, "Windfall," is maybe the most appropriate highway song ever written ("may the wind take your troubles away / may the wind take your troubles away/ both feet on the floor, two hand on the wheel / may the wind take your troubles away"), but it might be too quiet for Dustin's requirements. Go with "Route" instead, then -- it rocks, and also has great driving lyrics.

Oh, OK, here are five that are highway appropriate, musically and lyrically:

"Melissa" -- Allman Brothers
"Go Your Own Way" -- Fleetwood Mac
"Bobby Jean" -- Bruce Springsteen
"Midnight Train to Georgia" -- Gladys Knight & the Pips
"Escape From New York" -- Chris Mills

Posted by: JMW at February 6, 2008 3:12 PM

@Bullfrog

Kudos on the Refreshments. That's one of those albums from which I know every single lyric to each and every song, and sing them all every time I listen to it. So underappreciated.

Posted by: Sean at February 6, 2008 3:13 PM

Octothorp...heeeee. That's quite paranoid of you :)

My and my younger brother driving home from my dad's on Christmas Eve: We Didn't Start the Fire. We were having a contest to see who knew the most words (I won, suck it Andy).

If I'm with my friend Dawnie we inevitably sing What's Going On by the Four Non Blondes...we both hate this tune but it reminds us of each other, there isn't a week that goes by without one of use texting the lyrics.

Posted by: Julie at February 6, 2008 3:14 PM

as soon as i saw the title of this diversion i started singing don't stop believin'! and then i clicked and noticed it was your number 1!

the rest:

fire woman the cult
ana ng they might be giants. i don't want the world, i just want your half.
high plains drifter the beastie boys. i'm a kleptomaniac k-mart shoplifter. it's hard to keep up with them in this song!
do the evolution pearl jam

Posted by: kelley at February 6, 2008 3:17 PM

Ok, I CAN'T look at the comments, because I'm so easily swayed. SO, here are my only-me song choices:

1. "What's Going On" by Four Non Blondes. I don't care who you are, this is just a rocking song that I can't help singing at the tippy top of my lungs.

2. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. I will sit in the car longer than necessary just to hear the entirety of this song.

3. "As Heaven Is Wide" by Garbage, from their debut album. BEST. ANGRY. SONG. EVER.

4. "Traveling Without Moving" by Jamiroquai. Sex on a CD.

5. "Back to Black" by Amy Crackhouse. Sung by a crackhead; still worth buying the album.

God, I want a road trip.

Posted by: boo at February 6, 2008 3:19 PM

"Raspberry Beret" - Prince: I don't know, it's just something about the synthesized drums that gets me very time.

"Airbag" - Radiohead: It's such an intense intro that just sticks with you.

"The Next Movement" - The Roots: Fun to sing along with.

"A.K.A.I.D.I.O.T." - The Hives: My unofficial theme song. If you've never heard of it, I guarantee that every Pajiban would agree with the message of this song.

"Born of A Broken Man" - Rage Against the Machine: Perhaps one of their best songs. Listen to the live version off Live at The Grand Olympic. Awesome

Posted by: jonr at February 6, 2008 3:20 PM

Had to come out of lurking for this one.

1. Thunderkiss '65 - White Zombie (is that the name??) I swear I'll had the spedometer pegged if I don't watch it.
2. Possum Kingdom - Toadies
3. Strawberry Wine - Deana Carter
4. Loser - Beck
5. Piano Man - Billy Joel

Bonus: Anything by Prince from 1999 or Purple Rain. Know every word to every song.

Posted by: michellemybelle at February 6, 2008 3:20 PM

I love music so much I could puke. Here goes:

1. "Boys of Summer" the Ataris Version

2. "Perfect Drug"/"Get Down, Make Love" NIN

3. "Yellow Ledbetter" leading into "Baba O' Reily" off of the Pearl Jam live disc (unsure of which one)

4. "Faith" Limp Bizkit

5. QOTSA - pretty much anything... L-O-U-D!

Bonus: Not a Dylan fan per se, but listening to the album "Highway 61 Revisited" while watching the sun come up was perfect. I was driving from Texas to Colorado, the scenery was astounding, all four windows were down (no air), and the only article of clothing I had on was a tattered pair of cutoffs. I had a giant fucking grin for miles...

FUCK! Skittimus, thanks for reminding me of QOTSA!!! I will listen to anything Josh Homme does, even if its him peeing in a toilet bowl...

Posted by: boo at February 6, 2008 3:24 PM

1. Sausalito Summer Nights, Diesel. FAV road trip song of all time!
2. Steal My Sunshine, LEN. On a HOT day, perfect.
3. Fat Bottom Girls, Queen. Easy to get a speeding ticket though.
4. Halcyon, Chicane. Fastest way to get to Camp Homo (I am so I can say that)
5. Reelin' in the Years, Steely Dan. Preferably in a convertible.

Could go on, and on....

Posted by: Bub at February 6, 2008 3:26 PM

Santa Monica - Everclear (good call Bullfrog)
Touch Me - The Doors
The Move - The Beastie Boys
Breathe - Anna Nalick
Smoke Baby or Striptease - Hawksley Workman

And one of my old-time favourite driving songs was "What Would Brian Boytano Do?" from the South Park movie.

Posted by: MeggieMoo at February 6, 2008 3:26 PM

Oh, you wouldn't believe the air EVERYTHING I do in my car (or, at least, when I had a car) when on the long drive somewhere. So this'll be very fun! ...and now I all of a sudden cannot think of a single song.....okay.

1. The Darkness - "I believe In A Thing Called Love" Squeeling in the high pitched whine is pretty much unbeatable in the car. Plus, three, count 'em, THREE guitar solos!

2. Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone" Come on, it fucking ROCKS. That's all.

3. Smashing Pumpkins - "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" - That chorus! Hot damn, that's an awsome AND bodacious chorus!

4. Quiet Riot - "Cum On Feel The Noise" This is the best song to sing directly at other people on the road. My sister and I did that once, and the people in the other cars were cracking up (Yes, there were two of us, so what?)

5. Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody" The ultimate sing-a-long to do by yourself...especially when you can't really sing.

Posted by: alexsa's balloon at February 6, 2008 3:26 PM

"She's So Cold" - Rolling Stones

"New Frontier" - Counting Crows

"Respect" - Aretha Franklin

"Chains" - Fleetwood Mac

"Rooster" - Alice In Chains

I couldn't look at the comments either Boo. It was hard not to put "Back to Black" on my list because I could still see your comment.

Posted by: Smokin at February 6, 2008 3:26 PM

Jesus Christ you people have some shitty taste in music.

First of all, Journey sucks. Everything by Journey sucks and always has. Journey is the second-shittiest band to come out of the 80s. No arguments; I don't want to hear it. I was THERE. (The first, of course, is Bon Jovi. Gaaaah.)

For Christmas, I received $100 in credit on iTunes. I am having a hard time spending $100 on iTunes because I already own pretty much everything I ever want to hear more than once. I figured I might get some good leads from this Comment Diversion...

...but I've been sitting here sampling titles off you people's lists, and I have to tell you: Jesus Christ you people gots some shitty taste.

"Radar Love" is good, yeah. "Possum Kingdom" is the shit for sure. But overall you people are making me weep over here.

Go find "Flirtin' With Disaster" by Blackfoot and go for a drive. Then go clean out your goddamn CD racks.

Posted by: Jerce at February 6, 2008 3:27 PM

"Keep the Car Running," The Arcade Fire - it makes me drive must faster than is legal.

"Stars," Hum - I'll sing it very loudly and then headbang spastically during the guitar solo. I fucking love this song and they turned it into a Cadillac commercial. The hell?

"Army of Me" Bjork - Great when I'm weaving, pissed-off, through Philly traffic.

"Wonderlust King" Gogol Bordello - Makes me drive fast and also scream "Dadadadada dadadadada dah" then imitate the violins.

"Terrapin Station" the Grateful Dead - this is the perfect song for driving through lonely mountain roads in the sunshine. It's 15 minutes long, and when I keep hitting repeat, it can take up most of the drive.

that new Killers song, Tranquilize, may make it on my list pretty soon.

Christ. I once made a 287 song playlist for just this purpose. You want FIVE? Are you fucking kidding? Fuck it, you can have six.

Born In '69 - Rocket from the Crypt

Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution - AC/DC

Keep The Car Running - Arcade Fire

Let's Go - Tonedeff

Mississippi Breaks - Mule

The Reflecting God - Marilyn Manson

Harsh.

This is a fun one!!

1. American Girl by Tom Petty
2. Shoulder to the Wheel by Saves the Day
3. 25 Cent Giraffes by Lifetime
4. Party, My House, Be There by MxPX (the above three remind me of the summer of my freshmen yr of college when responsibility was not a word in my vocabulary)
5. In the Morning by Built to Spill
Such Great Heights by the Postal Service
6. American Music by the Violent Femmes

Posted by: jennyebnl at February 6, 2008 3:30 PM

"'Army of Me' Bjork - Great when I'm weaving, pissed-off, through Philly traffic."

Theresa...we've probably cut each other off while simutaneously singing this :p

Taper Jean Girl-Kings of Leon
Ventura Highway-America
Immigrant Song-Led Zeppelin
Walk Like an Egyptian-The Bangles
Possum Kingdom-Toadies

PAAARTY POOOOOOPER!

Now why don't you mail me your iTunes gift card if you're going to so fucking smug.

Posted by: Alabamapink at February 6, 2008 3:31 PM

3. "As Heaven Is Wide" by Garbage, from their debut album. BEST. ANGRY. SONG. EVER.

Damnit, boo...that was one of my unnamed female songs I secretly sing when by myself.

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at February 6, 2008 3:33 PM

Yay Shadows!! No shame; everyone should enjoy that song; and as far as I'm concerned, Garbage is one of the best bands to ever come out of the 90s. A supergroup, if you will.

Posted by: boo at February 6, 2008 3:36 PM

Forgot one from my senior year of high school...

La Vie Boheme from the Original Broadway Soundtrack of Rent. How could I forget that one??

Posted by: jennyebnl at February 6, 2008 3:36 PM

Damn, got to agree with Bohemian Rhapsody, just because you have to start headbangin' ala Wayne and Garth. And, yes, "Layla" because I freakin' love that song and I associate it with helicopters chasing me all day. However, some of my choices are going to be very, very strange:

1) Love is a Stranger---Eurythmics just sounds like sex

2) Defying Gravity---Wicked Soundtrack for when I am pissed off and want to scream at somebody

3) Hot for Teacher--Van Halen Dorm room memories.......

4) Who are you? ---The Who do I need a reason?

5) Madness----anything...complete insanity.....

bonus points......for freaking people out, Plastic Surgery Disasters by Dead Kennedys or Wall of Voodoo

Posted by: dammitjanet at February 6, 2008 3:38 PM

Heavy Metal - Hagar.

Diary of a Madman - Ozzy

For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica

Powerslave - Iron Maiden

War Pigs - Sabbath

Posted by: denadn03 at February 6, 2008 3:39 PM

1. "Laura"-Scissor Sisters
2. "Freedom '90"-George Michael
3. "Respect"-Erasure
4. "Mississippi Goddamn!"-Nina Simone (I live in Georgia and used to live in Mississippi)
5. "Always on My Mind"-Willie Nelson (Single greatest song to cross the Mississippi River too)

Yes, yes, I'm a gay man from Texas.

Posted by: courtney at February 6, 2008 3:40 PM

Reading through all of the comments made me think of a few more. 5 really isn't enough...

The Roots -- The Seed 2.0
Bruce Springsteen -- Rosalita

Posted by: thejodester at February 6, 2008 3:40 PM

I also live out in the middle of nowhere...but some or my songs are unusual. The first is from Inside Man, and I'm completely obsessed with it:

1. Chaiyya Chaiyya by Dil Se
2. Fortunate Son - CCR
3. Footloose - Kenny Loggins...hell this song is good for ANYTHING!
4. Hooked On A Feeling - Neil Diamond

And for those long, peaceful night drives...

5. Light of the Moon - Joel Plaskett Emergency

Posted by: citizen_cris at February 6, 2008 3:43 PM

Octothorp...i think Petty may be cursed! I can't listen to 'You Wreck Me'. I was in 2 car accidents in 1 year when i was 17. That song was playing. Never again.

2. Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine
3. Closer - Nine Inch Nails

ScarletKnight: I second the use of "My Favorite Game" as a bitchin' driving song. Also:

2. Johnny Ryall / Beastie Boys
3. Ashes / Embrace
4. It's The End of the World... / REM
5. The Laws Have Changed / The New Pornographers

Posted by: AC at February 6, 2008 3:49 PM

Oh, this brings back so many memories of driving around with friends because there was NOTHING TO DO in Utah at night. This was, of course, before gas was $3,000,000,000 a gallon.

1. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen - I know it's been mentioned a bunch, but it's really a classic.

2. What's Going On by 4 Non Blondes - This will forever remind me of driving back from Durango with my friend Arrakis. We played this song three times in a row and belted it at the top of our lungs. It was awesome

3. Take off Your Clothes by Morning Wood - it's just fun. And they looks you get! Especially if you sing it to the car next to you at a red light :)

4. Kiss Off by Violent Femmes - great angry music!

5. I can't pick just one song to end with. When I'm driving just by myself I usually will rock out to the Dresden Dolls or some old songbook-era stuff.

Posted by: Cass at February 6, 2008 3:50 PM

1. Blur - "Song 2"

2. AC/DC - "Hell's Bells"

3. Tool - "Aenima"

4. Concrete Blonde - "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)"

5. Harvey Danger - "Flagpole Sitta"

Posted by: CptCrckpot at February 6, 2008 3:52 PM

1. "Tom Sawyer" - Rush
2. "Red Barchetta" - Rush
(Hey, I like to airdrum and Rush is great for that.)
3. "Bullet the Blue Sky" - U2
4. "Take it Easy" - The Eagles
5. "Jackson" - Johnny Cash

I'm not as old as this list makes me look. I think I have to say that on every afternoon comment diversion.

Posted by: Lainie at February 6, 2008 3:53 PM

FEMMES!!! How could I forget the FEMMES????

Posted by: dammitjanet at February 6, 2008 3:53 PM

Damn, I forgot one:

Ben Folds - Bitches Ain't Shit (Dr Dre cover)

God, that song is all kinds of fun.

"Man...fuck that bitch." Gets me every single time...

Posted by: citizen_cris at February 6, 2008 3:54 PM

1. "Hunter", Bjork. It's all about the drumbeat and the way the emotion of the song simmers, barely contained. Also, I just love flooring it when all that pent-up rage bursts forth in the bridge (specifically the line "How Scandinavian of me").

2. "Tank!", Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts, aka the theme song from the anime "Cowboy Bebop"

3. "The Changing Scene", Freddie Hubbard. This works well not only late at night on a deserted highway, but also driving past sidewalk cafes with all the windows down.

4. "One Two Cha Cha Cha", Usha Uthup (and chorus). Crazy Bollywood disco pop at its finest!

5. "Sweet Child o'Mine", GnR, just befuckingcause.

Posted by: jeem at February 6, 2008 3:55 PM

And now my coworkers are looking at me strange, since I've tuned up most of these on my ipod...and rocking out silently while sitting at your cubicle seems to be something not oft-seen in these parts...thanks, guys...thanks a lot...

boo, Garbage is my #3 greatest band of all time. I am not ashamed to say I have every last one of their albums. Now if only I could see them in concert, I could die happy.

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at February 6, 2008 3:55 PM

Posted by: theresa at February 6, 2008 3:55 PM

I had a Montell Jordan sesh (This is How We Do it, anyone?) Monday afternoon. Tripping it back from New Orleans to St. Louis is usually not so bad, but I needed a pick me up about halfway through Mississippi. Bonus points for dancing.

Posted by: PK at February 6, 2008 3:57 PM

I get really random on roadtrips, but I do have a few that usually end up playing at some point.
1. Hooverphonic - "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular". The whole damn album is the best driving music.
2. Don McLean - "American Pie"
3. Smashing Pumpkins - "Bullet with Butterfly Wings"
4. Muse - "Starlight"
5. Prince - "When Doves Cry"

Posted by: CJK at February 6, 2008 3:58 PM

Theresa, you goddess you. I play "Stars" on the jukebox and get a slew of people asking who it is. Great pick.

And I just remembered one I would pick instead of War Pigs. "Queen of the Reich", Queensryche. It's the musical analogy to the last meal, since you can't help flooring the pedal, having a metal-induced seizure, and dying in a ball of fire as you hit that high note on the chorus. Ka-boom.

Posted by: denadn03 at February 6, 2008 4:00 PM

1. "Listen to the Music" - Doobie Brothers
2. "Ramble On" - Led Zeppelin
3. "Fat Bottomed Girls" - Queen
4. "Baba O'Riley" - The Who
5. "The Joker" - Steve Miller Band

Posted by: TL at February 6, 2008 4:01 PM

Gasp!! I can't believe NO ONE has listed In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins. Whomever doesn't do airdrums leading into the chorus from the 3rd verse is a lying bag of monkey spunk.

Posted by: PissBoy at February 6, 2008 4:02 PM

citizen cris - you are so right. That is absolutely the best driving song. Though I scandalize my passengers with it sometimes.

Two years ago I drove from Toronto to Los Angeles in a '92 Plymouth Sundance with my best friend and our boyfriends. Thats 8000km - or 5000 miles for you yanks:) - of music to fill. These were our favorites, in no particular order:
1) One Way Out - Allman Brothers Band (for that bus scene in Almost Famous)
2) Crossroads - Eric Clapton
3) 100th Meridian - The Tragically Hip (a MUST when driving through the prairies)
4) Ramble On - Zeppelin ("now its time for me to gooooo, the autumn moon lights my wayyyy")
5) Alive - Pearl Jam
And a bonus track - Take it Easy, The Eagles - reminds me of road trips with my Dad when I was little.

Posted by: Kelsophocles at February 6, 2008 4:17 PM

1. "Who wouldn't want to be me?" - Keith Urban ...the perfect song to sing along with with the windows down.

2. "Faith" by George Michael

3. "Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off" - Panic at the Disco

4. "Callin' Baton Rouge" - Garth Brooks...its my Nashville roots.

5. "Take me home tonight" - Eddie Money... reminds me of going to the bar in college

Honorable Mention to: "Escape" by Enrique Iglesias and "Don't Stop Believin'"

If I must venture beyond that:

1. The Who, "Magic Bus"
2. The Clash, "Train in Vain"
3. Violent Femmes, "Kiss Off"
4. Jane's Addiction, "Jane Says"
5. Pixies, "Debaser"

And, oh yeah, a bunch of other songs that I'll be kicking myself for forgetting later.

1. Copperhead Road - Steve Earle

3. Free Bird - Lynard Skynard

5. Bohemian Like Me - Dandy Warhols

Posted by: Steph at February 6, 2008 4:27 PM

Erin, many blessings go to you for mentioning Minus the Bear and their best sing-along song.

Myself, I have a 35-minute commute everyday due to the lack of a certain bridge in Minneapolis, so I have fun rocking out for 70 minutes a day. I kinda love it even though I'm killing the atmosphere. But I can't narrow it down to all-time, so here's the current hits I put on repeat:

1) "Oh Be One" Oh No! Oh My!
2) "The Con" Tegan and Sara
3) "Modern Lover" Coco B's
4) "All My Friends" LCD Soundsystem
5) "That's How You Know" Amy Adams

That's right, from Enchanted. Deal with it. That one's especially good to sing in the car with your girlfriend to piss off your single friends.

1- Whiskey Heaven, by Fats Domino

2- Story of My Life- Social Distortion

3- Death or Glory- The Clash

4- Sub-mission- The Sex Pistols

5- FlagPole Sitta- Harvey Danger -- Dustin was right about that one, plus the lyrics are fun
".. now I'm an amputee goddamn you". That's funny.

Posted by: Blackwater Hattie at February 6, 2008 4:37 PM

Julie,
it was only about 3 months ago that I finally learned that the lyrics were, "just like the white-winged dove." Not "the ONE winged dove" as I had been singing for 27 years prior.

How about a misheard lyric diversion Dustin?

Posted by: Theresa at February 6, 2008 4:40 PM

I actually have SIX driving mix CDs that were designed just for this purpose. Three of them are general and three were actually chosen specifically with regard to time of day - dawn/dusk/dark. That's 82 songs in total. Here's my best shot at five...

1) "Radar Love" - Golden Earring
Yes, it's cliche, but it's cliche for a good reason. That drum fill on the bridge is the coolest highway accompaniment ever created.

2) "Stickshifts and Safetybelts" - Cake
Holy crap, is this a fun song to sing at the top of your lungs. It's not recommended in this seat-belt age, but bonus points if you're driving a car without bucket seats and have your honey slide over next to you.

3) "Movin' Right Along" - The Muppet Movie
This is the quintessential road trip song. There can be no debate on this matter. Best enjoyed with a friend.

4) "L.A. Woman" - The Doors
An epic sprawling journey in itself that goes with spinning wheels like chocolate and peanut butter.

5) "Full Throttle" - The Prodigy
This is a song that can make me dangerous behind the wheel.

Ugh, I have so many other great ones. Five is way too few.

Posted by: Darth Corleone at February 6, 2008 4:43 PM

Tom Sawyer-Rush
Eggman-Beastie Boys
Cazzo Di Ferro-The Lemonheads
Flood-Sebadoh
Honk if you're lonely-Silver Jews
Blue Orchid-White Stripes

Posted by: LZ at February 6, 2008 4:45 PM

1. Eastbound and Down - Jerry Reed (This one is a necessity for any driving mix)
2. Radar Love - Golden Earring (God help you if you accidentally get the horrible White Lion version.)
3. Nightrain - Guns N Roses (Really any non-single from Appetite for Destruction would do)
4. Counting Bodies Like Sheep - A Perfect Circle (Despite the repeating refrain of "Go back to sleep!" this one will keep you awake.)
5. At the End of the Tour - They Might Be Giants (Their album Flood is usually a road trip staple, too.)

Posted by: TK at February 6, 2008 4:51 PM

Theresa,
I am so glad I'm not the only one who thought that Stevie Nicks was saying "ONE winged dove". For years and years, I sang it that way and was quite happy to do so. When I learned the real lyric I was kind of crushed and now I choose to sing it the way I thought I originally heard it (at the top of my lungs no less). Besides, "ONE winged dove", actually makes more sense for me, so to hell with the correct lyric.
And I second a diversion on misheard lyrics. How 'bout it, D?

3. "Highway to Hell" - AC/DC
4. "I Love Rock 'n Roll" - Joan Jett
5. "Dust in the Wind" - Kansas

And a bonus track:

6. "On the Turning Away" - Pink Floyd (can't help it; I love to sing along with it)

Posted by: The Wanderer at February 6, 2008 5:05 PM

Can we please just get a fucking Pajiba box-set going? Huh? Wouldn't that be super rad? That way I could just send a goddam check and be done with it... Instead, here I sit with deadlines looming and instead of paying attention to what I'm getting paid for, I'm writing a giant list of songs I've gotta purchase when I'm half-sauced and spending willy-nilly about two hours from now...

Someone take care of this toot-sweet!

Sidenote on the "L.A. Woman" - kick ass song, but drive-wise, check out the version by Paul Oakenfold. You can find it on the "Californication" soundtrack (nothing to do with the RHCP). I'm guessing it'd be a great windows down song, but I've gotta wait till Spring decides to get off it's ass and make an arrival...

Oh, and kudos on "Bloodletting" by Concrete Blonde. I likee!

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at February 6, 2008 5:14 PM

I'm cheating and putting extras because I don't know which ones to cut:

Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson. It reminds me of 7th grade basketball summer camp (because our coach played it EVERY DAY during drills). I can't help it. Blame her.

Cecilia - Simon and Garfunkle

Feel Me Flow - Naughty By Nature

Nowhere Fast - Incubus

Salsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel

Stranded - Plumb

Intro - DMX

Posted by: tt_marie at February 6, 2008 5:16 PM

Cecilia is such a fun song, that and Baby Driver.

Posted by: pinkcheese at February 6, 2008 5:23 PM

Fun diversion. Props to the poster who suggested Clap For The Wolfman--classic!

1. Packt Like Sardines in a Crushed Tin Box - Radiohead (nothing to do with the fact that I drive a wee subcompact; just like to get caught up in the loud repetitiveness)
2. Roll On Down The Highway - BTO
3. Dead End - Sam Roberts
4. The Murder Mystery - Velvet Underground

and for quiet nighttime drives in the country,

5. You Are The Everything - REM

[er, apologies if I didn't catch my typos in time and double-posted, as I suspect I did...]

Posted by: MO at February 6, 2008 5:24 PM

Man...just five!

1.) Photograph-Def Leppard
2.) Never Let Me Down/Behind the Wheel-Depeche Mode
3.) Sweet Child O'Mine-GNR
4.) Summertime Rolls-Jane's Addiction
5.) Creep-Radiohead-my sister and I used to sing this incessantly when my car didn't have a stereo

Hee hee..I snuck in an extra one!

Posted by: JoAnn at February 6, 2008 5:26 PM

Oh, shit!

I forgot Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels

I fucking love the intro to that song.

Posted by: tt_marie at February 6, 2008 5:26 PM

Lately? My choices change a lot so here goes:
1) Brass Monkey - Beastie Boys. The entire car will inevitably begin to shake from the amount of ass-wiggling and car dancing
2) random songs by Mickey Avalon
3) I talk too much - Just Jack (personal addiction of mine, I can't stop listening to the damn song)
4) Let's Go Crazy - Prince
5) The Goonies R Good Enough - Cyndi Lauper. Pure nostalgia and it's always fun to do that high-pitched "huh!" throughout the song.

In addition to this, my friends and I have favorite songs for hurricane evacuation. Mine is Karma Tsunami by Fishbone. Heather's is Cities in Dust by Siouxsie and the Banshees. It's important to evacuate with a theme.

Posted by: Sharon at February 6, 2008 5:31 PM

Five? Seriously? I have separate playlists for which direction I'm driving. The following selections are from the list I use when I'm making the eight-hour trip home after a visit to the parental units...

1. Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf. I memorized the lyrics to this just so I could scream it as I'm escaping from family gatherings.

2. Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen. Cannot listen to this in town though, because I can't do under 75 with it on the radio

3. Smooth by Santana. Perfect for when I need to get the muscles a bit loose five hours into the trip. I've actually timed the playlist so this comes on at a rest stop and I can crank it in the parking lot. I rarely end up dancing alone.

4. Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel. Usually hits about the time I near the "Dear God, just how long is Illinois, anyway?" mark.

5. Harmony Constant by Michael Nesmith. Actually, this song is on almost all my playlists, so it really isn't a road song. I just like singing it.

Posted by: funtime42 at February 6, 2008 5:32 PM

A little different list: My sister and I would be driving somewhere and if we couldn't find anything on the radio, she'd turn off the radio with a flourish and announce, "Let's sing!" Keep in mind that we're both completely tone deaf, but we sang these loudly anyway.

1. Theme from the Brady Bunch.
2. Theme from the Partridge Family.
3. Theme from Gilligans Island.

Lather rinse repeat until we sang them on key.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 6, 2008 5:32 PM

tt_marie...good call, that's a fantastic song.

Now I want to add Simple Minds-Don't You Forget About Me. Judd Nelson in all his glory!

Posted by: Julie at February 6, 2008 5:33 PM

Sadly, I don't drive and have no licence to do so with, but when I'm sitting shotgun I definitely have my own playlist.

1. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
An obvious one, but I couldn't leave it off the list.

2. Black Mages - One Winged Angel
My sister and I are huge nerds for this. We know the lyrics. I'll say nothing more.

3. Alice Cooper - Poison
This one gives me the need to make flamboyant gestures at every other word. Which I can do, with no wheel to hold onto.

4. Corey Hart - Sunglasses at night
Best done while actually wearing sunglasses, at night.

5. A tie between Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' and MIA's 'Paper Planes'. The former is awesome fun, but kind of restrictive - if you're listening to Michael Jackson it's best done on a foggy night in an abandoned warehouse. MIA is better for just driving along and relaxing (this song is, anyway).

TK: Yes, I know it's harsh.

'Bamapink: It probably is smug; I won't argue.

I wouldn't have posted anything at all, would have just stayed out of this and let y'all have your fun; but I just couldn't stand teh flaccid sad bad taste any more--I was provoked.

I've read the subsequent submissions, too.

And Jesus Christ you people etc.

Damn, all of my good ones are already on here it seems. But since I'm in favor of having this playlist *permanently* on my iPod (lots of driving), can someone please compile a list of the top 20 or something...? Or make an iTunes playlist out of the most mentioned? That person would be FANTASTIC.

Posted by: Jess at February 6, 2008 5:35 PM

Oh, and Cake. Cannot drive long distances without a large helping of Cake.

Out of weirdness, I can't play "End of the Movie", because that's the song I want played at my funeral.

Can't do RATM's "Kick Out The Jams" either, because that's the song I was listening to when I got into a wicked, wicked bad biking accident involving me, high-speed, a four door sedan and a Stop sign obscured by a tree branch. To this day, I can't listen to that song while biking or in a vehicle. Again, weird...

1. Electricity, [London] Suede
2. Run to the Hills, Iron Maiden (the perfect storm: drums, air guitar, extreme vocals)
3. You Got Another Think Coming/Living After Midnight, Judas Priest
4. Talk of the Town, Garbage
5. Bargain, The Who

And many others that have already been mentioned.

Ok, I read like the first 20 comments and then skipped ahead to post mine because I was already seeing some of my favorites on other people's posts, and I didn't want anyone esle's songs to influence my answers. In reading the posts, I felt like I was losing my individuality. Dawg, you listed my number one. Pookie, you beat me to my numbers 4 and 5, and Julie, you listed my honorable mention(Jesus of Suburbia) and my favorite song to have sex to(Kashmir), which I think would make an excellent diversion for the site one day: Sex songs. :-) So anywhere, here goes:

1. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Lef Leppard. This song has emotional significance as I recieved my first lap dance ever to it. Good times...So anyway, Any and all car trips alone must begin AND end with this song while I sing at the top of my lungs and do some semi-erotic, stripper inspired dance moves during the "I'm hot, sticky sweet, from my head to my feet. Yeah!" Part.

2. Bad Habit - The Offspring. What better song to listen to while cruising down 95 (especially through Maryland traffic, ugh! Do you people know what a fucking passing lane is?!?!?!?) than a song about road rage, which is heavy on the guitars and full of foul language? The whole song is about grabbing the gun out of your glove compartment and blowing the head off the asshole who just cut you off. It's like they're in my head.

3. One - Metallica. Just love the song. It rocks. Must be played as loud as stereo goes, side-view mirror rattling high!

4. M.E.T.H.O.D. MAN - Method Man. I have a soft spot for my dear Meth (the man, not the drug) and the rest of Wu Tang Clan. During the last year of my innocence, a new to the scene Wu Tang Clan did a tour of small clubs and actually did a gig at this little hole in wall in Lansdale, PA (ON TEEN NITE!!) about 20 mins from my house. This place was so small that you could litterally reach out and touch the Clan, which my bitch older sister spent plenty of time doing after the show, if you know what I mean. (she had a particularly close experience with Meth himself) But it was one of the best nights of my shitty little suburban teen life and I've felt a bond with Wu Tang, though not nearly as strong as my sister's(did I mention she's a total bitch?), that always makes me feel 16 again.

5. Bring the Pain - Method Man. Please see #4. In addition to that, how can you not love a song and a man so insightful that he utters the words "I've learned when you drink Absolute straight it burns, so much it gives my chest hairs a perm." Especially to a now less innicent teen who had discovered the joys of Absolute Jell-O shots, beer bongs, and keg stands. God, that motherfucker is poetic, and my sister said he was a good lay too. (that bitch!)

1. Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen-- The shouting, the dancing!

2. Gimme the Loot by Biggie Smalls (see how cool I am, using his non-corporate name?)-- The first rap song I ever memorized, all violent and with the two different characters.

3. Ain't No Fun by Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and Nate Dogg (Kurupt is dead to me)-- Hilariously over-the-top in its misogyny.

4. Just about any hit by Hootie and the Blowfish-- I've been to just two concerts, and this is one... 2 or 3 years ago, at that.

5. You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon-- It gets me a-singin' like few others.

Roadrunner- The Modern Lovers

"1,2,3,4! Roadrunner, roadrunner, going faster miles an hour..."

Posted by: freja at February 6, 2008 5:52 PM

1.Wake me up Inside by Evanescence. This song got me a speeding ticket once, and I think the cop followed me for about two miles before I pulled over cuz I didn't hear the siren.
2. Just about anything by Counting Crows and/or Garrison Keillor's crew. Long drives have always seemed kind of melancholy, for some reason; in any case, you're not going to sustain head-bangin' energy for more than a few hours, anyway.
3. But if you want to try, you can't do much better than "Toxicity" by System of a Down. I once heard that song on a loop about 15 times in a row, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.
And I'm spent.

Posted by: Pen Dragon at February 6, 2008 5:52 PM

1. Rancid, "Indestructible" - look out!
2. Bloc Party, "I Still Remember" - this song just makes me happy all the time, even in the worst driving conditions.
3. Bouncing Souls, "Gone" - for the sentimental road trip.
4. Bad Religion, "Los Angeles is Burning" - great for days when you can look out your car window and Los Angeles is in fact on fire.
5. Eve 6, "Leech" - I know "Open Road Song" is the more obvious choice, but I dig this one more for the steering wheel poundage factor.

Kudos to all who said anything by Queen and Ben Folds Five, and to Jenny with "Shoulder to the Wheel" by Saves the Day. That takes me back!

Posted by: Sh*t Sandwich at February 6, 2008 5:58 PM

Impossible to pick five songs and not immediately think of tons more that deserve mention.

Foreigner - Jukebox Hero (he heard one guitar, just blew him away)
Old '97s - W. Tx Teardrops
Metallica - Master of Puppets (too obvious? fine, then Disposable Heroes)
Mest - Cadillac
Ozzy - Crazy Train

And I think Queen gets a lifetime achievement award for this diversion. Is there any Queen song that doesn't improve your trip?

Posted by: James at February 6, 2008 5:59 PM

Oh, another 2 honorable mentions:
Giong Back to Cali and 10 Crack Commandments - Notorious B.I.G.

1. AC/DC - Highway to Hell
2. Tom Cochrane - Life is a Highway

1. Weenie Beenie - Foo Fighters
2. Rearviewmirror - Pearl Jam
3. Parabol/Parabola - Tool
4. All Along the Watchtower - Dave Matthews Band
5. Green Mind - Dink

Late to the Diversion--as usual.

1) M-M-M-My Sharona
2) Police--Message in a Box
Rocked the entire boxed set from IL (first song in my parents driveway) to TN (last song in my driveway) for 7.5 hrs!
3) D.R. Not just "Once In A Lifetime", but the entire "Stop Making Sense" album.
I got some groceries, some peanut butter, to last a couple of days....

Posted by: wsapnin at February 6, 2008 6:35 PM

Erin--I have to take issue with "Take On Me." It literally makes my ears bleed and my pussy snap shut at the sound of the first synthesizer note. ARG. My fat little roommate in college lost her virginity to that song. She was 5' if she was lucky, he was about 6'7" and they did it in his VW Rabbit. She played the song every minute of every day and all I could think of was their awkward humping in that Rabbit.

So now, my friend, you can have that vision every time you hear it too!

You're welcome.

Let's start things off with a little background info to music and driving. The Brisitsh RAC motoring foundation did a study a few years back, and they determined that the single most dangerous song to drive to is Wagner's Ride of the Valkyeries. Seriously, put that shit on sometime and try to go the speed limit. Not. Possible.

So, without further ado:

1. Ride of the Valkyeries - Wagner

The rest is in no particular order:

Earth Jam - Bella Fleck and the Fleck Tones

Teen Town (live version) - Weather Report featuring Jaco Pastorius.

L.A. Woman - The Doors.

Tank! - The Seatbelts

Life During Wartime - Talking Heads

Listening to music while driving is something of an art to me...There is a perfect song for every day and every mood and every car.

Honestly, this should be broken up into two categories: music for long drives, and music for short trips. I love playing a little Django Reinhardt whilst jetting around town, ala Steve martin in L.A. Story.

Posted by: Some Guy at February 6, 2008 6:51 PM

Oh, and Dustin, "Don't Stop Believin" is definitely the best anthem of all time. Without a doubt, you just already had it.

Posted by: FourKings at February 6, 2008 6:51 PM

Jerce,

Despite the fact that you got your bands mixed up (it's by Molly Hatchet, not Blackfoot), I gave it a go. And while I enjoyed the track... I dunno. Maybe the sound's been imitated too much, but it's indistinguishable from a hundred other Southern bar-style bands. Not bad, but nothing life-changing either.

Ah well. Opinions and assholes and whatnot.

Posted by: TK at February 6, 2008 6:53 PM

Take it Easy ----While I was driving through Winslow, Arizona.....One year ago today.

Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi. I can feel the tires on the road right now.

Eagles, Billy Joel, Gypsy Kings and when you are tired of words, Ottmar Liebert.

And to whomever above because I can't find the damn comment again. Illinois is a loooonnng, fucking flat state. But not nearly as mind numbingly flat and boring as our neighbor, Indiana.

Posted by: Lori at February 6, 2008 7:05 PM

But I gotta say that my all time favorite driving/music moment was cruising down Lake Shore Drive when "Lake Shore Drive" came on the radio. Heaven!

Posted by: wsapnin at February 6, 2008 7:07 PM

Lori--we should hang.

I love the Gipsy Kings and Ottmar Liebert.

Posted by: wsapnin at February 6, 2008 7:11 PM

Jerce- This just means the next time you want to hang out, you've got to do the Truffle Shuffle before we'll let you in the front gate.

Lori-Indeed, the state of Indiana is god-awful flat, boring, and prone to random apocalyptic thunderstorms along its highway system.

But I'd take flatness and snooze-inducing over the teeth-rattling third world road conditions in the fair state of Pennsylvania.

...And yet I take offense. Of course I only travel toward Ithaca when I'm on a wine tour bus so maybe it's a lot nicer when you're sober. I'll never know.

Hater.

Shining Star - Earth Wind and Fire

Black Dog - Led Zeppelin

Barracuda - Heart

Isley Brothers - Fight the Power

George Thorogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

Lauren Hill - That Thing

Prince - Seven
AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Iron Maiden - Aces
Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla
Rush - Tom Sawyer

Yes, Rush fan and yes I admit I'm lame and a child of the 80's, deal with it.

"And to whomever above because I can't find the damn comment again. Illinois is a loooonnng, fucking flat state. But not nearly as mind numbingly flat and boring as our neighbor, Indiana."

Lori, I live in MO. and went to school in IN., and had to drive straight across IL on interstate 70 over seventy five times for four years to get there, and let me tell you, southern Illinois is FAR worse to drive across than Indiana.

Going home, I'd drive through Terra Haute and have to prepare myself for the long suck.

On that stretch of 70 through IL? You might as well be driving across Kansas.

Posted by: Some Guy at February 6, 2008 7:41 PM

A lot of mine have been taken, which I suppose helps me narrow my list...

Hop a Plane - Tegan and Sara
Izzo (H.O.V.A) - Jay-Z
Get Me Bodied (remix) - Beyoncé
Come Together - The Beatles
Toxicity - System of a Down

Yeah, weird, I know.

Posted by: kumquats at February 6, 2008 7:55 PM

The worst part of the drive through Illinois is knowing that after crossing the width of Indiana and most of Illinois, I have to turn right at Bloomington and then go the length of Illinois to Wisconsin. The route has the advantage of avoiding Chicago, but Dear gods it's dull. Chartered accountant dull. The music is the only thing that gets me through it...

1. "Fly Me Courageous" Drivin' n' Cryin'
2. "Cheap Motel" Southern Culture on the Skids
3. "Werewolves of London" Warren Zevon

5. "Been Caught Stealin'" Jane's Addiction

So, when do we get an iPod mix list built from today's comment diversion?

1. Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
2. Bob Dylan - Stuck Inside of Mobile

5. David Gray - Babylon

This'll date me some, but ...

"Radar Love," Golden Earring, perhaps the best driving song ever ("I been drivin' all night my hand's wet on the wheel, there's a voice in my head that drives my heel ...")

"Suffragette City," Bowie

"Fool for the City," Foghat

"Breakin' the Law," Judas Priest (for Beavis & Butt-Head)

"Highway to Hell," AC/DC

Posted by: bucdaddy at February 6, 2008 8:32 PM

Well, for the record, I just have to mention "Last Train to Satansville" by Swervedriver..though there's a slight danger when I have to close my eyes and tilt my head like a dog when that high dissonant peak is hit after the chorus solos.

Oh and "This Offer Is Unrepeatable" by Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet is *also* a great song to sing like a spastic bug-eyed freak. I just fucking hate that I can't do any proper kick drum syncopation on anything because it's the accelerator. So frustrating!!

Posted by: Jay at February 6, 2008 8:33 PM

This is perfect timing, because my highway anthems are the only thing that got me through driving in a hideous snowstorm tonight.
1) "Tiny Dancer"- Elton John
2) "Bohemian Like You"- The Dandy Warhols
3) "Condemnation"- Depeche Mode (maybe a strange choice, but I feel calmer singing along to that song)
4) "Psycho Killer"- Talking Heads (I love singing in French, okay)
5) "Digital Love"- Daft Punk (a necessity when I feel a bout of road rage coming on)

Posted by: Lannie at February 6, 2008 8:42 PM

Lately I have been blasting a lot of early Van Halen...

SO my current top 5:
1. Girl Gone Bad
2. Drop Dead Legs
3. Ice Cream Man
4. Top Jimmy
5. I'm the One

Also have to agree on the CAKE love. At the top of my lungs. Esp. their first album, oddly enough.

And, I agree, we need a definite Road Trip Lifetime Achievement Award for Queen on here.

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at February 6, 2008 8:43 PM

Aw, shit, you're right! Made a fool of myself.

I was probably thinking Blackfoot because of "Train, Train," another kickass driving song.

And that song reminds me of "La Grange" by ZZ Top, which is a killer driving song, which no one appears to have mentioned above.

...Get off my damn lawn!

Posted by: Jerce at February 6, 2008 8:44 PM

1. "Totally Fucked" from Spring Awakening. Lyrics include "Yeah, you're fucked all right and all for spite, you can kiss your sorry ass goodbye. Totally fucked, will they mess you up? Well you know they're gonna try." Seriously.
2. "Every Time We Touch" by Cascada. It's happy bubbly crazy techno.
3. "Baba O'Riley" by The Who.
4. "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi. I'm a Jersey girl at heart, what can I say?
5. "Sweet Caroline," but the recent remix that was all over the end of my senior year.

Honorable mentions go to "Don't Stop Believing" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," for being awesome but just too normal for me to include in the list, where I'm trying to be more unique than the rest of you. Don't lie, you're doing it, too.

Posted by: That Girl at February 6, 2008 8:52 PM

not all on the same playlist, but just to show I could do better than Jerce, here's a random selection:

Fantaisie Impromptu no. 33 Chopin
Gimme A Little Sign- Brenton Wood
Try Me- James Brown
A Quick One While He's Away- the Who
the Piano has been drinking- Tom Waits
Slump- Outkast
Boss DJ- Bradley Nowell of Sublime
Buy Her Candy- Sleater-Kinney
Porcelain- Moby
Take Ecstasy With Me- !!!
the Bridge- the Knife
For Real- Okkervil River

also wholly approve of much of the other music-Johnny Cash on a rain soaked highway, screaming out "Andalusia" during Debaser, getting fucking pumped b/c Fortunate Son, Led Zep, Violent Femmes obscure stuff. there are some greaties up in there with all the baddies, Jerce. You're mostly right about ZZ, I give you that.

then my heart stopped:
listening to Cio Cio-San
Fall in love all over again.

1. Inside and Out by Feist
2. Tangerine by Led Zeppelin
3. Life on Mars by David Bowie
4. Time Will do the Talking by Patty Griffin
5. Antichrist Television Blues by Arcade Fire

And as for discussion above about Illinois vs. Indiana for boredom. . . When I was 21 I drove alone across Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas. Without question, Illinois was the one that made me want to take my own life.

Michael Jackson - Thriller

David Bowie - Suffragette City
Maria Callas - L'amour est un Oiseau rebelle (I know, I keep slipping her in here, but seriously. Some opera is very very cool to drive too. Except I tend to speed a little too much while listening to it.)

1. Woman - by Wolfmother. Best.Air.Guitar.Ever.
2. My Happiness - Powderfinger - highly singable even for the intonationally challenged
3. Electricity - Something For Kate
4. Pure Morning - Placebo - great riff for the air guitar novice
5. Come What May - Moulin Rouge Soundtrack.

OK, the last may be incongruous, but we have never done a road trip without singing this one in harmony, with Big Hand people, Big Hands.

Knights of Cydonia by Muse
Tell Me Where it Hurts by Garbage
Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World
Cute Without the "E" by Taking Back Sunday

Honorable mention to Hail Hail or Alive by Pearl Jam for sentimental reasons, and Heaven by Warrant because I'm a sucker for Monster Ballads.

I'm sure I can't name any rock ballad or whatever that hasn't been mentioned ten times already, so I'll give you a song up with which I know NO ONE else will come: Descent Into Mystery, from the original score of Batman (w/ Michael Keaton), composed by Danny Elfman. It's the one that's played when Bats is driving back to the Batcave after rescuing Vicki Vale. I've got the CD, and trust me, if you hear that song while driving on an empty road at night, by the time it's over, you will be going at a truly dangerous speed. Best driving song ever (well, except for maybe Radar Love).

Jailbreak -- no it's not Molly Hatchet, cretin: it's the immortal Thin Lizzy featuring Phil Lynott. And no, you may not substitute The Boys are Back in Town.

What I Like About You -- the Romantics. BBBBBBBBBBBB-Hey! And don't swallow your harmonica.

Love Removal Machine -- the Cult. You don't know the lyrics, but the ones you sing make about as much sense as the ones Ian Astbury is singing. Soul Shaykah!

Sweet Emotion -- Aerosmith. You might talk me into "Walk this Way", but I doubt it. 'cuz the backstage boogie set yo pants on fy-yah. yes it did.

and because you're going to be in the car that long, from 1976, grab your Pajiba and rockit:

Detroit Rock City -- KISS.

Get up !
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down !
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

And sing it like a man -- not like some puberty-struck dweeb in his rusted out, primer-colored firebird. SING IT LIKE A MAN!

The rest of your lists bore me. Only 9 people list a Zeppelin song, and "Hey Hey What Can I do" is not one of them? Bob Seger is not found? Only 2 Steve Miller mentions? "Take it Easy" by the Eagles gets listed but somehow "Life in the Fast Lane" is not? And "she's so cold" is the Stones song you can come up with -- not "It's Only Rock 'n Roll"?

Who are you people? I'm the one who lives is the middle of the Bible Belt -- have you never actually Rawked out with your ... oh never mind.

4. Garbage - "Special" A personal favorite.

2. In your eyes - live 13 minute version
3. Too drunk to fuck - Dead Kennedys
4. Living Dead Girl - Rob Zombie
5. It takes 2 - Rob Base and Dj EZ Rock - cheezy but great for car dancing!

Cowboys from Hell - Pantera
Unchained - Van Halen
Detroit Rock City - KISS
Superbeast - Rob Zombie
Mr Amsterdam - Sum 41

In no particular order...

Black Suits on Table Three by The Angel City Outcasts
- ACO is a very fast, very catchy Rock 'n' Roll band. This song is their fastest and catchiest.

Razors in the Night by The Ducky Boys
- Killer Blitz cover, and perfect for speeding out of a parking lot full of people.

Working for the Weekend by Loverboy
- Windows down, flying down the highway, of course you are gonna need a headband...

Ban the Tube Top by Reel Big Fish
- Have to scream this one at the top of my lungs whenever I can. Where better then while speeding.

Back to the Future Theme by Alan Silvestri
- If my calculations are correct, when this thing hits 88 miles per hour... You're gonna see some serious shit.

Posted by: Ken Hart at February 7, 2008 12:12 AM

There's one song that pops into my head immediately so I'm just going to post this one.

"Here's Your Future" by the Thermals.
I know, it's the indie rock choice rather than the classic rock choice, but fuck, every time that song comes on, I turn it up as loud as it can go and I sing along as loud as possible to every single word and I feel invincible.

Oh wait, while I was here I thought of two more. And a typical classic rock choice is included!
"Baba O'Riley" by the Who.
"Conquest" by the White Stripes.

Posted by: Ana at February 7, 2008 12:47 AM

Extra difficulty....all foreign languageInterstate Anthems.

1. Le Meilleur des Mondes - Tété
If you aren't familiar, you are doing yourself a disservice! This guy is a bloody genius.

2. Nur Ein Wort - Wir Sind Helden
By far the most fun German pop band around. This song also has a great homage to Bob Dylan type video.

3. Chalifot - HaDag Nachash
Rad..political..with an awesome beat that you have to jump around to.

4. Dancehall Caballeros - Seeed
Wir sind Seeed und das ist unser gebiet...

5. 10 Zu 1 - Sportfreunde Stiller
Just about every song they've ever recorded is an Interstate Anthem. This song is so infectious non-german speakers are drawn to it.

Posted by: Logan at February 7, 2008 1:17 AM

For this, I'm gonna go with the tunes that ensure that I won't be driving at safe speeds.

Date with the Night - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Interpol - Slow Hands (Not Even Jail is up there, too)

Great Love Sound - The Raveonettes

Trill - Clipse

Killing in the name of - Rage Against the Machine

Mighty O - OutKast

Float On - Modest Mouse

QOTSA and the Foo Fighters are missing because they deserve a list all their own.

Posted by: Jas at February 7, 2008 1:33 AM

Holy Shit, the Sponge joint "Plowed" was an inspired choice...

Flogging Molly - Tobacco Island. Perfect song to shout to.

Charlie Daniels Band - Devil Went Down to Georgia.
The guitars aren't awesome, but the fiddle is.

WuTang - Protect Ya Neck. "I smoke on the mic like Smokin' Joe Frazier..."

Dropkick Murphys - Boys on the Docks.
"Say, Hey, Johnny Boy, the Battle Call. United We Stand, Divided We Fall..."

Rancid - Brad Logan. Best Rancid song ever... and they have a shitload of good stuff.

Also, "Unsung" by Helmut and "Would" by Alice in Chains... and, of course, "Interstate Love Song" by STP.

Todd>> "Descent Into Mystery" is one of those 82 songs I mentioned!!! So, no, you're not the only one. So, right, I didn't include it in my five, but I did consider it. I ultimately decided to skew a little more accessible. (I have a lot of songs on my driving list that are fringe at best.) So "no one" is accurate but the all caps "NO ONE" is probably an exaggeration. :- )

Posted by: Darth Corleone at February 7, 2008 1:44 AM

Condescend to us and then "Flirtin' With Disaster" is the best you can do? It's a decent song and all, but it's a little overplayed.

Posted by: Darth Corleone at February 7, 2008 1:51 AM

Socio Cab, Crap. Forgot all about the DKMs.

All of "Do or Die."

Posted by: bucdaddy at February 7, 2008 2:01 AM

Nice call on Helmet there Sociopathic Cabbage. I would dare say that every song on Meantime makes me an angry, ranting, fast driver.

Posted by: Dexter Morgan at February 7, 2008 2:08 AM

do these songs remind anyone else of a frat party?

i'm all for iron maiden anything and ac/dc highway to hell album.

and maybe a little john mayer "why georgia" and jamie cullum for those late night moments when everyone else is asleep and you have some time for the obligatory introverted retrospection brought on by long stretches of highway.

Posted by: bree at February 7, 2008 3:12 AM

"Alive" by Pearl Jam

"Foreplay/Long Time" by Boston

"Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin

"Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent

"Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who

Posted by: Mick J at February 7, 2008 3:18 AM

Not that anyone is listening this far down, but Crowded House - Don't Dream it's Over is the perfect leaving song in conjunction with Better Be Home Soon for the return journey. *sniff*

Posted by: vab at February 7, 2008 3:25 AM

bucdaddy: at least there is one other man posting in this thread, although I admit that Mick J's list has merit.

Posted by: hater from Siloam Springs at February 7, 2008 7:48 AM

Ellen- I was so excited when I saw that you had Patty Griffin on your list. I love her!

Also, I remembered another song that has to be on my list:
LCD Soundsystem "Daft Punk is Playing at My House"

Posted by: Erin at February 7, 2008 9:04 AM

I'm listening, vab. Crowded House and many other songs on this list were on my mid 90's 8 hr road trip mixed tapes called "Winnie[peg] to Minnie[apolis], volumes 1-4.

Although I don't own a car these days, I found myself doing the elliptical-trainer-at-the-gym-equivalent of car dancing (trust me, it's not as easy as it sounds) to the following:

1. Where's Your Head At? - Basement Jaxx
2. Firestarter - The Prodigy
3. El Matador - Fabuloso Cadillacs
4. Hate to Say I Told You So - The Hives
5. Been Caught Stealin' - Jane's Addiction

Posted by: nipsy at February 7, 2008 9:07 AM

Darth Corleone -- just glad someone else understands. When I play that song, even my Corolla becomes the Batmobile.

Posted by: Todd at February 7, 2008 9:55 AM

1. Bush - "Machinehead" (for fast driving)
2. Stone Temple Pilots - "Interstate Love Song" (obviously)
3. Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Walk on the Ocean" (for introspective driving)
4. Allman Brothers Band - "Ramblin' Man" (for Southern driving)
5. Dave Matthews Band - "Stay" (not even my favorite DMB song, but it's great for driving on a beautiful day)

Posted by: Becca at February 7, 2008 10:07 AM

Hmmm....just remembered a couple that almost always get me a ticket...hence why I can't play them in the car anymore -

Battle Flag - Lo Fidelity Allstars
Firestarter - the Prodigy

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at February 7, 2008 10:18 AM

Becca - much love for Toad the Wet Sprocket.

If you're talking Dave Matthews Band, I'd vote for Ants Marching or Proudest Monkey. Or really anything before the albumn "Everyday" - which, in my opinion, is when DMB started to suck ass. Oh, actually, any song except for Satellite, which I hate more than almost any other song ever recorded, because my roommate freshman year of college played it on repeat for literally hours on end. GAH!

Posted by: tt_marie at February 7, 2008 10:27 AM

Wanted Dead or Alive -- Bon Jovi
I Can't Drive 55 -- Sammy Hagar
Here I Go Again -- Whitesnake
Turn the Page -- Bob Seger
Danger Zone -- Kenny Loggins (actually, the whole Top Gun soundtrack is kinda fun on a long trip)

Posted by: appwitch at February 7, 2008 10:36 AM

Fuck Fuck Fuck.
I shouldn't have looked at other lists.
A lot of my favourites have been mentioned.
And with dozens of mp3 cds for my car, it's hard to pick. But here are some others that haven't been mentioned:

1. Enter the Sandman - Metallica (Cliche? I don't care)
2.Birdhouse in your soul - They might be Giants (Good God I love this)
3 Inside & Out - Feist (one of the best covers ever.)
4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John (This is my sister's & I car song. Even though we hate each other, we still sing this together.)
5. Hot Diggity Dog Ziggity Boom - Perry Como (Listen to it and you'll understand;))
6. The 200 year old Alcoholic - Makem & Clancy (Brings back some good kiddie memories & great for picking you up.)

- Honourable mentions to anything by Queen; Basement Jaxx; Prodigy and The Beautiful People- Marilyn Manson.
There are just to many.

Posted by: CarpeJugulum at February 7, 2008 10:40 AM

Oh my God, Lola. I didn't think anyone knew of the existence of the Black Mages! Nobuo Uematsu is my music God!!!! I really dig "Advent: One-Winged Angel", it is one of the many video game related songs I could listen to for hours.

Posted by: ScarletKnight at February 7, 2008 10:42 AM

Damn, this is addictive:

"Battleship Chains," Georgia Satellites

"Gotta Know the Rules," Social Distortion

"Catch Your Train," Scorpions

"Train Kept a-Rollin'," Aerosmith (live)

"Scentless Apprentice," Nirvana (live)

Posted by: bucdaddy at February 7, 2008 11:04 AM

Nice to see the Talking Heads in there. Their music just exudes energy with out getting stupid. "Life During Wartime", "Burning Down the House", "Take me to the River", "Love for Sale"...too many to list.

A couple of others for my list...

"Stay the Night" Chicago
"Running Down a Dream" Tom Petty

Posted by: Bubs at February 7, 2008 11:31 AM

Great topic.

1. Bad Reputation - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
2. We're a Happy Family - Ramones
3. Honey Bucket - Melvins
4. Downpayment Blues - AC/DC
5. Tyler - Toadies

Posted by: Mattfactor at February 7, 2008 12:14 PM

I hate to post again, but I just can't let myself go about the rest of my day without mentioning "I Thank You" by ZZ Top. Gets me goin' every time.

Posted by: Mattfactor at February 7, 2008 12:19 PM

Nipsy - I don't know why, but it's bloody nice when someone acknowledges one's post, especially when that someone has such excellent taste in music.

Posted by: vab at February 7, 2008 12:36 PM

Don't Stop Believing is a given, so I'm not including it in my five.

"Sugar Magnolia" Grateful Dead. This is best heard on the first nice day of spring when you can have the windows down.

"Fuck Her Gently" Tenacious D. It reminds me of taking road trips with friends because we always play it.

"Juicy" Notorious B.I.G. I just love it.

"Kid A" Radiohead. A good driving at night song.

"Since U Been Gone" Kelly Clarkson. Does anybody not secretly love belting this one out in the car?

Posted by: onehotmess at February 7, 2008 12:36 PM

All the songs I missed are making me sad. My God, do I EVAR need to drop by Amoeba Records.

Posted by: that bees chick at February 7, 2008 1:20 PM

I don't do roadtrips at all, but I'll try to come up with an imaginary roadtrip soundtrack, if you will. Can't believe no one admitted mentioned Poison! Come on, "Nothin' But a Good Time" or "Unskinny Bop"...

I'd also include "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse, "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats and, I don't know, maybe five songs turned into one by the Ramones.

Posted by: gargumma at February 7, 2008 1:24 PM

My 5:
1. Mekong - The Refreshments
2. Steven's Last Night - Ben Folds Five
3. Take The Money and Run - Steve Miller Band
4. Gravel - Ani Difranco
5. Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin

Bonus: Father and Son - Cat Stevens

Posted by: Captain Steve at February 7, 2008 1:45 PM

Everlong - best Foo ever

Say You'll Be There - Spice Girls.

Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler

Basket Case - Greenday

Home For A Rest - Spirit of the West

I'm going on a road trip this summer and I'm putting all your suggestions on our song list. You people are awesome.

Posted by: Lauren at February 7, 2008 1:52 PM

Dear Prudence - The Beatles
Sons and Daughters - The Decemberists
Rebellion (Lies)- The Arcade Fire
Bat Out Of Hell - Meat Loaf
And If Venice is Sinking - Spirit of the West

Posted by: Sally at February 7, 2008 1:56 PM

I always get to the good ones late. This is gonna be hard though, only 5, I need at least 10 dammit!
1. B.O.B -Outkast. I dare you not to car dance!
2. Paul Revere -Beastie Boys. "Just me and my horsy and a quart of beer"
3. Barracuda -Heart. That opening guitar riff...
4. Spicy MgHaggis Jig -Dropkick Murphys. I have way too much fun yelling this at the top of my lungs.
5. Radar Love -Golden Earring. Perfect for defying all speed laws.

Posted by: starkravingsane at February 7, 2008 2:37 PM

I'm sure some of these are repeats, but I still have to add mine--

1. Proud Mary: Creedance Clearwater Revival- it just feels like a windows down kind of song.

2. Killer Queen: Queen- "to avoid complications, she never kept the same address," makes driving long distances feel right.

3. Domino: Van Morrison- to keep the happy going in traffic.

4. Only: Nine Inch Nails- for when there is no happy to be had in traffic.

5. Get Low: Crooklyn Clan- how can you hear that and NOT want to dance at the wheel?

Posted by: artificialsweet at February 7, 2008 3:13 PM

1. Master of Puppets - Metallica.
DUN.

DUN DUN DUN!

Yeah, um, I rock the fuck out.

2. California Uber Alles - Dead Kennedys.

I've pretty much become the most self-hating Californian in the state, at this point in my life, so this song is very good for me. And driving, yes.

3. Afro Puffs - The Lady of Rage.
'So uh, lemme loosen up my bra strap. And uh, lemme boost ya wit my raw raps.' Can you not find the humor in some pasty goth chick bumping this song up and down the street? I mean, the beat alone is the definition of 'bumpin.'

4. Knights of Cydonia - Muse.
It's like Queen and "Barracuda" had a lovechild and this is what came to be.

5. Judgment Day - Method Man
Again, possibly the definition of 'bumpin.' Method Man rapping about the apocalypse (2012, baby!) and the fact that he's a bad motherfucker with countless bitches. Yes. I love this song.

Posted by: redrighthand at February 7, 2008 3:17 PM

Jerce: You're right, not including La Grange? We should all be flogged.
I also need to throw in:
Cocaine -Eric Clapton
Slow Ride -Foghat
Highway Star -Deep Purple

Now I feel the sudden need to watch Dazed and Confused!

Posted by: starkravingsane at February 7, 2008 3:19 PM

Thanks for the shoutout, tt_marie. Toad the Wet Sprocket's greatest hits CD is an all-around excellent driving album. Love your "Head Over Heels" suggestion, too--I adore that song, thanks (mostly) to Donnie Darko. As for DMB, I'm a diehard fan--can't help myself--so I can find something redeeming in any/all of their albums. Including "Everyday," because "So Right" is another great driving song.

Starkravingsane, great call w/ B.O.B. I see your dare re: car dancing and triple dog dare you not to drive faster, too! That song is dangerous on an open interstate--I'm speeding before the rapping even starts.

Posted by: Becca at February 7, 2008 3:24 PM

This could probably just as easily pass as a favorite song list. Very hard, if not impossible to stop at 5, but if I must.

1) Radar Love - Golden Earing
2) Hero or Best of Me - Foo Fighters
3) Possum Kingdom - Toadies
4) Creep - Radiohead (trust me, turn it up LOUD)

For fun and nostalgia I would say
5) Sweater Song - Weezer (my buds drank to this song in a dive bar over and over until the bartender pulled the plug on the jukebox)

for pure fun and sing-a-long-ability
5) Little Black Backpack - i forget who does it, but it is fun to sing along to.

for old times sake, and a bit of melancholy
5) Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin

You Oughta Know how hard it is, going The Distance, to make a song list that takes Life On The Highway.

See that, I slipped 3 more in there. I am soooo clever.

Posted by: Jaxx at February 7, 2008 4:27 PM

1. The Wallflowers- One Headlight
2. Nirvana- Lithium
3. Rilo Kiley- Breakin' Up
4. Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody... come on
5. Muse- Time Is Running Out

Posted by: chloe at February 7, 2008 5:33 PM

Becca: Seriously, triple dog dare?! Just to attempt that would undoubtedly send me into cardiac arrest! The sheer physical and mental restraint necessary sending me into uncontrollable seizures. You're trying to kill me aren't you...

I don't understand how anyone could leave "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers out.

1. "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers Band
2. "La Grange" by ZZ Top
3. "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC
4. "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits
5. "Take it Easy" by The Eagles

Oh Yeah!!!

Posted by: Mehdi Sheikh at February 7, 2008 7:13 PM

A day late and a dolla short, as always...
And, no Motley Crue?? Really? REALLY?

1. "Live Wire" the Crue
I got my last speeding ticket because of this song

2. "Reptilia" the Strokes

3. "Wheelz of Steel" Oukast
One of the fattest beats ever

4. "One Big Holiday" My Morning Jacket
"Was it that man from California...saying all is gone be green??"

5. "The Rain Song" Led Zeppelin
A few years back some friends and I did a whirlwird trip through the Southwest..we were listing to "Houses of the Holy" whilst driving through the Navajo Nation during a thunderstorm. There was NO ONE around: no cars, no cows, no cell phone reception, no houses, no nothing, just flat road and sand and clouds. It was the most "middle of nowhere" I have ever been in my life. When this song came on, the Three Mesas that the Hopi Nation lives upon all of a sudden appeared on the horizon. I will never forget seeing these huge black rocks jutting out of the desert sands with those towering thunderclouds all around. It was absolutely stunning.

Whole Lotta Love...Zeppelin
Bullet From A Gun...Depeche Mode
Ramblin' Man...Allman Bros.
Let There Be Rock...AC/DC
The Cradle Will Rock...Van Halen

Late to the party and I don't have time to read the 225 previous posts so I'll suggest "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" by George Thorogood. I've nearly stomped through my floorboards to that joint.

Sociopathic Cabbage: Kudos on the Dropkick Murphys. Awesome band.

My five:
Love Rears Its Ugly Head - Living Colour (I'm in a black tuxedo with my collar full of staAAAA-haaarch!)
Firestarter - The Prodigy
FIGJAM - ButterFingers. Aussie hip-hop that's actually listenable.
Trip Like I Do - The Crystal Method
Welcome To The Jungle - Guns n' (Fuckin') Roses

Jesus... there are SO many more...
