I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus
An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles
While I am certainly a fan of the Christmas season (anything that consistently brings Jack Nicholson to the big screen is OK with me), there is nothing I loathe more than Christmas music. I’m sorry, but Bing White or Elmo and Patsy, novelty or classic, it’s all the same simplistic crap to me. I find it obnoxious as hell that even legitimate artists can throw a half-assed song together, insert a few Christmas-themed lyrics, and sell a half-a-million records. That two of the most famous Christmas songs ever were performed by chipmunks and the Singing Dogs says about all one needs to know about the seasonal music piped into every goddamn department store in America. If I had my druthers, those reindeer would’ve taken out a lot more than Grandma; they’d have mauled every artists who sought to exploit the season with appalling Christmas albums — ain’t nothing that would bring me more Christmas joy than hoof prints on Clay Aiken’s forehead.
But, I understand that, for whatever reason, some people actually do like Christmas music. So, in today’s comment diversion, share with us both your favorite and your least favorite Christmas tunes and then, because the holiday is only six days away, do tell us the one DVD you’re hoping to find in your Christmas stocking this year. And if you don’t celebrate the holiday, feel free to pretend or mock us for our traditions.
And thanks again to Julia for the diversion suggestion.
Favorite: “Jingle Bell Rock,” Hall & Oates (just for the priceless video).
Least Favorite: “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” Elmo and Patsy.

I'm in a Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus, so not only do I hear these songs from August to Christmas, I actually have to sing them, too, and boy, did we add some stinkers to our material this year. Least favorite:"I Want a Hippopotomas for Christmas." Words cannot express how much I loathe and despise this song. I hope you never get to hear it! Favorite: Tie between Crosby's "White Christmas" and Cole's "The Christmas Song." Yeah, I'm sentimental, too. Funny, our chorus doesn't sing these two songs, so maybe I don't get burned out on them like I do others.
DVD: "Waitress"

oh, sorry, thought it was our favorite Christmas movie, that would be Die Hard for me.

I work at a certain store. Let's just say that it's neither a barn, nor does it sell pottery, despite what the name might lead one to believe, and leave it at that. We have a corporate sponsored soundtrack which plays nonstop in our stores. Mostly, it's just generic and irritating, like a few songs from Phil Spectre's christmas album, Feliz Navidad, that Leon Redbone Hawaiian Christmas song or whatever, but the one to grind my gears is a little number by the name of Suzy Snowflake.
For those of you fortunate enough to have never heard it, it's a song from the perspective of a snowflake, and it's about just as stupid as that sounds. It's super cutesy, and even has what sounds like a first, perhaps third-grade class singing along in parts. If I work a full nine-hour shift, I probably hear it seven times.
And then people wonder why the suicide rate spikes at Christmas.

Favorite: "Christmas in Hollis" by Run DMC.
Least Favorite: "Santa Baby" sung by anyone other than Eartha Kitt. Thanks, I'm glad you're the flavor of the decade, this month's Maxim cover, and every fourth song on the radio. I don't need you fucking up the holdays for me.

I love me some Christmas music, dag nabbit. BUT, I certainly recognize the dearth of fucking horrible songs out there.
Favorite: "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Treat yourself to the version with the extended intro skit where the two banter. It's awesome and I'm willing to bet it would warm the cockles of the grinchiest heart.
Most Hated: "Christmas Shoes" I have sooooooo much Fuck You saved up for the twisted, jackhole who wrote this song. Every radio station insists on playing the crap out of it too. What is wrong with people?
DVD: I'm hoping for either the complete season set of "Arrested Development" or seasons 1 & 2 of "The Tick". Spoon!
Posted by: Sh*t Sandwich at December 19, 2007 2:46 PM
Favorite: "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues. Fookin' Brilliant. Sad, depressing, hopeful, joyful, and the only Christmas song with the word "Faggot" in it.
Second Favorite: "War is Over" by John Lennon. Again, what christmas should be about, without all that Religion or Jesus or Present crap. Simple peace. And Yoko.
Least Favorite: Just about every other one

Yo rlr260!
I used to be in a Barbershop chorus, and I must say that most (if not all) of our Christmas arrangements were absolutely horrible. "Jingle Bell Rock" in particular--it had an extended intro composed entirely of "Ka-jinga"s. I tried oh so hard to sing it while looking happy and festive while I was secretly dying inside.
Also, I have to give it up the 80's-tastic "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band-Aid.

Favorite: Tied between Carol of the Bells and Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.
Least Favorite: I've always hated Barbara Streisand's version of Jingle Bells (Ji ji ji ji ji Jingle Bells! Ji ji ji ji ji ji Jangle Bells! Kill me).
I must say though, this past weekend at me and my 2 girlfriends' 3rd annual Christmas drunk-over, we had the Philly Christmas radio station on when suddenly the cheesiest most evil song I've ever heard started playing entitled "Mary Did You Know?" It was so bad I wanted to set myself on fire.
Sample lyrics:
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great--I--- AM---.

LEAST: I have no idea what it's called (I leave the room/store when I hear it - seriously), but it's a Britney Spears song. It makes me fucking sick to my stomach. I was actually at Barnes & Noble last night and about twenty seconds into it I had to go outside and smoke until I was certain it was over and done with.
DVD: "Strangers with Candy" Season II (sweet Moses, the movie sucked arse), or "It's Always Sunny in Philly". Either or.
God, I hate that friggin' Britney Spears song...

Favorite: "Puer Natus in Bethlehem" (a Child is Born in Bethlehem) by the 17th century German composer Michael Praetorius (sorry to go all pretentious snob on you guys, but it's a really lovely piece, not much longer than your average Christmas carol and, well, I like it better than most carols), preferably performed by Paul McCreesh and the Gabrielli Consort.
Least Favorite: "SImply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney. You were a Beatle, Paul; have some frakking dignity, for Pete's sake!
DVD: I'd have to say "Battlestar Galactica: Razor."
Posted by: Armando at December 19, 2007 3:11 PM

Least Favorite: RIP, Dan Folgelberg, but "Same Old Lang Syne" is the most god awful depressing song in the world and I can't believe the hell gets played out of it at this time of year. It's not a Christmas song!
DVD: Shakes the Clown and Season 9 of South Park (I don't think Santa will be getting me seasons 9 AND 10, but I'm hoping for 9)

Least Favorite: Not a fan of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. Also, as much as I love me some Ella Fitzgerald her Frosty version sung in a child-like voice I hate.
I think I only asked for one DVD this year: The Family Stone (if I had a Pajiba card, I suspect this would probably get it taken away...)

It's hard for me to pick just one for each. I either love them or hate them.
Most favorite: Snow Miser from The Year Without a Santa Claus (friends love my interpretive dance to that song) and The Holly and the Ivy.
Least Favorite: Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer and Porky Pig's Blue Christmas AND that Dave Matthews Band's song- whatever it is about Jesus being a baby and shit and they sing LOVE LOVE at the end of it.

Favorite: "I heard the bells on Christmas Day" by Henry Longfellow. Written either during or right after WWII. It gets me choked up everytime.
Least Favorite: "Wonderful Christmas time" by Wings. For one of the greatest songwriters in the world and for having such fertile songwriting material as christmas time. Paul McCartney writes one shitty repetitive christmas song... then again maybe it was Linda.

I used to work in corporate music retail. I loathe all holiday music, even the stuff that isn't really bad. I have a box of Christmas CDs and I keep thinking I should make a disk of all the songs that I used to like before working 8 holiday seasons, but I just can't do it.
But I do end up watching A Charlie Brown Christmas every year. Usually alone and secretly. Part of its appeal is the Vince Guaraldi, I have to admit.

Favorite: Choral of the Bells as done by actual bells or the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Also, the entire Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. I love Schroeder's piano playing.
Loathed: Many years of retail hell have afforded me with two songs. The first is a song called "Snow", with lyrics like "I want to wash my face, my hands, my hair with snow", over and over and over again. The second is Elvis' "Blue Christmas". It makes me want to scream until I pass out from a sheer lack of oxygen.
DVD: Me would likey the Alias box set that I asked for last year and still do not have. The Simpsons Movie is an acceptable substitute.

Favorite Song: "Christmaas is All Around" by Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) in Love Actually. And of course the version of "All I want for Christmas Is You" by the little girl at the end. I could listen to either of them over and over through the season without getting annoyed.
Least Favorite: Anything by Manheim? Steamroller. I have never seen the band but I know they all rock the mullet and have waxed chests. not very Christmas-y, more VH1 where are they now-y
Movie: Waitress or Stardust. But only one has Mr. Fillion in it so yeah, Waitress.

BWeaves, you should hint to your mother-in-law that she can get The Wrong Trousers on the DVD titled "Wallace and Gromit in Three Amazing Adventures." It includes The Wrong Trousers, A Grand Day Out, and A Close Shave. And yes, I own it. Greatest birthday gift ever!

Best: River by Sarah Mclachlan(Her X-Mas album is the only one a Jew like me would listen to.
Worst: Pretty much everything else not sung by Sarah Mclachlan. Though Jingle Bells by Babs could equate to a Yuletide migrane.
Hoping: Damn, I got everything for Hanukkah! Which, considering I got not only My So-Called Life and Waitress(with 10 pie recipes!) but I got the Almodovar box set. I would like to get Ratatouille though, and possibly the Six Feet Under box set?

I abhor Christmas music, and I don't think it's only because I'm a jew. Nevertheless...

Usually I like Christmas music in season. But this year, my normally music-free office has been playing Christmas CDs non stop since the week before Thanksgiving. Even worse, when people are too lazy to change the CD out (we seem to have at least 30 of them) they just keep hitting "Play" so the same damn treacly crap replays over and over again. It's a festive version of hell for me. Luckily only 2 more days until Christmas shutdown to make the pain go away for another 11 months.
Favorite: Christmas Eve in Sarajevo - Transiberian Orchestra. I've always dug the Carol of the Bells and this version is pretty kick ass in an 80's power-rock kind of way. Cheesy but fun to crank up.
Least: The 12 Days of Christmas. I never liked this never ending litany of bird related gifts, but after being forced to indure it in various incarnations over the last month I flat out despise it. Bob Rivers and The McKenzie Brothers versions are exempted.
DVD: 5 disc Blade Runner with the briefcase and various knick-knacks.

Armando I HATE that song, and had completely forgotten it existed. I have only had to hear it a couple times in my life, but that was a couple times too many. Now I have that F*CKING song stuck in my head, darn you! And now I have the added knowledge that it is a Paul McCartney song. He really should have more self-respect than that.

Kevin Longrie - you're probably thinking of "Christmas Time Is Here," from A Charlie Brown Christmas - which is my favorite Christmas song.

Favorite Song: "Christmaas is All Around" by Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) in Love Actually.
I was just thinking the same thing.
So cheesy, in an awesome "how much do I love Mr. Nighy" kinda way.
Also The Christmas Song/Nat King Cole
Hate the Little Drummer Boy.
Our DVDs under the tree: Superbad, Bender's Big Score and Order of the Phoenix (what can I say, I've got to see the extra shit)

X-Mas songs that make me smile: Barbra's "Jingle Bells" because it's insane, and Elvis's "Here Comes Santa Claus" because he sounds like a parody of himself while singing it.
I LOATHE that "Baby, It's Cold Outside Song" for the same reason Baba mentioned. Maybe it was coy and flirty decades ago but now it's just creepy and stalker-ish. The version sung by Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson in particular makes me want to take my own life.
And Melody, I used to work retail too and had forgotten about that damned stupid "Snow" song until now. Man, that is godawful.

How could I forget the Christmas Shoes???
Nevermind the Donkey song, Christmas Shoes is total garbage.
And did ya see the god foresaken made-for-TV movie based on the song? You think they could have picked a pair shoes that didn't look like some five year old got a hold of a glue gun.

I LOVE the Muppets Christmas with John Denver and I also love Mele Kalikimaka ia Kakou because Christmas in Hawaii rocks--really, any day spent in Hawaii rocks.
I pretty much hate all other Christmas songs.
If somone is giving away dvds I would like the Simpsons Movie.

the worst: i must agree with the previous dominic the donkey votes (the "hee huh hee huh hee huh" drives me NUTS!)
all i want for christmas: freaks and geeks (i should have had this yrs ago...) and the wire season IV

I for one love Christmas music. I'm from Trinidad where our Christmas music is parang - a mix of calypso and south american style music. My favorite is a song called Soca Santa and a remake of O Come All Ye Faithful by the Mighty Baron.
In terms of non-parang, I love love the version of White Christmas by the Drifters, and Mariah Carey's All I want for Christmas is You.
Least favorite --- all remakes by Faith Hill, Jessica Simpson, and Gloria Estefan. These ladies just do not have the soul or power or joy to pull off half the tunes they are singing.
Posted by: Michelle at December 19, 2007 4:42 PM
Love: "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole. When my dad plays this, I know it's Christmas.
also: "The Carol of the Bells" My friends and I used to perform this every year at family gatherings. At first it was torture, now it's tradition.
Loathe: "White Christmas" I grew up in LA... White Christmases don't exist here.
DVD: Ditto on "PofC: At World's End". That was a fucking FUN movie.

Favorite: My favorite has always been "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses, but I just discovered that I have the full "Chistmas is All Around" by Billy Mack on my iPod. It's been the theme music to my life as I listen to it every day when I walk home from work. It's really hard to be stressed out as Bill Nighy sings "you gave your presents to me/and I gave mine to you/I need Santa beside me/in everything/I do"
Least favorite: "The Christmas Shoes" I would rather kill myself than listen to that song.
DVD: 30 Rock
Posted by: stephie at December 19, 2007 4:44 PM
Modern Favourite: Rockin' Robin, The Jackson 5
Traditional favourite: Good King Wenceslas
Worst: TOO MANY to list, oh my god, aargh. Any of the shit piped out from "The Best Christmas Ever...EVER" or some other generic mix-CD. I think the song that most wants me to hurt people, and which makes me leave whatever store I'm in, is Wizzard's "I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday". Holy hell, just hearing the bells at the beginning of the song has me going purple.
I am one of those unfortunate people working in a department store in the run-up to Christmas, albeit in Paris. Joy of joys, the French don't do hideous seasonal music and my ears have thankfully not been assaulted like they were in the UK, where I used to live. It's not fun, people, not even ironic fun, to have 'Last Christmas' on repeat.
DVD: I've dropped hints for the Arrested Development boxset... here's hoping!

DVD: Superbad

i hate the "shoe song". i don't know what the official title is, but the man singing it sounds constipated. it grates on my nerves. "i wanna buy these shoes, for my momma please." UGH! just give that kid some money and shut the hell up. we don't need to hear you blather on about it.
my favorite is judy garland's "have yourself a merry little christmas".

Favorite - Carol of the Bells, by Dana Carvey on SNL - Leave me alone, I'm doing fine, just go away... perfect dysfuntional song and I wish I could really order the spoof album from that skit.
This is tied with the John Waters Christmas Album for tops space.
Least fave - Santa Baby - from the awful, teeth gritting Victorias Secret commercial "sung" by Heidi Klum
DVD I want - The office. Any or all seasons. I am woefully behind.

BTW, for everyone that hates Christmas music, check out "December is for Cynics" by The Matches. It's a nice humbug filled rock track.
Posted by: Rob at December 19, 2007 5:21 PM
I admit it, I'm a sucker for Xmas music. I know the words to everything, even the sucky songs(years of being in choir) and sing at the top of my lungs (and probably would annoy most of you).
Favorite: I LOVE LOVE "O Come All Ye Faithful", especially in Latin (Adestes Fidelis). There's a version with Luciano Pavarotti and Vanessa Williams that was on SNL years ago which I saw recently. And damn, I love that "Sleigh Ride" song (it does have words, heheh).
Least Favorite: I love me some Paul, but that Wings song is awful. Makes me want to stick a pencil in my eye.
DVD I want: Definitely Hairspray, which I'm definitely going to watch because I bought it for my daughter.
Posted by: Patti at December 19, 2007 5:23 PM
You people disgust me. Everyone keeps posting how terrible the "Christmas Shoes" song is, and how horrible it is for a little kid to want to get his mother, who's dying of cancer, a small gift, but he doesn't have any money.
Last year, my grandmother passed away. And every time I hear that song, I think about how brave she was, and what a fight she put up. It was terrible watching her suffer, alone in that hospital bed, delirious, forgetting the names of her children and grandchildren. She was murdered by a small child with a pair of shoes.
I'll get you, you little bastard. Vengeance will be mine.

Least Favorite: "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" - My last name is Chesnut (no 't' in the middle) so I get this sung to me constantly throughout the year, and especially during December. Mel Torme should pay.

favorite: "Mary's Song (Breath of Heaven)" - Amy Grant.
Nothing I've ever heard has been able to humanize Mary and the first Christmas like this song. Amy's voice embodies the emotion of the lyrics perfectly.
least favorite: "Santa Baby"
It actually manages to make Christmas slutty.
DVD: every episode of Daria ever.

Favourite: Joy to the World. I love the really optimistic beautiful poetic religious ones and this is the most optimistic beautiful poetic and religious of the bunch.
Least favourite: All I Want For Christmas Is You. All the pop christmas songs are entirely too overplayed and make me feel Grinch-like.
DVD: What's Eating Gilbert Grape or Little Shop of Horrors. If we're talking this year's releases, i'd say some extended cut of Harry Potter 5, or Hairspray.
Posted by: Ling at December 19, 2007 6:08 PM
Favorites: The old, old stuff (Holly and the Ivy, Good Kind Wenceslas, etc.), and the Charlie Brown and Grinch albums. Also, I Heard the Bells.
Least Favorites: That annoying kids' choir rendition of Pachelbel's Canon, Grandma Got Run Over, that shoe song, the dogs barking, etc. All the songs (and there are many) that are either bland/treacly or just plain stupid.
Alabamapink, this is hilarious and perfect: "Christmas Shoes" It's like an aural Thomas Kincaid painting.
And Maria, you beat me to it! Carol of the Bells, by Dana Carvey on SNL - Leave me alone, I'm doing fine, just go away... perfect dysfuntional song and I wish I could really order the spoof album from that skit. Yes!

Actually 'Santa Clause is Coming to Town' is what brought me and my BF together, so I can't really knock it. Since I loath all Christmas music, I guess that qualifies it as my favorite jingle.

Least Favorite: Must agree with appwitch, that version of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" where people are uncontrollably compelled to say "witty" things after each line (e.g., "like a light bulb")
DVD: The Spartans

Favorite- the entirety of the cd Hipster's Holiday. Awesome awesome awesome. Deck the halls with Boston Charlie...
Least- What Made the Baby Cry. gag. Also, anything you'll hear in the malls at places like the Gap/Macy's/ anywhere I ever worked seasonal fashion retail. I think I actually did commit suicide, but I was so zoned out that I forgot, and I'm haunting you all right now all Sixth Sense style.
But seriously, people- get Hipster's Holiday. The Lena Horne Jingle Bells is like super-spiked apple cider by the fire. Delicious.
DVD- Almost Famous (I own the VHS, but that barely even counts anymore) and Full Metal Alchemist. The world's one and only truth.

Favorite: "Father Christmas" by the Kinks. If you don't know your Kinks, you are a fetus; go download this song.
Least Favorite: There are far too many to choose from. But Gawd I fucking hate that Trans-Siberian Railroad shite. Or maybe it's Mannheim Steamroller. Whichever. They both suck jingle bells.
DVD: For me, Waitress. I'm getting my husband the five-disk super-duper nineteen-versions "Really The Final Final Cut" set of Blade Runner, but really, that one's for me too.

Ugh, late again. I'm going with whole albums, because I'm an album-rock douchebag.
Favorite: Elvis Christmas album -- not just the best Christmas album ever, but a top-100 album ever. But I love the Chris Isaak Christmas album. Even the Jesus-y songs are really good. "He was born of the Virgin Mary . . . It was the last month of the year."
Least Favorite: Amy Mann's "Christmas Carols to Off Yourself By" or whatever it's called. Yeah, Amy, I hate Christmas too. I just don't issue passive-aggressive albums about it.
DVD I hope is in my stocking: "Mrs. socalled Does the Latina Reverse Handshake." I love that show so much I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant.
Posted by: socalledonlycousins at December 19, 2007 7:22 PM
Favorite: It's hard to pick two, but Carol of the Bells and What Child is this (Greensleeves) are probably tied for number one. Christmastime is Here is way up there.
Hate: I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus--especially when it's sang by an adult--then it's super creepy. Not a huge fan of The Little Drummer Boy either. Most people think it's a damn contest to see who can sing it the S.L.O.W.E.S.T.
DVD: Simpson's Movie or Futurama!

Favorite Songs - Baby, It's Cold Outside (James Taylor version) and River (covered by the Indigo Girls)
Least Favorite - The Opera of the Bells (I guess Carol isn't dramatic enough) by Destiny's Child - it is the longest, most painful thing ever - particularly the end where the spend what seems like months imitating bells

I'm so sorry, Tamatha. I really am. I've managed to go this entire Christmas season without hearing this song, somehow, and yet even typing the title makes it get stuck in MY head (it's going through it as I type). I so feel your pain.
It also goes to show how much Paul and John needed each other creatively.

Favourite Christmas Song: "Snoopy's Christmas" by The Royal Guardsmen. It's companion piece, "Snoopy vs the Red Baron", is also quite stirring. Also love "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and the soundtracks from most of the Christmas movies. It's not really the songs themselves that I love, but that they remind me of when I was younger, and Christmas wasn't yet about stressing over lack of money for Christmas gifts. Shopocalypse, indeed.
Least Favourite Christmas Song: 12 Days of Christmas (it. never. ends), anything re-recorded by Christina Aguilera or Jessica Simpson, and a really obnoxious version of Jingle Bells (think ragtime) recorded by some sadist. It's really terrible.
DVD: The latest fantastic ultimate platinum edition of "Blade Runner"

Judy Garland - "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
Andy Williams - "Happy Holidays". They play it on repeat at work, and it makes me want to tackle Christmas shoppers. Worst is that I inevitably find myself singing it at home...
Superbad - I put off buying it myself cause I knew one of my friends or family would if I didn't. I love being cheap :)

"Hate: Effing Same Auld Lang Syne by Dan Folgeberg. I know the guy just died, but that song is beyond stupid."
ME, TOO! I find it completely cringeworthy. Oh, God, I hate that song.
So many Christmas songs I love: for traditional, I'm a huge fan of O Holy Night. "Little Drummer Boy" reminds me of being little - it made me so misty! Love "Peace on Earth" with Bowie and Bing. Cry whenever I hear Stevie Wonder's "Bedtime for Toys." My parents, cruel Catholics that they were, were constantly reminding of us the little children who didn't get any toys (and not because they were Muslim or Jewish, either).
Must admit to loving "All I Want for Christmas" by Mariah, too.
Posted by: Samantha T at December 19, 2007 8:10 PM
Favorite--and, in fact, the ONLY Christmas music I truly love--the soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas, especially the more melancholy tunes. And I LOVE Christmas, I just HATE almost all the music.
Most hated: "Winter Wonderland". There's just something about the insipid, brainless, obviously just stringing together words that rhyme, lyrics that invoke this Pavlovian ragestorm in me. "Gone away is the bluebird/Here to stay is the new bird"? WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH CHRISTMAS?!
Posted by: june at December 19, 2007 8:12 PM
I am pretty sure I'm not fabricating this - I believe the New Yorker had an article about the range of versions of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Anybody remember this?
Posted by: Samantha T at December 19, 2007 8:14 PM
Favorite: For the longest time, my favorite was "What Child Is This?", because of its haunting melody, but now it seems to change every year. At the moment, I love "Veni Veni Emmanuel". The Latin language is so beautiful.
Most Hated: "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth". Not only is the song nonsensical and terribly unnecessary, I was forced to sing this in front of a video camera by my relatives after my two front teeth fell out. It wasn't Christmas.
As for Manheim Steamroller, they are so deeply entrenched in every Christmas memory from my childhood, I have nothing bad to say about them. Cheesy and 80s-tastic though they may be.
DVD: Pirates 3. Mmm, tentacles.

Oh, and DVD: either Bender's Big Score or, if we can count box sets that we have almost no chance of actually receiving, the Super Deluxe Solid Gold Twin Peaks. Or whatever the hell it's called.
p.s. I also don't hate The Pretenders' "2000 Miles". But all the rest of it sucks!
Posted by: june at December 19, 2007 8:16 PM
favorite carol: 'god rest ye merry gentlemen'- barenaked ladies / sarah machlachlan OR 'joy to the world' - sufjan stevens
least favorite: that sappy 'christmas shoes' song. the last thing i want to hear on the holidays is a country jam about shoes from wal-mart. sorry if that makes my heart sound two sizes too small.

I hate this season. That said, Away in a Manger (preferably sung by children, with as little variation as possible, no Houstonesque 'maaa-aaaaaa-AAAAAAA-nnnnggerrrrooooahhhyeahhhh's please) would have to be my favorite. The tune is sad and lovely, though, which is why I like it.
Loathed: All the rest.

Least favorite:The Simpson sisters (effing Jessica and Ashlee) singing "Little Drummer Boy" God, did I want to sever Ashee's vochal chords! "A rum bum bum buuuhhhhmmmmh"
Posted by: erin at December 19, 2007 9:52 PM
"you're a mean one Mr. Grinch" (does that count?)
and I looooooooooooveee "Carol of the Bells" Will listen to it even if Christmas is months away.
As for hate...all the ones that try too hard to be sappy. Like the stupid one about a poor little kid trying to buy his dying mom new shoes with pennies or whatever. Who comes up with that shit?

Favorite Actual Hymn-like Song: O Holy Night by the New Christy Minstrels - the last bit gives me chills. Close second would be their version of Silent Night The arrangements on both songs are some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
Favorite Non-Sectarian-like Song: Walking in the Air from the Cincinnati Pops Christmas album
Most Hated of Any Type: Blue Christmas by Elvis (followed by every other Christmas song by Elvis - four hours stranded in an elevator in Memphis in December will do that to you). Just hearing the first chord makes me lunge for the off switch.
DVD: Robinson Crusoe on Mars - serious, serious case of want there, but $34.95 is making me wait for the Amazon gift card I know I'll get from somebody.

Favorite: Merry Little Christmas-- but the original version, from "Meet Me in St. Louis." The sad one.
Least favorite: The (motherfucking) Christmas Shoes.
DVD: Planet Earth, so that I can watch the "shallow seas" and "jungles" parts over and over and over.

Favorite: seems like I always tear up during "O Holy Night."
Least favorite: "The First Noel" has the stupidest lyrics of any Christmas song, and with the exception of everything Steve Miller ever wrote, perhaps the worst lyrics of ANY song.

Favorite - "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" Judy Garland

Sh*t Sandwich,
For years our chorus sang an arrangement of "Jingle Bells" where for most of the song we sang "jingle, jingle, jingle" ad nauseum. After you sing it long enough, you stop enunciating the "j" sound and it sounds like "chingle." And your mouth and cheeks were sore from grinning like an idiot for the whole song. I was so glad when it passed out of our repertoire.
For the poster from LA who hates "White Cristmas" because it doesn't snow in LA-have you ever heard the verse to it? The singer is in LA and missing snow "...the orange and palm trees sway. There's never been such a day in Beverly Hills, LA."
That "Snow" song is from the movie "White Cristmas." You're right, it's not one of the best selections from the film.

"Christmas." Oops, sorry!

Favourite: Carol of the Bells
Least Favourite: Last Christmas. I think it's by Boyz II Men (or however they spell it). God I hate it, they used to play it all the time when I worked at a bank, "Last Christmas/ I gave you my heart/ but the very next day/ you gave it away." Words cannot describe how much I LOATHE this song.
DVD: My fiance and I have recently become ridiculously obsessed with the Sopranos. I'd like Season Four.

favorite - anything off the Sarah mclachlan album, "Christmas Time is Here", and any version of "river" by joni mitchell.
least - i hate, hate, hate, feliz navidad. any christmas song that tries to be chipper or funny really. I like my holiday season drenched in melancholy and regret, thank you very much.
DVD - Casino royale (i'm a little behind), knocked up, superbad, House Season 3 and Ugly Betty Season 1. Any of those would do.

Favorite:
Trad: Dunno as to how anything not totally snide, snarky, and bitchy could be a favorite, but this does give me some of the few good vibes I ever get from the season - Silent Night, sung by Elizabeth Schwartzkopf, accompanied by just an acoustic guitar. Much as it was done at its premiere. A couple decades ago, my mother would be off at my sister's for Xmas, and since I was usually working, just before or after, if not during, I couldn't go. So I would be working frantically to get stuff made for Xmas (I sew). Pedal to the metal on the sewing machine, literally up to and past midnight on Christmas Eve. WFMT (local classical music station, and a national treasure) used to play this, just at midnight. I would set down the needle (electric or hand), and just for a few minutes at least, enjoy the season.
Non-Trad: Let's hear it for Twisted Sister and Xmas music that rocks!
Hate: all the sappy, novelty versions of everything else. The more sentimental, the more homicidal I get. I would love the opportunity to punch out a stereo system playing that puke 'Drummer Boy'.
DVD: not expecting anything. It's that kind of year.
P.S: This diversion has been rather educational. Had no idea there was Xmas music by other rockers that might not suck donkey dong. Will have to see if the local library has any of it (don't get your hopes up).

1) Favorite: "The Christmas Song"..(you know "chestnuts roasting on an open fire....")-Nat King Cole because my mom used to sing it to me every Christmas Eve when I was little.
2) Least favorite: Tony Bennet doing "My Favorite Things" from the Sound of Music, or "Where is Love?" from Oliver...both of which are on the soundtrack of the store where I work and they drive me nuts! he also sounds drunk in "Where is Love?"
3) Once

Least favorite- The Gift by Aselin Debison. Think along the lines of Christmas Shoes but it's about 'a poor orphan girl named Maria'.

Fave: Fairytale Of New York
BBC's Radio 1 began playing an edited version of this track (basically bleeping out the words 'slut' and 'faggot'), saying that "we are playing an edited version because some members of the audience might find it offensive". A day later, they played it in full with Andy Parfitt, Radio 1 Controller, saying "we know our audiences are smart enough to distinguish between maliciousness and creative freedom". So, nothing to do with all those complaints, then?
Most hated: special venom is reserved for Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime.
In my stocking: Money's my only real present these days (thank heavens); as to what DVDs I'll buy with it, I'll see what's going in the New Year sales.

Least favoourite: a toss-up between Wham's 'Last Cchristmas', and that fucking awful song by Slade. Oh, and I'd throw in Wizzard's 'Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day', too. Awful awful tosh, but it seems every bloody shop and radio station in the UK plays them non-stop this time of year. Bah humbug!

Favorite: So many to choose from! Tops would have to be "Mater Ora Filium" by Caroline Peyton, but I can't not mention "Fairytale of New York," Bill Nighy's song from Love Actually ("...and if you really love Christmas...come on and let it...snow." Snerk!) and my traditional fave, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing."
Least Favorite: Again, so many candidates. This may get me my ass kicked, but I have NEVER liked "Merry Christmas/War is Over." This may have something to do with the fact that I think John Lennon was an overrated, pretentious wanker. Yes, I really did just say that. Dishonorable mention: "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and anything you're likely to hear piped in while Christmas shopping in a mall.
DVD: The new "Jane Eyre," with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. Santa, are you listening?

Favorite: Have Your Self A Merry Little Christmas, Bright Eyes version and All I Want For Christmas Is You, Love Actually Version
Least Favorite: Oh so many to choose from.... I think I'll go with Happy Christmas. It used to by my favorite until my best friend pointed out that you can hear Yoko Ono in the background. And I also hate the David Bowie version of Little Drummer Boy when he says "peace on earth."

I just started reading this today, and it's made my morning...great comments from all you out there who hate holiday music! For those of you, you need to hear an obscene spoof on the Chipmunks song called "Holy Shit, It's Christmas", I've no idea who does it, but it's a riot. I also love the South Park Hannukah song, "Lonely Jew on Christmas".
I love Christmas music, for the most part, so picking favs is difficult. There's an old song by Nat King Cole, about people seeing Jesus as they are...all children see him in their own color...beautiful, and very touching. I don't think I've ever heard it on the radio. It was on an old album my dad played every Christmas.
I hate that damned "shoes" song, mostly because I have to shed a manipulated-out-of-me tear every effing time I hear it. Tragic.
And I don't want DVDs for Christmas...I just want Deadwood back. Sigh.

Favorite: Snoopy's Christmas by The Royal Guardsmen or Christmas at Ground Zero by Weird Al Yankovic.
Least Favorite: I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus or Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer...they are too stupid.
Christmas DVD: The Second Season of Veronica Mars or the third season of The Office
Posted by: Radlum at December 20, 2007 10:22 AM
Kate and Jenny, I don't like Happy Christmas either. It's mostly because of the children singing (creepy) and the horrible, nails-on-a-chalkboard ending: NOWoowwwOOOOWWWWWWowww. Ugh.
Posted by: raspberry beret at December 20, 2007 10:31 AM
Just a note to all the Little Drummer Boy haters out there - I always hated that song too. Cloying, irksome and insidious. And then I heard Lou Rawls sing it. And it was awesome. So good, I bet Lou Rawls could take that Patsy and Elmo abomination and somehow make it cool (except he's dead).

Honourable mention (Lisa you are not alone): Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade, every year as soon as I hear "are you hangin' up the stockings on the wall", I just have to turn it up and sing along
Also ran: Do They Know its Christmas. It's just infectious and I love watching the video for the greatest collection of mullets ever collected together in one place.
Most hated: There's a song called Lonely Pup in a Christmas Shop about a little dog in a pet shop watching all the people pass by and no-one coming in to give him a home. No song should make you want to kill yourself with grief at Christmas and that one does (and yes, I know that is ironic given my "also ran" pick).

This is going to sound so stupid, but this is how my brain works.
I can't stand the song from The Polar Express that Josh Groban sings, that begins with him singing "Chilllllldreeennnnnnn" because it always makes me think of the episode of The Simpsons where the kids' chorus sings, "Children! Children...Future! Future!" Every time I hear the Groban song, I get the Simpsons' song stuck in my head.

Love!!: Mahalia Jackson, Oh Holy Night. Her voice's richness as she sings, "Fall...on your knees...oh, hear the angel voices!" is exquisite.
Also: I like the traditional religious ones, especially ones in minor key with a slightly melancholy touch, sung WELL by GOOD SINGERS. A cappella gets bonus points.
Hate with the fire of a thousand suns: "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" drives me batty...it makes me feel claustrophobic, like I'm stuck inside a musical snow globe.
Also: any/all songs which string together random words about love...snow...
presents...snow...christmas...yeah...happy! with no apparent plot (which is most of them.) I hear you, June: "Gone away is the bluebird/Here to stay is the new bird" makes zero sense.

Favorite: "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" what can I say, I really like the tune. When I was little, I really liked "We Three Kings of Orient Are," minor key and whatnot, but "Orient" doesn't fly as well with me now. Oh man, my sister and I had this book that played all the classic Christmas songs (not the commercial variety, mind you, but the more traditional ones), and while sitting in bed, we would sing every blasted song in that book every single night during the month of December. My poor mother.
Sorry for the tangential trip down memory lane. That book had, until now, slipped out of my Christmas memory bank...
Least Favorite: "Santa Baby," by anyone. Makes me want to shove candy canes in my ears until they puncture my brain.

For all of you that put "Drummer Boy" as your least favorite, my friends and I play a little game each year to see who can go the longest without hearing the song. As of today, only 1 person is left, and one went out the week after Thanksgiving. I hate that song with the fire of a thousand songs. Mostly because it sucks, but partly 'cause I have yet to win.

I cannot think of anything more annoying

Catherine, we must have been separated at birth. I can only add ABSOLUTELY to your comments.
As for those who hate Santa Baby, I used to agree with you until I participated in a Broadway gypsy Christmas show where a 6'5" 225 lb. hunk of hirsuite muscles sang the song in a beautiful baritone. It was so unbelievably festive because he played it "straight" without affected gestures. After that rollicking rendition, the song moved off my most hated list.
Elton John's Christmas song sounds like he stepped inside something else odiferous and Wham's "Last Christmas" bites. (Notice that I did not say "suck" because sucking is good while biting is not.

Least Favorite: when I was a carhop at Sonic several years ago, they played non-stop family-friendly Christmas music for the entire month of December. There was this one about "I wonder if they know it's Christmas time in Africa" or something along those lines...wtf.

Least favorite: Add me to the list of haters of "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." There was also a CD that they playyed incessantly when I worked at a record store, Twisted Christmas or some other such nonsense. Painful.

I Hate: Anything that tries to make you cry or remind you that poor people suffer on Christmas. I know that, you buggers; you don't have to wail it in my ear every time I walk into a store I'd turn on the radio. Also: what a cheap shot. How 'bout donating to the poor straight-up instead of guilting others into doing it for you? Be a man. Do the right thing.
Worst Offenders: "Do They Know It's Christmas," "Christmas Shoes," "Please, Don't Let Them Hurt the Children," "Same Auld Lang Syne," and, my least favorite: "My Grown-Up Christmas List," by Amy Grant. I loathe her.
My DVD Gift of Choice: "The Office," Season 3.

Just popping in to say that they actually wrote a book called "The Christmas Shoes." I saw it at Goodwill and was half-tempted to buy it just so I could show its awfulness to my friends, but then I decided that it wasn't worth the $2.

Most Favorite: "Carol of the Bells", with or without lyrics.
Least Favorite: Got to agree with the people above me, "Christmas Shoes". It's awful.
Oh, I wish....: 300, I don't have it yet...

OH! I forgot the worst offenders, in my book at least. Any song that has English lyrics and then randomly tosses some stock Latin phrases in the chorus. IE: Gloria, etc... The years of choir made me only like Latin if the whole song is in it.

Best Christmas Song:
Carol of the Meows-like Carol of the Bells only with cats. Think of it as the Meow Mix commercial on crack.
Worst Song: Carol of the Meows.
It all depends on the mood I'm in. Note to Dustin: If you are not a fan of Holiday Sappy Stuff, make a CD with the Carol of the Meows...it will make those who love "White Christmas" go postal.
DVD: Drop Dead Gorgeous and Dr. Who Season 1, 2.

Yeah, yeah, I know, it's a very old thread but I just discovered amazing a capella versions of some Christmas carols--even the dreaded 12 Days of... . Go to youtube and search for "Straight No Chaser" to restore your faith in these tired and much abused songs. Straight No Chaser is a male a capella close harmony group from Indiana U. For an extra kick, view their version of "Stand By Me" recorded in what looks like a Dairy Queen. Felicidades a todos por La Fiesta de los Tres Reyes Magos.

Can't believe I missed this comment diversion! I love Christmas songs an inordinate amount.
Fave: "Merry Christmas Darling," by the Carpenters.
Least fave: Anything by Manheim Steamroller
Movie I want in my stocking: Untitled, the director's cut of Almost Famous. I got it, too, and it's fabulous!
